Edward Thompson’s renumbering scheme is that applied. Lovely looking model. I built several wartime black ones from the railroad model which, IMO, is actually better in a lot of ways than the super detail models.
Funnily enough, the first A10’s were renumbered towards the end of the class (the last engine numerically was Enterprise, the last of the first batch of A1, before going into Great Northern, and then the first of the Peppercorn engines)
I’ll be honest, while I did purchase a Lemberg to use for a Gordon model, the model I received was a wartime black example. Rather strange, but I’m glad your model has the full lettering. That aside, Hornby upgrading their A1 is one of the best things they’ve done. Would really like to pick up a green one like Flying Scotsman (not the RailRoad one!). Excellent video, Sam. Cheers
The somewhat boring black will never be my favourite livery for any engine type (besides maybe the Q1) but this model still looks great. great video, Sam!
Managed to snag this a while back from Hornby entirely off of reward points when they marked it down to 150. Very satisfied with the model and I loved the review! *for future reference the dome is a separately fitted piece (mine arrived rattling around the box) and the front bogie has a screw that holds on a detail piece covering the built-in nem socket
Sam; love your reviews! Please forgive my trip down memory lane; Flying Scotsman was the second loco I ever purchased with my pocket money back in the early seventies (the first was a GWR pannier). This Hornby offering seems mechanically superior and is visually stunning, would make a great stable-mate to my old Scotsman. Your videos convey your excitement and passion for your subject, along with your solid objectivity (with a sprinkle of good humour) Bravo and thank you
Pedant here - Hornby haven't added the firebox glow - they've merely reinstated it from when they first produced Flying Scotsman back in the late1960s or early 1970s.
Great video, Sam 👍. As nice as the A1s and A3s look in LNER green, the black certainly makes a nice change. It's great to see them in something other than green once in a while.
I agree with you Sam, LNER Black really does look smart on an A3. I wish Hornby would do a 'What if' version of the A1/A3 in Garter Blue as well as a pre-grouping GNR livery, those would be real lookers Also did you see Rapido's announcement? We're finally getting a new-tooled Caledonian 123! It'd look lovely hauling some Caledonian Evolution coaches I think
Hi Sam great review, As a side note both Doncaster & Lemberg were part of the first release of the upgraded a1/3s, batch 2 had more upgrades on them. Harvester had a front nem pocket, the new tender draw bar, painted crew & DCC socket which is a lot better especially for the prices they go for now.
Was tempted about one of these for quite a while. Trouble is, without a big enough layout or rolling stock, it’s a bit impractical to get too many big engines… It does look smart and that offer was *very* interesting
Hi Sam, yet another exemplary review! And a stunning looking loco! Just a small idea: the part where you give your brief history of the real world examples, you stae how many are preserved, maybe if possible it would be good if you can state where the preserved locos are? As you only occasionally include that information.
I have this one and its excellent, one of my favourite models and runs like a dream. It actually looks nice with a mixed freight load. I do prefer the black actually, green LNER locos are everywhere and its nice to see a change.
The LNER Wartime black looks really great on the A1/A3, but I think it would be better if Hornby released a weathered variant instead of it being clean. However, my favorite variant of the A3 is still the initial preservation Scotsman, in LNER Green with the red nameplate. However, i don’t think this is the most recent hornby A3. When they released the Dublo Scotsman’s, they slightly changed the scale to make it a bit smaller, which I guess is more accurate to OO. Also, they added a 21 pin decoder and I think spring loaded contacts on the baseplate, as the dublo Scotsman’s had spring loaded contacts. However, great video as always Sam! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for making a review about about yet another Gresley Pacific still interesting to watch 😂 Good to see a nice running loco from Hornby as well. Will add: 15:15 , what’s with that handrail on the cab? Missing a lover holder over covered in glue? Best
I have one of these. I think it looks wonderful - a beautiful loco in a very smart livery. Runs well too. I usually put it in front of some BR Mk1s in maroon. Completely un-prototypical of course but a pleasure to watch.
I have the same model and am very pleased with it. Hornby had reduced is to £151.79 but with Hornby point I got mine for £67.48 which is amazing. The only issue I had was the dome fell off which I glued back on.
It does look great, and I did enjoy seeing the Scottish aviator in wartime black for its brief period on show before it went back to have the frames sorted out… having said that, on some of the video the firebox looks to be a different finish or a different shade of black. Is it just the light?
Hey Sam. I've got the same model in my collection. Mine doesn't have glue marks on front buffer beam and cab fits the running plate. Though the dome isn't a part of the moulding. Mine I had to fit myself. Funny how Lemberg has the older wire tender connection and 8 pin. Yet Hermit is 21 pin and the newer tender connection, the same as the smoke generator Flying Scotsman. So there must be a cross over in the A1/A3 range
As a lad of 12 or 13, my first and only OO steam locomotive was a Triang "Princess" class pacific. This was about 60 years ago on a small 4 X 8 layout. All I remember is that it looked great flying around the track with three maroon and cream BR coaches and a royal mail coach. How detailed it was I don't remember, but your look at the A3 brought back memories. Thanks. By the way, is this your only layout or do you have another full scale model railway hidden away somewhere?
I have this exact model - it was on a New Year's sale on Hornby's site for £150, but I paid £125 since I live in America. My version is amazing, runs really well...though I am tempted to use its chassis for a great big blue engine...we shall see though! Lovely model regardless
One other thing: the dome is a separate part. I know this because when mine arrived the dome was rattling around loose in the box. It had been fitted the wrong way round - the pin holding it to the boiler is offset - and I had to make the decision whether to re-fit it back to front or to live with a nasty glue mark right on top of the boiler. I ended up fitting it back to front so that the glue mark would be covered - so now it sits slightly forward of where it should be, making my A3 very rare! You'd have to look pretty closely to notice, to be honest.
Sam, not sure if someone said this...but I think with the quality control issues with this model at full price is a bit of a cheek. On the blast pipe (left hand side) from the smoke box to the pistons there is A HAIR IN THE PAINT!
now im not the biggest fan of the "normal" express locomotives. But with that being said an older hornby A1/A3 you would enjoy if you can find it goes by the name sandwich. Shes got the double chimney in br green. But i do agree with you the wartime black is quite lovely on these
Overall I do like this model, though the hard wired base, lack of flywheel, and eight pin socket is weird. While that ROP is delusional, I am completely ok with companies properly updating tooling rather than having to start from scratch, especially if it means seeing certain models re-released. While that firebox flicker looks good, I don't know why there's such variance in how noticeable that feature is with Hornby. It's not a big deal admittedly but I've got four Hornby locos with firebox flicker. On three of my models, you can barely tell the feature exists. On the fourth model, the firebox doors are a portal straight to the sun. Just some middle ground is all i'm asking for. Great review as usual! Would have actually been nice to see this Black A3 running a fast freight service!
Not really sure why anyone would loathe this, it’s wartime black which obviously was used in wartime because back then they needed it to be difficult to be seen from above, really like that this model has the GN tender, I have 1 A3 myself with that tender that I’m currently using for a project.
I wonder why Hornby only emphasises the upgrades to the A1/A3’s (it always gets mentioned in the product listings), because they have upgraded other engines in their range. I got an A4 recently, “empire of India”, and that now has a flickering firebox, push together tender connection, and even crew to fit to the model. That’s quite the change! Would you be able to send me a link to the file? I found the one for the Dean Goods, B12, and Bachmann locos but I’m guessing those won’t work in the H Class

