The first example is actually Buddy showing intelligent disobedience the same way a guide dog would if their owner wanted to walk somewhere impossible. He looks for a different option even though it is not the exact thing he was taught. He is so clever!
I think my favorite "mistake" of my service dog was one day (pre covid) we were at dinner and he alerted a stranger that they were having an allergic reaction then told me. She was allergic to almonds that were in the cake. He didn't stop alerting until she took Benadryl. It made a very confused human. :-) His first priority is always me but if someone else is having an issue he is trained on he is on it. :-)
My service dog often alerts my wheelchair of my worsening pain 😂 Oliver also got upset with a doctor at the emergency room yesterday (was in for my blood pressure issues as they got really bad..) & due to the doc making me upset by trying to say shit like "well maybe you just have uti or something" and due to me having issues with my bp & then getting upset my bp got even worse = Oliver gave me alerts and then just placed himself between me and the doc and wouldn't let the doc near me again cause my symptoms worsened after she entered the room 😅 I too am obsessed with my dog 🐕🦺
Awesome!!!!!!! My service dog growls when I’m not respecting her first warnings of a person that is upsetting me. And she’ll also strong sit if I’m not calm/ not anxious enough to keep moving :-) she’s my angel on earth
Wow, if you can, I think you might want to report that doctor. They really shouldn't be in the medical field if they can't be understanding of mental differences... Buut also your dog is frickin adorable! 😁
Your stories have something in common - Buddy's sense of smell is incredible! You used the tissue, he scented the migraine. You touched the polenta, he scented the migraine on the polenta. Your mask, he scented a previous migraine. What an incredible dog!
I have daily migraines, sometimes I think it’s gone and it will come back. I don’t know how a service dog would help my situation... he would be alerting me all day long about migraine, Pots...poor dog wouldn’t get a break!
I love that he understands he's supposed to alert to the scent *no matter what* even when he MUST know it doesn't make sense, like the polenta and the cup. Obviously, these things are not you, but the scent is there, so darn it, he's going to alert!... and then figure out where you are so you also know the polenta is getting a migraine. As are you. XD
My favorite stories are when someone's service dog finds another person having the same issues and goes to alert/protect them. I've heard/seen it with seizure and anxiety service dogs a lot.
My mom and I both have service dogs and they constantly alert both of us. I had stomach surgery a few years ago and for stupid reasons, my service dog couldn’t fly with us to Hawaii for it (this was before I moved here permanently) but my mom lived here so hers came with us to Oahu for the surgery. Her little diabetic alert dog decided that she was mine that week. We rented an ohana house in Oahu but it was up some stairs so once I got up there, I wasn’t moving for the week. Lena decided she couldn’t even leave me long enough for her to go pee. If I got up to pee, she walked between my legs the entire way. This 7 lbs dog was gonna do her damndest to catch me if I decided to fall. When my mom carried her down the stairs to the yard to pee. The second she put her down Lena would bolt backup stairs and cry at the door for me. This was new behavior, she’d never alerted me before, but that entire week she completely ignored my mom and kept alerting me to take my pain meds. It was hilarious. Now my mother and I both live together with our service dogs and they BOTH tend to watch out for both of us. It’s pretty cute.

Even with the anxiety service dogs- okay, this is where I admit I am slightly (really) afraid of dogs- but this giant Black Lab(off duty), notes my high anxiety, notes it gets worse as he gets closer, puts a chair between me and him, then sticks his head between the armrests to lay his head on my lap. It was the cutest and... well, it worked. After a while, my anxiety got better, and as soon as I was alright, he picked up his head and trotted back to his mistress's side. I have been in awe of service dogs, and dogs in general, ever since
Melissa Weber that was one smart pup! They amaze me daily. Mine went to college with me and lived in the dorms (she’s now 13; not as young as she used to be but as she’s a small dog, she has a lot of life left in her). During midterms and finals week people kept knocking on my door asking if Maggie was off duty because they simply needed a dog hug to calm their stress. (They all respected the vest, but they also knew when she was in my dorm room she rarely wore her vest so she could be a normal dog, and I’d already given permission for them to come).

@@mollytaylor8122 Thankfully no... it’s because if Hawaii’s quartine laws. There’s no rabies in Hawaii so all dogs coming in have to have had a tider test to make sure no rabies, and it has to be done 3 months in advance. Though a service dog doesn’t have to do the 3 months, we didn’t know this at the time... and the test is $250 (though it lasts 3 years). I was a week late getting her test done. She could have flown with me had we known about the service dog waiver. Luckily when I moved here, I found out about it and actually flew back early to get her when we found out about it. She’s been here with me since 2013. 💖
I had someone's service dog alert us that my one year olds blood sugar may be dropping the guy was kind and had given here a piece of his emergency chocolate and after five minutes the dog stopped alerting we are currently getting her tested for an official diagnosis
I think it's impressive that all of these "wrong" alerts were actually real alerts of things you had touched/breathed on. And besides your mask they were all correct alerts for that day. Go Buddy!
I love how getting a ball out of the pantry is a valid reason to get in there. With some individuals I feel like toys or other "non-serious" items don't always get that status, but you see and realize that for Buddy, it is very important. I also love how you reward him for every little signal he gives you and you trust him to think for himself. Such a wonderful relationship between the two of you!

