      JustJP it was indeed. One of the few concerts (concert is actually not a correct word, it was high concept music theatre) I wish I could see again. So sad realising that it was filmed with the best film equipment ever used on a venture like this and to this day nothing has ever been seen. That is Kate Bush for ya.

      I saw it too. Getting tickets to one of those shows needed to be planned like a military operation, as the release date and time were advertised well in advance, so tens of thousands of fingers would have been poised over keyboards at the pointed hour. I had to go up two price bands, as pairs of tickets we found would sell before I could buy them. When we eventually secured them it felt like winning the lottery. And the show was by a clear distance the best I've ever seen. I too am gutted the DVD may never appear, but the audio record is pretty damn good.

    Hello earth is inspired by a mass sinking of ships during a storm, Kate watched the covered of it on television, I believe shes said it was the main inspiration for the 9th wave. So in the song she's imagining viewing the earth from space and seeing the storm brewing that will sink her ship and put her in the water, and wishing she could warn everyone (and her self I guess) to go home and get out of the water.

    You ask what input the label had into this album, the answer is zero. This is the first album Kate made since building a studio in her hoe, and she established a pattern of recording and producing an album by herself and (eventually) presenting EMI with the finished product.
    Something that may be of interest to you - in 2014 Kate played a residency of 22 nights at the Hammersmith Odeon, her first live gigs for 35 years. For that she re-recorded "And Dream of Sheep" in a large tank of water at Pinewood Studios - 14 takes and a mild case of hypothermia later she had this - ua-cam.com/video/_256xd9N27o/v-deo.html
    She's singing to a backing tale but that's Kate actually singing in the cold water, you can really hear the shiver in her voice.
    Also you might be interested in some other songs she recorded at the same time as this album but didn't get on it and ended up as B sides of singles:
    Under the Ivy: ua-cam.com/video/TEXjabIgDIg/v-deo.html One of my favourite Kate Bush songs, especially this live version from Abbey Road Studios ua-cam.com/video/oWaj8wU_qRg/v-deo.html
    Burning Bridge: ua-cam.com/video/SsJrJc3X3b4/v-deo.html
    Not This Time: ua-cam.com/video/Waac8sNUNcs/v-deo.html
    Experiment IV: ua-cam.com/video/NTUcoR8_pyE/v-deo.html
    This last one is a bit of a cheat because it was recorded a few months after HoL, but I include it because it's a great song and the video is great with some notable guests such as the future House (Hugh Laurie), Aemon Targaryon from Game of Thrones (Peter Vaughan), and Kate's brother Paddy in the strait jacket and her then boyfriend Del Palmer strapped in the chair.
    Next has to be The Sensual World, not quite as good as HoL but still has some great songs.

      Yes that's right, even though she produced The Dreaming, she was still having to cope with costs incurred and the very disapproving sour faces at EMI, So they could not legally control her, but they could whine and weep and try to dissuade her, they tried to talk her out of producing, (there was no precedent for this) they talked her into collaborating with Hugh Padgeham, half way into production Hugh ran off screaming into the night. When it was finally finished they tried to talk her out of releasing it!! Can you imagine how horrified they must have been??? What happened to
      Our little pixie girl?? How did we go from 'Lamour looks Something Like You" to::
      With my ego in my gut
      My babbling mouth would wash it up
      Now I've started learning how..
      I keep it shut...

    The Ninth Wave is one of the most awesome suites/album sides in modern music. And I completely agree with you about the similarities between Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel's music, they both use pop music as a medium to produce real art. Two of my absolute favourite artists. It's great to see someone hearing and understanding stuff like this for the first time! Keep it up! And as you clearly enjoy this slightly avant-garde side, you will really appreciate another co-collaborator: Laurie Anderson - and I would definitely start with Gravity's Angel from Mister Heartbreak album. (Also, if you're interested, wife of the late Lou Reed). Give it a try. :)

    Kate produced this herself, she would have worked closely with the engineer, but apparently in production, her attention to detail is legendary, like the sea gull cry that you noticed. She also had an uncanny ability to remember exactly which takes were on which tracks, just from memory!! Knowing which takes were the good ones, which were mostly good, which were not good except for one little bit you want to keep...what tracks they were on, etc.. This is the bane of audio production. Just imagine the number of tracks of , not just instruments, but incidental voices and sonic events for a production like this???
    "Which track had that damn seagull?
    Lol..

