How I Made A Lit Prom Sign - 384

  • A quick and easy build for my local high school. The cost of renting a lit up prom sign was $900! That's crazy! Instead of renting, I made a set of letters they can keep for less than $200 in material cost (150-ish for melamine and electrical + the lights they bought). I donated my labor cost to help out.
    Each letter is made from 3/4" melamine and lit with a chopped-up string light kit that was provided to me. Each letter plugs into the next one so next year it can be used without the 22. Or a 3 can be made to add to it.

    Nicely done ✅ I actually used to make a lot of these for weddings and events. You can buy white sockets separate and white wiring so it can be flat on back of letters. Only male plug on each letter and use a multiple spaced outlet extension cord allowing spacing and letters rearrange options. Simple black hinged folding open triangle supports in rear folds flat and can stick small black sand bag to weight it. 1/4” x 2” white vinyl trim around glued and screwed on edges (heat gun the curves) gives the letters some visual dimension and makes letters look more substantial. I use dots of blue tape to place bulb locations by eye viewing from far back till spacing looks balanced. I’ve made most of the alphabet and quite a few multiples of certain letters and vowels. A really common one is ALOHA and sub the O with pineapple 🍍 shape or heart ♥️ or Mickey Mouse 🐭 head, etc.

    Great project. the prom committee and high school must be psyched. Spray paint the back small support boxes black and solves your white box problem.

    What a kindness you did for those kids, Jay. And if the boxes really stand out behind the letters, they can get some cheap black fabric and drape it across the backs. No biggie.

  • @xXtheyeti1Xx
    @xXtheyeti1Xx 2 роки тому +2

    They could drape black cloth over the boxes to cover them also

  • @crazyaz9468
    @crazyaz9468 2 роки тому +3

    If I were the school, I'd just use batting to cover the boxes/surround the letters. It would look like clouds and conceal everything. Furthermore, you could splice in Christmas lights and make them light up if they wanted.

    Your efficiency is always encouraging and inspiring. Melamine is a bugger to round-over because of the hard outer laminate and high glue content, right? How tough are those cut edges to spackle/paint? Does cheap drywall mud even stick to the particleboard core of melamine?

    On a side note. It looks like you reduced the height of the "O" and the "2's". Presumably so all the letters are the same height? However, with most fonts the rounded letters and numbers are taller by a certain percentage. Otherwise, they look shorter even though they're not.

    • @JayBates
      @JayBates  2 роки тому +3

      They were all scaled to the same height. The unevenness of the floor and the exact distance from the camera makes it appear uneven.

      @@JayBates Actually Unique Wood Crafting is correct rounded letters are often taller to appear the same height it is an odd perception thing.

      Correct that Unique Wood Crafting is correct. I scaled them though. They are the same height. By default they were not. Per my adjustment they are. 👍🏻

    Jay, you didn't say if those bulbs were incandescent or LED but by the looks of them are incandescent. 25W(?)
    I am not an electrician but by my count there are 85 bulbs total x25W=2125W being pulled off of one circuit. That would really concern me on many levels. I would seek a licensed electrician's advice on how to break that up into multiple circuits and lower amps per circuit.
    Portable breaker box?
    Otherwise nice build. Nice to see people giving back to the community.

    • @doubledarefan

      The 6 should have a way to put the box on the top (sliding dovetails?), so it can be flipped to make a 9. 1 less number to stash in the store room. On further thought, the 6 would also have a panel that can be put in the opening to make it an 8. Or start with the 3, and have 2 panels to make it an 8 or a 9, as well as turn it 180 to get a 6. Kill 4 stones with 1 bird.
