That Rayleigh line "It might not be a bad thing to live a little longer" is especially hard hitting when you realize it's implied Rayleigh tried to commit suicide by drowning/starving out at sea. We're told Hachi met Rayleigh by saving him at sea. But even as an old man, Rayleigh can swim through the Calm Belt like it's nothing. He would've been much younger when he met Hachi. As such, Hachi "saving" him is likely much more about Hachi convincing Rayleigh to keep living, rather than actually saving him from danger.
LoL as intriguing as it sounds, it's not possible. Oda hates the idea of suicide as we've seen so many times Luffy hating people who let go of their lives so easily.
Speaking of Ace, the worst thing is that when Yamato told him that Oden had known a great man who'd said the same words as Luffy, Ace said he'd like to have a drink with him...
Roger is likely the most important character in the story. He’s the great catalyst, he beat the game before the game was supposed to even begin, he’s the legend of the series.
My headcanom/theory/personal belief as to why Shanks never mentioned his apprenticeship on Roger’s crew is because that would just make Luffy want to join HIS crew even more, something we clearly see him not wanting for Luffy.
Mind you he also as far as we are aware DID NOT know what the rest of the Roger Pirates did about the One Piece, that they arrived too early and that the world is waiting for someone. What Shanks did know was that this boy was alot like his former captain. Too much perhaps for Shanks to be ok with being near at such a young age. Its entirely possible Shanks knows Luffy's real dream, which is something he may have heard Roger speak about (only Yamato is the only confirmed person to sorta connect the dots on this one). So between the similarities between his captain and their shared dream, Shanks would be one to hedge one hell of a bet on Luffy. And if Shanks knows what say Rayleigh knows, Shanks is actually counting on Luffy to do the impossible.
@@thomasallen9974 Considering how much of Roger Shanks was potentially seeing in Luffy, it adds a weight to Shanks telling him to become a great pirate and meet him again. From Luffy's perspective it's "become a great pirate" but from Shank's it starts to read as "You remind me of him, hopefully you'll grow to be like him too"
Honestly with how the Marines acted, Roger laughing at hearing he was the pirate king could also be interpreted as something besides the misspell of his name. To him, being a pirate was to have freedom, and to be crowned the king by the very people hunting him down basically meant that he had finally attained true freedom.
When you brought up Roger's last word to Rayleigh, it just made me think about Hiruluk's speech about how a man only dies when he's forgotten. Gah DAYUM, I love this story so much!
I believe one of the hidden themes in one piece is that the government classifies every one who seeks to travel and explore the world as pirates. People cannot discern good pirates from bad ones. The term pirate takes different meaning for every character and can change its meaning as the morality of the individual changes.
That's so true! Pedro had actually said that he and his crew started off Zou to explore the world but the World Government dubbed them as pirates. Something similar probably happened to Mihawk too. I bet he was just sailing around fighting strong opponents and because he didn't follow exactly the society's rules, the government dubbed him as a pirate too (Even though this is more my assumption than actual knowledge 😅)
@@A.S._Trunks Yes, but my guess is that it may have been an accident, just like Zoro's "pirate hunter" thing; it's not like he was specifically hunting down pirates (at least from what we know).
This was never stated. Dont forget that Luffy was classfied as pirate because of Nezumi, the corrupt marine that was piss off by Luffy for beating Arlong and thus screwing his source of corrupt money. Take for example professor Clover. He freely explored the world in search or poneglyphs and was arrested ten times for that crime, but not for piracy, because he did not sail with a pirate flag nor even called himself a pirate. But both Luffy and Roger used or uses a pirate flag (so they are the ones causing problems to themselves, not the world goverment). The real problem here is another. Since the world goverment controls Mary Geoise, they control the safest and easiest way to travel the world, thus ships needs permission of Mary Geoise to traverse the seas (like Noland in the past). But you will only got this permission if you are a important member of a allied nation (like Noland was), if you work for the goverment directly, or if you have money. Since pirates cannot enter there, they defie this rule by entering trough the dangerous passages, but is not a crime to traverse reverse mountain or fishman island. The only two crimes that the goverment fights is Poneglyph research and Piracy (carrying a pirate flag is enough), not traversing the seas. So why was Roger a criminal even if he did not go around screwing random people? Because he sailed with a pirate flag.
@@evelynarhondi6375the nation of Zou was not allied to the world goverment. Hands down can't get enough of this One Piece content. Thank you for giving me a deeper understanding and appreciation of this amazing story. Truly feels like each video is a Ted Talk or Lecture by my professors. Every upload is a gem.
The main reason why I like your one piece breakdowns is cuz you put into words things I’ve probably already knew from reading but never really processed cuz I’m too focused on the fights. Great video!!
Roger is like BigFoot. Nobody has seen him and there’s a billion rumors about him. He has become a legend, and inspired people to go out into the world and explore. Bigfoot has also inspired people to explore. People enter the forest to find BigFoot, and enter the sea to find One Piece.
