I think he's telling the truth. My guess is by the time of this interview, he was finished taking LSD. A few years after this interview, he would experiment with heroin and cocaine, and become hooked.
Pete Townshend had one LSD trip too many, and never touched it again after a bad trip in 1967. He later tried heroin in 1979 when he was thirty-four and became addicted.
Hell, I had a bad LSD trip in college in 1991, and I never touched it again.
