Great video Vinny.Absolutely loved it.I got 8 of these plants grown from seeds.About one year old. This video gave me lot of ideas.Thank you very much.Looking forward for updates in the future
I just wanted to say thank you for this series of videos! I have grown a ficus religiosa from seed under grow lights (northern England, not so warm) but it took a long time to start growing well. Now I feel more confident about starting a second plant from a cutting. Great videos, your clear explanations of each step with accompanying links in the description have been so helpful.
Hi Andy, so glad to know that. You might find my playlists also very helpful. I keep updating them. For growing Ficus Religiosa in cold weather, watch Canadian Nigel Saunders's channel called Bonsai Zone. I am also a big fan of British Peter Chan's channel called Heron's Bonsai. My blog has links to more resources. All the best in your bonsai adventure :-) 👍
Thank you! A friend just offered me some ficus cuttings and I want to take the very best care with them. So far my Philodenron and Clematis ivies are growing well as is my sansevieria trifasciata now at 2 feet tall with 3 pups.
Hi Vinny, just found you channel and am enjoying all the experimentation you are doing with the Ficus cuttings. i do pretty much the same thing with Jade plants but now after watching this video I know I want to try the Ficus. I also am going to subscribe to your channel and watch your other videos.
Thanks Lyle. Am glad people are liking my experiments and bonsai journey. My whole purpose is to get more people to try their hand at this and smash the fear, mystery and excuses that stops people from even getting started, like it did for me, for 2 decades ! And since I am not formally educated in this art, I am a clean slate. I have no rules to follow. I absorb lot of info from the more experienced veterans out there, whether its bonsai or gardening and also have fun at it with my own experiments, at the same time, challenging some ideas strongly. I am doing it for the sheer pleasure of it and this hobby has a therapeutic value, unlike other art forms I have dabbled in. And I will be the first to confess that I have killed / lost more plants than the 50+ specimens I have currently. Not going to let some dead plants stop me :-)
I love this..I had been trying to get small peepal trees from buildings etc..but it always died very soon..very happy to know the roots can be grown like this..thanks for sharing...
Glad to hear that suchita :-) You can collect peepal, even thick trunks, by making a clean cut with a knife or hacksaw blade and planting it into filtered sand, with fine dust removed. And use vertical pots for cuttings, not shallow - a used bottle, with its neck cut off is best. Here is my story of such a cutting - ua-cam.com/video/DC7XPPtlf4s/v-deo.html. the links to its previous parts are in the description.
Thanks Brian :-) one more of that ficus germinated in one of my pots on its own. it must have come with the collected soil & is a few months old now. i am just letting it grow. maybe a year later i might get an interesting story to tell.
Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil - Wow! It seems so easy for you in Hyderabad. I'm in Toronto and ficus religiosa is hard to come by, except as an indoor plant. I will be growing from seed. Continue the good work, I am enjoying your videos and just subscribed!
+S Brian Chong ... i am learning from the ficus guru in Canada - Nigel Saunders. Surely, you know him. Sometimes, i am confused why i cannot get the growth that he is getting, despite him being in a cold country 😇. On the other hand, many of my fellow citizens here tried my water rooting tricks and surprisingly could not get good results, despite being in a similar climate and having the same species. Life is full of ironies.
Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil - Haha, yeah, I watch Nigel Saunders, too! He is about an hour's drive from where I live :P Maybe others are not getting the same results because they are not patient enough? I propagated some willow cuttings and I thought they were dead, but finally they started rooting after what seemed like a really long time!
Amazing! I only just pruned my f. Religiosa and put some of the cutting in water to conserve then found your video. I'll leave them there and see how the behave. I live in a northern hemisphere country and we are now in Winter with temperatures between 6°C to -8°C outside but inside it's mostly 21°C. I might try your suggestion about getting a special kit with lighting as this might help. Thanks so much. One question though if I may, what do you use to cement the rocks together? I like the way you present them. I would like to try that too. Thanks for the very informative and well documented video.
Thanks Vendrice Garvin :-) Winters might give very slow growth rate even with optimal conditions. I consider Nigel Saunders of Canada as the ficus expert in a cold country :-) I used a plumber's epoxy hardening compound for sticking the rocks together. In the video i published today, the same rock has been shown and i have explained the construction too. Hope you find it useful.
Nice video bro , perfect information I like to grow ficus . r tree but I can't buy it but now I am growing many ficus trees in pots, water etc...I really thank you😃😃😃
Sanjay, i am glad to know you found it useful. I added English subtitles yesterday, since many complained about the background music making my talk difficult to understand.
Hi Aldo, the green cuttings rarely rot but the brown ones usually do. Hence, for the brown cuttings i prefer a solid medium like sand or cocopeat. they can be still rooted in water. you just have to change the water daily, unlike every 3 days for the green cuttings. sometimes, i see a jelly like substance on the brown trunk and gently clean it off with my finger or a old toothbrush. its a sign of rot. in some cases, i managed to root them but in other, no. Begin with thin green cuttings.
Great channel! I am a bit of an obsessive plant propogator and love all of your experimentation. I don't know if you have any stinging nettles (urtica diotica)where you live but if you put a bunch of them in a bucket of water for about a week you can use the water as plant fertilizer. It would be interesting to see if it would work well for hydroponics!
