Here Is Why You Should NEVER Trade With The Boston Celtics

  • Welcome back everybody my name is Tucker and today is another video that was sparked by a comment down below... this time by Nathaniel Morris. This is something that I have thought about doing a video on even before this comment but it did bring it to my attention again, and that is basically that if you’re an NBA franchise and the Boston Celtics call you or you call them about making a trade, just don’t do it... hang up the phone, call somebody else, don’t make the deal... because you’re going to lose. To be clear this isn’t specific to the Danny Ainge era, the Celtics in general have traded well historically, and Ainge’s early years as GM definitely have some deals in there that you could question... but I am talking about just right now, in the era in which Ainge has been the GM of the team and Brad Stevens has been the coach as well... you should NEVER, and I mean never, trade with the Boston Celtics if you’re an NBA team. I went back and looked at every deal the franchise has made since these two joined forces in Boston, which is only a thing because of the wonderful people at basketball reference without which I probably couldn’t make this video so huge shoutout to them... and I have picked out 4 specific instances of major trades that show exactly why you should never trade with the Boston Celtics.
    Trade 1: December 18, 2014: Traded Dwight Powell and Rajon Rondo to the Dallas Mavericks for Jae Crowder, Jameer Nelson, Brandan Wright, a 2016 1st round draft pick (Guerschon Yabusele was later selected) and a 2016 2nd round draft pick (Demetrius Jackson was later selected). (Boston also receives $13M trade exception.)
    Trade 2: February 19, 2015: As part of a 3-team trade, the Boston Celtics traded Marcus Thornton and a 2016 1st round draft pick (Skal Labissiere was later selected) to the Phoenix Suns; the Boston Celtics traded Tayshaun Prince to the Detroit Pistons; the Detroit Pistons traded Gigi Datome and Jonas Jerebko to the Boston Celtics; and the Phoenix Suns traded Isaiah Thomas to the Boston Celtics. (PHO 2016 1st round pick received from BOS is CLE's pick and is top-10 protected.)
    Trade 3: June 19, 2017: Traded a 2017 1st round draft pick (Markelle Fultz was later selected) to the Philadelphia 76ers for a 2017 1st round draft pick (Jayson Tatum was later selected) and a future 1st round draft pick. (Future 1st-Rd pick will either be LAL's 2018 pick if it falls between 2 & 5, or the better of PHI & SAC's 2019 picks, unless it is the #1 pick)
    Trade 4: August 30, 2017: Traded Jae Crowder, Isaiah Thomas, Ante Zizic, a 2018 1st round draft pick (Collin Sexton was later selected) and a 2020 2nd round draft pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Kyrie Irving. (2020 2nd-rd pick from BOS to CLE is MIA's pick, and was added as compensation for Isaiah Thomas's injury)

    You could have added the Avery Bradley and Marcus Morris trade in here as well. Boston created cap space to sign Hayward with this trade, and Bradley has never been the same, and has since been shipped around. Where Morris was a legit contributor to their post season run last year. And this year is probably top candidate for 6th man.

    1. The trades to get Garnett and ray Allen was incredible, they sent a bunch of future roll players for two all stars. And 2. They sent rozier for kemba Walker. 3. The good thing about brad Stevens is when he gets a point guard, he makes them gifted by running their play styles through that point guard, however not with kemba as JT has thrived into a superstar, Brad Stevens puts his players into good roles making them more valuable, but not as good for other teams.

    things people fail to recognize is the Celtics drafting and player development is real good too, not just trades. This is why in the past 14 years they’ve only missed the playoffs 1 time and it was during the beginning of a rebuild and was still competitive.

    What usually happens: Ainge trades for a decent role player who shines under Brad Stevens, and then gets traded years later when his value is way higher, but goes back to being a decent role player on his new team. This was close to the case for IT, Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder, and Kelly Olynyk. Players come in with no expectations, shine in Boston, then go to a new team and don’t show that same promise after leaving the Celtics.

