I didn't grow up near Baltimore but I became a Colts fan as a kid because of Johnny U. I've often wondered what would have happened in SB III if he had been fully healthy.

I remember when I was 10 yrs old back in 1967 and our little league football jerseys looked like the Colts I wanted #19 so bad . He was the greatest of his time as are all athletes in any sport . No time machine.

It was his ability to read defenses and adapt the offensive scheme to exploit their weaknesses that made him so great..

The best ever quarterback. I remember a friend I knew who is deceased told me about seeing Johnny Unitas playing at the old Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.
Kezar Stadium had a lot of legendary coaches and players visiting that venue.

I disagree. He was a distributor first who sets up receivers and backs. Then move the defensive around before hitting the big strike.

I think he would have 70-80k. I don't know about 100000. Hell the guy was hurt from 65-71 and still won a superbowl. His injuries today would have been a 40 minute surgery with a scope and done. He was a coach on the field too. His OC Don McCafferty was his consultant. Don Shula hated him. Carol Rosenbloom fired Webb Ewbank and wrecked the team.

@@davanmani556 I'm old enough to have watched him play, and you're correct about the Don Shula offense he directed during the mid to late 1960s. That's when my exposure to him occurred. The Weeb Eubank offense had a bit more gambling in it, largely due to Johnny Moore, the best combo runner-pass catcher outside of Marshall Faulk. They are the only players with at least 5,000 yards rushing and 6,000 yards receiving in their careers Lenny was not starting when I started watching, so had no idea how prolific he was. Unitas was a big part of the reason why, as they both came to the Colts in 1956. They don't make them like that any Moore (my bad), which is a reflection of changes in the game as opposed to the players. Imagine seasons lasting just 12 games, which was true until the AFL started playing 14 in 1960 (NFL would follow in 1961). It's too bad there is so little footage of those Colts teams of the late 1950s. If interested, watch Moore catch the 1st of three passes (for 126 yards) for the games first score: ua-cam.com/video/FTTU81mcp6s/v-deo.html

Im like Mike Curtis. Still not over that damn SBIII. An 11yo Colts fan took that one very hard!
Also seeing Unitas in a Charger uniform was very unsettling.

His best receiver, IMHO, was Willie Richardson, then John Mackey. Richardson was a better athlete than the others. He could go up and get those passes and make it happen. He was John Unitas', "go-to," guy, later in Unitas' career.

Imagine if you took the 1959 Unitas, and put him in today's game, with all the QB protections built in that he never had. His stats would be unreal! Remember, he played a third of his career on only a 12 game schedule. If he played 17 games, like today, he would lead every statistical category every year! Oh, and another thing...HE called all his plays! No QB does that any more. The greatest Field General indeed!!! Someone asked Joe Montana if he was the GOAT. He replied that he was a distant 2nd to Unitas!!

I liked the list of field generals especially being a Washington Redskin fan with Sonny on the list. Very underated QB. They talk about Brady and his 7 Super Bowls. Well Otto had 7 Championships as well. Any of those 5 would have alot more passing yards in today's touch football.
