The lead singer said in an interview that God gave him the arrangement for this song in a dream. Given the unearthly beauty of the vocals, I believe him
Tommy Hunt said they sang this song because the producer wanted them to do this. Dick Powell wrote and sung this song in the 30s. I grew up on DoWop. 😅😅😅
Harri I’m so glad you played this one! I cried all the way through it. This was the song we played at our wedding for our first dance. Seventy years old and still dancing!!!💕
I was an 18 year teenager when this song came out. It has always been at the top of my list of favorite songs . Another Flamengos song is Lovers never say goodbye. Brings back a lot of memories. Thank you.
Nate Nelson on lead vocal here. Spring of '59, I was in 7th grade, 12 y/o. This is what is called real singing. and, for my generation , this was THE slow-dance song we used for " special " moments-----MJL, 76 y/o
Oh my!!! I have loved this song forever. Harri, Have you ever heard anything so beautiful? The lead singer's voice and the backup singers vocals so enchanting. I could listen to this over and over. Thanks Harri. Glad you loved it. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Mary Baillie, Enchanting is a beautiful description of this song!! Wonderful song!! The Flamingos also have many other great songs: Your Other Love, Lovers Never Say Goodbye, Mio Amore, and Love Walked In, to name a few.
@@user-jn6bi7mn4m A time in music that will never happen again. I'm 70 and consider myself to have been so lucky to have lived in this era of some of the most beautiful music ever produced. You never hear this type of orchestral backing anymore with an amazing vocal group that transports you to another dimension. Enchanting indeed. 😊👍✌️🇨🇦
A lot of great songs come from the DooWop era. This one has always been one of my favorites. Another group you'd like from that era is Little Anthony & The Imperials. Lots of great songs!! My favorite is Tears On My Pillow..
Originally written for the film Dames (1934), with many recorded versions. This particular version went to #11 on Billboard in 1959. Accolated, definitely ICONIC, TIMELESS and LIFEGIVING!
The Flamengos, the Ink Spots (I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire, If I Didn't Care), Mills Brothers (Til Then, Paper Doll), a number of great groups like them from the mid-'50's-early '60's. Beautiful harmonies.
OMG, one of the all time greats of early rock n' roll. Never get tired of hearing them. Doo Wop was the best and there are a few of the old groups with new members still doing live shows. The Flamingos are still performing and have been inducted in the Rock and Roll hall of fame.
The Flamingos just make you melt, this song is so beautiful & all of the baby boomers & earlier all know what this song 🎵 does 💕 it is a slow dancing song that you hope never ends 👏💎💜🦩
"Sh-bop, sh-bop" Sweet! That piano and that guitar with the slight reverb and the sh-bop sh-bops give this song a mystery feeling that persists to this day. Credit The Flamingos with adding those parts to the song, which was written twenty five years before they made the song theirs in 1959. PS. The "most played on the radio" line might be specific to the US. For more sh-bop sh-bops in a similar style, check out Barbara Lewis "Hello Stranger" from 1961.
I'm so glad you got to this one Harri! This is my favorite romantic song of all time! I'm from Los Angeles, and this song always takes me back to a (idealized) warm summer night walking barefoot on the beach with my "special" girl, even after all these years. So romantic!!
The Flamingos were one of the early 50's doo-wop groups. They were known for their great harmonies & choreography moves. They influenced other acts such as The Temptations later on. "I Only Have Eyes For You" is their biggest hit but they had quite a few good songs "If I Can't Have You", "That's My Desire", "Golden Teardrops", "I'll Be Home", "Lovers Never Say Goodbye" etc.
One of the greatest tracks of all-time, and one of the few I never get bored of; it gradually creeps up my list of favourite songs every year. The Flamingos' manager suggested they cover this song (which was an "oldie" even in 1959!) because he was convinced that rock & roll was a short-lived fad, and the band should concentrate on middle-of-the-road old songs... 🤣
I can't count the number of movies that have used this song in them. This is just the A-typical 1950s early "Doo-wop music. It's just wonderful. You and your lady in your car at your "Special place." The ambience this songs gives off, is amazing.
Such an amazing recording full of intimacy, mysterious coloring and yes. So smooth. Doo Wop at it's best. Music to this song composed by Harry Warren (aka Salvator Guaragna) who also composed At Last and many, many more hits. The Flamingos were out of Chicago. Thanks for delving into doo wop. Next try The Skyliners This I Swear.
