Thank you for having me, Nathan! It wasn't an easy conversation to have, but I respect your work on here as well as the balanced and fair reporting you do so it was great to join you to talk about an important topic.
I definitely think Katseye had something to do with it. VCHA’s music unfortunately seemed a little too childish? Whereas Katseye’s music at least could grab teens and young adult attention. I think VCHA definitely needs some revitalization, but they can only do but so much considering how young their youngest member is. They can’t do too mature concepts yet.
i think there's also a culture shock(?) like we know that kpop training system is dark, hard, and somehow f'ed up and it's not a normal thing in america
Like it's one thing to see atrocities happen to others and see them accept it as normal, but then when you go through the same thing, it's like a wakeup call to everyone and then it's like "wtf are you doing?"
Eddie from N.SSign just left his group after being on hiatus for health reasons. This comes after he posted online a few months ago alluding to things. How people deserve the truth, they aren’t and have never been a team or family, that none of it is genuine etc. Seems like the younger generation of idols are saying enough is enough and are less willing to put up with certain conditions or treatment. Just based on everything that seems to be going on in the k-pop world currently in regard to stuff like this. At the end of the day I hope everyone does what they need to do to be happy ❤
The fact that NiziU and NexZ maybe went through the same situation since they also did something like A2K but they maybe didn't say anything because this also expected in Japan.
These things are not how kpop treats their trainees. Its like east asians treat their children. Ofc not all but most end their school day very late. They have 6 day school weeks and they still practice physical punishments like kneeling with their hands up or doing laps. It is easier for them to go into a trainee system that potentially ends with huge fame and money
I feel like a lot of people don't realize this, but even in USA the treatment is normal in women's competitive teams like Cheer, gymnastics, and figure skating.
I'm stereotyping, but lots of those women have Russian or Eastern European backgrounds, no? I think they have a different mindset than regular Americans.
@IglooDweller some of the teachers are but the students are still American. Think about dance moms. The way she treated the kids wasn't an exaggeration. When I was in cheer we worked on an unconditioned warehouse and if we couldn't do a skill we couldn't get water. We were punished as a team for one member. We competed with injuries. I'm not saying it's the best but we weren't even nearly the toughest squad in the area. Your brain gets conditioned a certain way when you are on squads like that and because we are women and our competitions are perfomance based EDs are RAMPANT.
People don’t really realize in general how competitive it is in the US period once you get to the high levels. Not just in sports and the like. Abuse is normal in a way is super competitive fields.
I was always very skeptical about the USA experiment for cultural reasons but I never imagined it would be this disastrous. KPop agencies are so obsessed with the image of their groups they forgot about the image of their own agencies and industry. They have a global audience now and the world will not tolerate this BS. I'm so angry and sad for for the girls of VCHA. Same for NewJeans and any other mistreated trainees and idols. Thanks for creating this amazing video and advocating for all idols.
Jyp the company is not the same as jyp the artist! He stepped down as ceo a long time ago, please don't show him when talking about jyp as it's misleading. Many people believe he was personally responsible for the mistreatment, which is not true in this case.
@@bdh711 well if she was able to sue JY Park or JYP Entertainment she could end up with tons of money and she could ruin JYP financially. But she can only sue JYP USA which was started in 2022 and basically has nothing.
JYP just does not make music which transfers to US/UK markets unless someone is already a fan of Kpop. The marketing and delivery is cringey within those markets, JYP himself comes across a little weird and the whole 'one man' leading/owning/controlling them is super outdated - manufactured pop. It can be done, but it needs to be cleverly positioned to somewhat play down that part. For example the way of introducing groups when they say the names together, like 'We are Itzy' said in unison is weird for us, like they are robots. Groups like GIdle are far better placed as you can see they create and produce their own songs etc. They come across as Kpop but they are authentic, especially in their era of strong women in music. Even the interviews most Kpop girl groups (and boys sometimes) are not allowed to say anything of real substance. For example Yeji, you see the real her when she is training, she is clearly an expert and has crazy level skills in performance, choreo and singing, but that is hidden from the public marketing in Korea. But that's what US markets want to see, not all the cute heart fingers and them having no opinions or ownership of their selves. YG knows this and he totally changes the positioning to US market. If you see an interview of Lisa or Jennie in the US compared to Korea there is a massive difference in tone, topics, self confidence etc.
