Found it ridiculous he called a general election right after the worst recession in the history of the state.. It did recover but he should have called it in early 1990.. I think then he could have won a overall maybe just after the EU presidency
Well if you read Berties book he was of the view that if you bring an election on the people they'll resent you for it, voter turnout for that election was low
@@aaronbourke7621 I agree with you about the recession, while we know now through the lens of history that he and MacSharry had put the finances right the people on the street couldn't feel the difference Disagree with you about the EU Presidency, Bruton and Ahern had celebrated EU Presidencys and neither really translated into vote winners
PRSTV is extremely proportional. Very hard to get an overall majority. Also polls used to over estimate the FF vote for many years, until pollsters introduced readjustments.
it was very hard to get an overall majority for if anything FF itself (since it was impossible for FG to get an overall majority) since it usually depended on the FF leader's image, promises, speeches, actions, policies et cetera at the time. other than that on the polls i'd say you're right, but then again this depends on which county that you'd be polling on along with whether it be nationwide. (since most opinion polls were conducted in bloody dublin).
If you're interested in Haughey I have a playlist of all the available clips I could find, sadly some of have disappeared with the deletion of KillianM2s channel but there's still a good few left
The 1989 Irish election was an election not needed. The previous election of 1987 gave Fianna Fail a minority government. The 1989 election was called for one reason only, MONEY - FF knew they could reap in thousands of £££s in donations from businessmen etc.
for a minute i thought alan partridge was interviewing aul charley , was always told he was not great , but he is alot better than the current administration , there were hard times then , but there are hard times now and will get harder .
he was a smart cookie
great to watch the nuances of his facial gestures and he listens to questions.
very odd how the polls said that an FF majority was likely and then they end up losing 6 seats along with having to go into coalition with the PD's.

The people who voted for him - in the main - he wouldn’t have urinated on.
On Thursday May 25th 1989 a election was called for June 15th.
"A election?"😂😂😂😂😂
Sound is brutal.
Adjust your volume accordingly 😌
Duignan resigned from RTÉ to be Charlie’s press spokesman.
No he didn't, he was Albert Reynolds media spokesperson
@@shaneoneill299 You’re right, I stand corrected.
@@shaneoneill299 RTE - fair and balance ... well fair to Fianna Fail of course and no one else.
