  • How to start bonsai from a sapling || Starting a Ficus Religiosa bonsai || Sacred Fig Peepal bonsai
The other day I noticed a Ficus Religiosa Sacred Fig (also know as the Peepal or Ashvatta tree in India) sapling growing in the pot of an Adenium in my mother's garden and I decided to start a bonsai with it.
    The process is quite simple.
I uprooted the plant, wired it up in a "S" shape, pruned the roots and some of the leaves and potted it in a training pot with bonsai soil. I will let it grow for now and get back to it in a few months time.
Similarly there is another Ficus Religiosa that I have been training since last year and I decided to work on it a bit too. I removed the previous wiring and rewired the tree to shape it up a bit more. Next I pruned the ends and some of the leaves of the tree. I will let this one grow in the same pot for now and get back to it again next year.

How exciting. The amount of bends you put into it will make a very interesting older bonsai, though it's kind of straggly looking now.

@@TheUrbanNemophilist would really like an update of the tree! I have a maple tree (not japanese) grown from seed (from my neighbor's garden, thank you wind!), it's 2 years old now going on 3 and I'm thinking about trying to bonzai it. I also have young lilac spurts about the same age. Anyway, i'm searching a bit to be more educated when spring is back and i'm looking up updates videos

That was very informative. When you are rewiring, I see that you are wrapping the wire against the direction in which it was wrapped before. Is this something I should be aware of or any direction is fine?

Thank you. The wiring rule is to wire the branch in the same direction you intend to twist and bend the branch. I did not really follow any rule here except that I did not want to have the new wire fall in the grooves of the earlier wiring. That might weaken the trunk.

Plants have branches and roots. They do not have pain receptors like humans and animals which allows us to cut and prune them, pluck fruits and vegetables and even consume them without causing pain.