I have to agree with you. As much as I love VCHA, I actually felt bad for Lexi and Savanna when they debut under JYPE. Those two girls got soo much swag and are great entertainers. I felt they would have gone so much further with A company like YG.
You are absolutely right. The JYP girl groups seem over controlled, robotic as they are trotted out for choreographed performances, lack of song writing opportunities, and basically get contracted out to show up at fashion shows and product endorsements. Seen many awkward appearances at the fashion shows.
NewJeans was the one breaking that mould in large part thanks to the visionary Min Hee-Jin . And because she challenged the old patriarchal guard they are now doing everything in their power to destroy her and NewJeans.
@@scanspeak00Spot on. Americans respect authenticity, creativity and individuality-something these Korean execs can’t manufacture. These conglomerate c-suites and executive boards are 100% all male, something that just won’t fly in the West.

I'm sorry but saying "mistreatment is mistreatment no matter the degree" and then mentioning newjeans and gaeun in the same sentence is ridiculous. Gaeun was allegedly sexually assaulted and put on hiatus and then when everything came out it was announced she would leave the group. Thats not comparable to newjeans situation at all.
Don't be ridiculous. He's not saying sexual assault is the same severity as being ostracized by management. He's saying all mistreatment regardless of degree is unacceptable! Do you not agree with that?
@@scanspeak001. Stop being condescending with that last part. 2. If thats what he meant then he should've said that, cause i interpreted mistreatment is mistreatment no matter the degree as all mistreatment cases are the same level of severity, but then again English isn't my native language but so many others who like kpop also have another language as their first. That's why it sounded to ME like he thought the cases were on the same page cause there's minimal context. I've said my opinion and uh feel free to disagree and keep commenting but i won't answer cause nothing more to share.
@@scanspeak00yes, I’m noticing many Kpop fans are from countries where working conditions are just as bad or worse than Korea, so they often misconstrue things and become subordinate to the corporate powers.
because it is?, newjeans is being SABOTAGED by HYBE, having private predebut videos of them leaked to dispatch, using illit's name when they were never mentioned to bring up the "plagarism" allegations again, passing up on collabs to give them to other HYBE groups (PinkPantheress collab, Fortnite collab), believe it or not, being sabotaged by your own employer IS mistreatment
I dont think, what KG's alleges doesnt happen outside of East Asia in competitive industries like ballet, gymnastics, modelling, etc. The main difference btw Korea and the US is that there has been a cultural shift happening against powerful abuse/abusers. There was the trial against Nassar by US gymnasts, child stars speaking out like Jeannette McCurdy, the "Quiet on Set" documentary, etc. All of this proves to victims that some justice is possible and some parts of the public is ready to support them.
2,,,I live in Korea and know K-pop in detail, but no trainee, parent, or media criticizes this,,,because everyone lives like that in Korea,,,if they feel pain from 12 hours of lessons and dieting every day, they are no longer in the company, and if they feel abuse or pain, the company will kick them out before that,,so they only get a short trainee experience and return to being ordinary people,,and then they will try to find another job,, Only about 10% of trainees enjoy the glory of debuting as singers,,90% They say they dropped out,,,In fact, there are so many male and female trainees in Korea who dropped out in the middle,,But it is not treated as a social problem.
What I'm confused about is, we all saw how korea protested against martial law and the president so we can clearly see they know how to get shit done. How come no one does it for a better future and quality of life?
@@AC-ri2ph It's because most people know but don't really care to do anything about it. We all know this stuff happens but kpop fans still support their artists and in turn the industry. The lawsuit is against JYP USA. It’s not against JY Park the person, or against JYP Entertainment the company. So the only one “in trouble” or liable is JYP USA.
