When I was a kid in Weymouth in the 1950's there was always a pannier tank running back and forward at Weymouth station, usually with a short wheelbase shunter's truck in tow. Now and then they would be used as bankers to help trains up the hill on the way to Dorchester. Thank you for posting this.
You know, the officially well-knowingly obviously obvious Thomas and Friends character known as Duck the Great Western Railway 57OO class pannier tank engine himself certainly happened to basically have been officially well-knowingly obviously based on the well-known G W R class 57OO class pannier tank engines designed by Charles Collette himself!
Most of the major city stations had a pannier tank station pilot sitting quietly in an adjacent siding, with the white feather wafting in the breeze from the brass chamber pot. That day's duty was much prized by the loco men, as they could have a long chat whilst whiling away the day, waiting for the next job, and get home for dinner that night and a cleansing ale down at the local Rubbedy Dub, without doing all that shovelling of coal and frequent cranking of the reverser and regulator, to try and coax along a very lengthy, heavy and unbraked rake of Welsh coal wagons on a wet and leaf layered line. The driver of the Auto coach was always a bit apprehensive as they approached the buffers at the end of the terminus line because he had control of the regulator, but crucially not the brake, hoping that the other driver wasn't chatting away to the fireman. Thanks for another informative video of the unsung heroes of God's Wonderful Railway and a great example of Collet's design skills, from the humble tank to the majestic king's.
@@RailsandTales-kj4jn It's a pity that 1501 was thought of as a good idea, but turned into folly. All that lurching backwards and forwards on the short wheelbase. It must have been quite tiring for the driver and especially for the fireman, having taken a shovelful of coal from the bunker and then see it miss the firebox door when she lurched at the wrong moment.
There was no 'other driver' on the loco, just the fireman. The driver in the auto coach could apply the vacuum brake just as easily as the fireman on the footplate but the fireman would have to ensure the vacuum was created to release them.
5700s were never fitted with gear for push-pull auto working. The illustration you showed was of the somewhat different 6400 class, still a pannier tank but lighter and differing in nearly every detail.
Thanks for the update Mike, the video had gone out before I realised the error, the original video started out as an outline of panniers overall before I decided to cut it down to the 5700 class. This mistake slipped through on my auto script editing
I believe one of the many stories these little engines were involved in was when one was stolen, because two men wanted to drive her. They drove her, and made it down the line quite a ways before being halted by a Signalman. Most train robberies are about stealing the trains cargo, but this train robbery was stealing the engine.
hi there, we used to have 9682 at southall railway centre i think its at the west somerset rly now.great to see one in the railway children film of 1972. but ithink the Jinties ruled the LMS
Anyone know if they will keep 5775 in it's Railway Children colours after it's overhaul or not? I really like the fictional livery and don't want them to change it.
The whole idea of the channel was to combine my interest in trains and the emerging AI tech, a lot of the content uses AI as my assistant almost :) it’s pretty fun to do, but the voice does have some little quirks :)
Hello There I needed to know why they don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock and that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers. A Stock Trains and also having 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it more Larger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Railway tunnel into a High-Speed Railway lines? Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly Line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street can they also make another brand new underground train station in Chingford and could they extend the Piccadilly Line and the DLR right up to Chingford? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and can they order Every 37 Octagon and Every 17 Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 142MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 142MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units, can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!!!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 17 Tonnes for all of those 142MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are told!!!! And please do something about these very very important Professional ideas Please? I love how they look, such a unique little tank engine design!
I have to say the great western has some great designs, which always seem well proportioned

Glad you enjoyed it Ken, i love a little pannier, often overlooked as their larger cousins take the limelight

We named ours Duck after the Rev Awdry character.
I’ve got one on the layout, little suburban rakes with one coach and some trucks

Wouldn’t quite be the first time someone mixed up a 64xx for a 57xx. I can imagine a Writer bickering with a painter right now.

For anyone whose read "The Railway Children", they were engine burglars!
No model railway is complete without one. I run mine with an autocoach or a few cattle trucks.

Could you do a video about the 1400s?
I will add them to the list :)
The great Western way is to do work without fuss
Why didn't someone tell production the right way to say wheel arrangements??
