Yeah, the general 'rule' is to shoot from the hip around 50% the expected value. For auctionable items this drops a bit... but not down to 25%. He must have had some sort of read on the guy thinking he'd take much less... or maybe he didn't want to fiddle with it for anything less than a nice big payday. Either way, I think the guy should have kept it.
I think the Royal Society or some place in England would've paid him the full 20,000 for it. I mean for god's sake it has Newton's handwriting in the inside cover.

It is in great condition. It was restored in the 1700s, but being that intact with the original bookmark folds is incredible... And even having a restoration that old hold up shows it was treasured for a long time. And now it's in a pawn shop. Unless none of this is real... Can anyone in Las Vegas go check and see how many museum quality pieces are in their shop?