    I remember getting the HOL home and waiting until the house had settled before putting it on. Expectant faces looking in unison at
    what once passed as an audio visual experience… i.e., looking at the red light on the front of the record player as the vinyl turned in the dark. There was
    some chatter during the mid-point ritual…
    Then no one spoke, moved and possibly no one breathed.
    After, when the lights were switched on, there were faces still staring at the stereo, mouths slightly agape and minds freshly born into
    a world that now contained ‘The Ninth Wave’.
    So sad you couldn’t put this out without the nit pickers ruining things, but you got to the heart of things as usual JP and the duality
    of position was an inspired observation. If however, you had just looked out at us with the same face as the ones described above, I think most of us would
    have understood.
    I add my vote for ‘Ariel’ there are some delightful KB idiosyncrasies there and she manages to sing the words ‘iridescent blue’ in a way no human
    woman should be permitted without a health safety warning.

    26:00 The male song/chant there is a sample from Tsintskaro (by Rustavi) - a Georgian (not the US...Georgia as in former USSR) traditional song. Worthy to check out for it's solemn and unusual sound.
    "Hello Earth" - i have always interpreted this that as this point she is dead/drowned. She has left her body and can now view the earth from above.

      Sometimes, I think of it as her thinking of the beginning, how she got in the water. She was an astronaut the plunged down in the ocean returning to earth. But I have also thought of her having an NDE or out of body experience as well.

    "Hounds of Love" is one of my fill masterpiece albums, a full and complete text. The B side, "The Ninth Wave..." you would need words crafted by Kate Bush herself to do side B justice in describing it. Decades later it still takes me places and I cannot interrupt it, if I start it I have to listen to it to the end.
    I always thought "Hello Earth" and "Morning Fog" tells the part of the story where she dies and ascends in to space/heaven whatever and can see the course of her life lived.
    Really awesome analysis. Thank you for this!

    I am amazed you braved this experience and committed a review of it. Much respect! When. I listen, I hear a person facing unexpected death, and experiencing all the psychological steps towards the end. There are out of body/ near death experiences and even a past life review ( Jig of Life)- my fave. Her vocal on this song alone is astounding. I found myself interpreting the upbeat piece as a reincarnation, after drowning. Life is new again, and the process of living continues on.

    Consider the Ninth Wave in light of the Russian 1850s painting "The Ninth Wave" - based on the following text:
    "It depicts a sea after a night storm and people facing death attempting to save themselves by clinging to debris from a wrecked ship. The debris, in the shape of the cross, appears to be a Christian metaphor for salvation from the earthly sin. The painting has warm tones, which reduce the sea's apparent menacing overtones and a chance for the people to survive seems plausible. This painting shows both the destructiveness and beauty of nature. "

      @@JustJP Hi Justin. Thanks for this great reaction video, I was eagerly waiting for it. Unfortunately, the complete one is unavalaible in my country, so it feels a bit frustrating as I like to watch people's reaction on their facial expressions as well. You'll understand more of "And Dream of sheep" watching the video she re-recorded (live) for inclusion in her "Before the Dawn" shows in 2014. Here it is:
      ua-cam.com/video/_256xd9N27o/v-deo.html
      And yes, Kate Bush produced and supervised the whole thing for "Hounds of Love".

      @@JustJP And it would seem logical for you to review a second suite she did 20 years later (2005) for the "Aerial" album, which is a whole disc called "A Sky of Honey". Brilliant too, but less dramatic and it could be the sequel to "The 9th Wave": 24 hours in summer near the sea, the sun cycle and the light variations being the scenery and the bird songs the soundtrack (KB even manages a duet with a blackbird!). A 40 minutes journey of serenity, contemplation and wit. Beautiful!