Thanks Kjae Re, i am glad you liked my crazy experiments :-) I do not have that plant. For now, i use liquid NPK for both hydroponics and soil based plants. The hydro plants are definitely malnourished in other nutrients but the soil plants are being given organic fertilizers additionally. So, i hope they are a bit better. From where do you manage the soil suitable for your cuttings? I have tried many cuttings but it starts rotting and eventually dies. I changed the soil but still no recovery.

I really love to watch your videos, I have young bonsai plant , bought a month before , it suddenly started dying, can't find bonsai special soil mix here in Mumbai, please suggest
Hi Puja, thank you. If i can look at a picture or video of your tree and the bottom view of the pot, then i can get a clearer idea. What tree is it ? Most probably, the roots are not getting enough oxygen due to bad soil /pot design. You can prepare a mix with 1 part soil, 1 part filtered sand, 1 part compost / cowdung. Have plenty of drainage holes. Use an app like FilmoraGo or Viva Video to make short videos of your pics and you can easily upload to youtube and post a link here. If you do not want the video to be visible publicly on your channel, you can set it as Unlisted. Then, only people with the link can see it. You can change the video setting to private after you get a reply.
+Puja Jha i think your tree is dying. and i suspect oxygen deficiency. please remove it from the current pot and use a plastic pot with lot of drainage holes or even a plastic colander. use fresh soil mixed with equal parts of filtered sand. if sand is not available, use small crushed brick pieces (filtered) or cow manure or compost. if you are using a colander use a paper roll to protect its outer edge from wind. keep the plant in shade for 2 weeks. do not fertilize. hopefully it should recover. and keep the new pot on a tray of sand.
Hi Karthikeyan, I am rooting the green stem cuttings of peepal tree in water. Yes, you can root banyan tree too this way but it takes longer time - ua-cam.com/video/NVmFq-eqLwc/v-deo.html. Don't forget to read the info in description.
My average water rooting time is 2 weeks, for it to start. Then i keep pruning the roots for another 4 weeks, in water, to multiply its density. I live in central India. If you live in a cold country, expect double the time and less spectacular results, unless you can control temperature and humidity artificially in a grow room or box.
Just ordinary tap water, muncipality supplied. After you go thru some of my other videos and my answers to comments below them, you will realize there is no secret :-) The magic is in the ficus species, if there is magic.
Hi Avnish, i use filtered sand, collected from a dried up stream. you can also use the extra sand, leftover at construction sites. just wash them nicely few times, they could have cement dust which is a problem. in my early days, once i had collected discarded sand from roadside, which was polluted with cement powder, leading to disastrous results. so, avoid discarded sand on the roadside.
hi vinny ,i am regularly watching your videos and i have seen your appreciation comments on my videos but once i want to give reply it will always failed .......i dont know what is the reason.....
Hi Gajanan, if you search water bonsai on youtube, you will find those videos. thats what inspired me to try it too. the person calls it powder grower and mixes it into water but the ingredients are a secret. My strong suspicion is that it is a water soluble NPK fertilizer and might even have some water soluble micro nutrients. It has to be that only. There is no magical powder. In fact, if you buy 1 bottle of hydroponic macro fertlizer amd 1 bottle of micro fertilizer, it might even be better than that. I plan to buy them sometime. my NPK granules are not the water soluble type, although they do dissolve to some extent :-)
We will never know since he keeps it a secret and we cannot buy his powder grower online to test the ingredients. But hydroponic nutrients can be bought online and you can actually enquire about them with someone in your city who grows vegetables in cocopeat medium (usually terrace garden). They use hydroponic fertilizers.
Actually I inspired from you and grown ficus Benjamin cutting in water, I want to show you .... as you did I cut its roots 4 times within a month and got dense roots, yesterday I potted it ... thanks
Hi Loknath, you can root the cutting in soil also and I have done it too. If the stem of the cutting is green, then rooting is easier in water and gives total control over root shape, unlike soil. If the stem is brown, then soil or sand is better because in water, it might rot, unless you take extra care. But why take cuttings and then grow roots ? It is so much easier & smarter to do air layering - you will get rooted cuttings, while still attached to parent plant. Even a beginner can get higher success rate compared to rooting in soil. Check this link - instantbonsaiforeveryone.blogspot.in/search/label/air%20layering
Hello today i have propagate many small cut ficus religiosa in water ,but unfortunately due to lack of knowledge i have cut off all the leaves ,will the roots grow?
Sorry, i could not understand the context. Are you referring to this video or another one ? Could you mention the timestamp so i can understand better ?
@@spazzychalk ... ok now i get it. after pruning branches with a small scissor, i select a few for rooting from the waste. i look for branch tips with a growing bud and try to include 1 leaf while discarding the rest. have a look at the links given in description and this - ua-cam.com/video/GCbZ396u04M/v-deo.html. hope that helps. you can also use air-layering technique, shown in my playlists.
@@spazzychalk ... you can do it but you wont get a plant from it, only a rooted leaf, which eventually will die. Its a nice experiment and you can root it in water or soil but if you want to grow a plant then you need a part of the stem also. Rooted leaf - ua-cam.com/video/sMx20lhgAO4/v-deo.html (check its description for why a tree cannot be cloned this way)
If you feed the plant hydroponic macro & micro nutrients, then I guess it will last a long time, maybe years. I don't know for sure. Since, I don't have the nutrients I move them into my bonsai soil mix at the earliest, which has soil & cow manure too. But by this time, the leaves start looking yellow & malnourished. I am still experimenting with dissolved NPK fertilizer in water to tide over the water rooting phase. This cutting has been in water for 2 months now and is an experiment to see how long can it survive like this - instantbonsaiforeveryone.blogspot.in/2016/07/ficus-religiosa-growing-in-bottle-of.html
+Vinny Chirayil Hi. I wanted to thank you for everything, and also ask you another question. I know that it is easy for you to find several types of ficus, as of me I can not find where I live the ficus banyan. I am very interested in having more ficus religious and ficus banyan. My question is, could you help me? If so, what is the cost for sending it. Could you replay back at my Gmail. Zafiro19862005@gmail.
