As a 'singer' I always remember the blues scale as: 'Woke Up My Ba - By Left Me'. (Add a few outside notes and you can get 'Caravan' without too much rummaging.) It's like 'Oh Will You Wash My Father's Shirt?. Which I could never master on piano.
Thanks, Dr. K. We really appreciate what you are doing for us. You are providing a great service. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and Camera Lady!!!
Brendan - You're a legend mate, your tutorials are exactly what I have been looking for as I am classically trained but have always marvelled at the blues and jazz techniques and wondered what was behind them. Most attempts to teach myself have failed so having trawled the net for guidance I always return to your lessons! Thanks for helping to broaden my musical scope albeit in the early stages following 25 + years of playing what I read! just need to devote more time now to your channel. Keep it up as people are listening! cheers mate Dave in Bournemouth Respect
+kawasakisarge Thanks for this comment Dave! Take your time with the lessons, there's a lot to absorb. If you're classically trained get the badass boogie bundle sheet music transcriptions, they will really help. Stay tuned, and keep up the boogie in bournemouth! DR K
+kawasakisarge ME too!! Classically trained. My classical teacher quit me in high school cuz I wanted boogie and she could not do it. Wow. We have it rough.... until now!! Thanks Dr. K!
...and me to an extent. I did grade 2 piano ........ just the basics I guess. It was all struggle struggle with scales etc and rubbish music the teacher wanted me to do. I wanted to do boogie but nobody was interested, thus I made it quite clear I didn't want to do it any more. Shame.
Always wanted to play the piano in this style but taught classic route because all teachers only know that and thought in the 50s, anything less was debauchery!
What a blessing you are to share your gift freely on here so that thousands can learn how to play the best music in the world of Blues and Boogie woogie. The world needs more people like you. Can you tell me what notes your left hand was chopping in this video? C and what?
Very happy to find this episode. Many woogie tutorials confuses viewers this scale as western C scale, especially those beginner tutorials that skip a few notes and retro fit it in C major. And it made me question why it sounds so different from Taylor Swift's music.
Epic playing man! I'm a very strong guitar player and have been playing for 15+ years and recently decided that learning piano would reallllly up my studio production capabilities. It's been relatively easy for me to transfer knowledge of scales, modes, chords, etc. to the piano however I'm running into a challenge with figuring out what is the most practical way to play a scale, run or melody with my right hand i.e. what fingers to use, when to cross over my thumb and move my hand, etc. I really like your style and your improvisation was super tasteful, do you happen to have a video that might help me get better with figuring out when and where to cross over and how to play with more fluidity? Thanks for reading!
So fine, Brendan. Your smoothness inspires confidence in others. Friendly shout-out to Camera Person as well. Couldn't even see you if it wasn't for Camera Person. Would a beginner profit from your book(s)? How, and how much?
You're awesome. I was having trouble with the Busboys song, "The boys are back in town." Helped me work through this alot except for the beginning chords. Ahhh.!
Growing up my dad used to play this style and he still does, but he no longer owns his piano. When he moves he is going to pick one up and play again, but I miss his music. I never learned to play the piano, but I am surprised how fast I am picking up the rhythm of this. I guess growing up and hearing it all the time has helped. Im going to surprise my dad next time I visit and gift him a keyboard and then play along with him as a gift. Thanks for this I hope when I have a son I will be able to play similarly to my dad because its so cozy to me.
*plays amazing thing that would take any normal human ages to learn* Him: okay so that’s just some pretty simple, basic easy improvisation using the blues scale Me: *flips table*
It's sounds easy but I play the piano for over 8 years and I'm still stuggeling onn boogie woogie. It's one of the best sounding but also one of the most difficult. But I will keep practicing and you videos help a lot.
I have played a 2nd or 3rd, or maybe even 4th rate boogie woogie! (LOL) I have figure out a long time ago the secret to being 1st rate is to have a left wrist made of Titanium!
Thanks for this. I believe that the easiest way to learn the minor blues scale and in fact any scale or chord in all 12 keys is to not only learn the notes and chord names. Study the INTERVALS as well. For example, you get a C major chord by stacking a minor triad on top of a major one. To get a C minor chord you stack a major triad on top of a minor one. You get the minor blues scale by starting on the root - say C. Add a minor third to Eb, then a whole tone to F. Go up a semitone to play the #4 or the tritone of C which is F#. Then go up a semitone to G then a minor 3rd to Bb. Then go a whole tone to bring you to C, the root but an octave higher. For beginners this may sound complex but believe me it works. All the best 🔒🔑.
Counting in semitones, I taught myself the same thing. Pick a starting note, +3, +2, +1, +1, +3, +2. To make it a bit easier, I used to tell myself 32, 11, 32.
Mr. Brendan if you can help me, I'm very confused about how to play boogie woogie because I play blues on the piano using the typical C blues scale, but playing boogie woogie it sounds me better using C7 /F7/G7 with the blues note. So, it sounds better playing E note instead of Eb note on the C chord. What is your opinion? Thank you!
I encourage piano players to learn the blues scale in Eb. Keith Richards says that blues guitarists used to detune to Eb to better accompany the piano player. Eb pentatonic is the most accessible key for improvising on piano, and many blues licks are intuitive and easy to play. You can play much more than chopsticks!
i always play my electric in Eb which is just a half step down gives the notes and guitar a better sound and tone also sounds dirtier for that rock/blues tone tune half step down im currently attempting to learn blue and boogie woogie on keyboard atm im getting the hang of it piano is a beautiful instrument
What's bothering me is- how to break the blues scale? (play notes outside of it?) I think I saw many "A"'s and "D"'s, sometimes E's, but could you elaborate when can you break the scale and what notes do you use? Is some notes better when you move to the F chord? others to the G seven?
Remember guys, anything on this not matter how hard it is not matter how impossible it appears, if you split it into multiple small parts and learn each one individually and practice as hard as you love it, you can learn anything.
I got a question; every time i practice the chop on the left hand ,i forget how many measure i have played while i am playing with the right hand. How to solve the problem Dr K.?
I play by ear and I've never been able to figure this out I also have difficulty getting my left hand and right hand to work together I've always found it very difficult to have fine motor controls on my left hand
Take the E out of the major chord in your left hand. This would make the chord a Perfect 5th instead, which basically allows for more freedom and creativity in your right hand. A perfect 5th does not need to submit to keys of major or minor scale, thats why its perfect. (So play that C and G in your left hand... Dont play C, E, and G... The E is whats making it sound wrong.... Ik this is a late reply btw lol
@@timcronin5107 late or not I appreciate the reply. I never thought about it that way. I never really made that connection to why they call it a perfect fifth. Ever since I wrote that comment I actually been doing what you just described, but I never really knew why it sounded better.

Question. How do you fit this scale into western scales? I know we can fit Latin jazz into western scale because it is minor key in phrygian mode. It's called the harmonic minor scale. It's the natural minor scale that you're thinking of which uses Bb for the 7th note.
