‘lacks personality’ is the key word here. White interiors so do. I love painting with dark moody colours. It’s bold and shows you aren’t afraid to express yourself.
Something about a dark interior just seems so mysterious in the most cozy way possible. If someone prefers the light airy vibe, then they may never like it and that's fine. I have an opportunity to go for exactly what I want, and what I want...is black walls. There will be a number of ways in which color will be able to stand out. Artwork etc. Never thought of it on such a deep level, but white walls means basically everything else will be darker.
Gosh it’s so sultry, warm and classically elegant. This is my style to a T and took me forever to figure out what’s it’s called. Can’t wait to decorate my house like this!
In my home, which I bought 95% complete, the contractor used a light "putty" sort of color that no doubt proves unobjectionable to prospective buyers but is intensely uninspiring (can that be a thing?). Your channel has been a huge help in getting it set right. Light and airy is fine for a big, open-plan space like a kitchen/dining room/living room -- mine's getting changed to a slightly warm light grey because the flooring and cabinetry are dark wood. The former dining room will be my office, and dark and moody is the theme there. The walls and built-ins are intended to fade into the background, allowing the things in the room to dominate.
I was toying with a deep rich color for my office and went for it. Had it painted Black Forest Green by BMoore absolutely beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration.
This is exactly what I needed! I do not want light and airy, the sun shines in my windows all afternoon and blinds you. I want to redo my stupid bedroom but can't decide what dark color to use. Edit: I'm going with a deep scarlet. I'm an artist and I can just paint whatever paintings I want to enhance the look, and I won't have to buy new bedding. 🙂
Update: I wish I could post a picture. I went with three deep forest green walls and three black walls (it's the closet side that's why there's extra walls.) I hung a black canopy over my bed and have a plethora of ideas for artwork to make to match. I also painted and stained crates to hang from the wall for extra storage! It's UNREAL!!
Just a warning. In a dark room, windows can become even harder on the eyes, due to the harsh contrast. Plan on softening that with window treatments that filter the sunshine during the day.
I’ve just done large sections of my house in Behr’s Antique Tin and a bathroom in Le Lux. As an accent on my window trim, I used Deco Art’s Splendid Gold, and a coating of Glorious Gold to tone it down a smidge. This is why I know about the windows being high contrast! I have to soften them, myself! Congratulations on achieving your look! 💙😍💙
@@firestick4991 oh I definitely did. Unless I'm working on my artwork I keep the blinds closed and the curtains closed on top of that. They're the nice wooden slat blinds that don't let any light in 🙂
I bought a terracotta leather sofa and it looked just awful in a white room, the color looked murky and dingy. I painted the walls behind it a dark taupe and wow the sofa is the centerpiece and it really pops. What a difference.
I have always loved "masculine" style and the man cave, never been the girls girl. I just painted my den in imports iron ore and I'm loving it. I decided if i hate it at least I have the best damn UA-cam recording room ever! 😂. Colors poo, it's sensual but amazingly calming and relaxing. It's my honeycomb hideout and I'm loving it.
I love this video! It’s hard to find design cues for dark spaces. One thing I would add, is that windows become really hard on the eyes. Plan on softening that effect with window treatments to lessen the contrast.
I would disagree with the idea that the contrast btw the light from the windows and the dark of the wall have to be remediate with windows treatments. As dark color absorbs the light that comes through the windows it actually makes it very pleasant and comfortable to the eyes. Another false idea is that dark color makes the room smaller is exactly the opposite because what I described before. Light color reflects back making our brain truly see where the wall or ceiling or furniture is and its distance. While dark gives so much depth that it makes feel spacious on small room because we can’t notice “the barrier “ of the object.
@thaynavictoriaferr4605 - having done a few rooms in dark colors (Black Sapphire, Le Luxe and Antique Tin), ceilings too, I know it’s hard on the eyes in day time. I found I either have to close the windows completely with dark curtains, or somehow reflect light from the windows to even out the light sources. My windows are not that big, so it’s hard on the eyes, at least in my space. Large windows in a dark colored room is not hard on the eyes. Like in the picture with the large windows on top of the room in this video. 0:48 & 3:55 If it’s not a smaller window, I agree it’s perfectly fine. Otherwise, it feels like a bright flashlight being pointed at your face in the middle of the night. In my bathroom the window is small, it’s painted with Le Luxe, I painted the ceiling, cabinets and door in high gloss, walls in satin. The fixtures are still white, so it’s balanced out. In my bedroom with Black Sapphire, I needed insulation because it’s built in 1944. So, I used the reflective side of insulation panels as art, and framed them out, on the opposing wall from the smaller windows. It’s very comfortable now, even with windows completely open and no covering at all. It’s really cool looking. It still reflects the dark color of the walls and ceiling, but it’s also like adding another window on the opposite wall where there isn’t any light source. However, I do love my dark and delightful rooms! No regrets! Except I wish I did it sooner!
I really love this look. I started with the outside by paining the siding, trim, window frames, garage door, gutter and downspouts Cyberspace by Sherwin Williams. The inside I painted walls (matte) doors and trim(satin) Sea Serpent by Sherwin. I also painted the kitchen cabinets the same color.

