- I do not own this clip! This is from a segment of the Designing Women Reunion at the Paley Center for Media. I feel everyone should see this clip as it tackles the subject of gay marriage among true classy southern women!
Loved this show! Saddens me that Miss Dixie (and Meshach Taylor and Alice Ghostley & Jan Hooks) are no longer with us.

I was Dixie Carter's bellman when she was in Minneapolis. ( I do not recall the year) She was Very down to earth and completely Charming. And a good tipper as I recall. Such a classy lady and talented with acting and singing!
Thank you Dixie for ALL of the wonderful memories. We have all truly been blessed!!
In the 70's,80's and 90's we had entertainment...now we just have garbage reality TV...thank God for premium channels.
Although Dixie Carter was a Republican and you are correct in that she had differing views than her character, she was in fact a strong supporter of the gay community and human rights.

I remember at Hoedowns in Atlanta, when it was still open, they would play the clip from Designing Women and then segue into Reba McIntyre's cover of the song.

Designing Women is one of those shows that has made history Dixie Carter like the remaining cast members were wonderful. Linda Bloodsworth Thompson is one hell of a writer and I applaud her for being such a pioneer in the 1980's. I think of how far we have come since the original airing of this show and where we are today people like Linda and this cast played a huge role in the way things are today. They brought these powerful messages into the homes of people who may have had a different point of view after seeing the show. I did not know that Dixie had passed until today a weird feeling has come over me as if I have lost a family member. I had said before that the character Julia was my real life mama because that character was my mama through and through the way she spoke and carried herself. I hope that they have met in heaven I am certain they are have a wonderful time together. Rest In Peace sweet mama and Rest In Peace sweet Dixie. You both made a difference in the lives of other's you came into contact down here.
They still play that speech in bars all over the country before Reba's song comes on

Update for 2022! There’s a bar in Dallas called “Roundup” and they are still playing that scene before the song and you WILL hear a bunch of dudes quoting that scene WORD FOR WORD! Including me lol
I can only Imagine the speech Julia would have given to Trump becoming our President!
That would have been interesting, considering Dixie was, in real life, a registered Republican & not crazy about some of the speeches she was given as Julia. Of course, we know now that Dixie eventually agreed to do those speeches in exchange for being allowed to sing in a future episode.
However, something tells me Dixie would have despised Trump as president, even though he was referred to in the famous "magazine shoot" episode by Julia as one of the people the photographer should take pictures of in revealing poses before coming to them again. Then again, it was the '80s & Trump was still primarily a businessman. I am sure any show that made jokes about him or even had him on their show are now regretting they ever did so.

I doubt she was against that speech (especially as the show was one of the first to even address the disease, let alone treat it with dignity) & given the kind of pride she shows in how the show is an inspiration to the gay community in this clip, I am sure that never changed.
I just remember reading that some of the speeches in the show that were more the product of Linda Bloodworth-Thomason's own views (remember, she & her husband were/are good friends of the Clintons) Dixie herself did not align with personally & those were just great acting. In exchange for them, the moments where Julia sang a song in a later episode (perhaps even the famous "How Great Thou Art" performance) were a part of the compromise Dixie struck with them.
Dixie was pro gay
Andy Mann , she would have ripped a new one and continue to do so! There would be no more massacres, no hate and people would go back to natural colour and hair would be short! Bring back Julia.....Kia Ora from the South Pacific!
DEsigning women has the same dynamic as Golden Girls but GG was more popular because it has one-liners and this show had more depth and more blatant political themes.
The chemistry on GG was somewhat stronger between the actors and it was a far more stable cast. Plus I think DW took itself too seriously sometimes. GG covered serious topics but kept it very light and escapist.
I always loved the homage that Will and Grace gave to this show. The LGBT community knows its allies. I loved this show- in my heart always.
OMG, thanks to the uploader for this! These ladies have made this gay man both laugh and cry for over 25 years now. As much as I love "The Golden Girls," "DW" has an edge over them for me, because in almost every episode, there's a moral or life lesson behind the uproarious humor. Sometimes I'm laughing AND crying at the same time. They're still on every weekday on the TV Guide Network, and may they never go away! God rest the soul of beloved Dixie Carter, and God bless Delta, Jean, and Annie.

