BTS WINGS era symbolism, explained: Short Films #1-7 (PART 2 of 2)

- The BTS Wings album is full of references to literature and art. Using imagery from Demian by Herman Hesse, BTS explores the loss of innocence, and ties these themes to the characters in their existing fictional universe. *To interpret the dream-like WINGS short films, you need to know both the BTS fictional universe, and the story of Demian.* Please see my previous videos for a summary of each:

As user TheHerezy pointed out in my last video, you will also find that the order of the song titles (Begin, Lie, Stigma, First Love, Reflection, Mama, Awake) correspond to the order of events in DEMIAN.
*Things I left out* :
- Each film was also associated with a *logo* for each member, which merged with the logo of that member's WINGS pairing
- Each film also had quotes from BTS songs, in addition to the Demian quotes
- I only pointed out the lyrics to "Stigma" here, but you will find that the *lyrics* for every song is thematically linked to the overall story, in addition to being personally relevant to BTS as real people.

SUGA & spice You obviously worked hard on this and I appreciate that a lot. Very informative I loved it. Watched all of them that you made. I wouldn’t say I’m BTS obsessed or would consider myself true ARMY but I really admire their creativity And love their music and the messages that they have in them. It’s not something you see a lot these days so that’s really were attracted Them to me in the first place. The music is good and catchy a rhythmic but the message overall is what I look for in any song and they’re amazing at that. They are very talented artists

I personally don't think the lyrics of Begin , or First love or even MAMA mean anything in relation to the storyline...

My unpopular opinion: I don't believe in all the alternate universe thing. I think all members (except Suga who's Demian, but Demian IS a part of Sinclair) are just Sinclair at different stage of his journey, with Jin being the final step, and each others being past selves / personality aspects that exist within Jin. Jin isn't trying to save his friends, he's trying to heal/repair all of these parts of himself, making peace with all his rebellious angry lost deliquent insecure young past selves. Basically, growing up. From my interpretation, they're all "fixed" in Euphoria.
Also, after the trippy part in Jin's mv, I noticed we get "fixed" references to all the previous mvs, in reverse order:
6. JIn awakes, unlike J-Hope who's always stucked in a dream state (references Sinclair at the hospital, right before he transforms)
5. Jin touches his reflection and unlike RM's it ripples but does not shatter in a million sharp pieces (which is a pretty good metaphor for mellowing out as you age)
4. Jin's piano in his room is intact, unlike Suga's
3. Jin's "prison" (there are scratch marks on the doors, and they represent V in the polaroids) simply opens and lets him out when he wants to walk out, unlike V's
2. Jin's apple is whole, unlike Jimin's
1. Jin has the final complete painting of the bird, taking flight. And he's... content?

I noticed that in the coreography of Blood Sweat & Tears, they do that "chin, back of the head, close Eyes"-thing, but in the refrain of Fake Love they are just doingg it backwards, which means that they probably are enlightened now. Sorry for that bad language.

I was waiting for this!! Watching this series specifically not only awes me because of your interpreting skills, but also because of BTS (most likely Bighit as well) and how much detail and thought they put into their concepts. Like yeah, everything is pleasing aesthetically, but every single detail is meticulously tied to something larger, grander. The detail that most surprised me was the wallpaper being of Abraxas in Jin's short film. Wallpaper is meaningful too! Just...wow.

I think the burning of the six flower petals that represent each member and the youth they longed to keep is how jin can travel through different dimensions. My theory is that Jin has to let go to move on to a different reality. So he let go of his friends (awake), he let go of his youth (youth series), and he let go of his innocence (BST). Idk this is just my theory in a world of theories lol.

Hi SUGA & Spice! I just wanted to let you know that your video on the WINGS era symbolism (part 1 & 2) were a huge help to create my paper on how to use BTS as a educational tool. I am a university student and I am coordinating a BTS festival in my University and one of the activities are 10 minute presentations about BTS. I decided to make mine about how BTS encourages literacy and how to use their work as a learning tool for our students (I am studying to be a teacher). Don't worry I gave you the credit in terms of the era and book analysis. I was very happy to see your video, it was very in depth and well supported. I just randomly wanted to let you know and thank you for your help.

In Love Yourself series, Jin also protects a flower in a cage (?). He opens the window to see Yoongi's apartment burning, with his unconcious body being dragged and saved by Jungkook. It confuses me how he blankly stares at the scene, as if he's tired of jumping between universes and repeating the same self-destructioning fate.
I see it now, Namjoon holds all the secrets to the whole story, he being the member with the least story available.

Me explaining the entire HYYH Era and Wings Era in detail to my sister is like explaining trigonometry to a dog.
i personally think jin changes timelines, not realities. in epiphany, we can see multiple of him around the room from different points in the video. also, when he stepped outside the room, it was raining and he got soaked; perhaps representing all the troubles him and his friends have gone through. he turns back time to get rid of the rain (troubles), but he’s still soaked, symbolizing that no matter what he does, tragedy remains.

