- How to use paddle shifters in a Mustang is often asked by Mustang owners. Paddle shifters in the mustang has allowed the automatic mustangs to be really fun.
Once you learn how to use paddle shifter in a Mustang, you will be enjoying your Mustang a lot. While paddle shifters in a Mustang won't be as fun as driving a manual transmission, it's much better than traditional automatic.
I definitely enjoy using the paddle shifter a lot in my 2019 Mustang GT. It has made my 10 speed automatic Mustang GT really fun to drive.

Fun fact: if you hold the + paddle while in sport & paddle mode on the transmission, it'll revert back to automatic so you don't have to switch into D then back to S if you're done using the paddles 👍🏼
Yup discovered it last week! Actually made a video on that too lol. But yes prior to that I was switching from S to D to stop full manual mode
@@Red5oh ah, I must've missed that vid. Definitely a game changer!
@@BMock590 it is! I’m like how did I not know that in almost 3 years of ownership lol
I love you for this
@@dylan.hatfield read your reply wrong the first time lol. But yeah I gotchu 🫡
Another fun fact, if you are in sport on the transmission and have paddle shifters engaged say you hit a stop light, you can shift up to second from a FULL STOP and it will take off in second giving you a but more boost, also good if youre just driving around a mall parking lot or stores, not too loud but can be revved if you wanna show off some lmao
Yeah that’s a good point. Some boosted cars actually have a tune to launch on 2nd gear to avoid wheel spin with so much power lol. Corsa is too loud so maybe I gotta try it out to not be too obnoxious
Thanks, one of the very few videos that shows properly how it works! :)
Thank you! I posted one last week that is an updated version. You should check it out!
One thing you forgot to mention is that if you put the transmission in sport mode and then use the paddles they lock in manual mode, but you can put it back in auto mode by pulling and holding both paddles for a few seconds.
Yes I always use that feature and should've mentioned it! It's very useful not having to shift it back in forth from D to S
I learned that on my ecoboost using both paddles to go back to auto mode
This is exactly the video I needed!!!
Thanks for watching glad you found it helpful. Paddle shifters are really fun to use on the mustang!
@@Red5ohyou said the response for the paddle shifters are so quick. But mine are the opposite. It takes like an entire second to shift when I click it.
If you pick "S" on your transmission lever, car downshifts for you when coming to lights. You stop and you are on 1st gear. If light turn green, you move the car. So if you forget to paddle shift gear, Stang stays at 1st gear on redline or just upshift gear to 2nd and so on?
If the paddles are activated and you’re in S mode then it won’t shift after you accelerate from the light. It would hit the rev limiter in 1st gear. However if the paddles aren’t activated and you’re in S mode then it would shift automatically for you 1-2-3-4 etc.
@@Red5oh thank you for your reply! Love Mustangs
@@synnek3596 thanks for watching my videos! Got tons more planned out
Great show brilliant I have 2019 Mustang GT with TEN speed and I love it 😻 thank you so much from Sydney Australia 😊
Thank you for watching! 10 speed is great on our cars. Enjoy the mustang from Australia!
Clean and clear demo, thanks
Thank you! Glad you found it helpful
Are you able to rev the engine like clutching it into neutral on a manual?
No you can only do that with a dct transmission
I booked my first ecoboost mustang ever. 🙏 idk if it has paddle shifter or not though lol.
Congrats!! Ecoboost for 2024 model only has paddle shifter if equipped with performance pack unfortunately
Not true my 2021 ecoboost has paddle shifters
automatic and convertible would be a real cool and carefree combination
With a loud V8 so you can hear the exhaust more!
Just purchased 5.0 prem. conv. 10 spd auto. Used to listen to alot more music but now I found a new band and her name is MUSTANG!
@@harrystanlick5019 music to everyone’s ears in traffic. congratulations Harry!
Hay I get a 2021 5.0 now and I use to drive a 2018 Honda accord but ok the 5.0 the automatic gear goes up to fast at 30 miles I already in 8 or 9
Yeah unless you’re in sport mode the gears will climb up pretty fast
What rpm do you usually downshift at for second to first when coming to a stop light. I have had my eco boost for about a month now and I can nail my other shifts but second to first is giving me a good jerk. Also nice gt!