When this lawsuit came out I cried because VCHA deserves the world. I watched the competition show when the first episode was being aired on UA-cam. The heart, the friendship, and the growth was so beautiful. I know people think that their music/concept was “childish” but it reminded me of the early 2000 teen girl groups like Play. I feel like they filled that gap for teen/tween pop music that we don’t really have nowadays in the American mainstream. I wish all the members happiness and success, even if it’s not in JYP/as a group, and that justice can be found in this situation.
I feel you on this comment. Watched them form into VCHA from the very start of A2K and fell in love with the girls. They are authentic, talented and so relatable. I too wish them the best. I do miss them, everything is just so unfortunate.
I loved there music and a2k but I hope all the girls get out of jyp and I hope they’ll be ok I don’t mind them disbanding or anything I just hope they’ll be ok and get better and get out
Yall i really need an update... because this feels like a cliffhanger EVEN SAVANA SISTER. Have me confuse on the situation with the way she had post "you don't know the full story so don't jump in conclusions" or something beyond those lines. What will happen if it was proven true? OR. What will happen if it was proven false? I literally need updates and everything its really killing me ALIVE.
Abuse =/= "cultural". Im not a fan of this kind of framing by media and commentators. Every creative industry, where (teenage) girls (and boys) are present, is a place where abuse is known to happen.
I've been a casual American Kpop follower since 2008. I was attracted by the synchronized choreography and the excellent production, but turned off by everything I don't have to spell out here. I've followed all the crossover attempts with interest, including a2k and vcha. I thought it was a bad idea when I tuned in to see JYP driving down PCH in his Mercedes convertible, and confirmed when he gave a long lecture about the character the girls needed to represent HIM. I thought Korea would never really accept the group and that JYP's arrogance and control would doom the group in America, but I never imagined he would be so clueless about American laws and norms. I feel that global success will lead to needed reform and reckoning in Kpop, but damn, I didn't think it would go down like this. JYP would be smart to let her go and settle it. Unlike Korea, court proceeding in America are public record and provide for large punitive damage awards.
most of it is culture shock... western music scene and korean/japanese/chinese are galaxies apart from each other specially/specifically the 'idol' culture. to westerners, the idea of 'idol' is as straightforward as performers who both sing and dance. nsync, ariana, michael jackson and the likes. its as straight forward as being a pop artist. 'idols' from korea/japan/chinese has cultural significance that has actual history behind it which can be traced with gisaeng/geisha/geji (not to be confused with prostitutes). the 'training system' isnt simply invented by kpop. it was inherited from those early historical times where young people are literally sent away from home to train them to be said gisaeng/geisha/geji (again, not to be confused with prostitutes).
westerners simply doesnt have that. the closest there is are broadways, but even with that, they are straightly seen as performers while gisaeng/geisha/geji has actual cultural and historical ties. the easiest way to understand it is to see how idols are adhered to on japan. simply put, idols are almost akin to soft cults where the idols are revered very highly. as hard to understand it, there are people who revere the idols they follow almost as their religion (and thats not like how westerners be just liking an artist overdramatically) summer camps could also be comparable. but then again, summer camps are just that, camps. difference to katseye, katseye, though build by hybe, knows that western music scene is inherently different than korea's. katseye is not a kpop group, they are a western group. thats why if you look at the kpop idols that has foreign blood, those who have survived are the ones that knows more about korean culture, while those who are more foreign/western are more likely to fail. there is this specific case where a former kpop idol grew up in the us, moved to korea, but never fully cope with the korean culture. everything about the system made him/her feel as if the whole country was bullying him/her. s/he now gone back to us and has made an interview lately where s/he has come peace that its culture shock, s/he never fully coped up with the culture. s/he is thankful for the experience, and in a way s/he is at peace theres no one inherently at fault, but theres no denying that s/he got broken because of that experience. as for vcha, keep an open mind. to understand the whole story you have to open your mind and listen to multiple sides. not just from kg's, not just from jype usa, but from multiples sides. sure, kg might have stated that there are member/s that tried to off, but without hearing that side's story from that specific member herself, then you are really just hearing a story from kg's perspective and not from the person herself. its not black-white. im not defending any of the side. i myself am neither a westerner nor a korean/japanese/chinese. but i myself has experienced bad cultural shock that caused me a few years of my life. on those few years i also felt that i was somewhat mistreated. i myself became depressed after that, even started my sui*****l tendencies and has spiraled into my life even at present... but as i start to heal up and move on from it, in retrospective, it really is the difference of culture and perspective. i simply am not fit for that environment and if i had forced myself to squeeze myself to fit on that mold then sure, maybe i could have fitted that mold, but at the same time, i needed to be an entirely different person for that. only those who can transform themselves to a different person can go through that, i myself admit that i can not and did not... two groups that i think is handling their multi-nationality members really well are lsfm and unis. as for kpop based western groups, the only way it could succeed is not force the group into kpop standards and just keep them western, like what katseye is doing.