Hi,I love this Chanel , and your videos, and I have a question about the water bonsai!! I wan to make a water bonsai tree and I want to know if I can make them of any trees species or just a few species!!! Thanks you for the information!!!!
I have tried with ficus mainly & got good results. Search for water bonsai on youtube to find more examples. If your plant is in a pot with a perforated base & kept above a water container, many species will happily dip their roots in them & grow
Can I ask what you do with all the plants that you propagate? I too love propagating plants but then I get overwhelmed with them all. I sometimes give away some but am seriously thinking about selling them on my next-door neighbor app.
When i started this hobby, excess quantity ensured that i will have some success at least, despite guaranteed failures. Once i tasted success it became an addiction & a confidence booster. But soon i realized that many of these specimens had no potential for bonsai and threw them away. Selling them would need additional time & work from my side which i wasn't ready for. Besides, i didn't think my propagated plants would fetch anything. You can try selling them & check the demand in your area. For propagation in general & starting good bonsai material, air layered cuttings are unbeatable. Seeds are a waste of time, specially for bonsai & the wrong way to go about it. Have a look at my playlists. Thats the true value of this channel. Also, i hope you are reading the video descriptions. Lots of info there. Air layering - ua-cam.com/play/PLiDU6YjzHzNdz5i1lw5RPLF8qpNVLzmHZ.html Surface roots - ua-cam.com/play/PLiDU6YjzHzNdN3FEPsqGefuh18vxUOVWf.html Note - Japanese bonsai is overrated & is an American hype. I consider Indonesian & Vietnamese bonsai as superior & more difficult to achieve. Japan would be no.2 for me. Europe could be no. 3.
Hello Mr. Vinny I just now found your video.I also want to grow peepal from a cutting. I find small plants growing in crevices. Can I cut it from there? Can you share a video of how to get cutting and from where? Thanks
Hi Ranjana, please have a look at the links in the description. Yes, you can pluck out peepal from their growing places, if the stem is thin. If it is as thick as a pencil, take a knife or hacksaw blade and cut it as close to ground /surface as possible and then grow it as a cutting. I have one such story - ua-cam.com/video/DC7XPPtlf4s/v-deo.html (check description links also). Best place to get good peepal specimens is from road dividers & old buildings :-)
+Ranjana Gajjar ... yes, you can cut them and grow as a cutting, as i have done here - ua-cam.com/video/-JL3bkBUCMo/v-deo.html (3:20). You can see the entire progression of it in the subsequent part links.
Hi Murugesh, I don't know, as these trees are new to me. Try air-layering a few branches and also taking few cuttings. Hopefully this link might help you - homeguides.sfgate.com/hass-avocado-propagation-drawbacks-64203.html
Hi Vinny. Just made my first 2 cuttings on my 5 ft. tall Ficus. The plant is bleeding white liquid. Is that ok.? Should I put something on the cuts ? I have made may cuttings from tomatoes, and other plants, but never saw this. What to do? Your Ficus are doing so well, thought you might know. Have a great day, sir ! :-)
Hi Robert, ficus cuttings do leak white fluid and it is normal. Some people may be allergic to it in case of skin contact. I am not. What species of ficus is it ? I hope you have read my description and seen the 1st part description too. Thin green stem cuttings, specially the tips are more suitable for water rooting, while the thicker cuttings are better off in a solid substrate. Trying to root the thicker cuttings in water is possible but is very high maintenance process and water has to be changed daily, else the wood starts to decay and you will see a transparent jelly form at the base as a symptom. Your rooting time & success can vary due to climate, water PH, etc. All the best and feel free to post your results here :-) Have a look at this playlist also - ua-cam.com/play/PLiDU6YjzHzNcyTQTMJLanD2K-VWdi0srw.html&disable_polymer=true
Can we create a peepal tree from a stem cut from a tree, not from a sprouting tree baby as in your case. I brought a leave cut from the tree such that I have a small stem with it.. been three days in water n it looks like I am drooping the leaves.. no root formation yet
Thanks, i am just a regular guy who thinks bonsai can be done faster and easily by lot more people. do read my colander vs bonsai pot article on my blog.
Hi vinny.ur work is really very impressive. I have a query. Can we take big cuttings of peepal for rooting. So that it will develop fast in a bonsai????
Thanks Manojkumar :-) Yes, big cuttings can be rooted in filtered sand or cocopeat medium, after discarding the fine dust. But an even better option is to take air-layered cuttings - instantbonsaiforeveryone.blogspot.in/2016/06/double-air-layering-on-same-trunk.html. The roots will develop faster and more densely while the desired cutting is still attached to parent tree. For big cuttings, you can use 2 halves of a pot or a colander.
