This is LITERALLY the best pick holding video I've come across on UA-cam, most people don't show it from this angle so it's still hard to tell how the pick should be positioned! Thank you, short and sweet but detailed!!
I have such large hands I can't even play a strat. Don't tell me "the proper way" to hold a pick when your hands are so much smaller than mine. Or maybe just say "if you have hands the same exact size as mine this is the proper way to hold a pick." 😂
its about the way u attack the string, if ur arent perpendicular to the strings the pick will rotate based on the angle the strings are pushing the pick in ur hand
Take a knife to your picks if you have smooth picks. Make a “star” pattern of cuts into the surface on both sides and you’re adding grip. Easy technique to help. Or buy picks that have grip surface. I’ve been using the Matt Heafy custom Jazz III picks for about a year and a half and they’re amazing. Dennis Sharp had incredible picks many years ago but I don’t know if they exist anymore, I haven’t seen them in well over a decade where I live. Hold the pick so that you don’t drop it. That’s more important than a “rule” that is just a suggestion. Always remember that while music has many guidelines and many incredible tricks and practices for enhancing technique and efficiency, the ultimate rule is that there are no rules. Play how you feel comfortable. Or struggle through a new way and practice it until you make it work. There is no wrong way, only different ways. All about what works for you and your style and intentions as a player and artist.
This is great for a beginner. I have evolved to hold the pick different ways in order to draw a different tone. The tinny sound is just fine. If that's what you are going for. I wouldn't suggest it for a run or any lagoto or if you are trying to learn songs. But when you decide to create songs. That can be a great thing to know. This includes variations like hybrid picking. If you get far to used to holding it "the correct way" you may struggle finding a comfortable position when you want to experiment a little. It was much easier for older guitarists to marry themselves to the craft. This day and age no one but the laziest have time to learn right. So if you are going for the standard picking and just need help holding one. This is the best advice. Just remember my advice when going outside the box, which is what music is all about. Just don't use this mentality when learning music theory. That's not a debatable or changeable reality. Learn it, though. It will increase your knowledge 10 fold.
I only agree to an extent. I spent so many years playing the first way he showed and it hindered me badly. When I changed it to the proper way he showed, I began achieving everything I had wanted. Two fingers, and the thumb using a medium Fender triangular Dorito pick, like the one Carlos used at Woodstock during " Soul Sacrifice" ! Gives you great control, and has never flown off accidentally into the crowd!🤦
almost correct except that the end point of the pick should be slightly angled horizontally inwards of your thumb, this way you don't miss or skip strings very often.
What about using the wide side, or one of the rounded edges available from that side? In the case of holding the pick to do that, which way should the pointy end be facing, away from your wrist or toward it?

I bought picks with anti slip surface and it helps a lot
I was holding it exactly the same way, just leaving out a smaller portion of the tip of the pick.
What about pick by Pat Metheny,George Benson?)))
Many teachers and videos tell people holding pick like this, but not everyone's index finger looks same, mine is short and not straight, so I tried this way hard but never feel comfortable, I think that's why guitar is really hard for student which right hand and left hand fingers are not like the teacher's, they feel weird and have to use many years figuring best pose for themselves.
and a softer flexing pick too
How do you hit those awesome artificial harmonics now?
Two fingers, and the thumb using a medium Fender triangular Dorito pick, like the one Carlos used at Woodstock during " Soul Sacrifice" !
Gives you great control, and has never flown off accidentally
into the crowd!🤦
almost correct except that the end point of the pick should be slightly angled horizontally inwards of your thumb, this way you don't miss or skip strings very often.
What about using the wide side, or one of the rounded edges available from that side? In the case of holding the pick to do that, which way should the pointy end be facing, away from your wrist or toward it?
Can you do pinch harmonics this way?
Don’t feel forced to listen to this you don’t have to a little thing about being a guitar player is we all do things differently and if it works for you then don’t feel forced to do something someone else’s way. So hold the puck how ever you want to and how ever feels most comfortable and right
The reason techniques are shown is because it works. If you want to get better you have to practice good technique.
Big thing is hold the pick closer to the tip, how you hold it isnt the biggest deal
Thank you
Welcome!
Where did you get that hammerhead pick??? Please share
Sure thing! They are from a little shop on Kauai.
I feel comfortable with the other side, Like the pointy end towards my thumb.
Great video, thanks for the advice 🔥
Thanks!
I finger pick so I don't know why I'm watching this video, but I'm sure it works!
From where to buy plectrum ?
It’s also in line with your palm so you can palm mute 😀
I've been playing for about 20 years now and I just can't seem to get a grip like that , if I do that my hands are so big it's in the way of my pick and my hand starts to play the strumming at a weird angle to I don't know how to get it better
Jve tried so hard over the last few years but I just can't hold a pic or strum can only finger pick going to try again tonight
This was an excellent video ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
The problem is that my hand cramps up really bad when I hold it like this and I’m not tense or anything
Sorry to hear that! What grip do you prefer to use instead?
@@acousticidaho I usually hold the pick with the side of my index finger and my thumb. It is not as compact as what you showed in the video though, as I usually make a big "O" shape with those two fingers. It sucks because I know there is a better way to hold it, but my hand is really big and it just ends up cramping. Hopefully I explained that clearly, thanks for taking the time to read and respond to me btw :)
if i hold tight, i can play or hitting the strings hard. if i hold loose, it falls.
i think practice will make it right, is it?
coz I've been playing with index plus middle finger
Ty
Hold it however feels best, there is no "one way to play" I play the way he says "never play like this" and get amazing even sounds. It's all you
