I first started getting in to Kate Bush shortly before this album came out. I was a huge Pink Floyd nerd, and knew that David Gilmour had been involved in starting her career, so I bought her greatest hits compilation The Whole Story, and immediately loved it. And then this album came out. I bought all of her albums very quickly that year.

I tell you why I think you are the best reactor out here Justin (oh come on, lets face it its not a reaction you provide, its a musical critique, and how you do it after a single hearing is quite effortless and impressive), and its simply this...I don't have a musically trained ear, I just love and let the final product overwhelm me or otherwise, but you highlight things I haven't picked up on in almost 40 years of following this utter genius (and its not just Kates work where this applies either)...I thought I knew Kate inside out, could argue the toss over her forever and a day, but you've added an extra hidden layer that makes me reappreciate her all over again, so a big thanks...I agree also that this isn't mind blowing by Kates high standards, and I've often felt it was an album filler which may explain her commentary that you read, just Kate in her comfort zone, safe in the knowledge its just a good song that will satisfy her fan base and perhaps an easy access entry for new fans to fall into under her spell...seems you're going in order here, so how you react to the next track The Fog, intrigues. And yes, its David Gilmour as in, you know David Gilmour, not to be confused with any other David Gilmour any of us may meet n life...wait til Rockets Tail, s looking forward to that...Cheers bud and keep safe.

I think this song is beautifully written. That whole idea of having something to say but it's too deep to mention really made sense to me when I first heard it at 18 years old. This is one of her best songs, and best recordings. The drumming and the singing and all great bass and guitars... like you said, it has so much momentum.

This is one of my absolute favorites. I just love the energy of the song. As you say, it has the same vibe as The Big Sky, but this is a much better song. The backing vocals are multi tracks of Kate and her brother Paddy. And you missed the very last second of the song, when she bursts into laughter. A shame she almost never performed live, I would've loved to see a live version with her and David.

Gawd, I remember when this song was new...I was really, REALLY into Pink Floyd, back then, and this, featuring David Gilmour (yeah, David David Gilmour!, who was in the video, as well), just hit me at the right time. Really had that A MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON vibe to it too, which I love. So this one is a favorite KB song of mine. And I love the way it builds towards the end. By the time it's over, it just leaves me feeing good and energized. So, this was a nice way to start the day, today.

I like your description of the chorus not being overly refined. To me it always reminded me of the local villagers coming out to support the protagonist trying to decide how to deal with that stone and timber house, an exquisite archaic metaphor about relationships, oh, and that darned rope. And I think Gilmour plays it just right.

Agree. Gilmour is my favorite guitarist, so I get the feeling of wishing he had done more, here...'cause it's Gilmour. But it's a testament to his sensibilities and taste that he DIDN'T, but instead played to the song, and not his ego. He doesn't play a lot of notes, he plays the RIGHT notes for the context. This was Kate's moment, after all.

You come straight to the point with your head on interpretation of the song. You are very languistic developed and have a very keen ear for detail. This is what makes your reactions so worthwhile, Justin. You let me hear things I haven't heard for 30 years! The acoustic guitar way in the back? Wow! And yes! If you have Dave G to play on your recording, make use of the man! This song had to grow on me, but it has. I think it is really better and more balanced than The Big Sky.

The video of this song had the distinction of being featured on MTV's Beavis and Butthead, but they just talked over it. I really like the video - it has lots of movement in a way similar to the one for "The Big Sky", but in addition, Kate's session musicians appear at the end.