Wait why have none of my doctors mentioned that there are service dogs for migraines? I get debilitating migraines that have no warning and I have been stuck in a parking lot or store multiple times until my meds kick in enough for my vision to return or the world to stop spinning enough for me to safely drive home and sleep for a week
I’m 25 weeks along and I feel the obsession with like everything. My now retired mobility/medical alert dog has alerted 1 friend to a massive spike in heart rate that was caused by unknown exposure to an allergen, and has also recently alerted a sweater I had been wearing when he alerted me to a bp drop earlier in the day. Dogs are hysterical and wonderful and you are right, we don’t deserve them.
Well Buddy has an amazing nose! And I think it's actually super smart of him to have figured out to go alert your husband when you didn't respond to the alert.
The tissue guilty-alert is adorable. It’s so sweet how our pets, especially a service dog who knows his job is serious, take steps to take care of us and any time you watch a dog struggle with a moral dilemma. This was an adorable combination of the two.... and he made His Choice, your health, like the wonderful boy he sounds like. Both as a well trained working dog and having his own priorities show. Like humans, even if excellently trained self-interest can come first so it’s all hugs and smiles for me that he did the great and funny job of weighing it and putting you first. :)
Thank you for this video. My first service dog was like yours, found out she alerts me by accident. And then we trained together - shes a superstar! She’s older and so I’m helping train my second service dog now. Like the first,, Georgia has a natural way that just needs to be learned by both of us.. my first dog alerted me with a low growl that absolutely couldn’t be better- for me. Georgia, 2nd dog, uses high pitched squeaks.... which is fortunately now reminding me that each of us are perfect in our own ways. Incredibly grateful! Thank you for these videos
I want to thank you for putting up the video of you during a migraine, and why you need a service dog. I have my service dog primarily for the same reason. Woodford alerts me the same way to my migraines. I also have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, MCAS and dysautonomia... he really helps me with those as well --- esp the passing out from the dysautonomia/blood pressure changes. Buddy is amazing! And you are amazing with how you are with him too 🥰🥰🥰 (allowing him to think for himself, and understand & knowing when he alerts something or someone other than you, that you should check it out (and so far, he’s been right). It’s great that Buddy alerted your husband too! And that your husband also understood that something was up and not just that, he woke you to make sure and both he and Buddy did the right thing. Service dogs never fail to amaze me. My pug is not a service frog and is not trained to detect or leery or comfort or anything like that, but she does! She does different things for an anxiety attack, a panic attack, and for a flashback. She also slightly varies her response depending on the severity of each issue. And because I also have severe fatigue and my face swells I struggle to wake up, she’ll start to nudge and frantically (well more upbeat tbh start walking around me and then over me on my bed or sofa (sometimes my mind is awake, but my body won’t move and she knows that too and will try to wake me). Her movement around me so close and her budgeting me and whining does eventually wake me. She gets more concerned the longer I’m asleep. My chi will watch and usually let my pug deal with whatever is going on and will come to me running if I call her (she wants to be there but she usually waits unless my pug is off toileting or having some water or food). She will come to me sometimes aswell though of her own accord. She’s just used to seeing my pug take charge as I had my pug long before my chi. Dogs are so precious 🥰🥰🥰
My SD alerts strange things when the migraine scent is left on it too. Happens with clothes a lot especially! I was actually worried he didn’t understand what the alert was and that he had generalized licking to be a way to get rewarded for a while. Turns out I now have to do laundry much more often or his nose is working over time alerting the laundry basket 😂
Your buddy is a great buddy. I am so glad you have him as a service dog. I have a service dog policy for the blind. Yes I am blind and I have a I’ve been inside for 24 years. And I love dogs I can help with dogs. And whenever I do not have a dog in my house I cannot go to sleep
I just found your channel, and I'm really enjoying your attitude and approach to your canine partnership, as well as your sense of humour. We are volunteer guide dog boarders, so we basically get to care for awesome dogs when they can't work for some reason (sick owners, etc.) The main things this has taught us is that a)not a single one of these dogs doesn't have their own little quirks, and b)a smart, healthy working dog who is not currently working takes a LOT of physical and mental tiring out! The last dog we had for quite a while, and we're still in touch with her owner. She reports that she's working well, and has remembered all their regular routes as well as learning a new one. She does, however, default to guiding her owner on the route to the park where she goes to free run, instead of the train station further down the same road. When told to walk on, she audibly huffs out a sigh, then carries on to the station!
Nice to see another person with a dog that does migraine alert. My dog was trained for diabetes alert, but started reacting when I had hemiplegic migraines, so with some training and treats she started alerting for them too. Her alert is when she lays down spinx style facing me and barks once or twice with her "indoor voice". If I don't listen she gets increasing more persistent and eventually will not stop pawing at me. As you said, it's a life saver when you are at a store. Before I had a dog I would have issues literally getting stranded out in public due to the visual aura, confusion and one sided muscle weakness/numbness. My dog often gives me a few hours heads up so I have time to get home before the migraine hits.
I have one of those. OMG!!!! I don't know how i lived my life before. Because of having this type of Service Dogs in my life for rhe last 20 years I have a beautiul 14 year old daughter. I know in my heart that without her my first Service Dog i wouldn't have her or anything eles that i now have. So i thank you for sharing Buddy. Jake and I are greatful for you guys.
Found your channel yesterday and I’m so happy I did! You’re a natural in front of the camera and it’s so interesting and helpful to learn more about migraines and POTS. It’s fascinating to watch Buddy work, too! Thank your so, so much for sharing so much about your life. I’m considering training our future dog to alert asthma. The whole family’s got it and even though mine’s quite severe I got diagnosed as an adult and still haven’t gotten used to the fact that I can medicate when I get really winded, constricted or have a really tired day (due to lack of oxygen). I’ve gotten used to living with it and can go for days thinking I’m just out of shape or getting sick 😅 And thus forgetting to take my on demand medication. To get alerted would be absolutely fantastic.

