I had this pedal back in the 80's. Turbo was a great DB booster for lead solos. There is an Remote Footswitch input jack to switch between modes, sold separately of coarse! lol
Yeah I forgot about the period the sans amp was employed, I could have sworn it was during the 'In Utero' record, but I stand corrected, I've actually got both of them, I haven't looked at the Earnie Bailey 'Kurt's Equipment' in years, but he has all of that information listed on there and it's quiet fascinating for people into Nirvana / Kurt's rig, those MESA racks he used back them instead of Marshall heads (Kurt hated Marshall because of hair metal bands in the 80's) are crazy rare now and very pricey!
I own a SansAmp Classic reissue myself and it is really fucking badass, though it is pricey as hell. It cost me $299 and by the time tax was calculated, it was $317.
I bought one of these at a yard sale a decade ago for about $5 and loved it immediately. I wasn't expecting much when I picked it up, but I was blown away by how good it sounded. Best $5 I ever spent.
As a John Frusciante fanboy the DS-2 is an essential part of the pedal board. He puts it on mode II with every knob dimed… the sound is immediately recognizable it’s Frusciante in a box
Yes, I’ve heard he dimes the knobs but he may have some sort of tool to compensate for it. When I dime my DS-2 it sounds horrendous. I can get great RHCP sounds without diming anything, however
Everyone is talking about the chugs, but the grind on those power chords is what got me. I love distortion that has that hard edge to it but still sounds thick. MIDS!

Thanks to this video, Ola, I gave the DS-2 a whirl into my FX Loop return… and my goodness! It’s a metal machine! I used to always put it in front of the amp for Frusciante style leads/solos and it’s wild and unruly… so I never considered a metal application for it till now… I kind of like it as a preamp pedal more than I do my REVV G3, and that’s a high bar to clear! Thank you for trying this out!

I would love to see a "Will It Chug?" with the MD-2 Mega Distortion. It is the most confusing pedal I have ever used. I can't figure out what the difference is between the "Dist" and "Gain Boost" knobs, and I feel like there is a really good sound in there somewhere, if I could just figure out how to get it out.

Did it chug? Yes and far sooner than you said. 5 chug points to the Boss Turbo Distortion, -1 for Boss for putting "Turbo" on it, like everyone did on products in the '80s.
I've had one of the back in 1995... lost it around 2003.. don't know how.. then after searching for years I found one for sale in either Stockholm or Malmo Sweden in 2010... love this pedal. Just awesome tones.
Also, the Duncan Powerstage is designed to have distortion pedals go into it directly. Might not sound as good when played directly into the fx return of a 'normal' guitar amp. But these were some very usable sounds for sure

During the Bleach Era and or before it is said somewhere that Kurt used a Randall amp as his go to amp before moving to a Fender Bassman,Vox AC-30 (him and Pat Smear were Beatles fans), and Mesa Boogie / Marshall, It has been said that on mode 1 the DS-2 has simular circuitry as the original MIJ Boss DS-1.

I'm a diehard metal fan, but I've always loved Nirvana and still do. I was 15 when Kurt passed, but I did get to see them twice here in Houston TX. Once in 91 when I was 13, and then in 1993 when I was 15. Anyway, besides the point. Lol. I started playing guitar around the age of 14 and the Boss DS-2 was one of the pedals that I had, along side the Boss DS-1. Both pretty damn decent IMO.
This is quite literally like 1/2 Alice In Chains and 1/2 Death type tone and I love it. This could death sludge so hard. I feel like Eyehategod and Meshuggah could get equal mileage from this pedal
I had a DS-1 I got really cheap and sold it after a week a long time ago haha. Picked up a DS-2 last year for like $40 and it is so good. Right now it's not even on a board anymore, I just keep it on my desk and pray to it.
I once went to a guitar store (I played guitar at that time for maybe 2-3 years, so at that point in time I was *HEAVILY* and I mean *HEAVILY* into Metallica). I wanted to check out an amp that I wanted but they didn't have it. A guy told me though, that they had this Kustom Defender head and cab combo for around the same price. So I tried it. It a single channel head with just volume control so I couldn't crank it and asked for a distortion pedal. The store clerk geve me a ds-2 and holy shit, I was so in love with that pedal. I spent like 2 hrs just playing metallica (badly) through this pedal. Hearing it now, fuck yeah, I still love it. I'd even get it, but I don't own, and I never even have, bought an amp (still to this day lmao) and nowadays just play through plugins. Edit: that was like 8 years ago.

And you can sweep easly through light overdrive to fuzz territory. Sounds amazing in all possible ways

I used to record metal riffs in studio as an engineer combining a DS-2 on turbo mode with a HM-2 for extra balls . IMAGINE THAT

Most Boss distortion pedals sound great into a power amp, it's how people (including Ola) found out the Metal Zone actually sounds decent through it.

Oddly enough, I use this pedal primarily to add body to my clean sound. I always have the distortion knob turned all the way down. It's quite nice.

I had a Boss distortion pedal like that about 30 years ago. We used call it “Crunch” instead of chug.

I once went to a guitar store (I played guitar at that time for maybe 2-3 years, so at that point in time I was *HEAVILY* and I mean *HEAVILY* into Metallica). I wanted to check out an amp that I wanted but they didn't have it. A guy told me though, that they had this Kustom Defender head and cab combo for around the same price. So I tried it. It a single channel head with just volume control so I couldn't crank it and asked for a distortion pedal. The store clerk geve me a ds-2 and holy shit, I was so in love with that pedal. I spent like 2 hrs just playing metallica (badly) through this pedal. Hearing it now, fuck yeah, I still love it. I'd even get it, but I don't own, and I never even have, bought an amp (still to this day lmao) and nowadays just play through plugins.