Man this video was honestly horrible. 20 minutes in and it’s just you and Jeff dancing around the topics and relying on cultural differences as an excuse. Just because cultures are different doesn’t mean that negative aspects of said culture should not be scrutinized. Harsh treatment of children during training should not be permitted regardless of the culture. Denying children water, or rest when injured should not be allowed under any culture. Providing proper care and treatment for children undergoing emended stress should be provided to prevent in instances of self harm.
When JYP shifted VCHA from an American girl group to a “Global” girl group, I was kind of pissed, because as ridiculous as it may sound, I wanted to say, “This is OUR American Kpop/JYP Girl Group”, and that was kind of taken away. That said, the ONLY song I liked was XO Call Me.
3.. Modern Korean society and culture is extremely competitive and only pursues victory,,, This is a structure where the winner dominates the loser by winning the competition, and this is a military culture,,, Now China has imported this and is almost doing the same,,, So are Koreans originally like that? No,,,,, It was the complete opposite,,,, Korea was dominated by the current American or European values 140 years ago,,,, Then, including Korea, experienced the current Third World being conquered and dominated by Europe and Japan 300 years ago,,, and the values of Koreans changed dramatically,,, The values of Koreans today are probably the thought system of the Mongol Empire 600 years ago or the Europeans of the Age of Exploration approximately 300 years ago. We (at the same time) The reason why the Chinese reject and fear your country's values is based on our historical experiences in the past,,
Long post warning btw. People saying it must be culture shock then this gap should have been bridged and this responsibility falls heavily on JYP Entertainment and JYP USA sides. The trainees should have been provided cross-cultural training. While the trainers should have had both cross-cultural and cultural competence training. You want a global girl group you got to have these in place. The training personnel is provided and chosen by JYP USA. Did it never occur to the Agency to recognize the delicateness of the situation? Knowing VCHA members were young, probably never traveled outside of the United States, and maybe out of their parents supervision for the first time. I know for a fact JYP Entertainment limits the communication of trainees with their parents and it would take months or years for these kids to reunite with family. (see Jackson Wang of Got7 in Roommate - former JYP talent) What JYP Ent is doing is getting Americans and taking them overseas and putting them through the K-pop training system in Korea. This is a girl group that is "global" on surface-level only. 16:54 - Sure there will be a lot of figuring out as things progressed but to not hold anyone accountable is WORD VOMIT and irresponsible to say. Jeff would definitely hold someone accountable if he was put under alleged conditions. So the conversation to be had should be within the framework of the lawsuit and the allegations there in. The wording is problematic. 29:44 - For a decade fan of K-pop to say the industry is turning for the worse, I say, "Are you sure you were in K-pop for a decade?" The K-pop industry has always had that exploitative element because it is so normalized in South Korea. Culturally they are built to endure such treatments and are blind to such transgressions to their rights because they are shamed if they complain about such. Oh wait...Jay Park, a Korean-American, tried before he agreed to leave 2pm. It is no secret that the K-pop industry has always been vicious and nasty exponentially more so in the eyes of the west and to this generation. However we have younger generations that are more self-assured, empowered, and socially-aware. Even I tell my children to stand up for their rights and report until action is taken. Now they are adults they know to always have the American embassy's number of any country they travel to and the nearest police station to where they are staying. My kids will sue and will have proof backed up to the cloud. 33:06 - "No one needs to accept any blame"? Oh my goodness. This is not about accepting blame because doing so will not serve JYP Ent or JYP USA in court. It has gone beyond that. Maybe nothing will happen to JYP USA and JYP Ent that they will continue business as usual. But at the very least this has been brought to light so if it happens again then it becomes proof this is the way JYP Ent and JYP USA truly does business. What I would like to know is if the contract that VCHA has was with JYP Entertainment or was it with JYP USA. What is also not mentioned in this video is JYP USA's statement where they officially said "JYP USA will take all necessary measures to ensure that neither the other members of VCHA nor JYP USA suffer further harm as a result of this matter." This is a business statement. JYP being socially tone deaf once again. Read past statements made by JYP Ent and now JYP USA and you will see their statements are majority of the time lack accountability and sincerity. So if you're a K-pop fan for more than a decade like I am, I say pattern of behavior. Still, Jeff Benjamin should know, since he has been a decade in K-pop. Edited only for order.
