I really like the idea that Virgil was so mentally and physically broken from all of his previous ordeals that when he split himself into two People, they weren’t the pure essence of human and demon versions of him they were instead the Caricatures of what his broken mind perceived of his human and demon half.

I've written a lot of fiction with this type of theme. I love the idea of a character being not exactly they are, but behaving as or becoming who or what they 'believe' they're supposed to be. It's never quite the true self but still they maintain it because for them it's how they think they 'should' be and moving past that projected caricature is the basis of their character development.

The plot of DMC5 really makes you sit there and realize that Vergil is potentially the most important character in the series.
DMC3: He's a main character, and one of the main antagonists.
DMC1: While having no real agency or character as Nelo Angelo, he serves to be one of the largest pieces of motivation for Dante to move forward and defeat Mundus.
    DMC2: We ignore this one.
DMC4: We play as Vergil's son in a plot entirely revolving around Yamato, Vergil's sword, and Nero's strange connection to it.
DMC5: Vergil hires Vergil's brother and Vergil's son to defeat Vergil so that Vergil can fuse with Vergil to become Vergil.

Great analysis. One tiny, friendly disagreement. I'd say V's alignment is chaotic/neutral good, since even if his ultimate ploy was to reunite with Urizen, he seemed to genuinely want to make his mistakes right and repent for all he's done. He speaks of the gravity of the crimes he committed (his talk with Trish) and clearly, his newfound weakness and humanity have shifted his perspective (and alignment) quite a bit.
But doing the alignment for V was never going to be easy, since he's a split aspect of another character and all that, so obviously this is extremely subjective.

When V first hires Dante he says "I am but two days old" and iirc, this was 2 days after Vergil split himself
In that same conversation, V tells Dante that the job he has is "Your Reason (Urizen) for fighting"

  • @patrickzantomaster
    @patrickzantomaster 2 роки тому +33

I think through V and Urizen Vergil had an alignment change, he saw what his endless pursuit of power got him as Urizen, the same shit he always gets, and empty loss, and as V he recognises that he was a horrible person, the fact that Vergil thanks Nero is something completely honest coming from him and he seems to be a lot more calm than usual, even wanting a true rematch with Dante and contemplating if he would still be the same person if he had been inside the mansion, he accepted a win if he beat Nero (which Dmc 3 Vergil would never accept) and shows some genuine growth here, he got everything he needed but only through Nero did he realise how much he lost through his life, he buried the light deep within himself and cast aside everything, and now is ashamed to confront his demons (his feelings towards his family), I know Dmc is not that deep, but dmc 3 and 5 really try to give you some food for thought

  • @MultiDante333

I feel like in general, Vergil is True Neutral with strong Neutral Evil leanings, because in DMC3, he did not give a single fuck about civilian casualties of unearthing Temen-Ni-Gru, unlocking the hellgate and unleashing demons upon the world, he only cared about gaining P O W E R and at the time, DS Sparda was that beacon of P O W E R. V to me screams Chaotic Good, he killed a mugger without a second thought to return stolen item to a lady, who reacted appropriately and ran away and spent the entire month between DMC5 Prologue and Mission 1 trying his best to minimise civilian casualties from Qliphoth. Urizen is just your average Chaotic Evil, singleminded obscession with P O W E R and "Ends justify the means" approach make him one imo

I really like Vergil’s characterization in DMC3. It’s interesting to draw a line between him and Arkham.
While Vergil is a callous asshole, he doesn’t seem to be explicitly EVIL. I question whether he could’ve raised, or even found out about, the Temen-ni-gru without Arkham’s influence.
Meanwhile, you have Arkham, who sacrificed his wife and is actively worshipping the concepts of Fear and Evil. The man’s practically salivating over becoming the Devil, and I assume the only reason he had Lady at all was because she and her mother were descendants of the original priestess. Marrying someone and raising a child as essentially occult items is PRETTY evil.
I wonder what Vergil would’ve been like if he had never met Arkham. I like to imagine he might’ve gone on to lead a happier life as a strict, surly librarian in Fortuna.