For another song with Kate Bush and David Gilmour together try Roy Harper’s ‘You’ from the album ‘ The Unknown Soldier’ where Kate shared the vocals and Gilmour supported Harper’s acoustic with electric guitar. This song makes good use of both their talents.
Roy Harper had a long relationship with the two, Gilmour played in his band before Pink Floyd and both supported Kate Bush in her breakthrough into the music industry. Roy sang lead vocal on ‘Have a Cigar ‘ on Floyd Album ‘Wish You Were Here’ and backing vocals on Kate Bush’s ‘Breathing ‘ from Never Forever’ .
Roy Harper would be an interesting diversion to react to in his own right as despite still performing he has never had the profile that his music deserves and he has a different style to what you have done so far. Try ‘Same old Rock’ from his amazing 1971 album ‘Stormcock’ where he was supported on guitar by Jimmy Page. (He was a well connected and well respected chap). Zeppelin of course dedicated a song to him on Zeppelin 3 - ‘Hats off to Roy Harper’.

Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel with other 80's artist traveled the different countries ran into Tribes or people who had music that really inspired their creativity to write and perform music that was a mixture of ancient tribal music with modern western music. Kate Bush and other musicians not only put out this blend of world music with western Rock n' Roll music but the tribal people or ancient people with this unique instrumental on their album or single performing with them to introduce these unique tribal people and their music to the world. Peter often had a surprise female guest to sing this duet and this one time, the guest was the original singer, Kate. The crowd reaction gives an idea of the high regard Kate is held in the UK. Interesting to listen to an album I bought on release, but don't remember. This track sounds unusually direct and commercial, and it does sound very 1980's. Often not a great sounding decade, in my opinion. I enjoyed the track on a superficial level, it has a decent guitar solo not instantly recognisable as David Gilmour, but I've already forgotten it, so no real hooks for me. I am hearing The Big Sky, though.

Wonderful analysis. "Mindblowing" - I agree, The Big Sky was the low point of Hounds of Love. (Good but not on a level with the rest.) By 89, there are a lot of good songs, not as many mindblowing pieces on her albums, but you have a few coming further along. The next one, The Fog (with Nigel Kennedy guesting) is definately the high point of side one for me. (I'd skip The Red Shoes and move straight to Aerial after Sensual World.)

I wouldn't, there are some excellent songs on The Red Shoes, and one of them, "Moments of Pleasure" is as good as any song she has produced on any album.

@@silgen I'm not saying to skip it for good - i was mostly referencing Justin's comment about 80's sound, and the fact that Kate herself didn't like The Red Shoes' production - most of the songs on Director's Cut were re-recordings of its songs - only 3 from Sensual World. She also hates the film she created based on it. Being a fan, i always felt a little guilty for not getting more into it, and was surprised to find she didn't like it much herself. (I think it was also the circumstances of its creation.) That being said, yes, there are very good songs on it: title track, Song of Solomon, Moments of pleasure, but to me, it really is the least of all Kate's albums. If Justin doesn't intend to cover all her discography, then i'd move on to her more interesting later work.

After the fantastic track "The Sensual World", I'm much less enthusiastic about "Love and Anger" which I find very simplistic in its form and melody. Indeed this song looks a lot like "The Big Sky" and since I was not a fan of it, this cover does not fascinate me either.

When this album first came out, I really didn't like it. It seemed like the production was very 'muddy' after Hounds of Love and The Dreaming, which I loved. But is it an 80s production sound? Maybe, but not as much as its predecessors. But over time, I have to say this album has really grown on me, and I now think of it as one of her best. I wonder if I'll get to that stage with the Red Shoes album? There are some great tracks on there, but overall, there are too many 'meh' moments for it to work as an album for me.

One of Kate's greatest songs. She may not know what it's about, but it kinda reminds me of "The Big Sky" with the mad percussion removed.
And hey, you cut off the very end of the song where Kate laughs!!!

kinda crazy how much i disliked this album on the first few listens. It's really so great but just took a bit of work for me to connect to it. Now i love it.
Having said that, i kind of wish you had gone to Never for Ever or the underrated Lionheart albums first

I think Kate is being a bit disingenuous here. Obviously she does know what it’s about as she wrote it. She can be a bit precious at times but I forgive her. Not one of her best but nice production.