What I love about the fact that roger said he wasn’t going to die is that Hiriluk was just like roger in the belief that a man dies when he’s forgotten
Eu acabei de conhecer o seu canal, passei a manhã toda vendo os seus últimos 5 vídeos de one piece, e pra minha surpresa você acabou de lançar outro hj mesmo. Fez o meu dia ❤
Fun idea for a video I’d love to see would be about the build up to Robin proclaiming she wants to live and Luffy ordering “Shoot the flag” your Robin video is fantastic so I think it’d be awesome to show how important flags/Jolly Roger’s are up to that point and the weight behind the order! 🔥 love the videos!
I'll say this, as much as a true blue bro as Roger was, let's not forget he definitely wasn't always kind to other pirates the way he was with Whitebeared. Just remember why Squalla was so easy for Akainu to sway after Ace's dad was revealed to be Roger. Squalla hated Roger for destroying his crew and leaving him behind, and the thought that Whitebeared might be willing to sacrifice his other, 'kids' to save the son of the man who ruined him
Ain’t nobody gonna claim that Roger was a saint. That much is true. He was pretty volatile when it came to protecting his people and getting retribution. I can imagine that there were no small number of both pirates and soldiers that wound up like Squard in the world.
Another incredible video. You said mostly things that are known by the more dedicated OP fans, but you articulated it perfectly and helped enhance how Roger can be viewed.
13:00 Wonderful line. If that is indeed the case and Oda confirms it ,it would be perhaps one of the coolest twists in One Piece lore ever. Roger was just a free bird and no one can truly be free in this world so he was used as an example for all pirates.
Love your videos. It's insanely difficult to meet people irl who can read a manga and appreciate it for the strength of the writing and further still be able to articulate the points of why and how it works. I'm thinking these thoughts like you're discussing in the video all the time at my ultra-lame job, so it's lovely to see someone putting what are largely my thoughts into well-edited, well-scripted, and professional-level videos here on this platform. You open the eyes of a lot of people into understanding the deeper value of art and I want you to know that you're doing the world a service by doing so. I can't imagine the life I would have had, if I had never begun reading One Piece. It really gives me hope. It literally helped me when I was depressed for two years. Now that we live in a world of growing madness, the characters of One Piece teach me that I can reach my dream, and then someone will inherit this dream from me. I also have a couple of repeated quotes that help me with anxiety attacks and they are: "I'll tell you what freedom is to me... No fear” by Nina Simone and "Fear is the mind-killer" fron "Dune". They really are similar with One Piece phylosofy.
Your videos are absolutely amazing and this one was so worth watching just to see the words 'trophy wife' and 'smash piece' next to Rayleigh. I didn't even realize this, and I am very grateful for this knowledge.
I love your vids MelonTee! I rewatch most (especially One Piece ones) of them while doing other things, as I adore your takes. May I humbly ask for a Brook video soon?
Buggy was pretty evil. Considering he terrorized a random village and destroyed a good amount of it with his balls, I wouldn’t say he was a good guy. The only reason he seems to be relatively tame with Luffy in Impel Down is probably because there are so many strong people around who he knows could easily kill him (and those people eventually join his crew). If he accidentally threatens the wrong guy, he’s straight up dead.
I'm from the Future. He had Brooks fruit. The distance between Bon Clay and Bartolemeo introduction chapter leads to the convo between Roger and Whitebeard. He said "I'm not gonna die, partner". It was a foreshadowing to him having Brooks inactive fruit.

What I love about the fact that roger said he wasn’t going to die is that Hiriluk was just like roger in the belief that a man dies when he’s forgotten
babe, wake up, new MelonTeee video dropped!
Eu acabei de conhecer o seu canal, passei a manhã toda vendo os seus últimos 5 vídeos de one piece, e pra minha surpresa você acabou de lançar outro hj mesmo. Fez o meu dia ❤
Tbm
Fun idea for a video I’d love to see would be about the build up to Robin proclaiming she wants to live and Luffy ordering “Shoot the flag” your Robin video is fantastic so I think it’d be awesome to show how important flags/Jolly Roger’s are up to that point and the weight behind the order! 🔥 love the videos!
the amazing design detail is, he truly does look as grown up ace with a mustache and no freckles. like a mirror to a place were ace got to live
"With the extraordinary treasure that sat there before our eyes, ...at that moment Roger was ...laughing. So were we. We laughed so hard we cried!"
So when do we get the Red-haired "I've come to promote my daughter's film" Shanks deep dive?
Crocus: "You only get to live for a year Roger . . . "
Gold D "Badass Dawg" Roger: 😂
Gol D*
Roger has that gold d.
It's Gol. D. Roger
“If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” - Obi-Wan Kenobi
This quote really hits home the points in your video.
A man only truly dies when he is forgotten - Dr hiluluk
Roger is a certified legend - I love how he is written in the series and used as a hook for the readers and characters themselves
Another incredible video. You said mostly things that are known by the more dedicated OP fans, but you articulated it perfectly and helped enhance how Roger can be viewed.
New fan here, LOVE your One Piece videos!!! Makes my eyes teary every time. Please keep up the great work!
13:00
Wonderful line.
If that is indeed the case and Oda confirms it ,it would be perhaps one of the coolest twists in One Piece lore ever.
