  • Week 4 Lesson 2. Online lesson for ARTH 263 Spring 2020 at the University of Illinois at Chicago. This episode finishes covering the Casta system, and addresses the last Casta: The Savage. Always shown in the roaming the wild, the figure of the barbarian Indian fueled European anxieties about the supposed treacherous and uncivilized nature of the Indigenous populations.

Hiii. First I wanna say thanks to you and Justin for Latinos Who Launch. Definitely one of my favorite podcasts. Regarding the video, I wanted to ask if there are any books/papers that focus specifically on the clothing that was assigned to specific groups (like the manga, which you mentioned in the video) and also could you say that those standards of cast clothing are still present in traditional Mexican clothing like el terno yucateco in contrast with the hipil?

Was the word “Indios” also meant “sin Dios”?

When most people talk about castas, they focus on the eighteenth century. Why are you looking at the seventeenth century?

Hi Ray, thank you for your question. We refer to the casta system in relation to both the 17th and the 18th century, however, casta paintings are indeed from the 1700 hundreds. Saludos