Mature peepal tree bark is whitish grey while a brown trunk indicates a younger tree. So, right away you can bypass the brown trunk/branches and go for white bark instead. If the tree is near you, i would suggest developing branch ramification on the desired section. Developing roots should be the last operation, bcos it is the easiest. So, the first few months or a year can be dedicated to getting branch structure on the target section thru repeated pruning and wiring. Once you are almost happy with it, start the air layering and cut it in 1 or 2 months time.
Hi Sikander, have a look at this video - ua-cam.com/video/NVmFq-eqLwc/v-deo.html. If you want to make bonsai with it, then I do not recommend it. It grows very slowly and the leaves are too large, and new branches are too thick. If you still want to have it, then i recommend air layering a thick branch with some side branches, from an adult tree. thats a faster method than starting from seeds or thin cuttings.
You can do it, if the stem is not woody, else planting into filtered sand is better. The following 2 videos show successful water rooting of young plants plucked from soil : ua-cam.com/video/zBUs3GH26Wo/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/CafuFISsrtk/v-deo.html
Hi Bony Konsam, have you seen the links in the description ? I have explained it in one of them. The best technique for plant propagation, specially for beginners is air layering since it has a very succeess rate - ua-cam.com/play/PLiDU6YjzHzNdz5i1lw5RPLF8qpNVLzmHZ.html and read this also - instantbonsaiforeveryone.blogspot.in/search/label/air%20layering
i made liquid fer 2 spoon each of NPK,N TAP in 2500ml bottle I applied 2 drops of frt in a small glass ,planted religosia .none survived.now i have money plant in 6 litt bottle .how much frt should b added n after how many days water b changed.thanx
i hope you are not adding fertilizer before root formation. In the description, i have shown a video of how i take cuttings and put them in water. change the water every 2-3 days and in 2 weeks time you should get roots. at that stage you can move them to soil or let them continue in water. in water, feed only diluted fertilizer. in soil, dont fertilize for a month.
Hi Sikander, in humid climates or rainy season, if you keep the bottle cap closed, excess humidity inside can enourage fungus or mold to grow on the cuttings. Only in summer, i keep the lid closed for extra humidity, else the top is always open. After a few experiments, you will know whether open is better or closed. Thanks for watching :-)
Sorry to hear that. Please try again. I hope you tried with ficus cuttings. My water rooting success is restricted to ficus cuttings only, so far. The bottom cut of the stem should be just below a leaf node. I ensure that at least 2 leaf nodes are below water. Maybe this video can give more clarity - ua-cam.com/video/lqsXW6mwZNs/v-deo.html
+erererer5 That should help, specially if you live in a cold country. And some extra humidity is also nice - by spraying water and keeping the cuttings covered with a plastic bottle's top half. I prefer to leave the cap area open. Try it and let me know how it goes. If you can share your setup pics when you start, I can recommend improvements, if any.
Sir please tell me what temperature or climate or season it need to grow? Can I propogate in water during summer? I tried snake plant in water it didn't grew
Hi Bulbul, spring and monsoon are good months but even now in summer, ficus cuttings can root if you provide good care, shade and humidity by spraying water often. I dont have any experience with snake plant unfortunately.
Hi Swapna, i got successful results with 3 ficus species - peepal tree, banyan and goolar. So, other ficus species too might be ok. I have my doubts about non-ficus species but I have not tried. Interestingly, many in India have told me that they could not get my results with peepal, despite similar climate. I too am surprised by this and have clarified many times that i am not using any secret ingredient. There is no magic here :-) I encourage you to try some experiments and record them as a video or pic slideshow. If successful, i am sure there will be lot of people interested in it.
hi vinay sir, I am inspired by ur experiments, and I,ve also tried this method, but the stem I've are from large tree that are newly sprouted but little bit thick and green , could i'll be successfull don't know ,im in doubt reg stem thickness, pls reply
Hi Satnam, green stem will root in water easily. I updated the description just now. Please go through it again. Thanks for watching. You can post links of your rooting experiments here if you want :-)
These plants need sunlight exposure daily for few hours at least. All my plants are outdoors, on 2 balconies. If you are planning to keep indoors, keep it next to a window. Few days without sun is ok but beyond that, the plants health will slowly suffer. I bring in some plants temporarily, for example if a guest is coming. But the plants are put back outside the next day.
these trees are majestic... if the area is short on water in the ground these trees are rain harvesting trees... the sheer size they go into becoming if they are allowed to grow. plus banyan and other large species of tropical trees like kapok that are specially found in tropical rain forests...
English subtitles have now been added for this video. Many had complained about the background music making my talk difficult to understand. The issue has been addressed in the description.
Growing sweet potatoes in water is fun! Wiki says: "Cuttings of sweet potato vine, either edible or ornamental cultivars, will rapidly form roots in water and will grow in it, indefinitely, in good lighting with a steady supply of nutrients. For this reason, sweet potato vine is ideal for use in home aquariums, trailing out of the water with its roots submerged, as its rapid growth is fueled by toxic ammonia and nitrates, a waste product of aquatic life, which it removes from the water. This improves the living conditions for fish, which also find refuge in the vast root systems." Hmm. actually, I think I have heard of a Ficus elastica growing in a pot above an aquarium. Some aerial roots allowed into the water suck up impurities and help clean water!
Thanks for the info. I didn't get notification for this comment. Sorry for late reply. English subtitles have now been added for this video. Many had complained about the background music making my talk difficult to understand. The issue has been addressed in the description.
