They are expensive if you get one fully trained. I owner-trained, so outside of gear and training tools, he's just about the cost of a pet. It's a great option if the cost is too high but you have the time and energy to train. I know the time and energy can be just as much of a setback, though. I hope you're able to find a way to mitigate what you're going through, whether it be with a pup or other means.
Hi! I trained my service dog as a medical alert dog for asthma. Little did I know he would also help me a great deal with my migraines! It took a while for me to realize that he was alerting me 4 HOURS ahead of time! I started getting my meds ready and was hyper-aware. Now, I rarely have such bad incidences with migraines because my service dog taught me to be aware of signals!!
Oh. My. Gosh. I’m in the process of owner-training (at least the basics) my dog for anxiety/ptsd, but I never considered that there were tasks for migraines, etc. This could be game changing for me. Thank you for sharing this information so openly!
You're SO WELCOME. ESA's need no special training, so it would make no sense for them to ever be out in public! They can be such a hazard and distraction to real service dogs.
I just recently realized that a service dog may be helpful for me with my vestibular migraines. I know for a fact that mobility, taking me to the restroom, or to exit a store, because I loose vision range and all vision gets blurry, would be so helpful. Help with balance and fetching pills, water, and snacks, would also be helpful. I was worried that my issues weren't enough to warrant a service dog, but it seems from you that my quality of life could be greatly improved by it. I also worry about the mental acceptance of my new disability too, and the fact that a service dog would solidify that. I think it's something I should look into though.

CM as in Chiari Malformation? If so, I have it too, had it start presenting a little six years ago. It’s rare to find another Chiarian. If a service dog could help you, definitely consider looking into it! I’ve been researching about getting an SD for over a year and a half now. None of the brain and spinal surgeries, medications, or anything have worked so far, and I had to drop of of high school last year because of it. But, that gives me time to invest in something that could really help me live again, in this case a service dog!
They help sooo much for migraines omg my dog at 10 months old alerted me for my migraines 3 times on her own I then trained her for service. She helps so much.
I was diagnosed with Hemiplegic migranes. I would love to be able to have a service dog. I feel like that would help me cope with the pain. Also I would be able to get my meds before half of my body goes paralyzed for the next four hours.
Im so happy you brought up the panic attack parts. I have extremely extremely low blood pressure making it dangerous to be on any blood pressure meds for migraines, and dangerous in general as I can faint easily. I’ve been tracking my migraines and recently realized that within 24 hours of my migraines, my resting heart rate will sit around 115-120 for hoursssss. I thought this was just anxiety for other possible yet unknown reasons. Then yesterday, before my migraine got really bad, my dog who cares more about food than anything in the world did not even care that I had to set my plate of dinner on the floor as I curled up in a ball in a dark corner. She crawled herself into my chest and ignored my fresh food sitting next to me completely. My migraines get so bad I feel almost as if I start to become or have suicidal tendencies. The fact that she had no care for my food (and seriously, she is annoyinggggg when it comes to food) made me realize how helpful getting her trained could be for me because I’m not always lucky enough to be home when this all happens.
I just stumbled upon your channel and I am SO excited to have found it! I have a 6 month old German Shepherd that I am training right now. I need her for mobility and psychiatric tasks, and only dreamed about her doing migraine alerts. I'm ecstatic to know that not only is it possible, it could be a huge tool in my tool belt! I just started watching your channel and I am so happy you are stepping forward by telling your story..What you are going through is not easy. I got a brain injury and I could no longer work as a registered nurse. It was so hard at the time but by working through things I now use it as a opportunity to live a simple happy life. My daughter saw a lot of things that I am sure scared her but it has made her a responsible loving young woman . She is now a preschool teacher with her masters degree. I know you are going to raise an amazing child. Dogs are great!
I have a medical alert dog for migraines of what seems like a similar magnitude. I thought I was having seizures until I finally got paired with a neurologist who said I was likely having complex vestibular and aura migraines, as well as nerve damage around my body from long-term fight-or-flight. I have daily practices to calm my nervous system now and medications and supplements that will help calm my nervous system so hopefully it will heal over time, at least a bit. I’m also adrenal insufficient, struggle with hypoglycemia when the prior is out of whack (so it can be harder to tell what she’s alerting to) and I’m visually impaired so having her helps a lot. Wow, thank you for that insight. Does sound familiar... I had a neuro mention possible demyelination of the CNS. Wonder if it could be a chronic inflammation/fight-or-flight issue like yours. Keeping calm and stabilizing heart rate and blood pressure as much as I can has definitely helped. Looks like you have it down to a science! I'm always baffled by how often seizure comes up inappropriately for migraine patients - we really are tricky. I'm glad you have your pup to mitigate some of the burden, and hopefully the things you're trying will help you feel better. Thanks for taking the time to watch
Yeah I have nerve damage from multiple spine injuries because of a wreck.... Dr's have figured out that the migraines can help trigger my neuropathy into a "gentle" but super long seizure... But it's been chalked up to neuropathy after about 8 years of being passed around and poked on. I've even had flashing lights that bother my photo phobia and throw me into a seizure. (Happened during a seizure test specifically.) It's better than it was at the start, but it complicates everything. My service dog has been a huge help especially when I started having migraines that caused such severe and instant sensory overload that it causes me to pass out. Doggo alerts an hour out, I take meds and continue with blue light blocking (and colorblindness causing) glasses on... Second alert at 30 minutes out gets another dose of meds and a beeline home/ to the car or somewhere safe and hopefully dark.
I am currently training my dog for migraine alerts, she is a multipurpose alert dog, and I am doing task training. I fellow dog training told me about your page, and I have been soaking up the info you have shared. I have suffered from migraines since I was a child. I get very very dizzy, and nauseous during mine. So she helps me pick up items so I don’t have to bend over. Gets drinks from the fridge for me. And will turn off lights. We are still working on the sent training tho. She also helps with anxiety and I zone out bad during my anxiety and she brings me back. I am loving your page so much!!!
This is incredibly helpful, I have horrible migraines and I’m about to get a puppy I’ll train to by my ptsd service dog so knowing she’ll be able to help with migraines as well means I can hopefully be as productive as I wish I could be and get out of the house more.
You are the first person I've heard talk about picking nails/cuticles! I wish I'd heard that before. I destroy my finger tips when I go into migraine spirals. I'm starting training my second service dog, and that is something I'm going to ask the trainer to help me teach puppy to alert to. Thank you!
Yes and In Training! I have chronic migraines just like yours! Apraxia, nausea, ocular, nausea, debilitating pain, etc I also have fibromyalgia and dysautonomia and many other related things