My husbands psychiatric service dog, Teddy Road Dog The Toy Maltese, kept gesturing towards a woman with a stroller. I felt like i needed to say something and explain what he was doing. Turns out he was alerting her about her special needs daughter, who was nonverbal autistic, having a seizure. These babies are pretty amazing❤

Awwwwwwwww Buddy is just the cutest. I'm working on getting a service dog for pretty much the same medical alerts and allergy alerts. I might just end up adopting and training them myself. Can you do a video explaining how you scent trained Buddy? I have seen many UA-cam videos and I like having many references and techniques to try.
I think that’s so awesome that he was actually able to alert things that you had handled or that I’ve been close to your face. Like you said, it shows that he’s both really attuned to you and really attuned to his job of learning. Also the fact that he never made a grab for the food and seem to kind of be apologetic about the tissue sure that he still knows what he supposed to leave. I am on the waiting list for my first Guide Dog right now I’m super excited. I live with my younger brother and but with the kids toys and stuff laying around I think has proofing the dog instead of dog proofing the house is a really great idea. Can you do a video on how you train him to leave each individual thing
Buddy is amazing, all of those are him alerting things that smelled like you or in the first example, your husband because he couldn't get to you, and it's great knowing that if there is an emergency he knows to get him if you're out of reach. I actually thought it was going to be a completely different video. Today in the subway while I was commuting I had an episode, for the whole hour trip I was various degrees on the verge of passing out. Having discovered your videos I wondered, if a service dog had been there, would they have done something or do they only do it for their owner? I thought this video might answer the question. It didn't, but I'm glad I watched it because it was great. Buddy is the best of boys.
wauw, he was so right in all of the cases. not only did he react to the facemask with the smell but he also reacted to the facemask when the smell was less obvious (because of duration the smell gets less) keep lstening to your dog and give him the best hugs and cuddles possible
Hi there I stumbled onto your video out of nowhere. I have long q-t syndrome a genetic heart condition that sometimes causes me to pass out or have seizures from time to time. I have a Great Pyrenees, Australian Shepherd and border collie mix named Angel. I've never trained her as A service dog but when I have seizures she lays down on top of me. She stays with me until I'm fully aware, same thing if I pass out. I love her so much and she's good and patient with my kids. She's the most gentle dog ever. She loves kids and gives the best cuddles. We have A chihuahua who gives hugs too. He's actually nice and loves people and kids too. Any dog can be A good dog if their raised right.
I just watched a few of your videos and I'm so happy I came across this. I do not have any of your symptoms but I work in security and come across different people all the time. Knowing the little bit that you shared might come in handy if I come across someone with these symptoms. Of course ill always call an ambulance but knowledge about this might help me help someone one day. Thank you for sharing.

@@TheArmybrat12 Sometimes people act like their dog is just stupid or that its the dogs fault it gets into the garbage but if you aren't consistent with them and don't use their language to communicate its not their fault that they don't respond to english. Because of this the dog gets yelled at or sent away and it has no idea why so it is confused. Dogs who know what's expected of them because they were taught how they understand have a more fulfilled and happy life.
Your dog did the best solution available to him. i would also alert someone else if I couldnt get to the right person, so they could check on the person in need.
Yes! Alexa has a couple of different "skills" that can be used as phone alerts. We had one set up for my mom so that she could tell Alexa she was in trouble, and I would get a phone call saying that she was having an emergency.
Stumbled onto your channel yesterday and it was a very welcome, interesting and educational experience that compelled me into learning more about this and other areas of medicine. I think like with alot of less visible symptoms talking and informing gives a bit of empathy where it is severely lacking in the lives of people who may struggle with less obvious conditions. I’ve found it super interesting how yours tends to scent by VOCs initially then by licking the same spot to re-sample - mine was initially trained for SAR/tracking (malinois - DO NOT GET ONE IF YOU ARE NOT A WORKING DOG HANDLER FFS), so she’ll she’ll pick up scents from waaaay out just because she’s bred primarily for scenting and high work drive and has a huge amount of training on aging/etc. She’ll just air scent from a cover and paw incrementally when things get better or worse, and then she’ll actually alert for the same things while tracking lost persons which is fascinating and explains a huge amount about behavioral changes that are otherwise bewildering
My POTS service dog also alerts other people (my mom mostly) to when my bp drops. I used to ride horses and she would always come with me for my safety. She has alerted my best friend and family to my bp dropping several times while I was on a horse and without her I would have passed out.
@@LeeAnneRMT not always. It’s also very dangerous and against the ADA for a dog to go get someone in public since the dog will be wondering around by itself trying to find someone. This can lead to the dog getting injured or even stolen unfortunately. According to the ADA a service dog must be under handler control at all time so if it’s wondering around looking for someone it’s not under handler control. In the case that I pass out (luckily hasn’t happened yet since I have Maddies alerts) she will lay on my arm and lick my hands and face. I get very close to passing out at home and I will lay on the ground and she always does this. Others have trained their dog a controlled bark to get peoples attention while still staying with their handler.
I know not everyone is the same and not eveything that helps one person will help someone else. I hope this makes sense, im currently in the middle of a bad migraine, but my husband got me yellow glasses for people who have astigmatism when they drive at night and they are really soothing on my eyes. I thought maybe they might be a thing to try if you haven't tried them already.

