    A big red-flag is harassing customers/reviewers, I follow a few smaller accounts that review indie makeup on IG & some brands are really nasty (even if the review is mostly positive). It just shows me that they don't value constructive criticism.

    • @AmyLovesMakeup
      @AmyLovesMakeup  4 роки тому +28

      Totally agree! I really love when I see a brand soak up the constructive criticism and use it to make better products.

      Yup! I refuse to give my money to any brand, indie or corporate owned, that "claps back" at customers who may have had a problem with an order or just didnt like the product. Drunk Elephant is a big offender in that department. They tell their customers that they're stupid and dont know how to use the products properly if they dont see any positive results or even if they have an ALLERGIC REACTION!!!! Soooo.....someone is stupid and can't figure out how to put a moisturizer on their face if their body's antibodies react to the product's antigens? OK. Make that make sense.🙄🙄🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣 Never a red cent they will get from me!🤣🤣🤣

    • @SourEggz
      @SourEggz 3 роки тому +9

      It always reminds me of Amy’s Baking Company when companies behave like that. I work in customer service and I get that customers can, at times, be wrong or silly or obnoxious however it isn’t good practise to antagonize or be unhelpful to them. I have, in the past, had the most obnoxious customers who were antagonistic or speculative (for no reason, in many cases, other than to be difficult it seems) to later being some of my best clients. Working with the public is difficult but you are far better to respond rather than react, to see that every opportunity is a good one - even when it comes from a negative place (like a bad review) and know that it isn’t a personal slight against you as a business owner or representative.
      For some reason, there is NO secret made by many makeup influencers or companies that the owners/creators respond very personally when people offer up even the most reasonable concern. It is immediately dismissed or they are explosively rude towards the people. It is almost like their audiences and companies have blurred the line between business and individuals so I think these companies think that it is justifiable to react that way?! It isn’t, by the way, it can sink an entire company. I mean - check me with that Z-Palette fiasco - which could have been avoided by responding professionally and addressing people concerns and criticisms. You know, say something like, “Thank you for your concern. We created this product to meet the needs of some of our customers and is specifically designed to work with our suggested de-potting method. It is a much safer alternative to using other methods, however we understand that this product isn’t for everyone, which is why we provided tutorials on safely depotting eyeshadows on our website. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts with us and we look forward to making products that meet your needs.” ... you know - instead of arguing and “flaming” would-be customers. I probably would have bought that thing at the time because I was hesitant to use my hair straightener. They could have even expanded that product range, like, making a solution to fix eyeshadows when broken, or other products to depot shadows. But, alas, they really messed that up.
      Man, customer service isn’t for everyone - if these people cannot handle dealing with customers they need to hire people who can. People like myself are a rare breed who actually like working in customer service.
      Also, that is considered a red-flag when dealing with fraudulent callers. As legitimate companies record for quality assurance and talking with actual tele-consultants on the phone is often a good experience and they are given deescalation training; - so, if a person on the other line starts getting audibly upset or starts swearing at you - most likely they are a scammer. Point blank.

      Yasss! When the original Feral palette came out it was expensive AF and shipping was ridiculous. I actually commented that on one of their posts. A month or 2 later I saw another post from them again saying they had adjusted their prices and I made my first purchase from them.

    • @amypanddirtytoo1926
      @amypanddirtytoo1926 4 роки тому +13

      They also changed the palette too!! Remember how people weren't happy with the two neutral shades that were almost the same and wished there was a different matte green? So they made it so that those who wanted the green could get it with the green and those that wanted the neutral could get it that way. AND if you got the original palette and wanted the green they would send you a single for FREE!!

    This is so important! I was an affiliate with Kitten Boss Cosmetics. The owner and another affiliate were extremely anti semitic towards me. The public backlash against her made her shut the brand down and then sneakily try to rebrand. Luckily I caught that and now she is no longer in the beauty community. I wish that I would have seen this video back when that happened!

      Kitten Boss used one of my pictures without permission, which isn't a huge deal but it was annoying. • @celestecelestial90
      @celestecelestial90 4 роки тому +5

      Amy Loves Makeup I don’t think it’s controversial, but I feel like you have a fair and balanced approach to your channel. You talk about the good but you also don’t look at everything through a rosey color lens. Most larger influencers just hype everything up or say they are AHBSCESSED with everything and in doing so they lead some people to buy from sketchy brands and companies. I’ve even seen this with smaller influencers. One of them works very closely with Boxycharm and a few days ago he was promoting diarrhea tea on his channel just because Boxycharm has it in their pop up and he got it in PR. Someone in his comments said she was going to buy it but I told her to look it up first because it cause diarrhea for weight loss and it may not be what she wants. People get this false sense of security and think everyone on here is a friend or is honest, but they need to open their eyes, and do their own research before they get sick from a product or waste money. You’re one of the good influencers for sure because you’re honest and truly care about your subscribers.

    The repeated typos from English native speakers, imo at least, show carelessness and sloppiness. And usually that is indicative, in some form or another, of the way they (brands/owners) conduct business.

If you wont even spell check something that is supposed to reflect your business then it shows you just dont care about that business. OR, if it really is just an oversight then to me it shows you arent detail oriented or able to juggle more than one thing at once, not a good thing for a business owner who is going to have my card number and data.

      So many brands let typos slip through the net, even some of the good ones. I treat it like a game of hangman: they get finite number of missteps and then it's game over. It makes sense that a smaller brand might not hire a copy editor, but if spelling and grammar mistakes are rife, it reads as a lack of care and professionalism.