This video was so great! My migraines have been getting worse for years, but recently they changed classification to complex migraines. I lose vision in at least one eye for the duration of most of my migraines now. I also get blurred vision, aura, light and sound sensitivity, and nausea. Almost two years ago I started owner-training my migraine alert service dog. He has become so much more than that now. He is finished with the task training I initially wanted him to have. I am now also adding more guide dog tasks to his wheelhouse as I have started to lose more and more vision with my migraines.
You make me feel so inspired. Inspired to share my story. From having migraines since before I could talk, to having stage 3a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at 16/17yrs old(lymphoma cancer) prescription drug addiction from being given narcotics without even knowing for the first two months what I was taking, my parents just gave me a little medicine cup with my pills in it every day. There was like 12-15 different medications 3 times a day! It wasn’t until my boyfriend at the time saw my discharge papers and saw what medications I was on and the abuse started from there....mental, physical, verbal, every single way you could abuse someone, he went the extent. From 17-19 was very rocking times that I don’t remember too much of now. It was a super traumatic time. At 19-20 I got sober off narcotics for the time cold turkey but turned to alcohol. After a year a constant drinking my boyfriend at that time started taking narcotics for a broke hand and his life then took the same downhill battle with addiction. We both got sober again for a couple years. We got pregnant and had a daughter....after having her post pardum depression hit, along with several other health issues with me. I’m almost 30 and 4 years sober as of November. 1 yr and 4 months of being a single mother! Finally out of abusive traps and can focus on my own health and recovery! The migraine days suck so badly being alone with my daughter. But since she’s almost 6, she’s able to know when I have a migraine and what the means and what that means for her and her day. She knows how to get herself certain foods and make certain foods like a sandwich or bowl of cereal. I always keep a little one liter of milk for her to make cereal with so it’s not too heavy. Also after I had my daughter my teeth all went to hell. They were getting bad before I had her and went all downhill afterwards. The radiation I had to my neck was too much for my teeth And they were rotting from the inside of the tooth to the outside. They looked fine from the outside but were completely rotted on the inside. I’m not exactly sure why radiation does this but the internet has info on it. I ended up having to have surgery and get all my teeth extracted because I had an infection in my head for over a year and it was almost to my brain. And if it got to my brain it was kill me daily quickly. My migraines got MUCH worse when there was infection in my head. They are still just as terrible now they the surgery is complete. I actually have a migraine as i’m writing this. I’ve already taken a tripton but not sure about relief today. Being in treatment and dealing with chronic pain and migraines is so debilitating at times. I’m in a MAT treatment clinic that deals with pain management patients as well, i’m both of those patients. But it’s sucks when I have a migraine and then throw up my medication right away. And it happens more often than it should. I honestly don’t think nobody’s migraines are the same, just like no two migraines are ever the same either. They’re all different, and they all have different symptoms every time. It’s frustrating having so many goals for myself but they all take twice as long as they should. Or having so many aspirations but doubting myself to the point that it never happens. Or my migraines causing me to have even worse procrastinations....”I’ll do it when my head feels better” “I’ll do it when I can actually open my eyes” etc etc. The look and tone of people when I tell them I missed something because I had a migraine is so disrespectful I can’t even handle it!! Just makes me think, those people have NEVER had a migraine!!! And I agree with what you said in one video that said topamax is dopamax!!!! AGREE 100%!!!! If I would of know what it was going to do to me before I took it, I never would I’d taken it!! I lost friendships and work because of how bad that medication changed my personality, and I couldn’t see it, only they could. Then I went through and figured out the ONLY changes I had during that time and it was the topiramate (topamax). So I stopped taking the crap. Went through two weeks of withdrawal, my legs were so swollen for two months they were popping the little veins in the legs, it was so bad. But I pushed through it, and got hit on Halloween on the way to my dads two hours away while driving with a crazy fricking migraine. I ended up not being able to take my daughter trick or treating which was fine because covid, but I was throwing up constantly, everything was dizzy I was white, almost needed to go to the ER, but I made it through 4 DAYS LATER!!!! I had to have my dad drive me and vehicle 2 hrs back home, and then have my sister drive him back home 2 hours. After 4-5 days of a nonstop throwing up migraine with hardly any relief I finally got relief from my swollen legs. Had so many tests done for my swollen legs and got no answers. I have DVTs and have to wear compression socks also. But I didn’t have a clot and didn’t have a pulmonary embolism. But after that migraine and being in bed off my legs for days, I finally got relief. I thank my daughter for being such a good girl. My house was covered in all her stuffed animals and other toys lol. It was a long week y’all! But I will never take topamax again! And I don’t recommend it to anyone!!!!
I have severe migraines (not as serious physically as yours, however), and because of them I have been working on training my dog to help with them, doing light mobility and helping me handle them. Although I will not be using her as a full service dog I am super excited to have help when I am walking and get extremely dizzy, calm me down, support me if I begin to hallucinate and help detect my migraines before they begin so I can take my meds of course! They have been very debilitating even at home for a while and I am ecstatic to have someone to help in the future. :)
I’ve had service dogs and ESAs for years. I am now training my new service puppy. It’s super hard because I’ve only owned one sd at a time. But, my current sd has hip dysplasia so I can’t use her for mobility but she can do everything else. She is a multi purpose. I am keeping her as she is family. My kids and everyone love her. My new sd puppy will be multi use and hopefully mobility in future. I have to find a orthopedic vet to confirm he will be ok to do mobility and bracing when he gets older. We will be moving so finding a new one will be hard. I know a lot of sd handlers don’t know to get their dogs X-ray etc at an orthopedic vet for mobility/bracing. Otherwise, you hurt your partner. It sucks I can’t use my sd to full extent, and training a new prospect is super hard with my other one here. They just want to play or be with each other. Lol Also, how did you train migraine alert? I suffer from migraines and see a neurologist frequently and never thought of training for that in all my years of owning sd present/past. I suffer from the same migraines as you. I’m out of commission usually for days. I hate meds. I do other things to cope. But, if I can get an alert, I can do those things earlier and maybe it will help then go away sooner. Also, in other areas, I’ve never had problems training a sd puppy in non pet friendly stores etc, until now. Any advice on how to handle people naysaying issues when training a sd pup in public? People don’t realize socialization and desensitizing are the first steps besides potty training. Lol