Hi Ashok, sorry to hear that. Without knowing the details of how you tried rooting and for what species, it is difficult to know what went wrong. If you have some pics or video of your setup, you can post it here. If the parent tree is easily accessible to you, i suggest air-layering technique. That is far better than taking cuttings and then trying to root them. But if that is not an option for you, then i recommend filtered cocopeat or sand as a rooting medium for thick cuttings and water for thin green stem cuttings of peepal.
Ya, that tree is not accessible so air laying can not be done. so far I have not chosen the green thin stem instead they are little brown (not toooo old) but not green stems. Could that be the problem? I tried with water and straight into soil (with rooting hormone)
+Ashok As mentioned in the description of this video, brown stems are better rooted in a solid medium as they tend to rot in water, unless extreme care is even. Make sure that at least 2 leaf nodes are buried and use a tall container, like a plastic bottle with its top cut off. Shallow containers will have excess water and damage cuttings. Whatever medium you use, make sure that the fine particles removed with a sieve. The medium should be moist, not wet. This is more crucial for cuttings trying to root than seedlings growing naturally in wet or dry mediums.
+Ashok i would also make many drainage holes on the bottom of the container and ensure that it is buried at least few centimeters in a tray of sand, to draw out excess water from it. air layering for trees located far from you - instantbonsaiforeveryone.blogspot.in/2016/07/air-layering-on-big-cluster-fig-tree-on.html
I live in Hyderabad. Peepal grows well all across India, except maybe the nothern colder regions. The species love high moisture environment and hence, do better in southern India.
Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil sir i live in New Delhi, winters will be coming, I'm really afraid, what precautions should o take on winters? And please tell how much sun light does peepal plant need?
Nice experiment n explanation sir, so you mean to say cutting should have leaves for better growth? And you kept roots alone in water what was the result of that sir? With your inspiration yesterday I bought a plant which has very thick n lengthy root and 5 branches, but the plant is less than 2 feet, 1. wanted to cut the root to make it as bonsai 2. Also wanted to propagate cuttings by putting in small caps with dual system like u said. Wish me luck sir, by the way I am from Nellore and hope the weather supports me in this
Hi Chandrika, there is a video in the description where i show how i take ficus cuttings. Thats answers your first 2 questions. After that, i highly recommend watching this playlist - ua-cam.com/play/PLiDU6YjzHzNdz5i1lw5RPLF8qpNVLzmHZ.html All the best !
I no longer recommend seeds & cuttings for bonsai or plant propagation. 3 good ways to start : 1) collect the plant from nature 2) take air layered cuttings 3) buy plants from regular nurseries & train them. The first 2 are free. Last is cheap.
Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil thank you for replying sir, I hv already seen the playlist it’s about air layering. I only hv option of cutting propagation or buy from nursery but I like to watch n observing propagation so obviously nursery is not an option anymore here.😊 I was asking in your video there is only root cutting no branches at all, u were experimenting placing in water, what was the outcome sir
@@chandrikapesala ... If you are talking about the one at 3:39, they sprouted new leaves but eventually died bcos of my neglect. Today Aug 30 I started 3 cuttings from a ficus that someone gave me. I do not know what type it is as she had bought it at a Walmart store a few years back. so now we will wait and see.
Thats great ! You can expect to see a roots in 10-15 days if the cutting is green. What medium are you rooting it in ? If you have multiple cuttings, then you could try some cuttings with rooting hormone and some without, just to see the difference. Just a thought.
Right now I am just trying water. I am going to go down to a local nursery in town and see what kind of ficus they carry and buy one. That way I know the type.
+Lyle Z Right now I just have plans to root in water like you do. Then I will try planting some in thr bonsai soil I made up. Then I have some good potting soil, and then a mix of the bonsai soil and the potting soil. So I have lots of ways to experiment.
Vinnyji ap sach mein divine ho, ap k hattho mein jadu hai. i have tried planting but never succeded , u have something special in ur hands might b love affection which creates magic, pls reply
Thank you Siddharth :-) I thought this is something anybody can do bcos its just water but i was wrong. Many have told me they could not replicate it. I really dont know why. there is no secret from my side. just tap water, green stems of ficus, indirect light + humidity

Hi Chabane Sido, the money plant you see behind me had normal sized leaves and was growing in a large pot (now given away). From what i understand, the leaf size differs from variety to variety. Also, allowing the plant to grow in ground and climb a tree or wall helps in increasing the leaf size. Large leaves are also common with more mature specimens. If possible, take a cutting or air layered cutting of a plant already having large leaves. This link sheds more light - www.dendroboard.com/forum/plants/33189-how-do-i-get-big-pothos-leaves.html
i ve some video here in youtube like(How to get Big Leaves in Money Plant) you can check it but it was in hindi so i cant understand wht she did , would u check it and tell me thx broth
+chabane sido I saw the video you were referring to - ua-cam.com/video/5HYEK0H_GpY/v-deo.html She dissolves water soluble NPK fertilizer in water and feeds it to the roots and also sprays on leaves for foliar feeding,on both sides of the leaves. She dissolves 1 pinch of NPK powder in half liter of water for foliar spray and applies it every 3rd day. Once a month, she also dissolves 1 teaspoon of epsom salt in 1 liter of water and sprays on the leaves. She recommends spraying NPK on the moss stick too so roots can absorb it from there. For root application, she prepared 1 liter of liquid organic fertilizer (mix of cow manure, neem cakes and mustard cakes) and mixed it into 10 liters of water and poured it on the soil. This is done every 10 days, so 3 times a month. She also fed the roots liquid NPK every 15 days. Basically, you need to fertilize both the roots and the leaves regularly to increase leaf size, according to her.
