Once Brian Wilson finally admitted that they stole the song, he then had the nerve to get upset that Chuck Berry got angry about it. Even today if you google the situation there's an "Alternative facts" version of the theft that explains that it was tribute to Berry and that they tried to contact him but he was in jail. "But in the beginning you said you didn't steal it and he didn't deserve credit." Which one is it?
Yes, they copied the tune exactly - but made one important change: They also stole the Chuck Berry intro from 'Johnny B Goode' and 'Roll Over Beethoven', and stuck it on to the beginning!
+ Meme Generator False. "Sweet Little Sixteen" sounds very similar to the song "Route 90" composed by Clarence Garlow in 1953. Chuck also copied the riff of "Ain't That Just Like a Woman" by Louis Jordan when he wrote "Johnny B. Goode".
He is referring to the film "Back to the Future" in which Chuck Berry's cousin hears Marty McFly play Johnny B. Goode and tells Chuck Berry, thus causing him to write the song. In other words the song had no first cause. This is a paradox commonly referred to as a causal loop, i.e. Marty McFly performed a song by Chuck Berry, who wrote it because he heard Marty McFly perform it, who performed it because he heard Chuck Berry sing it, etc.
Damn shame Berry didn’t make it to #1 in the ‘50’s. ‘Sweet Little Sixteen’ peaked March 9, 1958 at #2, kept out of the top spot by an instrumental called ‘Tequila’, by the Champs.
I always thought they were very similar when hearing Chuck Berry's song. Especially 00:42 in Chuck Berry's song and 1:05 in the Beach Boy's song. Compare those two parts and it's undeniable.
Fun, Fun, Fun has the same intro as many Chuck's songs as well. In fact the beach boys were kinda like Chuck's stuffs and had done several covers of Chuck's songs. School Days, Rock and Roll Music.
Nothing compared to Jagger getting credit for Bitter Sweet Symphony. As Richard Ashcroft said “it was the best song the Stones had had in 20 years” haha
Sad thing for me is just before Chuck Berry gets to the phrase 'Sweet Little Sixteen', I keep expecting him to say 'Surfin USA' (sort of fits with the lyrical + chord progression as well)...Am a big fan of the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson still denies copying (Murry settled without his knowledge apparently), but the clincher is that they ripped off the intro so blatantly from Berry's Johnny B.Goode. Guess was a common tale back then though, black blues music packaged as white rock'n'roll.
Dean Torrence tells the story on this podcast: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/good-vibrations-episode-12-chuck-berry-tribute-special/id1313106797?i=1000394965077&fbclid=IwAR2TODTu6W3jCkIHgkjoSPxNdS4RxuJcsRNz3sDyeP9A6fR8T2CeoVF639w
If it weren’t for chuck berry, muddy waters, and little Richard, the stones and the Beatles , would not have had a style to imitate and thus become famous. It’s a catch 22
This one was obvious--I could hear the similarities right away. I read that Brian Wilson's father did the right thing and handed over the copyright for "Surfin' USA" to Chuck Berry. So if you ever see the sheet music for Beach Boys' "Surfin' USA," it says by Chuck Berry. And I read that Brian didn't hold a grudge against Berry for that (which I personally don't think he should have)--and I read that Brian even sings some of "Little Sweet Sixteen" (by Chuck Berry) onstage sometimes. Good going, guys--right thing to do! (P.S. I also saw Chuck on The Tonight Show, being interviewed by Johnny Carson. Johnny asked him about others "stealing" his songs. Chuck replied that they were merely "borrowing" from him. Because when musicians get credit for writing their songs, no matter who sings it--they'll get credit. Well, Chuck, as I said, did eventually get credit for "Surfin' USA." John 14 - Behold, I give you a new commandment that you should love one another, as I (Jesus) loved you. For by this shall all men know you are My disciples, because you have love for one another.
Yea but thou shall not steal. The trend for white theft is KNOWING you’re stealing, pretend as if your paying some sort of homage, make your millions and fame and wealth, then later admit you stole after it doesn’t matter. You’ll suffer for the crimes you do…God forgives the sins you commit against him but the ones you do to your fellow humans you better watch out for…
if you look in the rolling stone rock trivia magazine there's a question that says "What Beach Boys song was a re-write of the chuck berry son Sweet Little Sixteen" the answer is Surfin' USA.
David Marks spots Chuck Berry eating in a donut bar and goes in to shake his hand. Chuck completely ignores him, and walks out. Later the Beach Boys credit Chuck on their later issues of this record.
@hughex16 i'm sorry, it would be nice if people stopped crying the race card...Elvis was gorgeous, could sing and dance so sexily nobody did that before, he put a new little touch on rock and roll..i LOVE Chuck Berry, all his songs...but Elvis, man what a beautiful guy who could sing and DANCE so sexily, Chuck was a different thing..And Michael Jackson is called King of POP when there would have been no MJ w-out James Brown, Elvis and all the other dancers and singers MJ loved so much.
@KashiemMartialArtist They stole the harmonies from Sweet Little Sixteen and the music from Brown Eyed Handsome Man, then changed the lyrics and made their biggest commercial hit. Chuck Berry wrote the song. Beach Boys took credit.
Check out Chuck's dancing with his music on some of his songs here...had a similar effect to Elvis on crowds. It's my opinion but he didn't get his due. Perhaps playing the race card these days might be seen as excessive, but landscape was very different then in era of segregation and black entertainers (esp musicians) were discriminated against almost as public policy by local authorities. Aside from that, Elvis' early hits were covers of musicians white folks wouldn't have had access to.
We must admit The Beach Boys were not really big deal compared to Chuck Berry and The Beatles, TBB just a famous answer to Beatles, light years of quality and creativity from the 4 guys of Liverpool

What about trying to put surf lyrics to 'Sweet Little Sixteen's melody? @TubeNumber1USA THANKS YOU SO MUCH! exactly! it is stealing when you switch a few things and re-name the song, with other lyrics! musicians must be given credit for music or lyrics that's all! they were all so talented and great and cute!
@jsrfacts4u its not like they wrote the song in there basement, heared chucks song and innocently enough thought the mix could be great. They didnt even write the lyrics for surfing. They stole the backbone from chiucks song and probably thought it wasnt such a big deal with the racism back then. I love the beach boys but im glad chuck got credit for there song
@Beelzebrad667 It doesn't matter who wrote the song because there were more artist back then using chuck berry's cover. So why the anger should be all on Sufin U.S.A? Well deserved!

Chuck Berry borrowed from Bob Wills also.