    The most beautiful piece of music ever written and performed. Ever since I first heard it in 1985 I knew what it was about even without listening to the lyrics. She just perfectly captures the atmosphere of floating between life and death.
    'And Dream of Sheep' is one of her best songs and therefore one of the best songs ever written. 'Under Ice' is the scariest thing I've ever heard. It even tops 'Get Out of my House' from her album 'The Dreaming'.
    I once read that 'The Ninth Wave' could also be interpreted as a bad trip. At the end of 'And Dream of Sheep' she refers to 'poppies heavy with seed' (heroine) which take her 'deeper and deeper'.
    The imagery of 'Under Ice' could be compared to the use of cocaine. 'Cutting out little lines in the Ice' can be taken as lines of cocaine, the skates as razors, and the ice as a mirror. At the end of the song she sees herself in the mirror/under the surface of the ice.
    Alledgedly Kate once sighted a UFO. This could explain looking at the earth from far above in 'Hello Earth'.
    'I get out of my car
    Step into the night and look up at the sky
    When there's something bright travelling fast.
    Just look at it go!.'
    This could read as an alien abduction. The alienating chorus from 'Nosferatu' picks her up to look at the earth from a distance, and puts her back down to earth at the end of the song.
    (BTW, the 'Little Light' that she starts with is the light on the life vest she is wearing when she's floating in a sea of nothingness)
    ua-cam.com/video/_256xd9N27o/v-deo.html
    In 2014 I was very lucky to see her perform 'The Ninth Wave' live on stage. The concert started with a set of unrelated songs. Just like a regular pop concert. Then the 'The Ninth Wave' started with a loud bang. A shower of confetti was blown into the theater. It had a quote of a Tennyson poem printed on it. For the die hard KB fans it became a free piece of memorabilia and not long after it was even sold on eBay. The 'real' sequences were live recordings of the songs that were projected on a floating screen (Notably 'And Dream of Sheep' when she is still concious, and the end of 'Hello Earth' when she gets rescued). The rest of the songs were performed live on stage. At some point there was even a 'helicopter' with search lights hovering over the audience.
    It was the most amazing musical performance I ever witnessed!

    Yay! I did watch all of it, and it was a pleasure. You're such an observant and articulate critic (in the best sense of the word) and knowing this album as I do, hearing what you have to say becomes a conversation in my own mind. Others have told you by now that Kate was the producer, and had the luxury of her own studio, which freed her and her team to experiment as they pleased without racking up costs or her label breathing down her neck. She said at the time that although it was a tremendous amount of work, she was the happiest she had ever been while making a record - and I think it shows. Certainly compared to The Dreaming, which, although nowadays highly regarded, is rather a dark and angry record, and left many critics bemused at the time of its release.
    Twenty years later, Kate released Ariel (12 years after her previous release), a double album on a similar model to HoL. The first CD is a collection of unrelated songs - (some of which are among her very best, I might add: King of the Mountain, Mrs Bartolozzi and The Coral Room get my votes for admission to the Hall of Fame). The second CD is another suite, or better, a pastoral song-cycle, that meditates on the passage of a beautiful summer's day.
    Birdsong stirring a child's wonder, anticipation for the adventure of a new day, a pavement artist deftly composing his landscapes, capturing they perfection of the natural world, the coming of dusk, lovers on a beach at night slipping out of their clothes and swimming naked into the waves, the coming of another day heralded by the joyful laughter of the birds, and the first rays of the sun touching the rooftops, triumphant as revellers after an all-night rave. It's a sensory and sensual (her modus operandi) idyll that only Kate Bush could conjure, a kaleidoscope of musical sounds and styles suffused with existential contentment. I'm sure she must have been in pretty good terms with life when she made that one too. I may like it even more than the Ninth Wave; which is more than anyone should be allowed to like anything, really! It's beautiful, it's a bit crazy, it's generous, it's sexy, it's affirming, and of course, it's quintessentially Kate Bush.
    Intrigued? Because I notice you've not done it yet, and it's an album that's strangely neglected here on UA-cam, so I'm hoping you have it on a to-do list somewhere. I should also point out that it is perfect music for August listening, and the world urgently needs to know what Justin thinks about Aerial! So can I leave that with you? Excellent, there's a good fellow, cheers 😉

    Hi, Justin,
    for me Hounds of Love is one of the best and most innovative albums of Kate Bush.
    This album contains on the first page a lot of excellent tracks which are today classics of Kate. The second side is on the whole always a special musical pleasure.
    The small German line of text in Hello Earth "tiefer, tiefer irgendwo in der tiefe Gibt es ein licht" is a reference to the film "Das Boot, Regie Wolfgang Petersen".

    I always interpreted that choppy vocal effect as Kate coming up sputtering to the literal and figurative surface after having sunk under during Under Ice. It happens again in Watching You Without Me. It's like she's projected herself home, but the reality of her situation keeps interfering, breaking the spell. But that's just me talking, and I smoke a lot of weed.

    Good interpretations. The last bit made me laugh when you wanted to give credit to the producers. That’s what makes Kate Bush so impressive, she does the lot, writes, sings, dances BUT also she producers her own albums. Agree there’s so much thought and imagination in the production, this ensures the tracks never become boring. They seem to become better after multiple listens. Instead of listening to The Ninth Wave you start to feel it.