They keep getting more frequent and I even had a hemiplegic migraine for the first time recently. I have friends with disabilities who have been urging me into looking into a migraine service dog. I was skeptical because to so many people (doctors included) migraine isn’t “bad enough” to need a service dog. This video is so validating and I think I will be making the steps towards getting a service dog and finding the right trainer. Thank you so, so much. I have had migraines since Middle School, so one would think they are hormone related. Now in my 60s, I still get migraines. My neurologist is terrific and supported Botox injections every 3 months has helped. I have a new puppy and will start service training for migraines. I have a Tibet Terrier who is very sensitive and very loving, so I am feeling pretty positive to start training.
I have wanted a service dog 🐕🦺 ever since I was 5 years old but I couldn't have a service dog 🐕🦺 because my mom is scared of dogs and I respect that and then when I moved into a care facility I still wasn't allowed to have a service dog 🐕🦺 and again I respect that to even though it is really! Upsetting to me and also I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when I was 2 months old
Migraine service dogs were not a thing when I was suffering from migraines, from 1975 to 1980. But even if they were, I was never as thoroughly disabled as you are, Jen. A migraine once a week, or every two weeks, left me functional most of the time. I never had any difficulty sensing when a migraine was inbound, either. If I was away from home, and felt one inbound, I'd go home and wait it out. They never 'snuck up on me.' In retrospect, my experience with migraines, while definitely unpleasant, was at the shallow end of the pool, so to speak. It could have been worse, and wasn't. What you've got going on is much, much more difficult, less predictable, more extreme, and more of a threat to normal routines. And more dangerous, too. An unplanned fall is nothing to joke about. Neither is confusion/disorientation, memory loss or anxiety. A service dog trained to help you sounds like a wonderful idea. And you've proved that it is.
Bigelows also has a peppermint tea that's supposed to help with nausea if you are ever in the mood to try a different flavor or want something say a little christmassy.
Just found your channel and commenting on a 2nd video lol. I have migraines and a chiari malformation (I noticed you have a video talking about CSF fluid leaks so I’m assuming you know of or have one also). I have always wanted a service dog but didn’t know realistic tasks they could do for me. Than you again for posting and helping me learn more about my disability so I can continue to learn how to accommodate myself (it’s been 15 years but I’m still learning how to live easier).
Dermatillomania, the finger-picking, is related to anxiety and OCD. Just thought you might want to know if you’d didn’t already and there weren’t already a million comments about it! My whole family and I have dermatillomania and trychotillomania. (Hair and skin picking.)
I have crippling migraines at least once a week, with a number of mental issues. Because my medicine doesn't work if I take it too late, a service dog would be life changing. Though I've heard that some dogs don't sense migraines for an alert?
You can train a dog for migraine alert using scent training, but I suppose there's a chance they won't pick it up (?). A service dog is a huge commitment, but can absolutely be life changing if you qualify for one!
I have Vestibular Migraines so my sdit alerts me about 5 to 10 mins before the migraine hits. Usually when she alerts within a couple minutes i start to feel the beginning symptoms of the migraine. If i do not acknowledge her alert she will keep alerting every couple minutes. She first started naturally alerting around 6 months old(i got her a month prior at 5 months old). It wasn't something I trained just like my retired SD she too naturally alerted to my Migraines and non-epileptic siezures. Her migraine tasks include retrieval, counter balance and forward momentum(she will not start learning this till next year after she turns 2; sadly Vestibular Migraines cause vertigo so these tasks help a lot), turning off lights, finding an exit(when im having a migraine it sometimes cause lights to be too bright and noises to be too loud which in turn can make me panic and or get confused, and the command follow so if I'm having a hard time getting somewhere due to vertigo or confusion I can have her follow some one while I'm holding onto her harness to help me get to an exit, a chair, or navigate through large crowds towards an exit or bathroom or something.
@@caseymariedaniels6941 actually she said in the beginning he was for migraines when she got him, which is a debilitating illness and is a valid reason to have an SD when we’ll researched as medications do NOT always work (I’ve been to three doctors and have taken many medications and non have worked now I can only grit and bare it, not fun in the middle of:work, class, grocery shopping etc)
Thank you for sharing. I am almost 16 with chronic migraines and was researching these wonderful dogs. It would make going to school and work easier as well as like you mentioned in the video just remembering to take my pills( because to be honest I forget to being a 15 year old boy). I also have problems with balance and I’ve actually fallen down my stairs and broken my arm before from a migraine. Love this insight and I’m thinking about getting one but I don’t know if I can afford it but I will save up and have a supportive extended family. Good luck to you and wish me luck👍
A service dog can be super helpful, but they're also a lot of work with care & ongoing training, and they come with even more to remember than you already have on your plate. Thank you for this. I have never heard anyone talk about their service dog alerting for migraines. I have had migraines since my teens but ever since my spinal cord injury in my early 40's (I'm 52) I have the far worse "cervicogenic" migraines and even on two preventative medications I get frequent migraines. How does a dog learn to alert for migraine? I will be getting my puppy soon and her focus will be on mobility work but I would LOVE if she could learn to alert for a migraine before it starts. Thank you again. People without migraines, or even people like me, who during my teens got standard "classic migraines" (which suck badly enough, the pain and the puking) don't understand the sensory overload, brain fog, forgetfulness and other problems that other types of migraines cause. Keep up the great content.
@@phisical7162 we put out stress hormones and they have a scent. My headache was strong but I had been wearing a mask and he alerted to my mask. He has been taught to bump alert for seizures but I didn't have one that day. We have figured out that we can take scent samples and get different alerts.
Thank you for sharing this video. In 1989 I had a head trama in a car accident. I damage a Manger nerve in my skull not brain. In fact I finished my PhD after my injury. However, I have pain and migraine every day. 24/7. I actually black out and fall. Please if you get or read this tell me how to search out a migraine dog
I have litter of 15 lab puppies. Keeping one to be my migraine alert dog. Keeping eye on the nosiest ones. Any help in training tips will be appreciated. Ty. Chronic daily migraine warrior. Autonomic symptoms as in eye running, stuffiness, eye pain, dizziness, aphasia, nausea and balance issues. All left sided pain mostly ocular with facial and scalp numbness. Vylepti infusions have been great help. Rescue is naratriptan and Reyvow. Topamax is preventative with Botox also.

Wow I have terrible migraines that actually effect the rest of my body it feels like u just keep getting shocked in my hands and legs and head of course. Does anyone else get this? It makes my heart go super fast and tacicartic and makes me feel sick. I also have PTSD. I'm getting a Italian Mastiff I think I will try and train her for tasks and to alert

How does he know that you are having a migraine? I've always wondered how they can tell. With my chronic migraines I didn't think a service dog was an option, but with cancer now and other side effects it would be interesting to see what he can see and knows how to alert to. :)

I was thinking about service dogs, and their use in my country. I know they exist. But I only know them to be generally used by blind people. So, because of my curiosity, I've found out there have only been laws about allowing service dogs inside establishments since 2016, and because so few people (who aren't blind) have them, those laws have very little in common with reality. They're often still seen as "normal" dogs, and it's difficult to prove you have a real service dog. So... I'm happy for you that you that buddy helps you so much. And I hope my country is going to keep improving for disabled people. Because how it works now is literally giving them money and hoping the problems get solved by either able people, or that the problems just, "go away". In other words, there is often very little indepence to be found by people with disabilities. (In my knowledge at least.)
@@nicoles7652 I lived in Brussels for several years & I never did see any service dogs while I was there. Nor in any of my travels to nearby countries including the Netherlands. (that's why I asked) I hope things catch up soon!
@@cavlizzy Dogs in general are very popular here but often abysmally trained. And then people wonder why I sometimes avoid dogs even though I love them. I just don't need to be bitten by an Akita. And I don't need massive dogs (for my stature) jumping up on me or humping my leg. (All of which have happened. Though the Akita was more an unfortunate accident, because it turned out she was mentally ill)
@@cavlizzy Oh, and service dogs (or "hulphonden") do exist here. I mainly know them to be uses for epilepsy (in children). There are even several organisations. It's just very very small scale I guess. And specific. The same problems exist for deaf people. They exist. But you can't even learn sign language if you want to without enrolling in superrr expensive classes. And deaf people are also very insular here. Even when there are people who can communicate. So. Being disabled is not vey nice here for varied interaction.

Iam very interested because I have a chronic illness i have had a constant headache sence I was 9 iam 28 now my headache turn into migraines at times ,I cant squat down or bend over because of my head that happened after getting my shunt taken out ,so once I move because I cant were iam at I definitely wanting to look into this iam so happy I came across your video ,thank you for sharing & iam sorry you have to go through what you do I know its not easy
I have migraines, and they're really bad. My migraines are so weird. Left side isn't as bad, but it kills me. Right side is like, painful, i cry, feel nauseated, depends on the level. Middle is fevers, nausea, hurling, etc. Usually my migraines are a level 7. I don't take medication, but the next dog our family gets, after our current dog goes, (she's a Boxer, and she's old.), we're planning on getting a Labradoodle. I wanna train, or get the dog trained to alert for my migraines, or help my restless leg syndrome
How tough to have such painful migraines! The pain alone can get you nauseous, I definitely relate to that. Labradoodles are wonderful dogs! I hope you're able to land on a great prospect for you and your family. What a difference the early alert makes

Oh how i wish i had a migraine alert dog. My migraines are so very bad. My neurologist asked me, “how many migraines days do you have per month?” Simple and easy question, right? Well, it should be. What is faster though is to tell her how many days a month I DON’T have a migraine.