I appreciate your well organized, knowledgable anf well spoken advice. This dark and moody style is what I am looking to create with some dark reds and checkerboard added in.
I've been looking for color ideas for my hallway, den, and living room. I knew I didn't want white, beige, dusty rose, or pastels. Then bingo, I stumbled on this look. Some especially good tips on decor too.
I painted my smallish livingroom and diningroom a very dark teal ten years ago and love it. I should probably repaint after a decade, but dark walls wear really well. The white ceiling, however, could use a freshen-up.
I really want to paint my whole living room black.. trim, doors, ceiling but I've been stuck on how to go about it for a week now but i have more of an idea now so thank you thank you THANK YOU for this.
Who made the brown leather couch? Beautiful rooms. Finally someone doing masculine. Never understood why Calvin Klein or someone never did masculine striped or patterned sheets. A few of Lauren’s comforter sets went masculine, but nothing else out there.
I absolutely love tweeds, Paisley, herringbone, equestrian leather details and brass. White, cream or grey candles in sandalwood, bergamot, and musk. I think huge candelabras and chunky cable knit throws are fascinating. I'll stop here, I'm getting far too excited 😂😂

Excellent advice. I’ve watched this twice now, on the cusp taking the plunge to go to the Dark Side… I’m going with F&B x Liberty Chine No.3 OR Studio Green….
I went for a variety in my home after we had a house fire and I got to do everything from scratch. My kitchen and dining room are light and airy, in kinda a French cottage style with lots of copper and lace and the countertops are all Chevron butcher block. My living room is more mid-tones with some sage green, blue , and terracotta with leather and walnut furniture. And I went super dark and moody in my bedroom by painting walls to ceiling in a red clay orange color in ultra matte with Sponge techniques and adding plaster of Paris to the paint to make it feel the the inside of a little animal den. Then all my furniture is Victorian with a super ornate headboard and nightstands I made out of an antique vanity. The rest of the color palette is Muted greens, Yellow, and terracotta. One whole wall is floor to ceiling gallery wall of antique and vintage paintings and wall sculptures with special emphasis on flowers, foxes, and mounted insects that I’ve found dead( don’t worry. They are ethically sourced) My bedspread in green velvet with layers of vintage woven blankets that peak out from underneath in shades of yellow and terracotta. I wish I could add pictures but it’s my dream bedroom and aside from my mattress I thrifted, found, or made everything in it.
"Dark and Moody" So THAT'S what it's called. Wonderful. Ha! I just heard the part of you saying people worry about the room looking too small and this was exactly my issue as well, but I'm going out on a limb here anyway. I love dark and moody, the only "light" areas are mine and my daughter's room. Her's is a moody purple and mine is romantic pink. I'm currently working on renovating my bathroom and I'm doing this look. I'm going for a semi-dark green (I wanted to go even darker but my daughter made a bowel analogy and changed my mind), but I'm going for black and gold, umm...accents? Basically, painting my tub, sink and toilet black, and faucets will be gold. Floors are a black, grey and green marble (contact paper), and ceiling will be dark grey which I'm looking to create a "concrete effect" on. Crossing my fingers. I hope you see the vision as I do. I'll gladly accept any suggestions anyone wants to throw my way. Hopefully, my excitement isn't so obvious. 😂😂
Im painting my living room and ceiling in " Emerald Glade " and i love the colour and effect. I wonder how it compares with Emerald Green or how similar it is..i love the colour Green , its potentially my favourite 😊
That is great advice, thank you. I was thinking about using black in small apartment but I wasn't sure and you confirmed my desire to use it 💕 Of course it's not the only color of choice, I will be using black, grey, and pink for touches
Thank you so much for this video. We are in the final stages of building a semi-custom home and are hoping to create a few moody spaces but it has been hard for me to visualize how to do so exactly so this was extremely helpful!