If you feel it’s time as well let me know and I can recommend your next song to further you along the Sinead rabbit hole. Keep doing what you’re doing... appreciate it. (And regarding Kate Bush, you should definitely listen/react to Suspended in Gaffa.) :)

    One way I enjoy interpreting The Ninth Wave is as an existential journey through an acute wave of depression leading to an attempted suicide. But ending with an awakening of true self, and a renewed sense of self.

    If I could recommend an amazing and UNDERRATED MASTERPIECE of an album to listen to:
    Paula Cole “This Fire”
    Not many people actually know what a great piece of work this was for Paula, haven taken her for a two hit wonder in the 1990’s.
    As far as the music, not just sonically, but her vocals are phenomenal. So much heart, so emotive.
    I hope some people will back me on this, and we can make this happen! She was actually discovered and backed by Peter Gabriel.
    (You’d be the only one on UA-cam reviewing this album, but maybe that could change)
    Like if you agree, FAM.

    If you do want to look at the idea that seemingly Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush make up an entire genre of music all it's own, look up the Fairlight Rhythm Programmer and the advent of digital workstation sampling. Also, both Kate and Peter regullarily used gated percussion sounds years ahead of Phil Collin's making it popular with In the Air .

    My suggestion for next Kate album is "The Sensual World." It's not her most loved album, I don't know why. But make sure you have the CD with Walk Straight Down The Middle. There are so many incredible songs on it, especially Between a Man and A Woman, Never Be Mine, *Rocket's Tail* and of course, the title track.

    ~~~ The Ninth Wave ~~~
    In Irish mythology, the ninth wave refers to the limit of Ireland, its border, beyond which all is foreign.
    the ninth wave is the ancient pre-EU border of Ireland.
    You can find lots of Irish things in the works of Kate Bush.
      @@JustJP Just a skin and a frame. Play between your legs, standing or on your knee. Extremely primitive and raw. Used almost exclusively in middle eastern music but the Irish have a heavier duty thing you hit with a single double headed stick. and the Italians something they play with a very loose skin called a Tamburello.. tends to be mic'd up for volume. Basic frame just wood and skin is called a Tar. The version with horizontal wires across the middle gives a nice snarey effect and is called a Bendir and the only other I know is one where the put "shower rings" around the inside of the frame so it jangles in addition to the usual sounds. that's called a Daf... and then there's what many regard as the ultimate frame drum, a tiny indian design with a single cymbal, the Kanjira. Frame drums usually accompany dancers and Whirling Dervishes. They take a bit of practice but the way you play the hang I think you might be great!
    Juxtapose her skating on the ice and being trapped beneath it. Flying in a space capsule and witnessing that space capsules miraculous flight across the sky from the ground. Being lost at sea, presumably dead and witnessing the activity of her loved one back at home and the helplessness of trying to communicate with him.     Good observations. This suite is complex. There's a lot of metaphors. Kate was influenced by her older brothers growing up. They were big into prog rock. King Crimson and Genesis were big. Kate also worked closely with Gabriel in the development of Babooska, which of course led to the Dreaming.
    My suggestion King Crimson, the albums Red and Discipline. Two different eras.
    Genesis: Supper's Ready
    Kate Bush: Aeriel. Like Hounds...theres songs, and then theres a suite. The suite is Stunning. From the songs, my favorite is Coral Room.
    EMI wanted a more hit single oriented album because of the mixed response of The Dreaming, she refused of course ( she had been granted total creative control since her first release and had an army of lawyers waiting in the
    wings, Lol...)
    So...she gave them the Hounds of Love accessible half, and created her own opus, Ninth Wave half...she wanted two titles for the release, which they denied. She actually divided a release into two perfect halves, one after the other....unbelievable...I don't think this has EVER been done.
      Bowie's Low. - Hits on the first side, Prog genius that radio won't touch on the other.
      Roy Harper's One of Those Days in England. - same deal
      Pink Floyd's Meddle...
      Mark King's Influences... (Yeah... THAT Mark King. While Level 42 were popping it up in the charts, King released a solo album with an epic Jazz Fusion instrumental taking up all of side 2)
      There are many examples. I will always miss the two sided LP format, not to mention 7" B sides that weren't on any album. The day CDs were invented, we lost an important dynamic device in the ordering of songs on an album.
    As for the music? I don't think we know if she's rescued or not. Hello Earth could mean that she's leaving her body and looking down on the world below her from an ever increasing height.
    And the Morning Fog could either mean that she HAS been rescued, or that she's reunited with her loved ones in heaven or whatever.