Hi. I have severe chronic migraines like you, and I have tachycardia ascwell. My migraine have out me in ICU for days because the migraine even though I was given pain meds always raises my BP and triggers my tachycardia. I need to train my dog myself as I cant afford a trainer. Do you have any tips or tricks I can use? Ive been having migraines for 42 years! Thank you so much!
Just wondering how you train them to alert to migraines? Is it something they have to do naturally? I think it would be really helpful for me but no idea if I just got a dog they'd be good for that kind of work
I've started passing out recently most likely from my migraines so im hoping if I can get through some behavioral/anxiety things with my sdit, I can train her to either do get help, do dpt, or stand over me so people dont step on me (still deciding what would be most beneficial for us).
I'm hoping to be able to get a service dog in the next few years. I have some saving to do first. I wish I could have another golden retriever, we grew up with them & they're seriously my favourite breed. Unfortunately, I'm now allergic, so I would need at least some poodle in the dog to help with that. Not to say that there's anything wrong with poodles, but I wouldn't be able to get another golden retriever, which makes me kinda sad.

I have chronic complex migraine, and have been looking at a service dog. I don’t know where to start. I know my insurance may cover it and I also know my land lord could not renew my lease because of it and I live in a place that housing is a challenge. It’s a balance and frustration of trying to do what is best for myself.
How would you go about getting a migraine service dog is there a way to self train one because like you I suffer with serious severe migraines and if I don’t notice the start coming on I’m extremely ill. Vomiting for hours dislike of light. My eyes like your shooting back and forth. Usually so bad I can’t get to the toilet without throwing up. I take sumatriptan 100 mg ones last migraine I had was most severe I’ve had I took 3 sumatriptan in the end and was still seriously ill. I was taken to hospital once with suspected meningitis as well. I feel like I’m dying when I get one. I’d love to be able to train a dog to alert me so I can take precautions. I also have many other disabilities. Pots is the latest ones they are looking at. I also have anxiety and panic attacks and picking behaviours I suffer with ptsd and EUPD also. Life’s hard and migraines make it even harder.
I had no idea there were Migraine service dogs! Also frustrating that I have to find people on the internet to find out about conditions instead of doctors.

My heart goes out to you, it is so difficult when they're sneaky. I was there for my first 2 years of chronic migraines. It's anxiety-inducing! TIPS FOR NAUSEA: - Ginger tea (here is my favorite, ginger peach!! amzn.to/3aMA0At) - Dramamine Naturals, which is just ginger extract (amzn.to/2YhX0Vz) - I had excellent results with prescription promethazine for the nausea (when I could keep the pill down) - if you are open to it, CBD oil held under the tongue (it is completely non-psychoactive) I used to have a ton of nausea and vomiting with mine because they're sometimes vestibular. How did you get diagnosed for specific migraines. I've had migraines since 2013 and no doctor can agree which migraine I have (so far daily chronic debilitating migraines) proper migraine treatments, or how to handle it. I feel like I have so many different kinds that I'm always in pain. Also, how did you get a SD for migraines.
Different doctors have told me different kinds. They said vestibular migraine because I get vertigo, but also "complex" or "complicated" because of the rougher stuff... also been told basilar migraine, basilar/brainstem aura. I just accept that I'm a mixed bag and call it a day.

Hey I have migraine to but when I get migraines they hurt a lot that I start crying because of how bad it hurt and I start to throw up, when I take my pills my migraine is still there and I get a little dizzy and I have trouble breathing when I have migraines do I need a service dog or not because I don’t know if I need one or not and I don’t just want to randomly get a service dog because I don’t have migraines very often but if I do they hurt a lot so can you try and tell me if I need a service dog or not?
Getting a service dog is a very personal decision. Talk to your doctor about it and see what they recommend. As stated in many of these videos, having a service dog is a LOT of work! But totally worth it!
might not want to microwave a tea bag if it has the staple because there could be a fire but other than that i love this video im 14 and ive been having migranes almost every day it hurts so bad on my right side i also have autism and other mental problems im going to see my doctor in a few weeks and see about medication because it hurts so bad so i have to try and sleep all day and drink some tea
Any tea drinker will tell you to microwave the water first, then add the tea bag after! But for the sake of the video it was better this way. Sorry to hear you're suffering through so much. I hope your doctor is able to help you find some relief!
I've recently been diagnosed with vestibular migraines. Mine only happen when I'm asleep then I wake up nauseous and really dizzy. They can last around 8hrs and they're getting more frequent. I worry about them coming on and I think that makes it worse. I'm in the UK so if anyone has any advice about how severe or frequent they need to be to be eligible for an SD I'd be so so grateful.
do you have any service dog training suggestions? I'm training my dog to remind me to check my blood sugar and eat more regularly. to avoid crashes. I've been doing it around when I take her out to potty. and she nudges the bag I keep my meter in. which has a bell on it to get my attention. I do have headaches and I think they're hormonal. I need to be checked for pots as well. I've also been teaching her to lay on me when I'm feeling light headed. and to hold that position. she's not great at it but I've only been training her myself for about 2 months so far.
give the dog a treat every day at the times you should be checking your blood and/or eating. Set alarms for a while so that you're giving them at exactly the same times every day. Keep them in a separate sealed baggie in your meter bag if you have room in there. You can have him nudge the meter bag to get that treat if you want, but that may not be very helpful if you're out and it's in your purse or car or something. Having him nudge you instead might be more helpful, but by keeping them in that bag he'll be determined to get you to that bag at that time, so if you're distracted and miss the first que, he'll be persistent about it. If you get him into a habit of having a treat every day at certain times, he WILL remember, and he will let you know loud and clear that it's time for treats. (which happen to be in your meter bag, so yay for remembering lol)
So I don't have chronic I have episodic that I've noticed becoming more frequent. My dog has issues and is definitely too old to become a true service dog. But is there any reason to not train him to alert if he notices one coming while we are at home and maybe if I asked for him to come to work (His issues are only with other dogs not humans (completely understanding if they say no of course))
I often wonder if a service dog would be helpful. I get vestibular migraines, and I am dizzy almost every day. Even if it just helps me get out of the house without the fear I’m gonna get super dizzy, especially while driving with my kids in the car. Can a service dog help more than one family member? Like my daughter has anxiety and starting to get migraines, my son has POTS and migraines, and I have minor POTS and vestibular migraine. It would be easy to have one dog to do it all instead of trying to get 3 dogs. Is that possible? Does anyone know?
How do you tell the difference btwn him just wanting to give you a kiss and a migraine alert? dogs love to kiss. I got our pup for BOTh my son and I and trying to figure out how to tell her alerts.
He isn't a licky dog, so he doesn't lick outside of alerts. I will say he gets a serious look on his face, so it is obvious it's not playful. Sorry I can't be more helpful!
I have a question (Sorry if you answered this during the video, I haven’t seen the whole vid but am planning to watch it), I’m getting a puppy soon to train to be my first multi purpose SD, they’ll be trained as Psychiatric, mobility and migraine alert. Is Migraine alert counted as medical alert?? Because my friend is saying if it is and I have an access issue I should say their medical alert because I have major anxiety and would much rather avoid those confrontations, I’m not saying medical alert dogs don’t get discriminated against but I’m just scared if I say the dogs psychiatric/ anxiety alert and response that they’d be called an ESA, because people are dumb and bring their untrained ESA’s into public 🙄
A migraine alert is a medical alert! However, in order to be legit, the handler would need to be considered *disabled* by the disease according to the rules set by the ADA, and the dog's task would need to mitigate it. And, of course, PA training. That make sense? I think that anxiety of coming off wrong is common among handlers, I get that way.
@@MommingwithMigraine I live in Australia so we have the DDA, but under the DDA my migraines are disabling. I’m a minor who suffers with migraines triggered by to much or to little water, and sometimes just water in general and my migraines get so bad I can’t move off the couch for a day or so. I also can’t take pills, my body rejects them and takes it out on me so I’m stuck with kids medicine (I’m a teenager way above the kids med limit thing) it’s why I’m getting the dog so I can catch it early and don’t have to wait hours for the meds to kick in. They are expensive if you get one fully trained. I owner-trained, so outside of gear and training tools, he's just about the cost of a pet. It's a great option if the cost is too high but you have the time and energy to train. I know the time and energy can be just as much of a setback, though. I hope you're able to find a way to mitigate what you're going through, whether it be with a pup or other means.