A service dog in my family would consistently alert the wrong person after his retirement. He lived with my sister for a while, but when he became more of a hassle than a help, she retired him and he came to live with us. One of the things he was trained to respond to was an exasperated sigh, but when he moved he reacted to my mother's relieved "I'm home now" sigh by alerting and trying to compress her. His climbing on her would cause her real distress and this would harden his resolve to alert and compress causing a downward spiral :p. Luckily he has stopped having such strong reactions to any of our signals, but he will still come check on us when we are having a particularly bad day :).
Be careful re-using masks! Me and my S/O thought it was totally fine, until she developed recurring tonsilitis! It stopped when we put two and two together; new mask everyday!
If it was every day I'd definitely be more aware of it, but I'm way too pregnant to be out more than twice a week and my bladder barely lasts an hour when I do leave 😅
Buddy is sooo adorable!! On the other hand, in my country people avoid polenta if they already have low blood pressure.. it is said that it Lowers it further..I just know I feel sleepy after having it :)
Yeah, I don't throw my masks away either (the paper ones.) Don't wash the cloth ones after every use. I DO spray them with Lysol though, a heavy wet spray. Hoping that's enough.
I have chronic pain with endo and IBS ... when I get that cramp in my back I know it’s about to spread all over and I’ll be down for at least an hour in pain, he will come and sit right by me and lick my face or hand. He’s an ESA but not trained for this stuff. Dogs can just sense that you’re in pain and they want to help. It’s so cute and helps so much.

I was shopping with a friend and her service dog and she kept alerting me to the fact that my friend was about to have an arthritic flare up (my friend had went outside to get her wallet out of the car and the dog for some reason stayed with me...he's fairly new at alerting so I don't think he realizes yet that when he's on duty he's supposed to follow her everywhere she goes). I instinctively knew it was some kind of alert so when she came back I let her know what he'd done.
I have a variant of migraine with aura (not quite hemiplegic migraine) and have had them since age 9 (I’m 50 now). I just discovered your channel quite by accident. My migraines have had several cycles of severity and frequency over the years. I did manage to have two children really close together (on purpose) about 17 months apart because I needed restart certain medications ASAP. It was very difficult with a disability to have them that close together, but at times it was great because they played together. Parenthood while having a disability is very challenging, but it will be the most rewarding in the end. I’ve never regretted it. Congratulations! (Also, I’ve sewn/made cloth masks that I either donated or sold. I have migraines 3-4 days per week lasting 8+ hours. I wonder if my scent would also trigger someone else’s service dog?)

I stumbled upon your channel and I am hooked. I am fascinated by how in tune Buddy is to you. Amazing! You are able to be so independent as a result. I do have a few questions, though. 1. Does your husband work from home or nearby? In your prepare to faint video he came pretty fast when he didn’t hear from you. 2. What are you going to do about your health issues (migraines, fainting, heart/bp surges/drops, possible c-section with anesthesia issues) during labor? 3. How are you going to handle motherhood and being alert and able to care for baby? I am sure you have plans - and if I’m being nosy I apologize. Maybe you have addressed these and I haven’t caught up yet. You are a strong, independent woman and Buddy is fantastic!
Short on time but 1, husband and I both work from home and 2, for labor we just have to trust our team and pray for a healthy delivery! I have my husband and a doula so if Migraine Jen shows up, there will be a caretaker to advocate.
Ok so this is kind of a sad story. We went to Home depot for a fall decoration. The thing i wanted was next to a bunch of halloween decorations of "bone dogs" they scared him so badly he turned away lay down and threw up. He would not look at me at all as i was between him and a bunch of dead dogs, as far as he knew, but we moved away quickly and he was fine and happy in a minute or two. So avoid this service dog hazard. Home D was ok too.
@Nyah Burkhart thanks he is fine. he is a standard and was set to be the stud in a puppy mill making doodles and i think he may have seen dead dogs. He had a hard start but is spoiled now.

I’m new to your channel and you just popped up 🤷🏼♀️ but I am very glad you did! I have some medical conditions that are getting worse and I have decided to try and train my dog as a service dog. His natural instinct is on point but he was previously abused which as caused some issues that kinda disqualifies him as a service dog I believe. But I have no one who understands what I’m going thru or to help with self training questions or to give suggestions. I am alone in this. I would love it if I could pick your brain sometime bc I am getting to the point where it’s becoming dangerous for me....

I’m so glad I stumbled upon this today. I’m having a lot of migraines that affect my ability to walk and I feel like I’m on the verge of fainting. I’ve been to the Mayo Clinic for this but as you know it is hard to figure out everything that is going on and convey it to a doctor. I will definitely be using my blood pressure cuff to see if it is going low during those attacks. Ironically I figured out salt made me feel a lot better 😁 you have been very helpful. Sorry so long.

My friends doggo is an ESA but she is absolutely on a mission if I am unconscious. If I have gone for a lie down and have sunk into adrenal crisis (aka medical emergency and I'm not going to wake up but will get increasingly poorly and go into shock etc) she will come and find me and practically break down the door to the room I'm in and then when she's convinced someone to let her in the room she will try her hardest to wake me up, and the fact that her efforts don't work is usually enough to alert another human to the problem. I also wake up from a crisis much faster if the doggo is there nudging my hand :) none of this has been trained but its happened lots of times now (due to a period where my health was very unstable so I stayed with this friend for a while). She clearly smells something but idk what!
I can totally relate. I also have a service dog that alerts for migraines. Sometimes I can't find the off button for the alerts. 😂 Mine has used my migraines to get quite a few snacks.
So what was in the cup? Having just watched your latest video about a potential CSF leak this all makes sense. Especially if you do the occasional wipe of the hand/back of the hand on the nose drips and then pick up polenta.

