This is such an important conversation, thank you for sharing. We have done a lot of work on our "black and white noodle" and even thoigh it's always lurking, it's so very important for others to know about the relief it gives. Btw, I'll be 40 years old in April. Age might play into it but mental illness is ageless. People don't know that.

My self harm didn't even get any kind of handle on why we engaged in SH until nearly age 40. I think that SH is more hidden in the adult population. It takes so, so much work to learn different coping skills. And even then, it happens again. We had to go to the ER because of blood poisining. I was shamed for it by others. And the medical staff are not empathetic. You are all doing the best you can. I believe that...we believe that.

Thank you - and I'm glad you felt you could open up here. If you ever need us feel free to send a dm on Instagram. The hidden statistic of sh in older people is awful and needs to be opened up

I’m super glad that you have support of friends that can help when it’s unclear about needing to go to emergency department(s).
Finch, thank you for addressing young folks some of the reality of self harm. Good on you. ❤️
Like some other comments, I don’t think self harm recognizes age. It’s not something you “outgrow”, it’s something to talk with therapists about and learn coping skills to use instead of self harm. Always a pleasure to listen to you ramble about your shit! 🥰

Thank you 💖 we understand it doesn't recognise age, but society definitely does haha. Older people who still struggle with self injury are driven underground with their problems and it sucks. But thank you again!! X

I think it’s great that you’re talking about this. It’s a struggle that a lot of people are too afraid to even mention, despite the fact that so many systems have at least one alter with some sort of maladaptive and/or self-injurious coping skill. Our physical protector used to be a persecutor who coped w/ SH. It was extremely hard to kick, and took a lot of therapy and a great support network. Thanks for opening up about this.

Thank you for taking the time to share this with us! And yeah, bad coping mechanisms make a lot of sense but I think by the time you even realise you have DID/OSDD they're already super ingrained which makes them almost impossible to get rid of which is so hard to deal with