Reference to: "Dixie has Powerful Control of words..." (She ARTICULATES well) It is a speech reference indicating and requiring that the ENTIRE WORD be Pronounced -
Lazy mouths - do not articulate well - requires conscious thought to develop the habit, normally, and the listener clearly is conscious that the speaker has class and a respect for language.
Great stage actress - excellent Voice and Diction skills.
That is not what she meant at all. If you listened to the follow up comment, she was discussing how Julia was able to confront people and that she, the interviewer, didn't have that ability or power to stand up to people.
She wasn't discussing the logistics of how she spoke, but more about what she was able to convey with power and conviction.

I believe Dixie moved to New York in her early 20s and living in New York probably neutralized her Tennessee accent. Her first big role was a non-southern character, Assistant DA Brandy Henderson on "The Edge of Night", so she can probably turn the accent on and off as she needs to.

some fantastic shows came out in the 80's....the golden girls and designing women helped push gays to the forefront of society----using topics that were hot and opinions/views that were SPOT ON......our lives are so much better because of these people....I WILL ALWAYS LOVE THEM AND REMEMBER THEM.....
I wish I could find all of this! I was 9 when this show started & a fan from day 1, to the end! We've lost so many of them now. Dixie Carter, Alice Ghostley, Meshach Taylor & Jan Hooks. May u all RIP & have a wonderful reunion in heaven!! I love u all! 😊💟

Even 6 years after Dixie's death, I am grieving like no other. I have this strange connection with her somehow. I can't wait until we meet in heaven.

Fallible men wrote the bible in accordance to the laws and mores of the day and directives of those in power. It has been translated over 600 times so exactly how can you be sure it's accurate? You can't. Not that it matters because it's a bunch of manure. Per the bible, god had all kinds of people killed. A merciful god? He needed to be cruel and kill his son so people could live forever? Truly out there. God killed many babies in the bible and then decided everyone HE CREATED was wicked and flooded the earth and killed them. The god of the bible is evil. No thanks. Wake up. Religion is a farce. All religions are man-made.

Just discovered this gem 💎! Designing Women continues to be my all time favorite sit com. Fabulous cast, great stories and never afraid to address SIGNIFICANT issues. Fondly recall Julia's call to Trump! Also Killing All the RIGHT people 👏. Now that human rights are once again on the line This fantastic show is even more relevant! RIP, Dixie, Love you Susanne (and your big old Cadillac). Charlene still HACKS me up 😂. And MEMAW and your Cadillac keep me feeling YOUNG (but not Sheldon!) LOL and 💋 to this great classy and classic show!💪 🏳️🌈 💪
I loved this show, where 4 strong women, could fight for what they believe in and still be classy. But got taken off for show's like Bridezilla... Thank you so much lifetime!
I forgot plum what the name of the spin off was. I hope you got my post on your channel. I wasn't as specific either; like I was thinking it but didn't write it down. I noticed your 21; it's like discovering a new show for you b/c you weren't born until 90 or 91? I was born in '71, haha I'm ancient in ur eyes:-) . You know I didn't even know these shows had a gay following? I'm just naive, I guess. I wished they made shows like this today. I never get tired of these shows they are just classic!

I'm not gay (and anyone who knows me knows I would be outspoken about it if I that was the case simply to piss fundamentalists off), but I watched the whole series (as well as the Golden Girls) when I was a young boy. I know Dixie Carter was conservative (at least what a conservative was at that time), but I find Julia Sugarbaker sexy because I have known too many women who don't speak up regarding their private convictions, but with Julia, she doesn't suffer fools, and I admire that.

Yes, they'd made up by this airing, which was in 2006. Dixie didn't pass until 2010. I'm glad they had the chance to reconcile. They were dear friends.