The first example is actually Buddy showing intelligent disobedience the same way a guide dog would if their owner wanted to walk somewhere impossible. He looks for a different option even though it is not the exact thing he was taught. He is so clever!
I think my favorite "mistake" of my service dog was one day (pre covid) we were at dinner and he alerted a stranger that they were having an allergic reaction then told me. She was allergic to almonds that were in the cake. He didn't stop alerting until she took Benadryl. It made a very confused human. :-)
His first priority is always me but if someone else is having an issue he is trained on he is on it. :-)

My service dog often alerts my wheelchair of my worsening pain 😂 Oliver also got upset with a doctor at the emergency room yesterday (was in for my blood pressure issues as they got really bad..) & due to the doc making me upset by trying to say shit like "well maybe you just have uti or something" and due to me having issues with my bp & then getting upset my bp got even worse = Oliver gave me alerts and then just placed himself between me and the doc and wouldn't let the doc near me again cause my symptoms worsened after she entered the room 😅 I too am obsessed with my dog 🐕🦺

Your stories have something in common - Buddy's sense of smell is incredible! You used the tissue, he scented the migraine. You touched the polenta, he scented the migraine on the polenta. Your mask, he scented a previous migraine.

I love that he understands he's supposed to alert to the scent *no matter what* even when he MUST know it doesn't make sense, like the polenta and the cup. Obviously, these things are not you, but the scent is there, so darn it, he's going to alert!... and then figure out where you are so you also know the polenta is getting a migraine. As are you. XD

My favorite stories are when someone's service dog finds another person having the same issues and goes to alert/protect them. I've heard/seen it with seizure and anxiety service dogs a lot.
My mom and I both have service dogs and they constantly alert both of us. I had stomach surgery a few years ago and for stupid reasons, my service dog couldn’t fly with us to Hawaii for it (this was before I moved here permanently) but my mom lived here so hers came with us to Oahu for the surgery. Her little diabetic alert dog decided that she was mine that week. We rented an ohana house in Oahu but it was up some stairs so once I got up there, I wasn’t moving for the week. Lena decided she couldn’t even leave me long enough for her to go pee. If I got up to pee, she walked between my legs the entire way. This 7 lbs dog was gonna do her damndest to catch me if I decided to fall. When my mom carried her down the stairs to the yard to pee. The second she put her down Lena would bolt backup stairs and cry at the door for me. This was new behavior, she’d never alerted me before, but that entire week she completely ignored my mom and kept alerting me to take my pain meds. It was hilarious. Now my mother and I both live together with our service dogs and they BOTH tend to watch out for both of us. It’s pretty cute.

Even with the anxiety service dogs- okay, this is where I admit I am slightly (really) afraid of dogs- but this giant Black Lab(off duty), notes my high anxiety, notes it gets worse as he gets closer, puts a chair between me and him, then sticks his head between the armrests to lay his head on my lap. It was the cutest and... well, it worked. After a while, my anxiety got better, and as soon as I was alright, he picked up his head and trotted back to his mistress's side. I have been in awe of service dogs, and dogs in general, ever since
Melissa Weber that was one smart pup! They amaze me daily. Mine went to college with me and lived in the dorms (she’s now 13; not as young as she used to be but as she’s a small dog, she has a lot of life left in her). During midterms and finals week people kept knocking on my door asking if Maggie was off duty because they simply needed a dog hug to calm their stress. (They all respected the vest, but they also knew when she was in my dorm room she rarely wore her vest so she could be a normal dog, and I’d already given permission for them to come).

@@mollytaylor8122 Thankfully no... it’s because if Hawaii’s quartine laws. There’s no rabies in Hawaii so all dogs coming in have to have had a tider test to make sure no rabies, and it has to be done 3 months in advance. Though a service dog doesn’t have to do the 3 months, we didn’t know this at the time... and the test is $250 (though it lasts 3 years). I was a week late getting her test done. She could have flown with me had we known about the service dog waiver. Luckily when I moved here, I found out about it and actually flew back early to get her when we found out about it. She’s been here with me since 2013. 💖
I had someone's service dog alert us that my one year olds blood sugar may be dropping the guy was kind and had given here a piece of his emergency chocolate and after five minutes the dog stopped alerting we are currently getting her tested for an official diagnosis

I love how getting a ball out of the pantry is a valid reason to get in there. With some individuals I feel like toys or other "non-serious" items don't always get that status, but you see and realize that for Buddy, it is very important. I also love how you reward him for every little signal he gives you and you trust him to think for himself. Such a wonderful relationship between the two of you!

I get debilitating migraines that have no warning and I have been stuck in a parking lot or store multiple times until my meds kick in enough for my vision to return or the world to stop spinning enough for me to safely drive home and sleep for a week

I’m 25 weeks along and I feel the obsession with like everything. My now retired mobility/medical alert dog has alerted 1 friend to a massive spike in heart rate that was caused by unknown exposure to an allergen, and has also recently alerted a sweater I had been wearing when he alerted me to a bp drop earlier in the day. Dogs are hysterical and wonderful and you are right, we don’t deserve them.
Well Buddy has an amazing nose! And I think it's actually super smart of him to have figured out to go alert your husband when you didn't respond to the alert.

