- Johnny Unitas was at his best during the late-50s and early-60s, but he still had a little magic left in him during the beginning of the 1970s. These highlights feature his best plays from the 1969-72 season (he missed the majority of 1968 with an injury).

Brady is the winningest and the best of the modern era. But Johnny is the QB position he invented it .
Johnny Unitas: The man who defined the modern quarterback. His surgical passes and trademark two-minute drills became the benchmark that all other quarterbacks became judged by.
By this point in his career, Johnny U had sustained a serious injury and was obviously declining as a player. However, he still showed flashes of the quarterback he once was, especially during the Colts 1970 Super Bowl season. His ability to hit the open man after doing a spinning play-action fake on the goal line was uncanny. Oh, and if you take away anything else from this video, it should be that John Mackey was really freaking good.
Honestly, the reason I picked these seasons was because most of Johnny Unitas' non-black and white highlights come from these seasons on episodes of This Week in Pro Football. Having some highlights in color and others not would have been jarring to me.
And since it appears the United States is exiting its COVID-19 shutdown (for better or worse), this may be the last video you see from me in a month or two. Hopefully not though!

I’ve seen so many quarterbacks but this guy is the standard for many modern qbs my grandfather used to tell me about Johnny U, we’d watch and rewatch his game film all day then he’d take me outside and drill me (Later on in middle and high school I won 6 rings) man I miss you Grandad 💯🔥🥺

@@Varangiangaurd Johnny was the nicest guy…..he lived on Dunbeath Court in Lutherville Md, then to Legends Hill in Timonium Md……a home town hero that would come up the the Junior High ( Ridgely ) and always had time for autographs and tossing the ball around….as kids we knew how great he was……and it was an honor to be around him…..

There have have been great QBs since the Unitas era but he was the first to engineer the full-on aerial display. He was my inspiration as a kid in the 60s and I learned everything I could about the 50s as soon as I was old enough to read. And on a side note, those Colt uniforms, especially the all whites, remain the most beautiful the league has ever seen. Thank you for these wonderful highlights and thank you Mr. John Unitas.
Seasons were only 12-14 games all the years Unitas played. If he had played in 16 game seasons his records would never have been surpassed.
I was enjoying watching his pass protection as well. Some good backfield blocking in there.

I was born in Baltimore. We loved The Colts. We loved Johnny U. My Dad worked for Bethlehem Steel. He was transferred to Indiana. After all these years , I have remained a staunch Ravens and Orioles fan.
There is only one and there will never be another QB as good as Johnny Unitas he was the greatest of all time.

Don't know if any of you know this or not, but about the last 6-7 years that Unitas played, he called most of the plays....he was that respected by the coaches.....his nickname was "Mr. Quarterback"....and they didn't call him that for no reason...he was the best there ever was.......

I always think of John Mackey's quote " being in huddle with Johnny was like being in the huddle with god." Wish i saw him play. Loved reading about him and seeing what his teammates and opponents said and they all admired him. That says alot. He would still be dominant now probably more so with all the rules for offenses. He revolutionized the passing game and quarterbacking. There are highlights you can find where he did no look pass and the switch to side arm passes.

Imagine this man playing in 21st century...
Frank Deford said it best. It doesn’t matter whether or not Johnny Unitas was the greatest, he is THE quarterback for all-time in the same way that Babe Ruth is THE baseball player for all-time. So much of what we see in today’s NFL, the two minute drill, the four minute offense, and simply controlling the game, can all be traced back to what Unitas was doing in the 50s and 60s.

No way to prove it but right now I put Unitas at the top of the list of QB's as to the ability to throw to a spot where a ball needs to be thrown. Meaning to get a pass completed he didn't have to depend on the receiver making a great catch as much as other QB's if that makes sense.
Today's generation don't get or understand how great Johnny was they want to talk about Peyton Manning Tom Brady and Joe Montana and those are three all-time greats but you got to have Johnny Unitas in that conversation as well

this is a time when quarterbacks got knocked on their asses even after passing the ball.
I agree with your point, but I think it bears mentioning that the guys hitting Unitas et al. were maybe 250, 260 and ran like human beings. The guys coming through the O-line now can be 330, with a whole lot of it muscle, and do a 4.8 40. The training methods and nutrition now make it a bad idea to let QBs take that beating. It's almost literally like being hit by a car.

What I so repected about Unitas is that he looked the same going to the sidelines. You can never tell by his expression if he threw a touchdown and an interception. You just couldn't frustrate him.

Ngl. I always though he was just some old dude who is overrated because he played long ago. But now that I watch it……this dude is the most accurate quarterback I have ever seen. Even though this is highlights. His drop back is insane. He may not be the goat, simply because the game has developed and people have studied how to play. This brings back a lot of memories at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. Nice to see Tony Lorrick and John Mackey in action. Tom Brady is undoubtedly great, but Unitas, an unlikely quarterback, was the greatest at getting the ball to the receiver. Did I miss Ray Berry in this video. Also did not see Lenny Moore. Thanks for this walk down memory lane.

@@fawnlliebowitz1772 some of the passes shown here are from an amazing fall 1972 matchup of Joe Namath versus his childhood hero, Johnny Unitas...in the first quarter, Unitas was calling for running plays, while Namath was throwing the whole game...But then, Unitas started throwing in the 2d quarter...by the end of the game Unitas had racked up almost 400 yards passing , while Namath with his earlier start at throwing was over 400 yards..who knows, .it might be the record for most total years in a game in NFL history

TBH Johnny denounced the Colts after they moved and would always be at Ravens games once they came to Baltimore...There is a Unitas Statue outside the Ravens Stadium. He once said, "I played in Baltimore, not Indianapolis" and even asked the NFL to keep his stats and history in Baltimore and not with the Colts franchise.

I was born in New York in 1951, so growing up my favorite sports "heroes" were Mantle, Mays, Bill Russell, and Unitas. Even after being in Massachusetts for the entire length of Tom Brady's career (and really liking and enjoying him as a QB) I don't think he's technically "better" than Unitas, although he's in the same ballpark. It's a different game, but that ability to see better than everyone else on the field, and get it to the right guy at the right time marks both their careers (as it does Montana and Peyton Manning - Eli only fits if you consider getting a ball stuck in David Tyree's helmet). The other part is the stories of him and Raymond Berry staying hours after practice working on routes - that desire is what marks the truly great ones. Maybe not the GOAT, but can't be left out of the conversation.

He definitely put some spice into the QB role but I wouldn’t call him the greatest of all time, a lot of the defense back then wasn’t well disciplined. This is why offenses in the 50/60s had so many hall of famers. It was almost easy to be a stand out player but with that being said he definitely was the man.

Being a Unitas fan, I'll NEVER forgive Dumb Shula, sorry I meant Don Shula for not letting Unitas start the second half of '69 Superbowl. Morrall simply didn't have it that day, and while still coming off an injury Unitas still would've been better. That dumb mistake alone should've kept Shula out of the Football HOF!!!!! But they voted him in anyway!

@@markharrison2830 well, It was VERY important to the NFL that the Jets win that 1969 Super Bowl and establish the AFL as the supposed ''equal'' of the NFL...we also need to remember that just 3 years after losing to Namath and the Jets, Don Shula's team AMAZINGLY had the ONLY "Perfect Season" in the entire history of the NFL andd topped it off with the 1973 Super Bowl win...!