Yeah 2nd to 1st can be jerky. I actually just let it downshift for me. When you’re coming to a stop even in full manual mode the car will do drop gears for you automatically so 2-1 is done by the car
@@Red5oh Alright cool, thank you so much🙂
@@Red5ohwhen I’m at a red light in sport mode and I manually shift into 3rd it’s a bit jerky, what rpm’s do I shift at from 2nd to 3rd
Never drop down into first coming to a stop until the car is completly stopped.
i tend to down shift from 2-1 around 10-15mph
Anyway to rev without being in neutral while driving ? If someone shouts rev it do I always have to go to N ?
Neutral or park
Yes neutral to be able to rev it
Great instruction.
Thank you!
I recently bought a 2019 mustang GT is it normal for hard shifts while in S mode
Yes
It should have firm shifts but not harsh shifts. There’s a difference. If it’s harsh where shift doesn’t feel right then you might need a transmission update
Let’s say I roll to a redlight I shift from 2rd gear to first gear is it bad for the engine?
It’s not bad for the engine per se but not required
@@Red5oh okay, im just worried cause I started it today and I like it😂
what is the lowest engine speed you can shift to?
It would depend on the specific situation. Good thing is that if it’s too low the car shift so you won’t mess up anything
Let’s say I’m on first gear and I press on the gas without shifting will it correct itself and shift for me on its own ?
It will cut the gas at redline so you can shift then.
Great and informative vid! Helped a lot
Thank you! Paddle shifters in the Mustang really add a lot of fun to the auto transmission.
How to avoid stalling when shifting from second to first while coming to a stop? i got a 17 ecoboost with 6r80 transmission
You shouldn’t be stalling an automatic transmission from 2nd to 1st gear. What do you mean by stall really
@@mentana9344 mt82 is the manual 6r80 is 6 speed auto lol
@@Red5oh it’s not like manual stalling it’s more like a little jerking
@@Red5oh Whoops, you rite.
@@juliankazzi2019yeah I hate that idk if my car has something wrong but it shouldn't do that
Was that and SRT jeep or limited X? Noticed the dual exhaust tips
I didn’t notice. Where? Lol
@@Red5oh7:31
Hey so when you are in the sports mode with the paddles on will the car up shift if you get close to redline and you forget to use the paddles?
It will just cut the power off letting you know to shift. It won’t overrev the engine like you can in a manual and cause damage
So 22 10spd gts cant be tuned yet ? 😭just traded my 21 6spd for a 10spd
Congrats on the new car! Unfortunately as of right now they cannot be tuned yet as far as I know. I am sure tuning companies will unlock the ecu soon
Great video! So I have a bit of a problem, my 2021 mustang gt 5.0 PP1 only gets like 225 miles on a full tank of 93 gas. Lately, a full tank is only giving me 190 miles. I saw that I had 14mpg when I think it’s supposed to be like 21mpg or so. I have an automatic transmission. Lastly, since the car is 16 gallons, how come when I’m filling it up at the gas station it only filled up to 10 gallons? I usually fill when I’m around 50 miles to empty.
How are your driving habits? If you drive aggressively I can see those kind of numbers. When I fill up around 10 miles to E I get out a mount 14 gallons so 10 gallons isn’t too far off for 50 miles to E especially if. You get 14 mpg or so
@@Red5oh I really hope that guys knows this. You should definitely know this before you have a 5.0 because it definitely isn’t or shouldn’t be someone’s first car ….
I fill mine when it gets down to half a tank gas cost too damn much!! See Automatics will actually burn more gas than the manual! They are also more dangerous if you think about it.. They’re awake and balls to the wall constantly. Manual isn’t until you put it in gear..I’m just wondering how many of those Mustang drivers that crash into people and curbs are automatics . A manual gives you more ways to slow down also. The automatic transmission floats the redline in many if not all the gears! Trust me you don’t need to rev these cars that high ! The power band is between like 2,000 RPMs and 4250 also when all the torque kicks in.. maximum horsepower at 6500 not at the redline. So no need to ever go past 7,000 really!
At some point I was getting 12mpg average. Then again I’m near FBO gen 2 5.0 manual and I have a habit of shifting after 2500rpms because that is when the exhaust note changes and sounds really mean.
@@AngerMaker413 yeah definitely don’t want to be having 460 hp as your first car that’s how we end up in crash compilation
I have a 2015 v6. If I have it on S do I need to use the paddle shifters? Or can I just drive it as it is without using paddle shifters?
You can drive it in S without paddle shifters. S will give you more throttle response and rev match downshift for you. But using paddles in S is not required
Thank you!