The tissue guilty-alert is adorable. It’s so sweet how our pets, especially a service dog who knows his job is serious, take steps to take care of us and any time you watch a dog struggle with a moral dilemma. This was an adorable combination of the two.... and he made His Choice, your health, like the wonderful boy he sounds like. Both as a well trained working dog and having his own priorities show. Like humans, even if excellently trained self-interest can come first so it’s all hugs and smiles for me that he did the great and funny job of weighing it and putting you first. :)

Thank you for this video. My first service dog was like yours, found out she alerts me by accident. And then we trained together - shes a superstar! She’s older and so I’m helping train my second service dog now. Like the first,, Georgia has a natural way that just needs to be learned by both of us.. my first dog alerted me with a low growl that absolutely couldn’t be better- for me. Georgia, 2nd dog, uses high pitched squeaks.... which is fortunately now reminding me that each of us are perfect in our own ways. Incredibly grateful! Thank you for these videos

I want to thank you for putting up the video of you during a migraine, and why you need a service dog. I have my service dog primarily for the same reason. Woodford alerts me the same way to my migraines. I also have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, MCAS and dysautonomia... he really helps me with those as well --- esp the passing out from the dysautonomia/blood pressure changes. It really means so much to me to see someone like me. Thanks, Jen!
Buddy is amazing! And you are amazing with how you are with him too 🥰🥰🥰 (allowing him to think for himself, and understand & knowing when he alerts something or someone other than you, that you should check it out (and so far, he’s been right). It’s great that Buddy alerted your husband too! And that your husband also understood that something was up and not just that, he woke you to make sure and both he and Buddy did the right thing.
Service dogs never fail to amaze me.
My pug is not a service frog and is not trained to detect or leery or comfort or anything like that, but she does! She does different things for an anxiety attack, a panic attack, and for a flashback. She also slightly varies her response depending on the severity of each issue. And because I also have severe fatigue and my face swells I struggle to wake up, she’ll start to nudge and frantically (well more upbeat tbh start walking around me and then over me on my bed or sofa (sometimes my mind is awake, but my body won’t move and she knows that too and will try to wake me). Her movement around me so close and her budgeting me and whining does eventually wake me. She gets more concerned the longer I’m asleep.
My chi will watch and usually let my pug deal with whatever is going on and will come to me running if I call her (she wants to be there but she usually waits unless my pug is off toileting or having some water or food). She will come to me sometimes aswell though of her own accord. She’s just used to seeing my pug take charge as I had my pug long before my chi.

My SD alerts strange things when the migraine scent is left on it too. Happens with clothes a lot especially! I was actually worried he didn’t understand what the alert was and that he had generalized licking to be a way to get rewarded for a while. Turns out I now have to do laundry much more often or his nose is working over time alerting the laundry basket 😂
Your buddy is a great buddy. I am so glad you have him as a service dog. I have a service dog policy for the blind. Yes I am blind and I have a I’ve been inside for 24 years. And I love dogs I can help with dogs. And whenever I do not have a dog in my house I cannot go to sleep

I just found your channel, and I'm really enjoying your attitude and approach to your canine partnership, as well as your sense of humour.
We are volunteer guide dog boarders, so we basically get to care for awesome dogs when they can't work for some reason (sick owners, etc.) The main things this has taught us is that a)not a single one of these dogs doesn't have their own little quirks, and b)a smart, healthy working dog who is not currently working takes a LOT of physical and mental tiring out!
The last dog we had for quite a while, and we're still in touch with her owner. She reports that she's working well, and has remembered all their regular routes as well as learning a new one. She does, however, default to guiding her owner on the route to the park where she goes to free run, instead of the train station further down the same road. When told to walk on, she audibly huffs out a sigh, then carries on to the station!
Nice to see another person with a dog that does migraine alert. My dog was trained for diabetes alert, but started reacting when I had hemiplegic migraines, so with some training and treats she started alerting for them too. Her alert is when she lays down spinx style facing me and barks once or twice with her "indoor voice". If I don't listen she gets increasing more persistent and eventually will not stop pawing at me. As you said, it's a life saver when you are at a store. Before I had a dog I would have issues literally getting stranded out in public due to the visual aura, confusion and one sided muscle weakness/numbness. My dog often gives me a few hours heads up so I have time to get home before the migraine hits.

I have one of those. OMG!!!! I don't know how i lived my life before. Because of having this type of Service Dogs in my life for rhe last 20 years I have a beautiul 14 year old daughter. I know in my heart that without her my first Service Dog i wouldn't have her or anything eles that i now have. So i thank you for sharing Buddy. Jake and I are greatful for you guys.

Found your channel yesterday and I’m so happy I did! You’re a natural in front of the camera and it’s so interesting and helpful to learn more about migraines and POTS. It’s fascinating to watch Buddy work, too! Thank your so, so much for sharing so much about your life. I’m considering training our future dog to alert asthma. The whole family’s got it and even though mine’s quite severe I got diagnosed as an adult and still haven’t gotten used to the fact that I can medicate when I get really winded, constricted or have a really tired day (due to lack of oxygen). I’ve gotten used to living with it and can go for days thinking I’m just out of shape or getting sick 😅 And thus forgetting to take my on demand medication. To get alerted would be absolutely fantastic.