It's just not fair when he has the ability to turn a frog into a prince.....and then once they decide to trade them away ...they turn back into a frog. So teams should gauge a player's ability prior to them becoming a celtic, and not after...perhaps...Ala Jay Crowder ...Yeahhh simply just avoid making deals with them like the plague lol...

    that 3rd trade is still a win considering what philly got for fultz in his trade to the magic, but lol kings didn't give them a top lottery pick, c's got the 14th. also that 4th trade isn't a win anymore. we could have had a young core of sexton, brown, tatum - all on the same timeline (within 2 years of age between each other) and all at least good starting calliber players. Would have allowed boston to go get a dominant centre to pair with a starting linuep of sexton - brown - hayward - tatum - centre that ainge pulls a trade off for, or even if ainge manages to keep horford.

    Celtics lost the Kyrie trade, if they had any other Point Guard at that level during the 2018-19 season the C’s would’ve gone 66-16 and won the championship. And in 2018 if they had a healthy superstar point guard they could’ve made the finals

  • @makgeoff
    @makgeoff 5 років тому

    It's not camoflouge & inflated value, if the other coaches & management are good assessors of talent, and they know very well what type of players can perform well within their system, and i.e. if they are aware of they are focused in playing a certain system, rather than just rely on "names" & "stars" !!!
    Crowder is doing well under Snyder in Utah as they figure out how to use him. Same as Evan Turner in Portland. IT remains to be seen but he's injured. Olynk is playing similarly & getting better in Miami. Bradley averages similarly in Detroit but after traded to Clippers he got injured. But he's playing under Rivers so hopefully he excels after recovery.

      I've been tweeting about it! If HOU really did offer 4 firsts, that is insane that they did that and that the Wolves haven't taken it yet. The last HOU pick would have to be 2025 (because they'd have to alternate) and they'd have limited protections because they can't convey to consecutive years.
      What I read was the deal was Chriss, Knight, and 4 firsts... which can't happen until October 31st (when Chriss and Knight can be traded again). I'd imagine Butler will be moved the first week in November as a result.

      No. CP3 is already up there in age and who knows how good or bad the Rockets will be in 2023 or 2025. They still lose to a healthy GS team 9 out of 10 times even with Butler. Makes much more sense to go for the 2020 title (when this GS core could potentially be broken up).

    When was the last time the celtics lost a trade? The Isaiah-Kyrie trade, while kyrie didn't work out, was still a great trade cuz IT did nothing for Cavs and the led Celtics were contenders for those two years and set up foundation for now.

    you can trade with the boston celtics as long as you know how to use the assets. the problem is most of the franchises who trade with them have issues as far as management and player development.

    You can pick 4 examples for every team if that is the case and make the same point. They had a bunch of aging "good" players that allowed them to trade for some picks, that's about it. It seems the Celtics get what they do exaggerated by everyone, example is Brad Stevens, supposedly a genius according to pundits but somehow the coaches that coach against him and have to deal with his "genius" day in and day out don't think so as he got no votes for Coach of the year.

  • @eltonvalmagtibay8682
    @eltonvalmagtibay8682 5 років тому

    Soon enough, other teams will copy Boston's system in terms of trades... When guys are getting expensive, they will let it go for a top pick and would train that pick to make another promising star, and then get expensive again, then trade for another top pick... The cycle will continue on a loop, that's why brad is he coach because aside from he's brilliance, he's so used to training new guys back on college.

      @@kohsmoger1567 they dont need a bricklayer like Mitchell. They have Jamal Murray and Gary Harris who are more efficient and fit their play style alongside Jokic.

      Mitchell is the only one who can reliably create his own shot. Yes inefficient at times but if you need buckets he can do it.

    While I agree that the BOSTON CELTICS have had success in many Drafts. There are other teams that have had success in the Drafts as well. Saying that you won't do a TRADE with another NBA TEAM for FEAR that you are GOING TO LOOSE shows lack of SCOUTING, and TEAM BUILDING on behalf other NBA TEAMS/GMs. The CELTICS have a simple formula of finding Talented players who fit their SYSTEM of TEAM DEVELOPMENT. Even with that formula its still the LUCK OF THE DRAW because you never know how players will TRANSITION in DIFFERENT TEAM SCENARIOS into THE LEAGUE. EVERY player will not play the same on EVERY TEAM and especially role players with unique skill sets.

    But Crowder left Boston and they immediately trashed Nelson and Wright, and the two draft picks have proved nothing so far, so how did the Mavs get screwed here again?
    Being the best at trading only gets them so far when they've drafted horribly the last 30 years.