Hi! I trained my service dog as a medical alert dog for asthma. Little did I know he would also help me a great deal with my migraines! It took a while for me to realize that he was alerting me 4 HOURS ahead of time! I started getting my meds ready and was hyper-aware. Now, I rarely have such bad incidences with migraines because my service dog taught me to be aware of signals!!
THAT IS THE BEST!! I hope you feel a little more free knowing that these beasts can't sneak up on you anymore 💜
Oh. My. Gosh. I’m in the process of owner-training (at least the basics) my dog for anxiety/ptsd, but I never considered that there were tasks for migraines, etc. This could be game changing for me. Thank you for sharing this information so openly!

You're SO WELCOME. ESA's need no special training, so it would make no sense for them to ever be out in public! They can be such a hazard and distraction to real service dogs.

I just recently realized that a service dog may be helpful for me with my vestibular migraines. I know for a fact that mobility, taking me to the restroom, or to exit a store, because I loose vision range and all vision gets blurry, would be so helpful. Help with balance and fetching pills, water, and snacks, would also be helpful. I was worried that my issues weren't enough to warrant a service dog, but it seems from you that my quality of life could be greatly improved by it. I also worry about the mental acceptance of my new disability too, and the fact that a service dog would solidify that. I think it's something I should look into though.

CM as in Chiari Malformation? If so, I have it too, had it start presenting a little six years ago. It’s rare to find another Chiarian. If a service dog could help you, definitely consider looking into it! I’ve been researching about getting an SD for over a year and a half now. None of the brain and spinal surgeries, medications, or anything have worked so far, and I had to drop of of high school last year because of it. But, that gives me time to invest in something that could really help me live again, in this case a service dog!
They help sooo much for migraines omg my dog at 10 months old alerted me for my migraines 3 times on her own I then trained her for service. She helps so much.

I was diagnosed with Hemiplegic migranes. I would love to be able to have a service dog. I feel like that would help me cope with the pain. Also I would be able to get my meds before half of my body goes paralyzed for the next four hours.

Im so happy you brought up the panic attack parts. I have extremely extremely low blood pressure making it dangerous to be on any blood pressure meds for migraines, and dangerous in general as I can faint easily. I’ve been tracking my migraines and recently realized that within 24 hours of my migraines, my resting heart rate will sit around 115-120 for hoursssss. I thought this was just anxiety for other possible yet unknown reasons. Then yesterday, before my migraine got really bad, my dog who cares more about food than anything in the world did not even care that I had to set my plate of dinner on the floor as I curled up in a ball in a dark corner. She crawled herself into my chest and ignored my fresh food sitting next to me completely. My migraines get so bad I feel almost as if I start to become or have suicidal tendencies. The fact that she had no care for my food (and seriously, she is annoyinggggg when it comes to food) made me realize how helpful getting her trained could be for me because I’m not always lucky enough to be home when this all happens.

I just started watching your channel and I am so happy you are stepping forward by telling your story..What you are going through is not easy. I got a brain injury and I could no longer work as a registered nurse. It was so hard at the time but by working through things I now use it as a opportunity to live a simple happy life. My daughter saw a lot of things that I am sure scared her but it has made her a responsible loving young woman . She is now a preschool teacher with her masters degree. I know you are going to raise an amazing child. Dogs are great!

I have a medical alert dog for migraines of what seems like a similar magnitude. I thought I was having seizures until I finally got paired with a neurologist who said I was likely having complex vestibular and aura migraines, as well as nerve damage around my body from long-term fight-or-flight. I have daily practices to calm my nervous system now and medications and supplements that will help calm my nervous system so hopefully it will heal over time, at least a bit. I’m also adrenal insufficient, struggle with hypoglycemia when the prior is out of whack (so it can be harder to tell what she’s alerting to) and I’m visually impaired so having her helps a lot. Wow, thank you for that insight. Does sound familiar... I had a neuro mention possible demyelination of the CNS. Wonder if it could be a chronic inflammation/fight-or-flight issue like yours. Keeping calm and stabilizing heart rate and blood pressure as much as I can has definitely helped. Looks like you have it down to a science! I'm always baffled by how often seizure comes up inappropriately for migraine patients - we really are tricky. I'm glad you have your pup to mitigate some of the burden, and hopefully the things you're trying will help you feel better. Thanks for taking the time to watch
Yeah I have nerve damage from multiple spine injuries because of a wreck....
Dr's have figured out that the migraines can help trigger my neuropathy into a "gentle" but super long seizure...
But it's been chalked up to neuropathy after about 8 years of being passed around and poked on.
I've even had flashing lights that bother my photo phobia and throw me into a seizure.
(Happened during a seizure test specifically.)
It's better than it was at the start, but it complicates everything.
My service dog has been a huge help especially when I started having migraines that caused such severe and instant sensory overload that it causes me to pass out.
Doggo alerts an hour out, I take meds and continue with blue light blocking (and colorblindness causing) glasses on...
Second alert at 30 minutes out gets another dose of meds and a beeline home/ to the car or somewhere safe and hopefully dark.
I am currently training my dog for migraine alerts, she is a multipurpose alert dog, and I am doing task training. I fellow dog training told me about your page, and I have been soaking up the info you have shared. I have suffered from migraines since I was a child. I get very very dizzy, and nauseous during mine. So she helps me pick up items so I don’t have to bend over. Gets drinks from the fridge for me. And will turn off lights. We are still working on the sent training tho. She also helps with anxiety and I zone out bad during my anxiety and she brings me back. I am loving your page so much!!!
This is incredibly helpful, I have horrible migraines and I’m about to get a puppy I’ll train to by my ptsd service dog so knowing she’ll be able to help with migraines as well means I can hopefully be as productive as I wish I could be and get out of the house more.

You are the first person I've heard talk about picking nails/cuticles! I wish I'd heard that before. I destroy my finger tips when I go into migraine spirals. I'm starting training my second service dog, and that is something I'm going to ask the trainer to help me teach puppy to alert to. Thank you!

