Quick Look at the Sentry Plus | ADS-B In

- This isn't an in depth review by any means, just a quick look at how it works. It offers CO and G monitoring, it'll display your groundspeed, it connects to Foreflight and provides subscription free weather and ADS-B traffic. Definitely not required but it adds another level of safety and situational awareness when flying in congested airspace.

In canada, for the most part, we don't use adsb towers. You are likely getting the traffic directly from the aircraft themselves. The towers are mostly used for weather.
Interesting, we haven't tried out the weather features yet. Next flight I guess. Lol
Great video. Sentry is a great little unit. Everyone I know that has one has it suction cupped to the door or side window for good reception. My stratus 2s pics up traffic great in the ground and the bears tower is approx 8 miles away. Love the AHRS feature.
We tried it on the side window but it blocked too much of the view.
Well, kinda looking forward to seeing that plane get that far. I think it would make for an interesting video
Can you explain your new nose gear fork? Did you have it built or order it?

It was ordered from the factory. The 21" tires are a factory upgrade which requires a larger fork.
Have you ever looked at the ilevel autopilot to connect to that ipad?
Yes, but we don't fly far enough to need an autopilot I don't think.
AHRS looked a bit screwed up at the end. My Sentry AHRS is useless. Did you find this one actually works? Any disconnect/crashing issue as well?
It seems to act a little wonky on the ground but seemed fine in flight. I've only had it up twice so far though so I'll continue my observations with it.

I know something really crazy that you can build in your cockpit, how about a magnetic compass?
While a compass is a fantastic back-up if I were ever caught out in unfamiliar terrain or over a cloud layer (neither of which are very likely to happen) I find that they just take up space and don't actually get used 99% of the time. I have 4 GPS sources on board if I ever get disoriented (which again, isn't very likely to happen as I know the area that I fly in very well). And if the entire GPS system goes down, I have maps that I can use to get home safely.

My wife Catrin and I are currently building a 701.
What shocked me in your video was that you suddenly no longer had a connection to your iPad and couldn't receive any data. When I was still living in Germany, it happened to fellow pilots that they had 3 GPSs on board and all 3 gradually failed for some reason. Fortunately, they were able to orientate themselves along the Rhine River and find their way home. I'm just a scaredy-cat and we'll probably install a steam cockpit in our 701. I wish you and Vicky all the best and always a runway in sight. I think that wish is better than “breaking a neck and a leg” as pilots in Germany wish.
@@jorgmichalowski7954 We only have one local tower providing ADS-B service in the area. It seems that if we're below 1000' AGL, service is spotty. The GPS functionality was still working just fine and we still had the option to either turn off the Sentry or select a different data stream if we wanted to see internet weather. It really isn't a big deal at all. Just a local limitation due to our geography.

With all of the instrumentation now, are you able to fly at night or in foggy conditions?
No, the aircraft is still not properly equipped for IFR or night flight.
Magnetic oil drain plug?
I'm not sure if it is or not. I imagine it should be though...

So you're more aware of other aircraft with ADSB, (perhaps commercial aircraft at higher altitudes) not so much other aircraft without ADSB. What are the requirements for use and the norms down in GA and light/ultralight sports aircraft? Might it be a bit like the trend towards cyclists wearing fluro outerwear, other vehicles on the roads are now so focussed on the fluro wearers, that they don't so much see the rest of the cyclists who aren't in high-vis clothing?
We don't count on ADS-B for traffic avoidance, it's just another tool that we can use to help with it. See and avoid is still the standard with the use of radios and position reports.
Is that janky "sentry" made from a first alert case? I would not trust my life to it.
I don't trust my life to it either. It just gives me extra info that I can use if I choose to. Not sure about 'janky' though... were you expecting it to be encrusted with gems or something...? Lol