Great one, Harri. I love this song so much. I like how the musical production is stripped down as well so we can focus on their heavenly voices. Thanks for sharing.
Got to dance with your honey bunny to get the full effect of these beautiful love songs. Thanks for sharing! I love this song. Takes me back to beautiful memories!
This was recently used for a tv commercial.....lol I have no idea what the product was but it featured and elderly couple slow dancing to it with flashbacks to their youth.....I got lost in the song and have no idea what they were advertising. This stands the test of time.....I was a small girl when this came out....loved it then and love it now. Mesmerizing.
Bravo my friend, you have gone all the way back to 1959 ,coming to the end of the Doo Wop era. This group had such an influence on the r&b/soul groups of the 60s.Otis Williams of the Temptations said in an interview that the Flamingos and The Drifters were two of the old groups which inspired them.I think that goes without saying, their vocal group harmony is so pure. The lead voice I believe is that of Nate Nelson, what a tenor so pure and soothing. This is a classic example of the perfect voice to sing lead.Since you are on the Flamingos you must do reaction videos to Lovers Never Part and I'll Be Home.Do this ASAP ,you will not be disappointed.Well done.
What are you talking about a shame to call this Doowoop music. We black folks invented Doowoop music which never enough airplay. That's why I do the Doowoop Hour on internet radio. Did you forget that white radio stations below the Mason Dixon Line would not touch a black record in this racist white supermists country where have you been man. Me The Masterblaster is one of the few who are keeping our black music alive in this racist white supermists country.
@@darrylevans4401 Are you done soiling yourself? The Flamingos were a Doo Wop group from Chicago, no matter how much of a childish incoherent rant you decide to scream. My point is that this song transcended a genre, in much the same way The Platters version of Jerome Kern's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (written the same year as the original version of "I only Have Eyes For You").. But again, continue to scream, stamp your feet, and throw your toys in the air.
At least Beck has done a cover on this song. While checking that out, I learned that this is actually a cover version too, original being from 1934 by Dick Powell in a musical Dame. Skyliners - "Since I Don't Have You" would be nice one around the same era. :)
I used to go to a 80's club that at last call always played this tune and "Put Your head on my Shoulder" by Paul Anka. All the nightly hookups were all aglow.
These are the legends of rock and roll they are the ones who broke ground for the music we have today. Love this song my wife and I dance to this every time we hear it, and we have been together for 38 years and a wonderful song for two people deeply in love. Gives you a feeling that's deep in your soul for the one you love
I suck at singing, BUT THIS ONE OF MY “GO-TO’s” AROUND THE HOUSE! (No doubt to my family’s chagrin; sometimes I’ll just do the backing vocals 😆) One of the *BEST TUNES EVER!* 😃
Oh my!!!! This just takes you away. My dad introduced me to the 50's music when I was little. Somehow this song and just about anything from the Platters were at the top of my list of faves. Dad and I danced to this song at my wedding. It is a treasured memory as he passed in 2020. My husband and I dance to this anytime it pops up. Thank you Jay and Amber for reacting to this gem!
I waited and waited for this to come on the AM clock-radio at night. Hauntingly sweet. Had it turned low so Mom wouldn' holler, "School Tomorrow, Good Night!"
My father loved this song, he was a good singer who could switch easily between baritone and tenor. But his love for the song went back to its inception in 1934 from the movie "Dames", with Dick Powell singing this to Ruby Keeler while on the ferry. Al Dubin's lyrics are timeless and Harry Warren's melody is so enthralling. My father actually sang this around the house in the early '50s. I will add that this arrangement is probably one of my all-time favorites, due to its dreamy nature. I hope some young folks will learn how deep the talent pool is, and if you have a gift, use it.
You have to pull up the 50s group The Mills Brothers.Awsome. Also Johnny Mathis The 12th of Never. One of my wedding songs along with Pat Boone April Love.
A very popular cover originally sung by Dick Powell from the 1934 movie "Dames". The Flamingos had a chart topper in 1959 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2001.
Music from outer space. The first time I heard this was in the car in the backseat with my parents driving in the middle of the night at a country intersection, lit only by a Chevron gas station neon sign. It all came together and I was mesmerized. I was only three or four years old.
There were so many groups that we listened to during the era of the best music ever, and The Flamingos were the one of the very few that were the best.
