Closed loop theory applies to skills where there is an opportunity for feedback and a chance to adjust you motor programme during the movement so an example might be a skier hitting a patch of ice during a turn and adjusting their ski's to stay upright. Open loop are for even faster, more ballistic skills where there is not chance to adjust the motor programme (could be a golf swing) so any error to the motor programme will result in an incorrect execution.