Even some others wanted the directions in english and she did respond in comments. So i suggest you go thru all comments of her videos and see if it is covered. else you can post your request there.
Now i get what you were saying. That tree's growth had become stunted and is now a water bonsai. But i will work on your idea in the coming months. Thanks a lot Michael 👍:-)
The tiniest rooted cutting of a ficus religiosa you will ever see ! instantbonsaiforeveryone.blogspot.in/2016/08/rooting-in-water-for-mini-bonsai-ficus.html
Hi Syed, saw your comment today only. Did not get any notification. I experimented with Hindi for a few videos and then decided to stick to English only. Dual language is not practical for me. English subtitles have now been added for this video. Many had complained about the background music making my talk difficult to understand. The issue has been addressed in the description.
Great video Vinny.Absolutely loved it.I got 8 of these plants grown from seeds.About one year old. This video gave me lot of ideas.Thank you very much.Looking forward for updates in the future
Thanks. With water rooting, you will never need a seed again :-)
You are making & " showing " miracles ... Your experiments are lovely, inspiring :) thanks
Thanks Ashok :-) Nothing miraculous, just simple experiments. I am glad you found it useful.
This video is great ! Thanks for sharing so many details, am encouraged and will definitely try this now! fingers crossed

Very smart idea to start rooting sistrum !
Hi. Thank you for sharing.
I love bodhi tree
Good work sir
Great video and great explanation! I especially enjoyed seeing the ficus religiosa that you grew from seed :)
He is about an hour's drive from where I live :P
Maybe others are not getting the same results because they are not patient enough?
Hope you find it useful.
ok great I know the adhesive. I'll get some. Yes I've seen Nigel's video too. Thanks again bhai.
Nice video bro , perfect information I like to grow ficus . r tree but I can't buy it but now I am growing many ficus trees in pots, water etc...I really thank you😃😃😃
Sanjay, i am glad to know you found it useful. I added English subtitles yesterday, since many complained about the background music making my talk difficult to understand.
i appreciate your effort
thanks :-)
Amazing experiments.. really creative 👌🏼
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍god job brooo
thanks :-)
VERY GOOD VIDEO. CHEERS
Hi Vinny,
How do you prevent the rotting of the cuts before they get roots?
Hi Aldo, the green cuttings rarely rot but the brown ones usually do. Hence, for the brown cuttings i prefer a solid medium like sand or cocopeat. they can be still rooted in water. you just have to change the water daily, unlike every 3 days for the green cuttings. sometimes, i see a jelly like substance on the brown trunk and gently clean it off with my finger or a old toothbrush. its a sign of rot. in some cases, i managed to root them but in other, no. Begin with thin green cuttings.
This video of me taking fresh cuttings might help you. They all rooted - ua-cam.com/video/lqsXW6mwZNs/v-deo.html
+Vinny Chirayil thanks! 😀
Best way to propagate plants quickly & with a good radial root structure - ua-cam.com/play/PLiDU6YjzHzNdz5i1lw5RPLF8qpNVLzmHZ.html. You can also look up some of my other playlists.
From where do you manage the soil suitable for your cuttings? I have tried many cuttings but it starts rotting and eventually dies. I changed the soil but still no recovery.
Keep cuttings in tall containers (not shallow) of sand (with fine dust filtered away) & ensure humidity in a shaded area
Cuttings are tricky and need higher skill level for success. Air layering is a far superior & easier method - ua-cam.com/play/PLiDU6YjzHzNdz5i1lw5RPLF8qpNVLzmHZ.html
thanks for sharing!
You can change the video setting to private after you get a reply.
it's orange bonsai
+Puja Jha i think your tree is dying. and i suspect oxygen deficiency. please remove it from the current pot and use a plastic pot with lot of drainage holes or even a plastic colander. use fresh soil mixed with equal parts of filtered sand. if sand is not available, use small crushed brick pieces (filtered) or cow manure or compost. if you are using a colander use a paper roll to protect its outer edge from wind. keep the plant in shade for 2 weeks. do not fertilize. hopefully it should recover. and keep the new pot on a tray of sand.

Hi Puja, how is your ornage bonsai tree now ? Any improvement ?
Its really amazing.
thanks. hope you too try this and experience the results first hand. spread the knowledge.
Your have a very good attitude of sharing your knowledge. can you share your knowledge on vasi yoga
+Ahmed Khader no clue on it :-)
Its good sir,,,explanation is nice,,,,
what exactly you are doing ? you are cutting the small branch and keeping that in water?.... can I try similar way with banyan tree? please reply
Hi Karthikeyan, I am rooting the green stem cuttings of peepal tree in water. Yes, you can root banyan tree too this way but it takes longer time - ua-cam.com/video/NVmFq-eqLwc/v-deo.html. Don't forget to read the info in description.
Very nice work
What months did the root and how long it take ?
instantbonsaiforeveryone.blogspot.in/2016/05/rooting-cuttings-in-water-ficus.html#more
My average water rooting time is 2 weeks, for it to start. Then i keep pruning the roots for another 4 weeks, in water, to multiply its density. I live in central India. If you live in a cold country, expect double the time and less spectacular results, unless you can control temperature and humidity artificially in a grow room or box.