27:43 NewJeans weren’t mistreated. Their claims don’t hold up. All they’ve done is make live videos and have press conferences. If they had strong evidence like KG did, they should’ve filed a lawsuit. They’re still using ADOR and HYBE’s resources-hypocrites. I don’t get why you keep saying they were mistreated. Ignoring or not greeting by one or two people from a different label, or not letting Min Hee Jin come back as CEO, isn’t mistreatment. Their assumptions aren’t mistreatment either. Get that in your head. They’re causing more harm than helping anyone or any artist. Everything they’ve done is for their Min Hee Jin mom.
Fr all I see is massively successful girls who were manipulated by a long established controversial woman trying to do media play and think they can do what they want lol.. reality gonna hit them hard
I hate MHJ as much as the next person, but they were seemingly ostracized from the rest of the Hybe family at the behest of other artist managers encouraging their groups to not interact with them. We may never know what really happened (there’s many sides to a narrative but the truth has to be in the middle of all of it) though I do agree that the livestream just made their situation worse and risked getting themselves entirely blacklisted.
You are assuming they weren't mistreated when they themselves have said that they were on multiple fronts. I get it, you have your own opinion, but trying to force it on other people is absurdity.
@@KatieT97 hanni only claimed that 1 manager told 1 member of the group to ignore her, not the entire "hybe family." it might've hurt her feelings, but even she didn't claim it was that deep.
@ithoughtiwascishet1316 WRONG. The ostracising and undermining of not only all the girls of NewJeans but also mistreatment of the ADOR staff has been an ongoing issue for 3 years. Such claims can be difficult to prove, especially when management deliberately erases video footage of incidents . Bunnies look forward to HYBE taking NewJeans to court where all the truth can be exposed but I suspect HYBE will be terrified of what will be revealed and the PR nightmare so may just reach an out-of-court settlement.
Gen 5 / Gen Z & Alpha of K-Pop idols aren’t taking it lying down and good for them. Hopefully things change for the better. I don’t think k-pop training needs to be this brutal for fans to enjoy the performers.

Why does everyone assume that the things KG is suing for took place here in the US? The girls did originally go to South Korea for their training before Debut! We all know if we are honest about it, that Koreans can be very racist against other countries. Even Americans with Korean heritage have found themselves excluded from being "Korean". I believe what has happened is a mixture of Korean racism along with American sensibilities which are just not compatible. I have followed the entire journey of VCHA from their auditions to their disappearance. I stated even back at the beginning, that I doubted it would work out because Americans aren't raised in the same manner as Koreans. Their are very distinct cultural differences in many ways. Korean work ethic allows far more latitude in what is acceptable behavior from an employer than what an American companies allow. Maybe JYP thought that because the girls were young and had almost no experience that they would adapt to the Korean way of doing things easier. Maybe JYP is just blind to the behavior of his staff in regards to training idols. Whatever is the cause, thank fully, K Pop in the US as a popular genre is dying down, it may or may not survive this, time will tell. But at least it will serve as a wake up call to all the starry eyed little kids, that K Pop is not an easy path to stardom. However most teens don't know the first thing about any of this so the more information these kids can access and know it to be fact will help them make better decisions regarding careers in the Entertainment industry no matter where it is !