    Also, can’t really trust reviews on their websites.. since they can filter them. Like you said, check out if there’s a hashtag for their name or forums. Or just message people you know who also follow them. I bought $100 worth of liquid lipsticks from a smaller indie brand last year when they were having a “birthday” sale, I even asked other people before I purchased and after.. and no one had issues with their products... so I’m almost wondering if maybe the stuff they sent out in the sale was old or defective? Idk. It was really strange. I’ve swatched their liquid lipsticks with all the other 7 or so brands I have and theirs just cracked and flaked off while the other brands stayed in tact... I never complained to them because they were bogo and I just felt weird messaging a small company to complain. Ya know? They smelled super nice, though lol... like buttered maple syrup... and such unique fun colors too 😓

    I am curious too. There was a brand or 2 that I was unaware of. I think it's also a very good idea to direct message someone you see being duped or taken advantage of. I've had some friends help me out by just giving me good advice or a link or two to read or see to make a better decision. It's like anything you purchase. Reviews are over the place. I also think it's super important to say and show the bad too. I know there is a thin line of legal ramifications if you flat out say "they're shitty" but remember it's your choice& money so we should be informed! I hate to feel stupid so I like to try to read and watch alot. Also be prepared to wait. Have patience. It's often 1 person run businesses so it takes some time to receive your products. My favorite brands: devinah, menagerie, looxi, Copacetic, dandylionsco, & shroud!

    I liked this video a lot! I think I'm a little more indie makeup savvy than I was awhile ago--in large part because of reviews from you and others that love indie makeup!--but some of the things that I thought were red flags about brands when I started looking at indie makeup weren't actually. When you are used to shopping from established brands, you think you should be looking at a polished website, or packaging should look a certain way, or their product photos should look a certain way. But you can have a small brand with what looks like well designed packaging with terrible product inside, or terrible service. And a lot of small creators don't have the money to make a website look a certain way, etc etc, but they have great products and service. Anyway, thank you for the great info!

    i really like this style of content from you. you’re well versed on the subject and i think you provided a lot of insight that isn’t gonna be part of the daily consumers “common sense.” i only have one critique with your decision to allow the brands who’ve wronged you in the past anonymity by leaving out their names in this video. by choosing to protect their feelings instead of their next potential consumer who’s also seen this video, you don’t actually prevent the overlapping population from being victimized. i wish instead, you would’ve had the courage to clarify your specific examples with the specific offending brands. especially the lashes one you spoke about who’s constantly changing its name. that being said, i still think this is original in its guide for aiding consumers to prevent their potential manipulation by the problematic people who will always try to exploit whomever they can especially in highly specialized markets like the level of this indie makeup market to which you’re referring.

      i wanna add since i wrote this comment before the seeing entirety of the video that im glad you were willing to exemplify saucebox and call them out explicitly for the drama with their empty promises (something i was in the dark about until hearing it from you )

      I totally understand where you’re coming from and I’ve answered people who asked about brands in the comments section but I felt like if I listed off brands during the entire video it would turn this more into a drama/exposing indie brands video which is not what I wanted. I want this to be a long term resource for people getting into indie brands to be able to protect themselves.

    Another possible red flag I've seen: if they only advertise their products with the same photo over and over, maybe with a different filter each time. Obviously, not every brand can afford over the top grand photoshoots, but if they can't even take photos of two different looks using a product, it might be because the product is difficult to make appealimg.

    I feel like Blush Tribe left a bad taste in my mouth. I know people said they explained it behind the scenes to creators but... like, you can’t explain to the people who have supported you? In my opinion they weren’t a small indie brand, they were a pretty big one in the indie game & even did collabs etc. so the whole complete rebranding and closing the business just gave me a bad feeling. The PayPal tip is good, but some small businesses may not choose to use PayPal as a payment processor because they charge higher fees than others and you can actually lose sales because not everyone uses PayPal. Better to say that you should never buy a product through a dm or some kind of transfer of money. You should be on a website or a well-known social media site (Facebook does act as a payment processor) and be entering your info on that site. You can always do a chargeback with your bank for non-fraud situations, such as non-reciept of goods or services, missing items, over-charged, etc.

    • @AmyLovesMakeup
      @AmyLovesMakeup  4 роки тому +1

    Careful with Paypal! My underage brother had a really bad situation once. He was playing a computer game, as young teens do these days, but the game was actually charging money without notice via Paypal. My mon was logged into her Paypal and it connected automatically to this game. It was a situation where if you pressed the space bar, they would give you coins to use in the game but there was no "click OK to buy coins for 5$" or something. They just took $5 from you via Paypal with every click of the space bar. My little brother pressed the space bar hundreds of times because it was part of the game. All of a sudden, there was over $5000 missing from my mom's bank account. My parents were in the middle of a divorce at the time and my mom was forced to borrow a lot of money from my dad just to buy groceries. After a month of fighting with Paypal, the money was finally returned. The whole situation caused us extreme stress and my little brother was crying and refused to eat because he felt so guilty even though it wasn't his fault. Paypal didn't end their contract with that game. Just because Paypal provides service to a company, doesn't mean your money is safe. No kid should feel like they robbed their parents of over $5000 by accident.

    • @AmyLovesMakeup
      @AmyLovesMakeup  3 роки тому

      Wow that’s terrible. When I use PayPal it always makes me double verify and it’s all sorts of buttons or make a purchase. Sounds like a really terrible game. Was your mom able to get the money back? ☹️

    Great video! I do think using PayPal is always a good option for consumers - the issue is PayPal charges per transaction (same with other providers like Amex) and their charges can be quite high.