I do wonder what he’ll do now, once he’s out of hell for a time. If he might take up being a scholar, that might be interesting to see (since most characters just keep fighting 😅)

  • @Ithyldr

So I took a slightly different interpretation of the scene where V finds Dante unconscious. Based on how callous he is towards Dante up to that point, and the fact that he seemed tempted to kill the unconscious Dante, but then later tells Dante to get stronger when he clearly had the upper hand as Vergil, I think this is a tipping point for V in terms of his world view. He talks about how Dante is responsible for his suffering, and how things would be better if Dante were dead, but misses the stab on the motionless Dante at the last moment. I think this was a moment of V (and to a greater extent, Vergil) realizing that despite all their issues, he doesn't actually want to kill Dante. As such, I'd give V a Chaotic Good for the epiphany, rather than a Neutral Evil for the temptation.
That said, that's just my interpretation. Not trying to imply that yours was wrong; just wanting to share an alternative one.

Qliphoth is pronounced 'Klee-foth' and the word refers to the evil opposite of the heavenly tree Sepherot who's 13 branches represent the concept of GOD. Sepheroth from FF7 is also named after this. So the Qliphoth tree basically means Devil tree.

Funny enough out of all the playable DMC characters my best ones in order are these: V, Vergil, and Nero(DMC5). There was this one time I just huddled in a corner with perfect view of a group of enemies, spammed my mix up bait combos then got the SSS taunt where he plays classical music. That aside while I love Dante, I love Vergil's fluctuating shift once he starts to notice that going for power is what's not working for him.

I think another facet that’s worth considering for V specifically is that between the prologue and the actual game proper, he spends almost an entire month trying to save people in Red Grave, while he’s aware that he’s literally falling apart.
Dante complicates things especially when he turns up alive after his defeat by Urizen. Here’s this guy, who managed to beat V’s whole self at every opportunity but when he actually swallows his pride and asks for help, Dante bottles it. Ultimately since there’s no way V could use the Sparda I don’t think Dante was in any real danger, I always interpreted that scene as V just sort of pointlessly raging against the literal personification of every wrong turn in his life before he’s forced to acknowledge that it isn’t all Dante’s fault.
I mean I could literally talk about DMC for hours and never get tired but all this to say, I reckon V would start at true neutral, maybe neutral evil but ultimately he’d be chaotic good, leaning to chaotic neutral

There is a simpler way to define Vergil's Alignment:
He wants power, he will do everything that is necessary to do so, be it following the "law" (whatever that would be in the universe), causing chaos, doing good deeds or evil deeds. He wants power, and nothing will standing in his way or is out of the question for him, therefore he is by definition *true neutral*.

Also when vergil.. Ejected V he also ejected 4 nightmares/trumas from himself too, as neither a demon nor a man needs nightmares. and When Urizen and V made back Vergil, non of the Nightmares returned as a Man does not need Nightmares to be whole once more.

Although personally I think some of Vergil’s actions aren’t really that evil though. Such as when he ripped of Nero’s arm, he did it because not only did Yamato belong to him, but he was dying and desperately needed to heal himself. I’d call that neutral. Another awesome entry. Vergil was never a villain in my eyes. He’s not the mustache twirling antagonist trying to rule the world or kill the protagonist. Although most people would see his action of that of a “bad guy” in most fiction. Just a man who was hellbent on his ambition. Not caring how his action affect the world around him. He’s selfish and prideful. Those traits alone almost brought ruin to the world unironically. Which is refreshing to stray away from typical tropes. I hope you do my favorite character Nero, because he’s also an interesting character as well his father and uncle.

The power thing going on between Vergil and Dante is something that I've asked others about before. Both gain comparable levels of power, but their beliefs, motivations, and methods are practically exact opposites of each other. Both lost everything, but Vergil tossed aside his humanity in more ways than one to achieve power, but Dante lives as a "Devilman" if anyone has seen that. Vergil was willing to do anything for power, but Dante, who never actively sought power, was still able to keep up. Then in comes Nero, who, yes, both brothers were worn out from fighting each other, Nero still basically crushed them, and all he had to do was really want to stop them from killing each other.