My husbands psychiatric service dog, Teddy Road Dog The Toy Maltese, kept gesturing towards a woman with a stroller. I felt like i needed to say something and explain what he was doing. Turns out he was alerting her about her special needs daughter, who was nonverbal autistic, having a seizure. These babies are pretty amazing❤

Can you do a video explaining how you scent trained Buddy? I have seen many UA-cam videos and I like having many references and techniques to try.

I think that’s so awesome that he was actually able to alert things that you had handled or that I’ve been close to your face. Like you said, it shows that he’s both really attuned to you and really attuned to his job of learning. Also the fact that he never made a grab for the food and seem to kind of be apologetic about the tissue sure that he still knows what he supposed to leave. I am on the waiting list for my first Guide Dog right now I’m super excited. I live with my younger brother and but with the kids toys and stuff laying around I think has proofing the dog instead of dog proofing the house is a really great idea. Can you do a video on how you train him to leave each individual thing
Buddy is amazing, all of those are him alerting things that smelled like you or in the first example, your husband because he couldn't get to you, and it's great knowing that if there is an emergency he knows to get him if you're out of reach.
I actually thought it was going to be a completely different video. Today in the subway while I was commuting I had an episode, for the whole hour trip I was various degrees on the verge of passing out. Having discovered your videos I wondered, if a service dog had been there, would they have done something or do they only do it for their owner? I thought this video might answer the question. It didn't, but I'm glad I watched it because it was great. Buddy is the best of boys.
wauw, he was so right in all of the cases. not only did he react to the facemask with the smell but he also reacted to the facemask when the smell was less obvious (because of duration the smell gets less) keep lstening to your dog and give him the best hugs and cuddles possible

Hi there I stumbled onto your video out of nowhere. I have long q-t syndrome a genetic heart condition that sometimes causes me to pass out or have seizures from time to time. I have a Great Pyrenees, Australian Shepherd and border collie mix named Angel. I've never trained her as A service dog but when I have seizures she lays down on top of me. She stays with me until I'm fully aware, same thing if I pass out. I love her so much and she's good and patient with my kids. She's the most gentle dog ever. She loves kids and gives the best cuddles. We have A chihuahua who gives hugs too. He's actually nice and loves people and kids too. Any dog can be A good dog if their raised right.
I just watched a few of your videos and I'm so happy I came across this. I do not have any of your symptoms but I work in security and come across different people all the time. Knowing the little bit that you shared might come in handy if I come across someone with these symptoms. Of course ill always call an ambulance but knowledge about this might help me help someone one day. Thank you for sharing.

@@TheArmybrat12 Sometimes people act like their dog is just stupid or that its the dogs fault it gets into the garbage but if you aren't consistent with them and don't use their language to communicate its not their fault that they don't respond to english. Because of this the dog gets yelled at or sent away and it has no idea why so it is confused. Dogs who know what's expected of them because they were taught how they understand have a more fulfilled and happy life.

Yes! Alexa has a couple of different "skills" that can be used as phone alerts. We had one set up for my mom so that she could tell Alexa she was in trouble, and I would get a phone call saying that she was having an emergency.
Stumbled onto your channel yesterday and it was a very welcome, interesting and educational experience that compelled me into learning more about this and other areas of medicine. I think like with alot of less visible symptoms talking and informing gives a bit of empathy where it is severely lacking in the lives of people who may struggle with less obvious conditions. So yeah, thank you for spreading some education and empathy and growth. Same to the people in the comments.

I’ve found it super interesting how yours tends to scent by VOCs initially then by licking the same spot to re-sample - mine was initially trained for SAR/tracking (malinois - DO NOT GET ONE IF YOU ARE NOT A WORKING DOG HANDLER FFS), so she’ll she’ll pick up scents from waaaay out just because she’s bred primarily for scenting and high work drive and has a huge amount of training on aging/etc. She’ll just air scent from a cover and paw incrementally when things get better or worse, and then she’ll actually alert for the same things while tracking lost persons which is fascinating and explains a huge amount about behavioral changes that are otherwise bewildering
My POTS service dog also alerts other people (my mom mostly) to when my bp drops. I used to ride horses and she would always come with me for my safety. She has alerted my best friend and family to my bp dropping several times while I was on a horse and without her I would have passed out.

I always thought if they couldn't get your attention or you needed help they were trained to bring help, or alert someone that you needed help
@@LeeAnneRMT not always. It’s also very dangerous and against the ADA for a dog to go get someone in public since the dog will be wondering around by itself trying to find someone. This can lead to the dog getting injured or even stolen unfortunately. According to the ADA a service dog must be under handler control at all time so if it’s wondering around looking for someone it’s not under handler control.
In the case that I pass out (luckily hasn’t happened yet since I have Maddies alerts) she will lay on my arm and lick my hands and face. I get very close to passing out at home and I will lay on the ground and she always does this. Others have trained their dog a controlled bark to get peoples attention while still staying with their handler.
My dogs the type of dog who knows what she is not allowed to do.. but she doesn't care and does it anyways 🤣

I know not everyone is the same and not eveything that helps one person will help someone else. I hope this makes sense, im currently in the middle of a bad migraine, but my husband got me yellow glasses for people who have astigmatism when they drive at night and they are really soothing on my eyes. I thought maybe they might be a thing to try if you haven't tried them already.

