Do you want to spice up your launchpad cover? Have you ever wondered how to assign multiple samples to a single button on your launchpad? Do you ever wonder why I ask so many rhetorical questions?
Most of these questions will be answered in this video! Follow along as I teach you how to multi-sample as well as how to use the Random MIDI Effect to alternate between different sounds/light effects for each button press.

Oh i have a question! So ill use louder by SoNevable for example. He mutisampled the vocals in that song, But if you mess up, is there a way to reset the multisampling?? without reopening the project?

Hey! So ive completed my project maxforlive lights and everything i save my lights make the Save file folder thing, But everytime i try and open the lights the window just keeps popping up!!! If you could reply or make a vid on that i would be SO Happy and grateful :)
You have to move the MIDIext folder to the max dir root (C:/ (or whatever u use) blah blah blah /Program Files/Cycling 74/Max #
And inside the MIDIext folder u should have a folder named after your project (keep in mind these folders cant have spaces so take "Project-1" or "Project1" instead of "Project 1")
Now inside these folders is where you have all the .mid files including the save file

Sadly, I've kinda neglected the use of my Launchpad S for a while because of the daunting task of learning how to sample and do lighting properly. But thanks to these videos, I am feeling quite inspired and can't wait to get started making my first cover/mashup! I just got my Launchpad MK2 about a week ago & just finished watched your tutorial & it helped me out so much. I have been trying to get into DJing for a number of years, so this is great it was clear i can see myself getting a good mass - up is was i;m calling it lol.

RAX I found a different solution which works: on the sound clip (in drum rack), change from classic to one-shot

InspirAspir can you do a tutorial on how to create your own stems for songs. cos i want to learn how to do it for covers. thank you
You can only "create" stems for songs if you create the song itself, since you as the creator have access to each layer of the song. Otherwise, you can't just "make" stems for any song that exists, the stems of any song have to be released by the artist themselves
Great, inspir ! But just a thing, don't u think is easier to select "1-shot" and detune each sample 1 semitone at multisample? It's faster than dragging pitches every time :D
I agree! I think that would be a little quicker & would save a lot of time if you have a lot of samples. Good call :D
but I've noticed that you always have to HOLD down the button to hear all of the sound when multisampling? Anyway to get around that?

Is there a way to kinda make your own stems for a song, or at least isolate every part of it?
when you export, choose 'All Individual Tracks' instead of 'Master' (It's in a dropdown)
I mean from a finished song to stems if you cant find stem files

I have a question about the midi extension. I have everything downloaded and installed, but every time I open a project that uses the midi extension, i need to do an automatic search because ableton cant find it on its own. the midi extension folder is in presets/midi effects/max midi extension. any suggestions?
This is SO HELPFUL. SUPER. One question though. Are you using the full version ableton? I forgot if you mentioned it or not, because I want to know if this series also applies to the lite version. Does anybody know? ....help
From what I know, as long as you DONT have 8 or more tracks (for palying a song on the launchpad it normally takes three) your fine. I'm doing it right now.
I have a slight problem. When I put multisamples into an instrument rack, I change them to one shot, but for some reason, it lowers the vol < vel dial by 10%, which makes my samples noticeably quieter, any tips on how to avoid this or default it to change that?
I believe you could alter the velocity to the level you like, right click on your sample in the instrument rack and choose something along the lines of "Set preset as default"? I am fairly certain there is an option to do this, and that way every sample you add from then onwards will have the same characteristics as your original sample, hopefully including volume
I set it as my default preset, but samples after that are still lower volume :(

What other ways of sampling are there possible? I know only for Slice2Midi and Stems but is there any other way?
You can manually sample by chopping up the audio yourself like I did in part 3 of this series, but other than that there aren't any ways to sample that I know of :D
InspirAspir I use midi fire and I was wondering, Would this work with midi fire or no?
I know this is old but I hope I get a response. What im looking for is every time I stop pressing the button I think its going to go back to the beginning like to the first sample but no it stays where you last left it. I want it to start over to the first sample it threw me off by a lot. is there any way to fix that? if not I got to cycle through it again to get to the first sample. thanks a lot

Okay, I have a complicated question and I'm going to explain it the best I can.
Is there a way to make it where it's like the Multi-Sampling but you can make it go on multiple buttons, like each corresponding button would play the next sample that would've been in the one button?

I wanted to play drums while the build up was playing but It seems that I've hit a road block, I was wondering if you could help me, thx. :D
Within your instrument rack go to the sample you want, and to the far left of the sample window there is an option called "1-shot" (the default is called "classic", that's most likely what you have selected). Choosing this option allows the sample to play in full once it is triggered, i.e. it will play once you press it & let go.
Doing this with multi-samples is as simple as assigning them all to one button, and setting them all to 1-shot :D

I have a really good question: how would you make page 1 piano sound and page 2 drum kit and page 3 perhaps both?? any ways to do this?
Ableton has the samples used within these kits built in their libraries, so in theory you could manually drag in some of each of these kits into your instrument rack. Ableton has a sample of every pitch of their default piano, so a sample for A#1 or for D6 for example. They also have every raw .wav file for every drum sample used in their kit, so if there's a particular sound you like, you could find it and drag that sound into your instrument rack along with some piano sounds you like

In the audio sample window, change the ‘Classic’ option to ‘1-Shot’

Why the pitch on multisamplig? I use traspose (is on the simpler)
It all works the same, as long as the pitch is adjusted some way and it sounds good it doesn't really matter how it's done :D

plug both in, the buttons should be like C#-1 & D#6 & not A1-G#6 on the seconds one, be careful! if you plug them into your computer in opposite orders of when you made the project, the chords might mess us & swap

Heres a thing I'd love to have covered. Many of the songs dont have the drum stems avaible so how can I cut the drums off the song? I can properly sample but I cant figure out the way to do that. I cannot make the drums to be separate of the whole song.
SO to sum it up I neeeeed a tutorial on how to cut them off to create separate drums to the song (And by that I mean the drums that you usually play with your left hand lol)

In general the process is the same: "remove" the drums from your song either by phasing or volume automation, and play a close version of accessible drum samples overtop of the edited song.

I believe so, the functionality is the same regardless of what MIDI controller you use. In theory you could multi-sample with a keyboard, it's all the same concept :D

What does the Scale effect do???
The scale effect is mainly used when making music, it adjusts incoming MIDI notes to match whatever key you play. Say for example you set it to a C major scale and you play an off-note like C#, it will automatically adjust that incoming note to be in key, so perhaps turn it into a D.
Since this is moreso used when making music in Ableton and doesn't really apply to any Launchpad functionality, I decided not to cover it :D

Unfortunately you cannot assign a MIDI light effect to a button in Ableton Lite. You can make any light effect that you can make using MIDI notes by using the chain-based method of lights. That is, it's possible to make any light effect in Ableton Lite, it is just a little more difficult. But I promise it's possible :D

Whenever I play the multi sample, it always plays the next sound in a higher pitch. Did I do something wrong?
Did you watch the end of the video? You need to offset the multi-sample's pitch by adding in a pitch MIDI effect (there are other ways to do this but I think this is fairly simple)

Has anyone figured out how to use a second launchpad and get the lights to work? I have the samples loaded in the 2nd launchpad just fine but the lights only trigger on the first launchpad. I have my second one set to user 2 also.
Hayden Tree you have to use user 1, make each launchpad different MIDI tracks, set the outputs to the correct launchpads and make the music symbol red, should now work.