Hope it was helpful!
i feel when I use mu paddle shifter it burns the transmission i can smell it but maybe its in my head cause i just got my gt and i don't wanna fuck it up 😂😂
Haha congrats on the new car and take it easy! When you’re revving your car high it will some times smell like it but shouldn’t be an issue
When I drive my car really hard/fast I notice a smell too, is that normal I don’t want to destroy it lol
What’s the difference between sport and sport+
They are almost the same. Sport + slightly modifies the traction control system. Sport let’s you hold gears manually with paddle shifters
How do you get those additional three clusters in the middle?
There’s an option to enable gauges. There’s 7 different you can choose from. 3 can be displayed. You have to go through the pony button and click on gauges
I just bought a 21 ecoboost base model and it dont have a paddle shifters can i equip it at any shop ?
I believe they removed them from base models around that model year for cost cutting.
@@Red5oh i know but can I install one ?
@@Yamen_qq yes I believe the connection is there you just need to hook it up
@@Red5oh thanks alot bro ❤️
Does the car jerk if you downshift, mine does it so hard
It’s not suppose to. Occasional jerk can happen with 10 speed but shouldn’t be a regular occurrence
My 21 ecoboost didn’t come with paddles would it be possible to put a steering wheel w paddles
Interesting! I’ve been hearing that 21-22 Ecoboost don’t come with it unless you get I think premium or performance pack. What Trim level is yours? Idk why ford would remove them to begin with
Idk if you still have it but I’ve heard that you can switch steering wheels,I’m going to do it today to see how it goes
So with a 2015 eco I can’t just keep it in sport and not do paddles?
Yes you can! Paddles are simply if you want to manual shifting. Putting it in S or sport mode will allow for quicker shifting and improved throttle response
what happens if you hold both paddles at same time when driving
Nothing really. Whichever paddle gets pressed first will either upshift or downshift. You can’t hold both and rev unfortunately
How can I activate the shifters? Mustang Mach 1 2023
By tapping the paddles once it should activate them
where did you get your paddle shifter extensions?
I got them from amazon. Link in bio!
just got my mustang so at how many rpm’s should I shift ?
For starters try to upshift around 4k rpm and downshift around 3k rpm. I have in depth tutorials on mustang paddle shifters. Once you get a hang of it you should be able to increase those points
Can you rev it in neutral using the paddles?
Unfortunately no. Only dct transmission can do that like GT500 and C8 corvette. I would’ve loved to rev in neutral with paddles
@@Red5oh ahhh gutted! Will probably save me some fuel at the lights then
Hey, wanted to know is it just my car that does this or is shifting to 3rd gear super harsh on the A10 transmission. My mustang shifts smooth in normal mode but when in Sport and manual shifting going in and coming out of 3rd gear is super Jumpy.
Yup mine was jerky in sport mode. I have couple videos on it. Dealer performed a tsb and software update and it has been fine since
@@Red5ohhow much did that cost you

Hello I’m curious, I’m getting a 2016 mustang. I wanted to know if They come with an automatic & manual transmission together in one car???
If you have auto and have paddle shifters you can shift “manually”
Do I need to let go of gas before using petal shifters up I’m new 2 the automatic transmission
Nope you don’t have to do that. It would result in a smoother shift but not required
My automatic gt premium doesn’t have paddle shifters even though it’s fully optioned… can I just install them?
What year is your car? 2015 and up mustang gts should come standard with paddle shifters
I NEED HELP. Okay so I’m in the market for a 2020 or newer mustang gt. I want the gt performance pack. With the Digital dash and it has to be a 10 speed. What mustang come with the 10 speed. I’ve found that it was introduced in 2018. So any mustang gt with an auto trans has the 10 speed? I’m so confused
This must be exciting! 2018 and up mustang gt with auto will be 10 speed. Just don’t get 2022 mustang gt yet as they are down on power and can’t be tuned yet as their ecu is locked. Good luck with search! Hit me up if you have any questions

@@knightrider3766 they have 450 hp instead of 460 hp and at that time you couldn’t tune them. You can carbon traps to get that extra 10 hp and they can also be tuned now so neither of the reasons are an issue anymore. Congrats on the new car btw!

The manual mode isn’t quite the same as the actual 6 speed. I’m sure it might come sorta close. That’s not the GT500 with the twin clutch! So you definitely won’t get the same feel.. Boring!!
Lol of course it’s not same as manual but as close as you can get while avoiding MT82 issues lol