Heres my theory--
Yoongi and Jungkook are together and things are going great in the beginning due to the guys being immature, little kids that still have their innocence. Then Yoongi starts playing with the lighter due to the fire his mom died in, could it be that he was deciding to commit suicide by setting his house on fire? Jungkook, being his manz, blew the fire out, symbolizing that he will be there for Yoongi through hardships till the end. Then Yoongi begins to think; he doesnt want to have any meaning to someone, hes worthless, he doesnt want to hurt the people he holds dearly to his heart, and he himself, doesnt want to get hurt as well. So, in run, ge tries to push away Jungkook while he is drunk. Jungkook wouldnt leave him because he is all he has left, but ultimately failed in saving Yoongi. He goes off on his own, he was neglected by his family and now that Yoongi is gone hes overwhelmed by sadness and believes hes worthless due to losing the last person that cares about him. Yoongi, then realizes he made a mistake. In I NEED U, Jungkooks flannel is hanging on the coat rack on the wall. Yoongi is alone in his bed looking to his side, missing Jungkook and regretting his actions. Jungkook purposely bumps into thugs only to get beat up, but he laughs as they do it. After his beating, he remembers the good memories of the days when the guys were together. Jungkook then, gets into a car accident and is in the hospital. Yoongi blames himself for what happened and breaks into a music store to play the piano. He attempts to play Begin by Jungkook but, forgets. During this time he hears Jungkooks whistle to the song. He goes to investigate, hoping he will find Jungkook. It led him the street where the accident happened, while he was there, a car rushes past him, barely missing Yoongi. In FAKE LOVE, Yoongi sets his room on fire, does this represent him committing suicide? Does this also mean that Jungkook wasnt there to save him, to blow out the fire? Then in Jungkooks Wings Short Video, theres a painting that is rumored to be a merged painting of Kookie and Yoongi. The painting suddenly starts dripping colored paint, does this mean the death of Yoongi? Because as it drips, Jungkook shouts "HYUNG!" or is it that he needs him?

This is so interesting u should definitely make a video about this and go more in depth about the other characters plots i love to hear what your theories are. I know it's very late, but I just wanted to say this:
1. Wow. Your theory is pretty good and I highly agree with it. You really should make a video.
2. I think the blood we see on the street in the "First Love" shortfilm is Jungkook's. It's not actually there, but it represents that Yoongi feels responsible for the accident Jungkook got into.
(Other theories are that it might have something to do with Jin's girlfriend, or Yoongi himself or his dead mother. But I'm convinced that it's Jungkook's.)
3. The painting is a portrait of YOONGI.
Jungkook has said that in his latest Vlive, so it's confirmed.
4. (This is just my very own opinion, of course you may disagree with it)
I think that Yoongi and Jungkook are a couple in this fictional universe.

I've watched several videos about BTS theories and, although I loved them, I was quite confused. Now I just finished reading Demian and I immediately searched for videos who could clarify everything about the book's references in Wings, hoping to understand more. And well, your videos are just what I was looking for! Thank you for all the dedication you put into these! I would really appreciate if you analysed also the last MVs that Bighit dropped, like Euphoria (I imagine I'm not the only one who would like this). This is incredible, I had never paid attention to the connections. They all tell a story. I must read that book, the intricacies of such dreamworld are fantastic and the boys represented them beautifully.

I have always believed they were saying something important, I just never read between the lines.
Idk just jotting this down before I forget, but what if Jin was replaying the past to fix things, but realized that he has to accept what happened and the mistakes that they made, and move on? I just finished Demian (finally lol), and the whole point of the story was for Sinclair to realize and accept himself to eventually accept his fate no matter how difficult it was. This relates to one quote from Demian that he writes under the painting that looks like himself and Demian, “Fate and character are different names for the same idea.” Jin wants to change who he is or the other members so he can change their fate, but the truth is that they can’t change who they are, but that have to accept the parts that they hate about themselves/can’t live with and break out of the egg (their perception of the world) to finally reach the state of Abraxas (accepting good and bad, accepting who they are, and accepting their fate).
This relates as well to HYYH era of the destruction of youth as we walk into the real world. When we’re young, we idealize the world, what we should and shouldn’t be, but slowly realize that we’re finding ourselves in less than ideal situations, being less than ideal people. I’ve always connected the ‘world of light’ as the superego (where society and rules are ‘good’ and ‘moral’, we live strictly and ideally), and the world of dark as the ‘id’ (dark, primal, impulsive)- and ‘YOUTH’ was breaking out of the superego and wrestling with the id to find ourselves. Even in the book, Sinclair says, “We make gods, wrestle with them, and have them bless us,” (And gods in this aren’t necessarily divine, we can equate them with demons as under Abraxas they’re all kind of the same).
I think it’s really cool how BTS’s team decided to take Demian and rehash so many ideas and direct it more specifically to think about youth and nostalgia. Honestly, I think they were one of the first ones in kpop at the time to really address this issue towards teens? HYYH and WINGS era have always been so amazing to me, and I kinda miss those days lol. Thank you for these 2 videos! I can’t keep up with all the small symbolism throughout this era so having it explained all in one place helps lol

I think it's significant the way Jin removes his ear piece as he contemplates eating the apple. It reminds me of the conscience, of the angel on your shoulder (or, the devil, since it is his left ear), telling him to eat/not eat the apple. Him taking out the earpiece represents a sort of control of the situation. It's his decision to eat or not eat, not him being tempted one way or the other.
Basically at last six friends mean six personalities in jin sometimes evil sometimes good. He has to accept everything in him and continue his journey.... 🤗🤗🤗 My analysis
I feel like Jin is Sinclair at his final stage, when he has reached enlightenment and has accepted that the must move on from his childhood and everything that was holding him back from embracing his fate.