I'd like to say V's familiars were not ordered by Vergil to test Dante, that was their decision Griffin literally says "We are here to kill you of our own free will". They are walking PTSD, they embody Vergil's nightmares, as such they don't like existing. Their attack on Dante could accomplish 2 things. One (the more likely scenario understood by both them and Dante) Dante wins and they die and finally achieve peace. Two they win and kill Dante (best outcome for them) as they are part of Vergil they do share his goals they hate Dante as much as Vergil does. If they kill him they claim their victory over Dante and since they are familiars without a host they will soon die as well so they still get their peace.

2: Chara (in genoside frisk body)
3: Sans (He is the same in both, and he can see resets, so maybe do both.)
Do an order that feels right, but maybe have frost last, and chara first. Maybe that could be fun to watch. Maybe extra 4th review on
    4: Flowey (both runs)

In the Dante video, you said that if the videos are popular enough, you might do a 3rd video on the dmc franchise. Honestly, I want to see you do a MA on DMC/“Reboot” Dante. People often disregard him as an edgy try-hard that thinks he’s cool, but I think that he has an outstanding and endearing positive development arc that the fans are blinding themselves towards.

I have to disagree with one point. Taking Dante's amulet after defeating him isn't chaotic or evil, neither is attempting to finish off or simply wound an opponent so that they can no longer fight you. It's pragmatic. This wasn't a friendly duel it was a contest of strength and Vergil as the winner took the amulet as his prize. True neutral.

I dont agree with your charts sometimes since you weigh some ridiculously evil things like killing as 1 neutral evil but then give Vergil staggering 4! Neutrals because he was mind controlled essentially making him "neutral", that simply makes no sense man. Sliding the evil urizen to chaotic neutral because V was neutral makes no sense, and the fact that Vergil killed uncountable amounts of people as a result of his selfish wants as either Vergil in DMC3 or Urizen in DMC5 but then ends on an almost chaotic good at the end of this chart? Vergil is a neutral at the best of times and chaotic or neutral evil most of the time in the games.

Personally I rank Vergil more Neutral Evil leaning to Chaotic Evil due the selfish choices he made and he did so willingly. Though the breakdown analysis is interesting, especially as you broke up the aspects of Vergil, which I believe leads to more credence of Vergil being more selfish and evil rather than good. Though I suppose someone could argue that Vergil could be Lawful Evil, but I just do not see it.

    • @Jirodyne
      @Jirodyne 2 роки тому

Vergil, being more selfish and self centered, not caring about laws and rules, but also not going wildly insane and changing his true goal every hour, I would have to say Neutral Evil. And I agree that I don't like TheLoadingCrew's take on this. It's quite clear he is being bias. a lot of the 'Neutrals' are meant to be evil, but just claims it isn't... because he says it isn't. Releasing Demons, even if just for selfish reasons, is still an EVIL act, knowing those Demons will kill innocent people. Just cause Vergil doesn't care, doesn't make it any less evil. It's not just intent, but also the act itself Both sides have to be weighed.

    • @MarkATorres1989

I said this on the dante vid but I think you put a bit to much evil on vergil here he is not doing any of this because he was to hurt anyone or hates anything his focus is entirely on his own goals with an ambivalence to anything that gets crushed along the way more spot on that with dante but still I would say most of vergils actions are solidly in the neutral camp not really in the evil camp
overall I would say that Vergil is solidly lawful neutral with a slight leaning toward evil but only when that is the most beneficial path and dante is heavy chaotic neutral with a slight leaning toward good as he does want to live up to Sparda's legacy but he will do it in his own way

This video proves how little effort went into writing the franchise universe and characters, the fact that 75% of the story chunk is in the manga( material outside of the video games) just baffles me.
But I guess cheap anime fantasy fanservice works lol.
Everytime a game releases, the story part is severely watered down from the previous game, even tho it’s like 50% of the games yet the writers always write their stories an hour before the game is released.
I just wish dmc6 doesn’t just follow on the same cheap Fanservice rout with writing and actually delivers something at least worths investing in that isn’t the same Dante vs Vergil plot for the 17th time aka the most generic milked anime plot ( funny op white hair character 1 vs angrei white haired 2 that is also op) and the writer don’t seem to even explain or showcase each character arc or story in way that is at least believable and doesn’t feel like everytime you play a game a you skipped 5 expansions that explain the characters story . Oh wait *ahem* manga.
Man dmc 1 kinda feel like the only game with an established and kinda well thought out plot