This video was so great! My migraines have been getting worse for years, but recently they changed classification to complex migraines. I lose vision in at least one eye for the duration of most of my migraines now. I also get blurred vision, aura, light and sound sensitivity, and nausea. Almost two years ago I started owner-training my migraine alert service dog. He has become so much more than that now. He is finished with the task training I initially wanted him to have. I am now also adding more guide dog tasks to his wheelhouse as I have started to lose more and more vision with my migraines.
You make me feel so inspired. Inspired to share my story. From having migraines since before I could talk, to having stage 3a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at 16/17yrs old(lymphoma cancer) prescription drug addiction from being given narcotics without even knowing for the first two months what I was taking, my parents just gave me a little medicine cup with my pills in it every day. There was like 12-15 different medications 3 times a day! It wasn’t until my boyfriend at the time saw my discharge papers and saw what medications I was on and the abuse started from there....mental, physical, verbal, every single way you could abuse someone, he went the extent. From 17-19 was very rocking times that I don’t remember too much of now. It was a super traumatic time. At 19-20 I got sober off narcotics for the time cold turkey but turned to alcohol. After a year a constant drinking my boyfriend at that time started taking narcotics for a broke hand and his life then took the same downhill battle with addiction. We both got sober again for a couple years. We got pregnant and had a daughter....after having her post pardum depression hit, along with several other health issues with me. I’m almost 30 and 4 years sober as of November. 1 yr and 4 months of being a single mother! Finally out of abusive traps and can focus on my own health and recovery! The migraine days suck so badly being alone with my daughter. But since she’s almost 6, she’s able to know when I have a migraine and what the means and what that means for her and her day. She knows how to get herself certain foods and make certain foods like a sandwich or bowl of cereal. I always keep a little one liter of milk for her to make cereal with so it’s not too heavy. Also after I had my daughter my teeth all went to hell. They were getting bad before I had her and went all downhill afterwards. The radiation I had to my neck was too much for my teeth And they were rotting from the inside of the tooth to the outside. They looked fine from the outside but were completely rotted on the inside. I’m not exactly sure why radiation does this but the internet has info on it. I ended up having to have surgery and get all my teeth extracted because I had an infection in my head for over a year and it was almost to my brain. And if it got to my brain it was kill me daily quickly. My migraines got MUCH worse when there was infection in my head. They are still just as terrible now they the surgery is complete. I actually have a migraine as i’m writing this. I’ve already taken a tripton but not sure about relief today. Being in treatment and dealing with chronic pain and migraines is so debilitating at times. I’m in a MAT treatment clinic that deals with pain management patients as well, i’m both of those patients. But it’s sucks when I have a migraine and then throw up my medication right away. And it happens more often than it should. I honestly don’t think nobody’s migraines are the same, just like no two migraines are ever the same either. They’re all different, and they all have different symptoms every time. It’s frustrating having so many goals for myself but they all take twice as long as they should. Or having so many aspirations but doubting myself to the point that it never happens. Or my migraines causing me to have even worse procrastinations....”I’ll do it when my head feels better” “I’ll do it when I can actually open my eyes” etc etc. The look and tone of people when I tell them I missed something because I had a migraine is so disrespectful I can’t even handle it!! Just makes me think, those people have NEVER had a migraine!!! And I agree with what you said in one video that said topamax is dopamax!!!! AGREE 100%!!!! If I would of know what it was going to do to me before I took it, I never would I’d taken it!! I lost friendships and work because of how bad that medication changed my personality, and I couldn’t see it, only they could. Then I went through and figured out the ONLY changes I had during that time and it was the topiramate (topamax). So I stopped taking the crap. Went through two weeks of withdrawal, my legs were so swollen for two months they were popping the little veins in the legs, it was so bad. But I pushed through it, and got hit on Halloween on the way to my dads two hours away while driving with a crazy fricking migraine. I ended up not being able to take my daughter trick or treating which was fine because covid, but I was throwing up constantly, everything was dizzy I was white, almost needed to go to the ER, but I made it through 4 DAYS LATER!!!! I had to have my dad drive me and vehicle 2 hrs back home, and then have my sister drive him back home 2 hours. After 4-5 days of a nonstop throwing up migraine with hardly any relief I finally got relief from my swollen legs. Had so many tests done for my swollen legs and got no answers. I have DVTs and have to wear compression socks also. But I didn’t have a clot and didn’t have a pulmonary embolism. But after that migraine and being in bed off my legs for days, I finally got relief. I thank my daughter for being such a good girl. My house was covered in all her stuffed animals and other toys lol. It was a long week y’all! But I will never take topamax again! And I don’t recommend it to anyone!!!!
I have severe migraines (not as serious physically as yours, however), and because of them I have been working on training my dog to help with them, doing light mobility and helping me handle them. Although I will not be using her as a full service dog I am super excited to have help when I am walking and get extremely dizzy, calm me down, support me if I begin to hallucinate and help detect my migraines before they begin so I can take my meds of course! They have been very debilitating even at home for a while and I am ecstatic to have someone to help in the future. :)
I’ve had service dogs and ESAs for years. I am now training my new service puppy. It’s super hard because I’ve only owned one sd at a time. But, my current sd has hip dysplasia so I can’t use her for mobility but she can do everything else. She is a multi purpose. I am keeping her as she is family. My kids and everyone love her. My new sd puppy will be multi use and hopefully mobility in future. I have to find a orthopedic vet to confirm he will be ok to do mobility and bracing when he gets older. We will be moving so finding a new one will be hard. I know a lot of sd handlers don’t know to get their dogs X-ray etc at an orthopedic vet for mobility/bracing. Otherwise, you hurt your partner. It sucks I can’t use my sd to full extent, and training a new prospect is super hard with my other one here. They just want to play or be with each other. Lol Also, how did you train migraine alert? I suffer from migraines and see a neurologist frequently and never thought of training for that in all my years of owning sd present/past. I suffer from the same migraines as you. I’m out of commission usually for days. I hate meds. I do other things to cope. But, if I can get an alert, I can do those things earlier and maybe it will help then go away sooner. Also, in other areas, I’ve never had problems training a sd puppy in non pet friendly stores etc, until now. Any advice on how to handle people naysaying issues when training a sd pup in public? People don’t realize socialization and desensitizing are the first steps besides potty training. Lol

I have been having severe migraines for the last almost year now. They keep getting more frequent and I even had a hemiplegic migraine for the first time recently. I have friends with disabilities who have been urging me into looking into a migraine service dog. I was skeptical because to so many people (doctors included) migraine isn’t “bad enough” to need a service dog. This video is so validating and I think I will be making the steps towards getting a service dog and finding the right trainer. Thank you so, so much. I have had migraines since Middle School, so one would think they are hormone related. Now in my 60s, I still get migraines. My neurologist is terrific and supported Botox injections every 3 months has helped. I have a new puppy and will start service training for migraines. I have a Tibet Terrier who is very sensitive and very loving, so I am feeling pretty positive to start training.
I have wanted a service dog 🐕🦺 ever since I was 5 years old but I couldn't have a service dog 🐕🦺 because my mom is scared of dogs and I respect that and then when I moved into a care facility I still wasn't allowed to have a service dog 🐕🦺 and again I respect that to even though it is really! Upsetting to me and also I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when I was 2 months old
Migraine service dogs were not a thing when I was suffering from migraines, from 1975 to 1980.
But even if they were, I was never as thoroughly disabled as you are, Jen. A migraine once a week, or every two weeks, left me functional most of the time. I never had any difficulty sensing when a migraine was inbound, either. If I was away from home, and felt one inbound, I'd go home and wait it out. They never 'snuck up on me.'
In retrospect, my experience with migraines, while definitely unpleasant, was at the shallow end of the pool, so to speak. It could have been worse, and wasn't.
What you've got going on is much, much more difficult, less predictable, more extreme, and more of a threat to normal routines. And more dangerous, too. An unplanned fall is nothing to joke about. Neither is confusion/disorientation, memory loss or anxiety. A service dog trained to help you sounds like a wonderful idea. And you've proved that it is.
Bigelows also has a peppermint tea that's supposed to help with nausea if you are ever in the mood to try a different flavor or want something say a little christmassy.
Just found your channel and commenting on a 2nd video lol. I have migraines and a chiari malformation (I noticed you have a video talking about CSF fluid leaks so I’m assuming you know of or have one also). I have always wanted a service dog but didn’t know realistic tasks they could do for me. Than you again for posting and helping me learn more about my disability so I can continue to learn how to accommodate myself (it’s been 15 years but I’m still learning how to live easier).
You are a great trainer. I'm not nearly as good. My dog learns commands in spite of my clumsy training.
Dermatillomania, the finger-picking, is related to anxiety and OCD. Just thought you might want to know if you’d didn’t already and there weren’t already a million comments about it! My whole family and I have dermatillomania and trychotillomania. (Hair and skin picking.)
I have crippling migraines at least once a week, with a number of mental issues. Because my medicine doesn't work if I take it too late, a service dog would be life changing. Though I've heard that some dogs don't sense migraines for an alert?
You can train a dog for migraine alert using scent training, but I suppose there's a chance they won't pick it up (?). A service dog is a huge commitment, but can absolutely be life changing if you qualify for one!
I have Vestibular Migraines so my sdit alerts me about 5 to 10 mins before the migraine hits. Usually when she alerts within a couple minutes i start to feel the beginning symptoms of the migraine. If i do not acknowledge her alert she will keep alerting every couple minutes. She first started naturally alerting around 6 months old(i got her a month prior at 5 months old). It wasn't something I trained just like my retired SD she too naturally alerted to my Migraines and non-epileptic siezures. Her migraine tasks include retrieval, counter balance and forward momentum(she will not start learning this till next year after she turns 2; sadly Vestibular Migraines cause vertigo so these tasks help a lot), turning off lights, finding an exit(when im having a migraine it sometimes cause lights to be too bright and noises to be too loud which in turn can make me panic and or get confused, and the command follow so if I'm having a hard time getting somewhere due to vertigo or confusion I can have her follow some one while I'm holding onto her harness to help me get to an exit, a chair, or navigate through large crowds towards an exit or bathroom or something.