I have a small home, 567 sq ft, and I'm planning to paint the kitchen and living room (one open space) hunter green. We have a shed roof so the ceiling is slanted, short on the kitchen side and gradually getting higher as you move to the living room, which has french doors going to our porch. I'm torn on whether I should paint the ceiling the same color, white or even just doing a different color to draw the eye up... thoughts?
Sorry for the delay in response! I would go with white as it will help make the ceiling height feel larger at the low end and dramatic at the high end. This size space is also a great space you could consider leaving the walls lighter and using the decor and furniture to create the moody style!
Loved your explanation, I think it helped me decide, I want my studio to be dark and moody, yet I'm not sure if the space is rectangular will make it too dark by having the natural light coming on one of the short sides, but according to the explanation, it should create shadows, I would like your opinion on this is possible 💜
Well it just so happens that I released a video today where I help with things exactly like this! ua-cam.com/video/6nfyAaAVKyI/v-deo.htmlsi=VFy20093_wHxC5Cu
Just want to add that matte paint will look better on really old walls rather than satin finish. satin paint brings out alot of imperfections . Just a career painter pov who lives in a house from 1900 😂
We plan to paint the entire interior and exterior of our house Navy Blue. We have a coastal, nautical interior design monochromatic down the Shore and have a sea-foam green going now that is beautiful however that paint is over 5 years old and time for new paint. Everything will be Navy Blue, Center hall, living room, dining room, kitchen, great room, powder room, staircase, stairwell, upstairs hallway, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, all of the wood work Navy Blue, the ceilings will be White, exterior shake shingles Navy Blue, white shutters, white trim, Red front door, Red garage doors. It is going to take a costly $$$ ton of paint, primer, etc to pull off our Navy Blue monochromatic paint job, y'all wish us luck please! Kevin Sea Girt, New Jersey

I want a dark colour in my bedroom. Either dark blue or dark purple, that's almost black
Thank you very informative and helpful information
Great information, my house is light and airy, until the owners bedroom. Inkwell is the choice of wall color:

Hey great Video! Can you tell me the name of the music in the background? Ty❤
Thanks! So sorry - I can't remember what the title of the song was, I wish I did! (This video was about 1.5 years ago)
@@ChaudryGhafoor No worries! Thank you for the answer❤️
Amazing thank you!!
I would like to see live video more than pictures
This was gothic, I love it 😍
I have a small home, 567 sq ft, and I'm planning to paint the kitchen and living room (one open space) hunter green.

Whether if dark decor works in tropical countries...
Of course.... a sharp contrast from the outside world could make for a very exciting space.

Not a big fan of white rooms. Dark walls are nice to make a statement and to frame furniture. I did my bedroom in Dark Ivy (green).
DOPE!!
Just want to add that matte paint will look better on really old walls rather than satin finish. satin paint brings out alot of imperfections . Just a career painter pov who lives in a house from 1900 😂
Ooph this was great!
We plan to paint the entire interior and exterior of our house Navy Blue.
We have a coastal, nautical interior design monochromatic down the Shore and have a sea-foam green going now that is beautiful however that paint is over 5 years old and time for new paint.
Everything will be Navy Blue, Center hall, living room, dining room, kitchen, great room, powder room, staircase, stairwell, upstairs hallway, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, all of the wood work Navy Blue, the ceilings will be White, exterior shake shingles Navy Blue, white shutters,
white trim, Red front door, Red garage doors.
It is going to take a costly $$$ ton of paint, primer, etc to pull off our Navy Blue monochromatic paint job, y'all wish us luck please!

John Petrucci.... is that you without hair?
I made my new house all dark and moody. I hate white walls.
You look like Rob mcellhenney, or whatever his name is
It also makes it look like vampires live there.
I’m sorry, keep their coffins there.
Ewe no on the light and airy I need color and personality 🤗🤗🤗