What's the correct name of this loco? The box spells "LEMBERG" with a "G" (minute 4:03), the mainplate on the loco itself spells "LEMBERC" with a "C" (minute 10:45)...? Only one can be correct.
This Loco has been a thorn in my side, I’ve wanted an A1/A3 with a GNR tender for some time, but the only one my model shop has in stock at a reasonable price is this black example not the Apple green I’m after, it’s a nice engine but the black does suck some of the soul out of the engine
Hi Steve 😎👍, I prefer olstime steamers and diesel switcher engines because I really enjoy freight cars and I grew up very close to a railroad in Portland and I have been trying to get my layout to resemble the trains that I grew up with in the 70's to the present ❤️😎👍
I really liked seeing the full-size "Sir Nigel Gresley" in wartime black and was saddened when it was returned to BR Express Blue, but I respect the choice of its preservation society members. To me it was a missed opportunity.
personal i always wanted a flying scotmans in wartime black so i can add one to my colections of flying scotsman special if hornby would make it in new toolings
Ah how ironic. I was working on my Pennsy K4s Pacific express passenger locomotive that took over duty from the earlier Pennsy E6 Atlantic when this video popped up in my feed
Did you see the second batch of Evolution coaches Rapido announced yesterday? I'm rather disappointed with the Metropolitan/London Transport ones as they don't seem to have doors with curved tops. That is a distinctive feature of subsurface coaches to allow the doors to open within the restricted London Underground loading gauge. I want some coaches to go with my Heljan Bo-bo, not so sure about the Rapido offerings now.

May I ask how you find them to be better? Genuine question here, not being derisive at all.
Actually I think the 2 figure renumbering is from Thompson, hence the A4's started at 1 - 34.
Yes, that was indeed Thompson's idea
Funnily enough, the first A10’s were renumbered towards the end of the class (the last engine numerically was Enterprise, the last of the first batch of A1, before going into Great Northern, and then the first of the Peppercorn engines)
And BR added 60000 to those Thompson numbers to get their Eastern region numbering system

Instead it's called "Breaking Records" 😂

I kind of like the LNER Black livery on the A3, something different from the green's and blue's that it wore over the years.
Amazing video sam
I wish more manufacturers would release models in all black and grey so that it's easier to paint a specific or original livery

Mine came last week. Lovely SE&CR livery. Shame about the huge box. Rapidly running out of shelf space.

😮So Chuffed, with my Stirling single, it arrived today. Hope Rapido make more full metal engines.
This A3 is quite smart.
Just spent a pleasant afternoon at Rails with the team from Rapido. Watching the engineering sample of Ivor the Engine trundling round.