@@caseymariedaniels6941 actually she said in the beginning he was for migraines when she got him, which is a debilitating illness and is a valid reason to have an SD when we’ll researched as medications do NOT always work (I’ve been to three doctors and have taken many medications and non have worked now I can only grit and bare it, not fun in the middle of:work, class, grocery shopping etc)

Thank you for sharing. I am almost 16 with chronic migraines and was researching these wonderful dogs. It would make going to school and work easier as well as like you mentioned in the video just remembering to take my pills( because to be honest I forget to being a 15 year old boy). I also have problems with balance and I’ve actually fallen down my stairs and broken my arm before from a migraine. Love this insight and I’m thinking about getting one but I don’t know if I can afford it but I will save up and have a supportive extended family. Good luck to you and wish me luck👍

Thank you for this. I have never heard anyone talk about their service dog alerting for migraines. I have had migraines since my teens but ever since my spinal cord injury in my early 40's (I'm 52) I have the far worse "cervicogenic" migraines and even on two preventative medications I get frequent migraines. How does a dog learn to alert for migraine? I will be getting my puppy soon and her focus will be on mobility work but I would LOVE if she could learn to alert for a migraine before it starts. Thank you again. People without migraines, or even people like me, who during my teens got standard "classic migraines" (which suck badly enough, the pain and the puking) don't understand the sensory overload, brain fog, forgetfulness and other problems that other types of migraines cause. You can scent train for migraine headaches like you can for seizures. There are instructional videos on UA-cam.

@@phisical7162 we put out stress hormones and they have a scent. My headache was strong but I had been wearing a mask and he alerted to my mask. He has been taught to bump alert for seizures but I didn't have one that day. We have figured out that we can take scent samples and get different alerts.

I have litter of 15 lab puppies. Keeping one to be my migraine alert dog. Keeping eye on the nosiest ones. Any help in training tips will be appreciated. Ty. Chronic daily migraine warrior. Autonomic symptoms as in eye running, stuffiness, eye pain, dizziness, aphasia, nausea and balance issues. All left sided pain mostly ocular with facial and scalp numbness. Vylepti infusions have been great help. Rescue is naratriptan and Reyvow. Topamax is preventative with Botox also.

Wow I have terrible migraines that actually effect the rest of my body it feels like u just keep getting shocked in my hands and legs and head of course. Does anyone else get this? It makes my heart go super fast and tacicartic and makes me feel sick. I also have PTSD. I'm getting a Italian Mastiff I think I will try and train her for tasks and to alert

How does he know that you are having a migraine? I've always wondered how they can tell. With my chronic migraines I didn't think a service dog was an option, but with cancer now and other side effects it would be interesting to see what he can see and knows how to alert to. :)

I was thinking about service dogs, and their use in my country. I know they exist. But I only know them to be generally used by blind people. So, because of my curiosity, I've found out there have only been laws about allowing service dogs inside establishments since 2016, and because so few people (who aren't blind) have them, those laws have very little in common with reality. They're often still seen as "normal" dogs, and it's difficult to prove you have a real service dog.
So... I'm happy for you that you that buddy helps you so much. And I hope my country is going to keep improving for disabled people. Because how it works now is literally giving them money and hoping the problems get solved by either able people, or that the problems just, "go away". In other words, there is often very little indepence to be found by people with disabilities. (In my knowledge at least.)

@@cavlizzy Dogs in general are very popular here but often abysmally trained. And then people wonder why I sometimes avoid dogs even though I love them. I just don't need to be bitten by an Akita. And I don't need massive dogs (for my stature) jumping up on me or humping my leg. (All of which have happened. Though the Akita was more an unfortunate accident, because it turned out she was mentally ill)
@@cavlizzy Oh, and service dogs (or "hulphonden") do exist here. I mainly know them to be uses for epilepsy (in children). There are even several organisations. It's just very very small scale I guess. And specific.
The same problems exist for deaf people. They exist. But you can't even learn sign language if you want to without enrolling in superrr expensive classes. And deaf people are also very insular here. Even when there are people who can communicate. So. Being disabled is not vey nice here for varied interaction.

I have migraines, and they're really bad. My migraines are so weird. Left side isn't as bad, but it kills me. Right side is like, painful, i cry, feel nauseated, depends on the level. Middle is fevers, nausea, hurling, etc. Usually my migraines are a level 7. I don't take medication, but the next dog our family gets, after our current dog goes, (she's a Boxer, and she's old.), we're planning on getting a Labradoodle. I wanna train, or get the dog trained to alert for my migraines, or help my restless leg syndrome

I’m watching this video years Later but Im training mine to be a psychiatric service dog and she would paw my leg even when I wasn’t doing my leg bounce little did I know she was alerting me that I was having or gonna have a migraine then a couple months later I found out I had migraines
Oh how i wish i had a migraine alert dog. My migraines are so very bad. My neurologist asked me, “how many migraines days do you have per month?” Simple and easy question, right? Well, it should be. What is faster though is to tell her how many days a month I DON’T have a migraine.

She's a licensed California medical assistance dog who lives in Southern California with her mom. She's been a pleasure to know and love. Grace also mitigates to her anxiety.

Hi. I have severe chronic migraines like you, and I have tachycardia ascwell. My migraine have out me in ICU for days because the migraine even though I was given pain meds always raises my BP and triggers my tachycardia. I need to train my dog myself as I cant afford a trainer. Do you have any tips or tricks I can use? Ive been having migraines for 42 years!

I've started passing out recently most likely from my migraines so im hoping if I can get through some behavioral/anxiety things with my sdit, I can train her to either do get help, do dpt, or stand over me so people dont step on me (still deciding what would be most beneficial for us).