Very nice
Hi, that looks good. What liquid do you use yo induce the roots
Just ordinary tap water, muncipality supplied. After you go thru some of my other videos and my answers to comments below them, you will realize there is no secret :-) The magic is in the ficus species, if there is magic.
Thank you very much
What kind of sand are you using?
Hi Avnish, i use filtered sand, collected from a dried up stream. you can also use the extra sand, leftover at construction sites. just wash them nicely few times, they could have cement dust which is a problem. in my early days, once i had collected discarded sand from roadside, which was polluted with cement powder, leading to disastrous results. so, avoid discarded sand on the roadside.
hi vinny ,i am regularly watching your videos and i have seen your appreciation comments on my videos but once i want to give reply it will always failed .......i dont know what is the reason.....
maybe get the latest app. that might help. even i have some app problems.
Hi ... I read somewhere on internet about water bonsai growing powder ... do you have any idea?
Is it Gibralic acid?
We will never know since he keeps it a secret and we cannot buy his powder grower online to test the ingredients. But hydroponic nutrients can be bought online and you can actually enquire about them with someone in your city who grows vegetables in cocopeat medium (usually terrace garden). They use hydroponic fertilizers.
Actually I inspired from you and grown ficus Benjamin cutting in water, I want to show you .... as you did I cut its roots 4 times within a month and got dense roots, yesterday I potted it ... thanks
Thats great, Gajanan ! Please post the link here :-)

can we grow the cutting directly in the soil? will it grow? or we need to put it in water till the roots start to grow?

How do you get the Leaf bud you showed when you were growing them from single leaf
Sorry, i could not understand the context. Are you referring to this video or another one ? Could you mention the timestamp so i can understand better ?
@@VinnyChirayil this video @ 2:30, how do I pluck the leaf and still get the Leaf bud
@@VinnyChirayil so there is no way to do it by plucking the leaf without cutting the branch on ficus religiosa?
@@spazzychalk ... you can do it but you wont get a plant from it, only a rooted leaf, which eventually will die. Its a nice experiment and you can root it in water or soil but if you want to grow a plant then you need a part of the stem also.

greetings, I want to ask a question,,, the ficus religious can live a long time in water? how long and if you use some method,,
If you feed the plant hydroponic macro & micro nutrients, then I guess it will last a long time, maybe years.

Note - Japanese bonsai is overrated & is an American hype.
Yes those are best places but it is deep rooted there and can't pull them with roots. So is it OK to cut from them(without roots)
+Ranjana Gajjar ... yes, you can cut them and grow as a cutting, as i have done here - ua-cam.com/video/-JL3bkBUCMo/v-deo.html (3:20). You can see the entire progression of it in the subsequent part links.
Thanks Mr Vinny.... for the prompt reply. I will update on my progress.
+Ranjana Gajjar ... All the best. feel free to post links to pics or videos of your plants here
HI Friends,
My question is possible to grow cutting with rooting hormone powder like (Nutmeg tree, Water Apple, Butter fruit tree ect .... ) trees
Hi Vinny, pls explain what is filtered sand for bonsai, as I have peepal brown stem

yes
@@VinnyChirayil thankyou 🙏🙏
Once you are almost happy with it, start the air layering and cut it in 1 or 2 months time.
do u have any video on ur experience on banyan n rubber plant.pls share
Hi Sikander, have a look at this video - ua-cam.com/video/NVmFq-eqLwc/v-deo.html. If you want to make bonsai with it, then I do not recommend it. It grows very slowly and the leaves are too large, and new branches are too thick. If you still want to have it, then i recommend air layering a thick branch with some side branches, from an adult tree. thats a faster method than starting from seeds or thin cuttings.
instantbonsaiforeveryone.blogspot.in/2015/11/banyan-tree-2.html#more
Hi Vinny, what if there is a bit of root, can i put the plant in the water?
You can do it, if the stem is not woody, else planting into filtered sand is better.
The following 2 videos show successful water rooting of young plants plucked from soil :

Hi Bony Konsam, have you seen the links in the description ? I have explained it in one of them. while covering the pot with bottle lid u used the word depending on weather .pls explain which weather we should not cover
Do you change your water ?
yes, mentioned in description
Hey Vinny i tried rooting my ficus religiosa cuttings in water but they dried up
Sorry to hear that.
Should i put my cuttings in a warm room ?
+erererer5 That should help, specially if you live in a cold country. And some extra humidity is also nice - by spraying water and keeping the cuttings covered with a plastic bottle's top half. I prefer to leave the cap area open. Try it and let me know how it goes. If you can share your setup pics when you start, I can recommend improvements, if any.
My cutting has no leaves on it except for the top, how long did it take for your cutting to root ?

Thanks for encouraging me.. Will get back as soon as I get some results

Hi Satnam, green stem will root in water easily. I updated the description just now. Please go through it again. Thanks for watching. You can post links of your rooting experiments here if you want :-)
Can we keep it indoor?
These plants need sunlight exposure daily for few hours at least. All my plants are outdoors, on 2 balconies. If you are planning to keep indoors, keep it next to a window. Few days without sun is ok but beyond that, the plants health will slowly suffer. I bring in some plants temporarily, for example if a guest is coming. But the plants are put back outside the next day.
these trees are majestic... if the area is short on water in the ground these trees are rain harvesting trees... the sheer size they go into becoming if they are allowed to grow. plus banyan and other large species of tropical trees like kapok that are specially found in tropical rain forests...
wonderful

Never measured. This video was shot in summer, which can go upto 42 degrees C
This improves the living conditions for fish, which also find refuge in the vast root systems."