Buddy is a very good dog and I'm glad you have him.
A service dog in my family would consistently alert the wrong person after his retirement. He lived with my sister for a while, but when he became more of a hassle than a help, she retired him and he came to live with us. One of the things he was trained to respond to was an exasperated sigh, but when he moved he reacted to my mother's relieved "I'm home now" sigh by alerting and trying to compress her. His climbing on her would cause her real distress and this would harden his resolve to alert and compress causing a downward spiral :p. Luckily he has stopped having such strong reactions to any of our signals, but he will still come check on us when we are having a particularly bad day :).
Be careful re-using masks! Me and my S/O thought it was totally fine, until she developed recurring tonsilitis! It stopped when we put two and two together; new mask everyday!
If it was every day I'd definitely be more aware of it, but I'm way too pregnant to be out more than twice a week and my bladder barely lasts an hour when I do leave 😅

Yeah, I don't throw my masks away either (the paper ones.) Don't wash the cloth ones after every use. I DO spray them with Lysol though, a heavy wet spray. Hoping that's enough.
I have chronic pain with endo and IBS ... when I get that cramp in my back I know it’s about to spread all over and I’ll be down for at least an hour in pain, he will come and sit right by me and lick my face or hand. He’s an ESA but not trained for this stuff. Dogs can just sense that you’re in pain and they want to help. It’s so cute and helps so much.

I was shopping with a friend and her service dog and she kept alerting me to the fact that my friend was about to have an arthritic flare up (my friend had went outside to get her wallet out of the car and the dog for some reason stayed with me...he's fairly new at alerting so I don't think he realizes yet that when he's on duty he's supposed to follow her everywhere she goes). I instinctively knew it was some kind of alert so when she came back I let her know what he'd done.
I have a variant of migraine with aura (not quite hemiplegic migraine) and have had them since age 9 (I’m 50 now). I just discovered your channel quite by accident. My migraines have had several cycles of severity and frequency over the years. I did manage to have two children really close together (on purpose) about 17 months apart because I needed restart certain medications ASAP. It was very difficult with a disability to have them that close together, but at times it was great because they played together. Parenthood while having a disability is very challenging, but it will be the most rewarding in the end. I’ve never regretted it. Congratulations!
(Also, I’ve sewn/made cloth masks that I either donated or sold. I have migraines 3-4 days per week lasting 8+ hours. I wonder if my scent would also trigger someone else’s service dog?)

Hi, I'm 15 and I've had "complex migraines" since I was 10, I've had a lot of tests and everything but we still don't know whats going on, I have so many random neurological symptoms that we can't figure out. I just found your channel and i feel like I'm not so weird, I've only watch 2 of your videos but I really like your videos 🖤
I stumbled upon your channel and I am hooked. I am fascinated by how in tune Buddy is to you. Amazing! You are able to be so independent as a result. I do have a few questions, though. 1. Does your husband work from home or nearby? In your prepare to faint video he came pretty fast when he didn’t hear from you. 2. What are you going to do about your health issues (migraines, fainting, heart/bp surges/drops, possible c-section with anesthesia issues) during labor? 3. How are you going to handle motherhood and being alert and able to care for baby? I am sure you have plans - and if I’m being nosy I apologize. Maybe you have addressed these and I haven’t caught up yet. You are a strong, independent woman and Buddy is fantastic!
Short on time but 1, husband and I both work from home and 2, for labor we just have to trust our team and pray for a healthy delivery! I have my husband and a doula so if Migraine Jen shows up, there will be a caretaker to advocate.
Ok so this is kind of a sad story. We went to Home depot for a fall decoration. The thing i wanted was next to a bunch of halloween decorations of "bone dogs" they scared him so badly he turned away lay down and threw up. He would not look at me at all as i was between him and a bunch of dead dogs, as far as he knew, but we moved away quickly and he was fine and happy in a minute or two. So avoid this service dog hazard. Home D was ok too.
@Nyah Burkhart thanks he is fine. he is a standard and was set to be the stud in a puppy mill making doodles and i think he may have seen dead dogs. He had a hard start but is spoiled now.

I’m new to your channel and you just popped up 🤷🏼♀️ but I am very glad you did! I have some medical conditions that are getting worse and I have decided to try and train my dog as a service dog. His natural instinct is on point but he was previously abused which as caused some issues that kinda disqualifies him as a service dog I believe. But I have no one who understands what I’m going thru or to help with self training questions or to give suggestions. I am alone in this. I would love it if I could pick your brain sometime bc I am getting to the point where it’s becoming dangerous for me....
I would love a video on how you houseproofed your dog. My girl is pretty smart but is also a complete weenie sometimes haha.

I’m so glad I stumbled upon this today. I’m having a lot of migraines that affect my ability to walk and I feel like I’m on the verge of fainting. I’ve been to the Mayo Clinic for this but as you know it is hard to figure out everything that is going on and convey it to a doctor. I will definitely be using my blood pressure cuff to see if it is going low during those attacks. Ironically I figured out salt made me feel a lot better 😁 you have been very helpful. Sorry so long.

My friends doggo is an ESA but she is absolutely on a mission if I am unconscious. If I have gone for a lie down and have sunk into adrenal crisis (aka medical emergency and I'm not going to wake up but will get increasingly poorly and go into shock etc) she will come and find me and practically break down the door to the room I'm in and then when she's convinced someone to let her in the room she will try her hardest to wake me up, and the fact that her efforts don't work is usually enough to alert another human to the problem. I also wake up from a crisis much faster if the doggo is there nudging my hand :) none of this has been trained but its happened lots of times now (due to a period where my health was very unstable so I stayed with this friend for a while). She clearly smells something but idk what!

I can totally relate. I also have a service dog that alerts for migraines. Sometimes I can't find the off button for the alerts. 😂 Mine has used my migraines to get quite a few snacks.