I'm hoping to be able to get a service dog in the next few years. I have some saving to do first. I wish I could have another golden retriever, we grew up with them & they're seriously my favourite breed. Unfortunately, I'm now allergic, so I would need at least some poodle in the dog to help with that. Not to say that there's anything wrong with poodles, but I wouldn't be able to get another golden retriever, which makes me kinda sad.
You might also want to look at Golden Doodles. Best of both worlds, as it were :)

I have chronic complex migraine, and have been looking at a service dog. I don’t know where to start. I know my insurance may cover it and I also know my land lord could not renew my lease because of it and I live in a place that housing is a challenge. It’s a balance and frustration of trying to do what is best for myself.
Over the last few months I've had her my dog has gotten really good at picking up on my anxiety and she'll come up and nuzzle my neck or lick my chin.

How would you go about getting a migraine service dog is there a way to self train one because like you I suffer with serious severe migraines and if I don’t notice the start coming on I’m extremely ill. Vomiting for hours dislike of light. My eyes like your shooting back and forth. Usually so bad I can’t get to the toilet without throwing up. I take sumatriptan 100 mg ones last migraine I had was most severe I’ve had I took 3 sumatriptan in the end and was still seriously ill. I was taken to hospital once with suspected meningitis as well. I feel like I’m dying when I get one. I’d love to be able to train a dog to alert me so I can take precautions. I also have many other disabilities. Pots is the latest ones they are looking at. I also have anxiety and panic attacks and picking behaviours I suffer with ptsd and EUPD also. Life’s hard and migraines make it even harder.
I had no idea there were Migraine service dogs! Also frustrating that I have to find people on the internet to find out about conditions instead of doctors.
Doctors are pretty useless beyond telling you that you have something.

Everything that you have I have and I throw up everyday I have one and i don’t know when they are coming on and by the time I do it’s too late
My heart goes out to you, it is so difficult when they're sneaky. I was there for my first 2 years of chronic migraines. It's anxiety-inducing! TIPS FOR NAUSEA:
- Ginger tea (here is my favorite, ginger peach!! amzn.to/3aMA0At)
- Dramamine Naturals, which is just ginger extract (amzn.to/2YhX0Vz)
- I had excellent results with prescription promethazine for the nausea (when I could keep the pill down)
- if you are open to it, CBD oil held under the tongue (it is completely non-psychoactive)
I used to have a ton of nausea and vomiting with mine because they're sometimes vestibular. Are yours vestibular as well?

How did you get diagnosed for specific migraines. I've had migraines since 2013 and no doctor can agree which migraine I have (so far daily chronic debilitating migraines) proper migraine treatments, or how to handle it. I feel like I have so many different kinds that I'm always in pain. Also, how did you get a SD for migraines.
Different doctors have told me different kinds. They said vestibular migraine because I get vertigo, but also "complex" or "complicated" because of the rougher stuff... also been told basilar migraine, basilar/brainstem aura. I just accept that I'm a mixed bag and call it a day.

Hey I have migraine to but when I get migraines they hurt a lot that I start crying because of how bad it hurt and I start to throw up, when I take my pills my migraine is still there and I get a little dizzy and I have trouble breathing when I have migraines do I need a service dog or not because I don’t know if I need one or not and I don’t just want to randomly get a service dog because I don’t have migraines very often but if I do they hurt a lot so can you try and tell me if I need a service dog or not?
Getting a service dog is a very personal decision. Talk to your doctor about it and see what they recommend. As stated in many of these videos, having a service dog is a LOT of work! But totally worth it!

Any tea drinker will tell you to microwave the water first, then add the tea bag after! But for the sake of the video it was better this way. Sorry to hear you're suffering through so much. I hope your doctor is able to help you find some relief!

Hi!! I’m looking into getting one for my migraines, what exactly is the process to get one?! I’m not having much luck with information online.
I've recently been diagnosed with vestibular migraines. Mine only happen when I'm asleep then I wake up nauseous and really dizzy. They can last around 8hrs and they're getting more frequent. I worry about them coming on and I think that makes it worse. I'm in the UK so if anyone has any advice about how severe or frequent they need to be to be eligible for an SD I'd be so so grateful.
do you have any service dog training suggestions? I'm training my dog to remind me to check my blood sugar and eat more regularly. to avoid crashes. I've been doing it around when I take her out to potty. and she nudges the bag I keep my meter in. which has a bell on it to get my attention.
I do have headaches and I think they're hormonal. I need to be checked for pots as well. I've also been teaching her to lay on me when I'm feeling light headed. and to hold that position. she's not great at it but I've only been training her myself for about 2 months so far.
give the dog a treat every day at the times you should be checking your blood and/or eating. Set alarms for a while so that you're giving them at exactly the same times every day. Keep them in a separate sealed baggie in your meter bag if you have room in there. You can have him nudge the meter bag to get that treat if you want, but that may not be very helpful if you're out and it's in your purse or car or something. Having him nudge you instead might be more helpful, but by keeping them in that bag he'll be determined to get you to that bag at that time, so if you're distracted and miss the first que, he'll be persistent about it. If you get him into a habit of having a treat every day at certain times, he WILL remember, and he will let you know loud and clear that it's time for treats. (which happen to be in your meter bag, so yay for remembering lol)
So I don't have chronic I have episodic that I've noticed becoming more frequent. My dog has issues and is definitely too old to become a true service dog. But is there any reason to not train him to alert if he notices one coming while we are at home and maybe if I asked for him to come to work (His issues are only with other dogs not humans (completely understanding if they say no of course))

I often wonder if a service dog would be helpful. I get vestibular migraines, and I am dizzy almost every day. Even if it just helps me get out of the house without the fear I’m gonna get super dizzy, especially while driving with my kids in the car. Can a service dog help more than one family member? Like my daughter has anxiety and starting to get migraines, my son has POTS and migraines, and I have minor POTS and vestibular migraine. It would be easy to have one dog to do it all instead of trying to get 3 dogs. Is that possible? Does anyone know?

He isn't a licky dog, so he doesn't lick outside of alerts. I will say he gets a serious look on his face, so it is obvious it's not playful. Sorry I can't be more helpful!
I have a question (Sorry if you answered this during the video, I haven’t seen the whole vid but am planning to watch it), I’m getting a puppy soon to train to be my first multi purpose SD, they’ll be trained as Psychiatric, mobility and migraine alert. Is Migraine alert counted as medical alert?? Because my friend is saying if it is and I have an access issue I should say their medical alert because I have major anxiety and would much rather avoid those confrontations, I’m not saying medical alert dogs don’t get discriminated against but I’m just scared if I say the dogs psychiatric/ anxiety alert and response that they’d be called an ESA, because people are dumb and bring their untrained ESA’s into public 🙄
A migraine alert is a medical alert! However, in order to be legit, the handler would need to be considered *disabled* by the disease according to the rules set by the ADA, and the dog's task would need to mitigate it. And, of course, PA training. That make sense? I think that anxiety of coming off wrong is common among handlers, I get that way.
@@MommingwithMigraine I live in Australia so we have the DDA, but under the DDA my migraines are disabling. I’m a minor who suffers with migraines triggered by to much or to little water, and sometimes just water in general and my migraines get so bad I can’t move off the couch for a day or so. I also can’t take pills, my body rejects them and takes it out on me so I’m stuck with kids medicine (I’m a teenager way above the kids med limit thing) it’s why I’m getting the dog so I can catch it early and don’t have to wait hours for the meds to kick in.