Hmm. actually, I think I have heard of a Ficus elastica growing in a pot above an aquarium.
I wasted so many cuttings , none of them rooted. Any suggestions?
Hi Ashok, sorry to hear that. Without knowing the details of how you tried rooting and for what species, it is difficult to know what went wrong. If you have some pics or video of your setup, you can post it here. If the parent tree is easily accessible to you, i suggest air-layering technique. That is far better than taking cuttings and then trying to root them. But if that is not an option for you, then i recommend filtered cocopeat or sand as a rooting medium for thick cuttings and water for thin green stem cuttings of peepal.
ua-cam.com/play/PLiDU6YjzHzNcyTQTMJLanD2K-VWdi0srw.html
Sir u shud show all proses ..how did u cut stem
i have given links in description that explain it
Hey where do you live in India? Looks like the place you live in have a decent climate for peepal.
Love you broo
Is it just water?
just tap water. more info in description
Nice experiment n explanation sir, so you mean to say cutting should have leaves for better growth?
And you kept roots alone in water what was the result of that sir?
With your inspiration yesterday I bought a plant which has very thick n lengthy root and 5 branches, but the plant is less than 2 feet,
1. wanted to cut the root to make it as bonsai
After that, i highly recommend watching this playlist - ua-cam.com/play/PLiDU6YjzHzNdz5i1lw5RPLF8qpNVLzmHZ.html
All the best !
I no longer recommend seeds & cuttings for bonsai or plant propagation. 3 good ways to start :
1) collect the plant from nature
2) take air layered cuttings
3) buy plants from regular nurseries & train them.
The first 2 are free. Last is cheap.
Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil thank you for replying sir, I hv already seen the playlist it’s about air layering. I only hv option of cutting propagation or buy from nursery but I like to watch n observing propagation so obviously nursery is not an option anymore here.😊
I was asking in your video there is only root cutting no branches at all, u were experimenting placing in water, what was the outcome sir
@@chandrikapesala ... If you are talking about the one at 3:39, they sprouted new leaves but eventually died bcos of my neglect. In my experience, ficus root cuttings struggle in water, unlike stem cuttings. Root cuttings are best planted in a solid medium. Here is my most successful root cutting. These are water roots which later became air roots inside a water bottle (upper half), and now is the trunk - ua-cam.com/video/FgTnVXsHZYo/v-deo.html
Apartment Bonsai by Vinny Chirayil yes sir, that’s the one I was talking about. Thank you for your explanation .
Sir I really interested in growing bonsai .I need some tips and help from you please help me
Sure MSK, how can I help ?
Apni koto ta jol a koto ta npk melan r oi npk ta kothay pabo
Hi Anil, please translate for me. i am not able to understand.
When I saw the tree placed that way I imagine the tree falling and rooting, then up only to fall and root once more, like a Chinese water dragon at new year...General Rid Stump!!!
No need hormones ? Only pure water ?
Only ordinary tap water, changed 2-3 times a week. I do not rely on rooting hormones. I am confident that air layered cuttings will gave more roots than ordinary cuttings with the best rooting hormones - ua-cam.com/play/PLiDU6YjzHzNdz5i1lw5RPLF8qpNVLzmHZ.html
Use the rooted cuttings plant along the prostrate trunk over rock they will fuse and give you instant root structure then next season remove the lateral trunks...General Rid Stump!!!
Thank you Michael for the feedback. Could you please mention the time stamp so i know which one you are referring to. Thanks.
Supper h sir
I have never seen green bottle of fratelli
Wow
sir use npk 20 20 20 liquid 10 % water souble fertiliser for bonsai it works great
Thanks for the tip :-) Here is how I use it now - ua-cam.com/video/lSVyMqHoGbE/v-deo.html
+Lyle Z And I will probably try some rooting hormone along the way.
I hope you saw the additional videos i have linked in the description. For plant propagation, the best & easier technique - ua-cam.com/play/PLiDU6YjzHzNdz5i1lw5RPLF8qpNVLzmHZ.html
I can't believe.
thanks, i would like to know How to get Big Leaves in Money Plant, pls in english or french i dont understand hindi , big thx to all
Hi Chabane Sido, the money plant you see behind me had normal sized leaves and was growing in a large pot (now given away).
+chabane sido I saw the video you were referring to - ua-cam.com/video/5HYEK0H_GpY/v-deo.html
She dissolves water soluble NPK fertilizer in water and feeds it to the roots and also sprays on leaves for foliar feeding,on both sides of the leaves.
So i suggest you go thru all comments of her videos and see if it is covered. else you can post your request there.
thx for the replay
The video seems educational but the music seems loud in the background!!!
Thanks for the feedback & i agree with you. The problem & solution have been addressed in the description.
The last one, you set over the rock like a creeping tree.
Now i get what you were saying. That tree's growth had become stunted and is now a water bonsai. But i will work on your idea in the coming months. Thanks a lot Michael 👍:-)

Hindi mein bolo sir please
Hi Syed, saw your comment today only. Did not get any notification. I experimented with Hindi for a few videos and then decided to stick to English only. Dual language is not practical for me. English subtitles have now been added for this video. Many had complained about the background music making my talk difficult to understand. The issue has been addressed in the description.