Roger was just a free bird and no one can truly be free in this world so he was used as an example for all pirates.
"Wealth, Fame and Power" - the design is very celestial dragon
Love your videos. It's insanely difficult to meet people irl who can read a manga and appreciate it for the strength of the writing and further still be able to articulate the points of why and how it works. I'm thinking these thoughts like you're discussing in the video all the time at my ultra-lame job, so it's lovely to see someone putting what are largely my thoughts into well-edited, well-scripted, and professional-level videos here on this platform.
You open the eyes of a lot of people into understanding the deeper value of art and I want you to know that you're doing the world a service by doing so. Keep up the good work, and you are one of the seldom few who I place high priority on watching your videos when they drop. No pressure, though. :)
You keep on being yourself and have a good day.
I got to admit. No fictional character has ever lived up to the hype as much as Roger did for me. He was just so wholesome. Another wonderful video. Thank you❤
Nother one piece essay. Man you're feeding us well😂
Another banger of a video essay. Keep cranking these out. I'll be here for every one. Love your stuff!
Absolutely loved the video
Hi Melontee! I really enjoyed this video so much! I wanted to know if you can discuss Jimbei, not only as a character study, but also talk about the concept of slavery that Fishman Island represented through it's story. That would be AWESOME 😎
4:05 - 4:06 Still hurts me see Sabo and Luffy devastated.🥺😭😭
The videos are getting better and better, you are now my favorite One Piece tuber. Thanks for all the work
Edward Newgate also met him, along with Monkey D. Garp and Sengoku. All respected him for his power, especially Garp and Newgate
I really like kid I hope he has a good future, can’t wait to see more of him
His departure kinda confirmed he is just mid 🤭
bro these videos are put together so well i love all these videos keep up the good work
This made me realize that Roger called Rayleigh partner, the same way Kid and Killer call each other *lies on the floor and cries uncontrollably*
3 videos in and I'm already in love
I like how he says "it's One Piece time!" And then one piece'd all over the grand line
Ok, no bullshit here, but I found your channel relatively recently and I gotta say - these are quite possibly the BEST One Piece analysis videos I’ve seen online to date. Just phenomenal job all around. Looking forward to more from you!
The scripts of your videos are unbelievibly good. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for consistently reminding me with each upload how peak one piece storytelling is. Keep up the good work!
17:02 lmao I love how random this sounds out of context
I didn’t even watch it but I know it’s a BANGER🙏🏿appreciate ya
your video essays are so comforting but hyperemotional for me, like i watched this vid 2-3 times and allways cried when silvers raylaigh spoke😢❤the best old man in one piece
I will never get a good nights rest knowing Ace died thinking his father was a bad person, I really cannot believe that marine propaganda ran that deep. Also how Ace told Luffy he would never die, and just like Roger, he didn't because Luffy carries his will also... insane...
this is a fantastic video! such a lovely ending
Melon I just wanna say I love that your last 16 videos have been One Piece videos, it's like you've been holding back so much on talking about this series but now that the floodgates are open it's all you wanna talk about
i'm loving all these frequent uploads recently you're one of my fav one piece youtubers
That pre-ending sum up was so beautiful
I can't imagine the life I would have had, if I had never begun reading One Piece. It really gives me hope. It literally helped me when I was depressed for two years. Now that we live in a world of growing madness, the characters of One Piece teach me that I can reach my dream, and then someone will inherit this dream from me. I also have a couple of repeated quotes that help me with anxiety attacks and they are: "I'll tell you what freedom is to me... No fear” by Nina Simone and "Fear is the mind-killer" fron "Dune". They really are similar with One Piece phylosofy.
Oh my? Bye bye my research draft it’s a new melonteee video!!!
Gol D. Roger. The pirate that Lived, Loved and Laughed
Great video as always. The Oden flashback with Roger really gets to your soul.
It’s time to wake up law body pillow there’s a new melonteee video!!!
I view Rayleigh as more akin to a parallel. He's to Roger what Zoro is to Luffy.
Finally, a new Melon Tree video. Now I can be happy again for half an hour
May I humbly ask for a Brook video soon?
thank you for another amazing video MelonTeee!
I've been watching One Piece for years. Your videos are so insightful and offer character analysis that I never thought of :) Thank you
Love the analysis!
I have this sneaking suspicion that MelonTree REALLY likes Rayleigh
Gold Roger was the himbo that broke the mold and let the other himbos of the world be free.
Yours is my favorite one piece content on UA-cam! So thoughtful and retrospective. Keep it up!
The edit with rogers line, especially the one where it fades into robin , was so juicy I cant get over how smooth that was
your editing is so fun, man!
The one piece world is only fun when you are a crackhead that just wants to fight and eat, or have that crackhead on your side
I like how as soon as I click on melontee's video I get an ad of someone sipping tea.
the best way to describe a person sorry a legend
I'm from the Future. He had Brooks fruit. The distance between Bon Clay and Bartolemeo introduction chapter leads to the convo between Roger and Whitebeard. He said "I'm not gonna die, partner". It was a foreshadowing to him having Brooks inactive fruit.
Woooooo wasn’t expecting a roger vid happily surprised