Yes I know. I thought you were saying Bea Arthur left Golden Girls and the show continued as Golden Girls, which it did not. That was my bad.
Bea Arthur never left The Golden Girls. The Golden Girls ended with Dorthy getting married and then they had a spin-off with Rose, Blanche and Sophia where they ran a hotel called The Golden Palace

I grew up watching Designing Women.
Yeah I got it:). Yeah i have done the same thing before. Yeah, I was born in 91 and only if I could figure out and find the way to stop aging this year I would be 21 forever and the richest man to ever live haha. I have watched this show and The Golden Girls for as long as I ca remember. My mom watched them all the time so I did. My mom was born in 71. Yeah The Golden Girls and Designing Women both have a huge gay following.

The Golden Girls ended with this plot BECAUSE Bea Arthur decided to leave the show and then they started the spin off of them running a hotel and it flopped b/c once one person is gone from a perfect chemistry it just doesn't work, except Fraiser, I was really surprised how good it was when it came out and that's normally rare!
If I remember right, Bea had announced that season 7 would be her last & the writers/producers had planned to wrap the show up with that in mind. Kind of a "if one person leaves, we all do" thing. Of course, they tried to make a go of it with the remaining 3, but they saw how wrong they were.
7 seasons seem to be a magic number for shows as many great ones ended there (DW included), while others would appear to have peaked around then & the quality starts to slowly drop off. It is often nice to wonder what might have happened had the show kept going, but sometimes it is best that it ended when it did.

Y'all can order the shows through Amazon! That's what I did and I just love them but only the ones with Delta Burke after that the show lost it's ummph! Once you take out one of a good show it's just not the same chemistry anymore! same with golden girls! Once Bea Arthur left it wasn't the same either. Have to have all to make it right and when one is gone not the same.

Delta aged the best out of all of them. She looks exactly the same 20 years later.
A TRUE testament to Dixie Carter’s acting skills.. Dixie was an old school conservative in real life however Julia Sugarbaker was very liberal. When Dixie would give one of Julia’s fiery, liberal speeches it seemed SO real & SO genuine because she spoke with such passion. Fun Fact: Since Dixie didn’t personally agree with her characters views (all the time) she had a deal with Linda Bloodworth Thompson. For every fiery, democratic speech Dixie gave as Julia, writers would work a singing performance into a future episode because Ms. Carter loved to sing. Who can forget her performance on the show of “How Great Thou Art”? Chills!
Specifically every speech she didn't agree with. Some she agreed with.
@cadevereaux - It's not your idea of chivalry that is in question, sir... most men are indeed lacking in that category. It is your idea of morality that leaves room for concern. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that you believe good morals come from the Christian Holy Bible as you interpret it. It is impossible, in practice, to obey the Bible as if it were a list of commandments without contradiction. Bible Scholars will tell you there's no clear Biblical justification there.

Didn't Linda had something with Delta Burke because she was gaining weight. I think that is why she left...
Yeah but they reconciled a couple of years after that and Delta even went on to star in Linda's short lived series after Designing Women called "Women of the House" - Delta reprised her role as Suzanne Sugarbaker in it - the other women in it were all new characters.
I've never heard weight gain was a problem. Wasn't Linda gaining weight at this time too?

The cruise ship episode, Susanne's lesbian friend, the episode where they bowl to compete for a job both sides lose to a gay couple ...

@@julie4evert490 obviously but golden girls tried. NBC dropped the cook after the pilot. The show's creator Susan Harris also created soap that did have a gay main character.

Besides what does it matter if people do or don’t support gay marriage. gay people stop caring whether your marriage is supported by outsiders..it shouldn’t matter what anyone else thinks. If it’s right good and righteous ; it will be that. If it’s not ; then that’s what it will be wrong and not good…..Truth right and righteousness will STAND and PREVAIL.. no matter who tries to change it or stop it..

I grew up on this show. My mom was a "belle" and she watched this show every week. Brings back a lot of memories. It's interesting how Dixie sounds less southern than her character Julia. The accent doesn't seem as strong.