I think - just a theory though- that that painting was supposed to be a mix of all of their faces, and jungkook is seeing all the terrifying things happening to each member and is confused and scared, thats why he said hyung, and not suga hyung, or any specific member.
I have not read the book demain, (am going to do it) but I do believe that it's related, not completely though, it is related but the story line is very much different, I don't think each person represents a specific character in it, for example, and things like that.

There are special notes for LY Her, Tear and Answer. That is their official story. The lyrics and that notes and the events in videos make a full story and explanation.
I think Tae is demian since in BS&T Sinclair (Jin) kisses the statue with the wings representing Demian, wanting us to say that he accepted the dark side inside him, then we see Tae without wings and smiling to understand he is Demian.
I'm not theorizing but I think it's really interesting all the story that BTS did through their songs, they do not stop impressing me!! :))

Random thought that came to my mind that I haven't seen anyone point out:
To me, maybe Namjoon represents Taehyung's dad in some way? I mean, it makes sense if you mix your theory together with mine.
1. Him consuming the drink (representing the alcohol) with the hawk in it (which represents Taehyung) and then he falls "unconscious" or whatever (this together might represent the murder that Tae committed because of his father's alcoholism that turned into abuse) and his tattoo of the Hawk becomes colorful (again, Taehyung).
2. The mirrors might be the shame the father has over the fact that he's an alcoholic, and the mirrors shattering might be because instead of owning up to his mistakes he tries to shut it all out, probably resulting in him drinking more.
3. If your theory of Taehyung being the one who calls is correct, then maybe he can't answer because they're not in the same world because Namjoon is dead and Taehyung is alive.
I know it's probably not correct, since he probably fits a differen't character in Demian that I don't remember the name of (the one that probably makes more sense considering his role in BS&T), but I thought that it was an interesting coincidence/thought that I just wanted to share ^-^ feel free to ask questions if I confused you because this is a little all over the place. Just please don't hate on me. I know that it is pretty dragged out and illogical in some senses and also doesn't fit the whole universe, but I just wanted to get it out there.
I think I'm at the right place to tell you about the painting: JK says in his vlive on the 6th of September 2018 at 41:50 that it is Suga!
In every wings film at 1:46 happens something jungkook scrrams hyung in 1:46 yoongi hears someone scream hyung at 1:46 jimin looks up at 1:46 at many other things happen at 1:46
When ppl are saying Yoongi or Tae are Demian, I don't think that this is the case. I think that all of the members are their own version of Sinclair and Demian or the pairings are each others version of Demian/ Sinclair. In every WINGS short film, there is a quote from Demian, possibly implying that Demain could potentially just be a voice or guiding spirit. Although it is up to Jin to save them, they also need to save themselves in a way and listen to Demian, their guiding spirit. Just a theory, tho lol

My theory is that everything is in Jin’s mind and he’s the only one with a mental illness, maybe he doesn’t even know the others and just imagines that all of that happened and he wanted to fix it so he tried to but every time he failed and he’s just slowly being consumed by his illness
I think that each pare of members represent Demian and Sinclair in different moments of the history.
Jimin was Sinclair at first, with the fist lie, than yoongi was Demian, his "fist love", meaning that was the fist time that the spirit guide and help him, 'cuz for me, Demian and the spirit that guides are the same thing.

Can I ask, what about the time places in these stories line. Like Jhope (mama) it was showing 13:00 bc there shining light maybe? Then in euphoria in jimin's time with his friends in the hospital it was showing 10:30 in the morning bc it the windows showed that the light of the sun will raise up. So, is this just that Jin controlling time or showing another alternate universe?

So wait, all the stuff in your character introduction video did happen, but all this second/double meaning stuff with Demian, although extremely interesting is making me even more confused.
Did Jungkook and Suga die? How do their new character pairs line up with the story or meaning? How does each individual character history/story tie in with Demian? Was Jin actually saving (or at least trying) his friends? I do absolutely love the video, but I'm a bit lost. There were some scenes in this video that were repeated from your character introduction video and the implication (or at least that's what I got) that they could have two different, separate meaning is totally screwing with my mind right now. Can anyone explain or clear this up for me?

I think the best option Its just to start from the beginning then watch other different theories and explanations of the videos pay attention to details and come to your own conclusions because there are so many theories and all of them kinda make sense and it is hard to explain so as i said start from the beginning .
