      @@my3sonsnh I agree! He’s 16 now and still gets to see his handiwork when he visits his grandparents house

    Very cool! Reminds me of helping my dad when I was younger. Your son will learn a lot and always remember that. That’s a good dad!

      Rick, thank you! I always loved working with my dad and grandpa when I was a kid (still do) and am hoping that will translate to my son as well. Sometimes I have to make him help, but almost always he is glad I did when it's done. Thanks for your comment!

    That thing is a beast. Looks good. Just worked at the plant that manufactured your CNC machine (Carbide 3D). Theyre really expanding their operation. Must be a good product. The numbers looked really good.

      Thanks Sean! I really like my Shapeoko, I’ve had it since 2016. I did a lot of research and landed on Carbide 3D, good customer service and products. I’m still not super great at cutting metal, I cut wood and composites most of the time.

    Great project video! What are the length measurements for the post and mailbox rest piece? Thank you for sharing!

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  2 роки тому

      Mark, the horizontal mailbox arm/rest piece is 15” on this particular post. The post itself sticks up above the ground about 55”.
      The last couple I’ve made with one 6x6x10 post, that’s enough wood to make the upright and the horizontal piece.
      Hope that helps!

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  2 роки тому

      I should clarify, the “mailbox rest piece” dimensions I gave you are from the face of the post to the end…the whole horizontal piece is actually about 28” long total

    Always a good idea to put some small stones at the base to help with drainage, also use a DPM(Damp proof membrane) around the base of any post when in the ground up to the level of the ground. This will stop the post from rotting over a long period of time.
    Still a nice job looking good.

      Good info Lewis! I will typically bring my concrete above ground level and taper it away from the post if I'm building a deck or something similar. I wanted to keep the concrete below grade here so they could plant flowers and grass up next to the post. The main post is pressure treated, so it should have some moisture resistance as well. A DPM would increase the longevity for sure for anyone looking for extra protection and reassurance. Thanks for the comment and the view Lewis! Have a good day!

    Hey, great work! Can we get in contact about purchasing those raised metal address signs?

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you! I’m probably not the best person to get a metal sign from. I was able to do it, but it was time consuming since I’m used to cutting wood and plastic on my machine. There are many people on ETSY.com that could probably do it much cheaper.

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  2 роки тому

      Tracy, I do not, but if you’d like I can go out and measure what dimensions ours is. It really depends also on which mailbox you buy as well, some are deeper than others.

    Great video! I like doing woodworking projects and feel like mailbox building could be a nice way to earn extra money. The CNC machine numbers really made this special. Any ideas of how I could achieve similar results without spending $3k on a machine?

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  5 років тому

      Mike, when I built our mailbox a few years ago I built it the same way, I just used aluminum numbers from Home Depot and I think it looks really good. I will say I prefer the CNC look over ours, but using the aluminum numbers from the store or online look good as well.

    Why is the notched piece facing the ground? Shouldn’t be ga facing and the other notched arm where the mailbox goes? If not why even notch at all?

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  Рік тому +1

      I think you might be seeing the old notch that was already in that post that I was repurposing. The one I made is facing away from the camera when I set the post down in the hole. The old notch is the one that’s down in the ground.

  • @kapok7228

    Right. It’s easy if you have the skills and equipment.

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  2 роки тому +1

      You really only need the Circular Saw, a chisel, and a speed square. You can get all those at Walmart for less than $50. I was repurposing wood so I used the planer, but if I had just bought a 6x6 from the lumber yard I could have gone without the bigger power equipment.

    • @PottersWork
      @PottersWork  Рік тому

      @@ryanhughes3036, here’s a link to the exact mailbox we used. It’s kind of pricey, but it’s nice and robust to match the 6x6 post.
      www.menards.com/main/hardware/mailboxes-mailbox-posts/architectural-mailboxes-centennial-black-post-mount-mailbox/950020b-10/p-1465526407793-c-1482431821539.htm
      The overhang that the mailbox sits on sticks out 15 inches. The back overhang is 8 inches. The vertical part behind the mailbox is 16 inches tall from the bottom of the mailbox itself. USPS has a diagram on their site that tells you how far above and behind the curb your mailbox needs to be as well. Hope that helps!

      Yes, agreed Mike! We tried to get my respirator on him before hand and his said it was hurting his face. I had that RZ mask on hand so we used it in a pinch as I thought it was better than nothing. It actually sealed up pretty well when he had the strap higher on his head, but as you can see in the video it wouldn't stay up there. Normally I have him wear a 3M mask, I just didn't have any on hand. He now has about 6 different ones he has to wear to school anyways, so we are good to go lol.
