Good review. I would add the Tech 7 enduro dry star boots to try. They are the best I have worn. Waterproof membrane is worth it!

Second this, I had the corzal drystar adv boots and the waterproofing is awesome. That is until your up to your knees in water lmao.
Spent 5 days in them doing moto camping, riding, hiking, grocery store. All good. Just kinda lacks protection for more aggressive riding.
Going with the tech 7 enduros next.

The AXO A2 was, and is a very good boot. So comfortable and well built. Unfortunately parts are hard to find.
The Gaerne SG12 is by far the best boot for me. I bought a well used, couple of year old pair for $40 and they're still holding up great. Absolute beast of a boot.

A lot of room in this foot, I'm a size 13 and always had problems finding comfortable boots (because I always went for fox) and this tech 7 fit like a glove, I don't think I'm ever buying anything else (besides maybe those sg12 look pretty sweet)

After using my Gx1’s for 3 years they were very soft and i ended up spraining my ankle on a hill climb. That was the point where i decided i needed better boots. After already having a good experience with gaerne boots and hearing a lot of good things about them, i got the Sg12’s. I immediately noticed how stiff they were and how much more supported and safer i felt. Of course feeling the brake and shifter at first was difficult and resulted in a lot of accidental neutrals but i love these boots. I am going to wear these boots for many years and when the time comes to replace them, i will get them again. Also, red and white boots ftw.

Ive got a pair of the Fox. Honestly, no issues yet. Very comfortable and Kyle is right on with how easy to walk in they are. Riding with them now 2+ years, but likely dont ride anywhere near as much as Kyle. I also ride east coast trails which is a bit different on demands and terrain than the mountain rides. Also, Kyle hoping you will get a pair of the Tech 7/9s here soon for a review. They are very popular here in Ga, so will be interesting to see your opinion.

I haven't had a problem with the Fox Instinct parts coming off like you described, but several buckles on them have broken while putting them on or taking them off. Just seems like the plastic quality isn't that great. Granted, I got mine around 2014 or something.
I do like the comfort (lack of stiffness if you will) and how easy it is to use the pedals with them compared to my previous boots which were TCX Pro 2s which were stiff as hell, but they did last me about 6 - 8 years of riding without a single replacement part.
The inner booties, on the TCX at least, are actually really comfortable and make washing the boost much easier and they dry faster than ones with out them. So I will say there should be no need to worry about that.

Ive been running the Sidi x-3 and they are a good balance between flex and protection. I came from a tech 10 which sound similar to the crossfires as they were crazy stiff but id only run those for mx bc trails I prefer movement as you need more control of the bike and walking more.

I would not be discouraged at all by the bootie. I had the origjnal Tech 8's that lasted over 1000 hours. If you do a lot of water crossings the boots with booties are easier to dry out. Currently I'm riding with Crossfire 3 TA's and my only gripe is the rubber hinge on the inside of the ankle gets caught on my frame (square yz 250x frame) making it more difficult to move your feet around. Frame guards solved that though.

I have had my Gaerna's SG10's for 15 years, yea they are showing some wear and they need new sole's but I love them, I don't think you loose enough protection to cast off the boot once its time for a new sole. Tech 10’s are hands down the best boots I’ve worn. You’ll love the bootie. Washable, heaps of extra ankle support. No heel lift. And you don’t take the bootie out to put on. You insert the booties into the boot, then slide your foot in normally, Velcro the bootie tight then continue clipping the outer boot like another other one

TECH 10s: Great content Kyle- I use my boots a bit longer than you (but I don't ride nearly as much) I went from Tech8s to Fox Insticnt to Tech10s. Whole heartedly agree with your opinion on the Instinct (yes, I have a bunch of hardware in my gear bag) I used to think the inner bootie was a PITA until I got my Tech10s and learned to leave the inner bootie in the boot! Don't know if I was the only dumbass putting the bootie on first then trying to cram into the outer boot but by leaving the inner bootie in the boot, you just put your foot in like any other boot, secure the inner velcro and buckle - This inner bootie puts comfort and support on another level compared to boots without - Boot and foot are now one! You should definitely give them a try!

Nice review. I also started with Fox, also lost buckles, then AStar Tech 6, Tech 8 didn't like the bootie, SG10 (at the time they were top of the line) now on my second pair of SG12s.
The newer, wider Yamaha pegs just eat up my left sole especially, last time I actually just sent in my left boot for a resole (I send them to MX boot repair in CA, did not get a discount for one boot tho). Been thinking about the SRS for that reason, I keep 2 pairs of SG12s so I have a pair when one is off getting resoled.
SG12 is also much more comfortable than the SG10 imo.

I rode in Alpinestar Tech 8's for years and loved them. I took a break from riding (dumb I know) for about 8 years and when I came back I went with Alpinestar Tech 7 Enduros. They are hands down the worst boot I have ever had. They are very comfortable but you absolutely no feeling on the pegs, braking or shifting and the toe box is so big it is difficult to shift up. Lastly, the soles were toast in just over a year and I don't get to ride very often. I then went to Sidi Crossfire 3 TA's. These are absolutely the best boot I have ever owned, comfortable right away, great feel on pegs and brake pedal. And the soles have lasted amazingly well, boots are almost 3 years old and if it wasn't for the dirt you wouldn't know they had been on a foot peg.

What has always turned me off from the Aplinestars is the buckles. They don't all latch from the same side. That turned me off 20 years ago when I upgraded to SIdi boots, and the Aplinestars are STILL using that off buckle design.

The SG12 is not very waterproof is my only take away and why I prefer the SIDI where I ride. If it was dry all the time, then I'd be rocking the SG12s more often than my crossfire 3

I've always used Alpinestars, but changed to Fox to save $$, but BOTH brands I found the plastic shin protectors became BRITTLE (always kept in the ends of my Fox gear bag, out of direct sun), and completely broke apart like egg shells well before 10 years of use! My last pair of Fox boots still look BRAND NEW, but after a spinal injury and surgery, they sat stored for a few years, and when I got them out.....all the plastic just crumbled like egg shells!
Anyone know WHY this happens, or how to prevent it happening in future boots I buy??? Not everyone can afford new boots ($500+) every year, so I'd like to know if the plastic brittling can be prevented somehow?

I just bought a pair of the Gaerne SG 12 and I love the boots the toebox feels great, the calf area feels fantastic but my instep seams a bit tight. Will this tight feeling eventually loosen up with break-in?

    • @tassiejeeper01

My calves and ankles used to swell and then ache for days when I first got my SG12'S. (Could be my "z-frame" braces I bought at the same time too)
But I started doing up the Velcro at the top of the boot first and then did up all the straps as loose as possible then pushed them in flush.
After a handful of rides I was able to do them up a bit tighter without issue. (Great boots once broken in) but the ankles are way too tight when nrw

My sg12s fell apart so fast, the kid i bought my 22 yz450 from gave me a pair of sg12s. Said he wore the, one race. They were like brand new. I rode them this summer trail riding and they are toast. All the plastics broke. Im so bummed i loved the boots.
