      @@TheTechnologyMan The watches from that website are just white labelled (i.e. rebranded) junk from Alibaba. None of the screens are animated or scrollable and the accompanying app is broken and buggy... Do not believe spruikers of such junk in the comments section of the much better watch you've reviewed here.

  • @tylovset
    @tylovset 4 роки тому +12

    Good and detailed review, but I won't upgrade my beloved Bip to the GTS, mainly because it's incredible legible always-on display in well lit environments, with no impact on battery life (transfective technology). I've heard the GTS always-on halves the battery life, and is still very poor to read outdoors. The Bip does all the important things that GTS does, and with the Notify and Fitness app you can export data, control music ++. I also like the more discrete size of the Bip.
    With the Bip and GTS, you can design your own watch faces from the ground with the right tools.
    TIP: If you own the english version (non-latin firmware) of Bip, you can install a very legible bold font called myamazfit.ru_BOLD_v4q_newsmiles.zip made by a russian guy, which includes basically all western characters, and a number of emoji's as well. You can install it independently from Bip firmware with Notify and Fitness on android or AmazTools on iOS.

    • @TheTechnologyMan
      @TheTechnologyMan  4 роки тому

      Thanks Tyge! Yes it's not a massive step up from the Bip - apart from the display. But as you say that comes at the expense of battery life. And thanks for tip!

    Hi Gidon - this was a fantastic review and I'm incredibly impressed at how thorough you've been in your investigation of its heart rate and other features.
    If I may ask, as someone who has owned a few of the Fitbit Charge devices and is looking for more of a blend of fitness tracking and a casual SmartWatch, would you recommend the GTS as a sensible alternative to a product such as the Charge 3 or Versa series?

    • @TheTechnologyMan
      @TheTechnologyMan  4 роки тому

      No problem BinaryRoberto - thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! I've not tested any of the Fitbit watches properly - but I would imagine their heart rate tracking is more accurate. I will be testing more watches hopefully very soon!

    I just got the GTS, my first Amazfit watch. Very slick Apple Watch clone but I wish there were more widgets, including hourly weather and water tracking. Sleep tracking, music controls, step counting and battery life are all great plus the watch is very light. The main downside is the app which is too complicated. It needs a Fitbit-like refresh.

    One of the worst "gadget nightmares" I've had was when I bought the Amazfit Stratos. I won't "review" that model here, bur from your excellent review it seems I'm not alone.
    The problems I have boils down to the fact (Not "In my opinion") that seems common with Amazfit; things either just don't work, they work badly, or they are too often impossible to use with anything that could be called "ease of use." Amazfit "support" is horrid; most of it makes us rely on FAQS or instructions that are clearly wrong, and often are too vague to be useful. Calls/chats/email to Amazfit for assistance is, in itself, a nightmare.
    Amazfit seems to be one of the companies who try to throw in wonderful features but, more often than not, those features fail almost across the board. Heck, just to change the screen face seems simply; Press the screen and we're told that in a few seconds the watch will shrink it's face and we can select a new face. And it works, EVENTUALLY. But again, more often then not ... nothing happens or it decides to jump into some OTHER feature. It's all random.
    Another example, one I have NOT been able to fix is GPS. For no known reason it decides I must live somewhere in a small island just northeast of Australia; I don't, I live in the U,S, and the time changes by DAYS and the only "fix" I can find is to take off the watch (which seems to be important), lay it outside for five or so min, and hope it becomes correct. But I stopped doing that because it will, in short time, pick some GPS coordinates that take me back to Australia. Or the moon; I can never tell where it thinks "we" actually live.
    Aside from the screen (Which, on the Stratos is horridly difficult to read much of the time) the product is stuffed with features that either make little sense, or do what IT feels like doing, and that seems to be "anything;" it in itself seems confused as to what function to run. And as you found, features simply don't work on Amazfit's side, and we just have to wait until they hack their servers and such in the hope it gets fixed. And again, too often, it just doesn't get fixed.
    Clearly Amazfit lacks in employing good people to develop their SW and HW; it truly seems they are more than happy with "Good enough." And their documentation is amazingly poor, so I find I (and others) have to commit to searching the web for ANYTHING that may help solve "the problem du jour'." So it was with GREAT "relief I decided to switch to Samsung -- as my wife had first suggested -- and you know what? It WORKS. And reliably at that.
    So personally, until Amazfit "gets their act together" the only way I'd use one is if they started selling them for $20 and throw in a $10 rebate (Which probably would get lost on them as well.) So, to be blunt, Do NOT buy Amazfit products. Ever. They are a company that just doesn't "bother" to do what's needed to produce a viable product. If you have to pay more, well IMHO, it is more than worth it, unless you don't mind spending hours upon hours just to "sort of" get what you bought it for.

    • @TheTechnologyMan
      @TheTechnologyMan  4 роки тому

      Sounds like you've had a bad experience - that's disappointing. I've not tried the Stratos yet .... Hope you find something that works for you.

      @@TheTechnologyMan I just rebought the watch after returning it yesterday. Notifications work but can't be compared with a wear OS watch. First off, AWESOME review, lots of details which help me to make a decision about changing my current Tick Pro watch. I love the look of the watch and its functionality, but I'm having to charge every other day. Regarding the battery life, if I only use the watch for heart monitoring and counting steps(No gps tracking needed), would you feel I would get close to 2 weeks of battery life? Second quick question, on my Tick Pro I could download many watch faces to the phone, then switch faces right on the phone, does the GTS allow me to have several or many watches that I could load from the app, then be able to switch faces from the watch itself? Thank you and regards.....

    • @TheTechnologyMan

      Thanks Emerys Muzic! I can get a couple of weeks from the GTS which is a big plus. Yes you can change watch faces via the app.

      Thank you Dominik Gruenthaler! You could have continuous heart rate tracking on the watch. But you can't broadcast your heart rate from the watch to the the app on your phone so it's included in the activity file if that's what you mean ...

    Hi,
    Thanks for such a great review.
    I have a question please regarding connecting Amazfit GTS to iPhone if anyone can help.
    Did anyone experience issues keeping the app running in background? I used to have the Huawei GT2 but whenever I swiped the app up after double clicking home button of my phone, I immediately lose the weather update as the app stop running in the background though the settings are done to continue running.
    Are you experiencing the same thing with Amazfit app?

    • @TheTechnologyMan
      @TheTechnologyMan  2 роки тому

      I've not tested enough at this price point to say - but it probably depends what you mainly want the watch for. If it's for fitness I'd try and get a cheap Garmin like the Forerunner 35 or better still a second hand 235 or similar. If it's for smartphone notifications etc watches like this Amazfit are pretty good and battery life is better than many alternatives.

      Thank you Linaa a! That's a tough one. At a very high level, the Vivoactive will be a better fitness tracker and has the whole Garmin ecosystem to support it. What would be the best smartwatch/fitness watch for someone who only cares about accurate continuous heart rate tracking throughout the day? (my doctor would like me to have one) Something that can be combined with an app to see maybe daily/weekly heart rate averages or something like that. I don't care about GPS functions or notifications from texts or calls or any other functions really. Maybe Garmin Forerunner 45s or something?
