Cheltenham Festival 2024 Day 4 - Highlights & Interviews

- Day four of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival saw Galopin Des Champs etch his name into sporting folklore as he recorded successive victories in Jump Racing's Blue Riband event, the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
In what was the 100th running of the race, the eight-year-old and jockey Paul Townend produced a dazzling display to provide the rider and trainer Willie Mullins with their fourth wins in the race.
Mullins ended the meeting on nine winners as he enjoyed a final day treble with Majborough (Triumph Hurdle) and Absurde (County Hurdle) also delivering for the Closutton maestro.
Townend enjoyed his best ever Festival ending with six wins, also teaming up with Absurde to complete the Ebor-County double.
Elsewhere on the card, Stellar Story landed a dramatic Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle, forming part of a double for Gordon Elliott who also landed the finale, the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle with Better Days Ahead.
The Hunters' Chase went the way of Yorkshire and the Fiona Needham-trained Sine Nomine, whilst Limerick Lace led home a 1-2 for owner JP McManus in the Mares' Chase.

Never thought i would say this but i'm glad it's over....the first 2 days where awful, from a competitive point of view. Kevin Blake showed stats of how many odds on horses since they diluted the racing to 4 days, it's shocking, compared to when it was 3 days. Look at the field sizes for the supreme, gallagher, champion chase, champion hurdle etc. And they where talking about a 5 day festival!!! Hilarious, the people who run sport in England are not running the sports for the man/woman in the street.

just look at paul jump a fence or hurdle pure class! Floats like a butterfly on him and stings like a bee at the end.
Apart from when he jumped off one a few years ago at Punchestown.
Must say Mr.Ewings perseverance was admirable.

Townsend dobt through away hundreds if RACES like Ruby in Ireland England. Townsend dont call off winners like Ruby. Townsend dont make hardly any mistakes like most others.. You'll agree with me when hes 100 Cheltenham winners. Townsend will be only jockey ever to win 5 gold cups next year on GALLOPIN DE champ Pat Taffer has 4. MCCOY 2 Ruby only 2.
Just got back from a good day at Fakenham a real old NH course affordable drinks and food, lovely countryside atmosphere, friendly faces and not being charged £130 for a day!!!!!

Sick of Willie mullins winning every race what's going on will raceing at least give him opponents 🎉
It's certainly not a great look for the sport when one trainer is allowed to practically cannibalise the competition on jump racing's biggest week of the year.

Arkles time was faster all those yrs ago...Why????
Arkle and Flyingbolt, Mill House , Le, Escargot, The Dikler were better horses!
actually des champs had the exact same time as arkle in both of their first wins in the gold cup 6:45.6 this years ground was heavy sloppy and soft its all ground dependent on the times A plus Tard did it in 6:41 only 2 years ago that was good/soft its all ground if you look outside of the times at chelt you'll see they haven't changed much also different styles different grounds will all play a factor in times since the 60s.
saying that arkle for me was the best horse ever so im not even hating arkle was special but des champs is special too just not arkle level..

Nice closing of the gap by Paul Townend to stop Gerry Colombe from racing. These young clowns continue to allow themselves to look like novices. I'm not saying Gerry Colombe would have beat Galopin des champs but Paul Townend made a fool of Jack Kennedy. Obviously Paul pushed boundaries but you ask for trouble when you're tailing a riderless horse for too long. Townend did nothing wrong. He just made a fool of a limited jockey and that's why he's on Galopin des champs and the other limited jockey loses on the other horse
Makes a big difference when your is travelling well and the other isn't

Cause of the heavy ground.
His time last year was way faster. On times only Coneygree has done better in recent times, both posted above standard on soft ground.
Heavy going compare the times with other Gold cups on heavy going only.
foxhunters winner was best winner of whole meeting
Time is irrelevant today with that ground, let's just enjoy the best GC winner since Kauto Star/Denman