This may put other members on the spot- they may get subpoenaed. and. have to testify, Also hidden cameras may not necessarily be illegal if it was included in their contract-You need a scrupulous lawyer to read all the fine print before signing and wonder if that happened. Well JYP USA they really just need to settle with this one IMO to lessen the flames I know giving away 100 thousands or million would suck. And would set a presidence for future lawsuits for minor labor laws in entertainment industry here in United States.

@Real-ranchia I think you just don't like VCHA. They are actually very talented and well rounded. They have many fans in North America, btw. I went to Twices Las Vegas show to see them and let me tell you, they are near perfect Live. VCHA has the potential to really be something big but with the cultural difference in trying to train Americans in a Kpop system, that concept probably did not mix well.
2,,,Idols who are trained in the American way, such as 6 hours of lessons a day, or who are trained and spent their days, will probably give up and disband in the middle.,,,This is because they have low skills and lack patience, so they often abandon the team and drop out.,,, They are thoroughly trained in the music market and have strong Korean girl groups with mental and physical strength have to compete with them, but it is clear that they lose in the competition in the American style,, and then the company goes bankrupt due to a huge amount of debt.
I really think she came on to the show blind, didn’t really know what K-pop is at all. But that’s not to say her feelings about it is not important or meaningless, however this lawsuit will probably be irrelevant to K-pop in general because nothing is going to change about the idols training life.

@ this is the comment section- a comment was made about the vid. Has nothing to do w priorities. Its pretty obvious what JYPE did to minors is fucked- obviously
To foreigners who criticize the K-pop training system // 1,,Korea is originally a society with a high level of work and pressure, and it would not be against or negative to give 12 hours of lessons a day to aspiring K-pop trainees. Rather, most Koreans would think, [Why on earth can't I get 12 hours of lessons a day?? ],,,you will think like this,,that is Korean,,,Koreans are people who believe that nothing is impossible,, ,,that is, even if it is against the law in the US, it is not illegal here in Korea,,,there is no such law,,,the Youth Protection Act prohibits work after 9pm,,,but the lessons that trainees receive are not strictly work,,
There's nothing at all wrong with any of that, in fact, a lot of Americans or other Westerners feel and work the same way. The disconnect for me is the abuse and neglect. No minor should be refused water, forced to perform while injured, spied on to see what their eating... there's just boundaries, as human beings, that shouldn't be crossed. Especially when success can still come without having to resort to such drastic measures.
I understand what you're saying. But JYP gave all of those things up when he made a group in the US. He made an agreement to abide by our laws and conditions. But nowhere in the world should children be denied nourishment during the years when their body and brain is still forming

Yes. This is because in America, the artists have the power. There isn’t a “training system” here. Artists make music themselves and companies compete against each other to sign them.
I disagree, idols are trained from young age before they are shown to the media but vcha was different and I bet there were also on tight schedules to be perfect in their choreo, vocals and dancing.I think the girls needed time to adjust as they are young.
personal opinion: JYP was out of it's element going to the U.S., and I knew they would crash and burn! WHY??? Well... let's start with the children ... or teens. They are spoiled coddled and don't and will never have the kind of stamina & strength like a young Korean teen does. WHY... because that is not how they are raised when it comes to working, studying etc. So, for JYP to think... EXPECT for them to create a KPop girls group here is automatic FAIL!!! South Korea has a strong family upbringing & dedication to working hard to get ahead & NOT being spoiled and things handed to you. Even, families that are barely making it.. (unless raised on a farm) will coddle their children. Yes, we may have those kids that have become football, soccer, basketball players.. but how hard do they work to get to that point. Plus, they aren't required by contract to work so many hours, diet etc. JYP or any KPop Agency coming to America doesn't have Child labor laws, which again ... if you read them, it's coddling. So.. it's best that if JYP or again any KPop Agency wants to really have American girls/boys to train to become KPop idols. #1: It should be required to have them live in South Korea with a contract that is approved by the parents and their personal lawyer (that understands those type of contracts) before sending them to South Korea. #1.1: This Contract should NOT be a permanent ... but a trial. Hence ... 3 years at most. If within the 3 years and these teens have debut already, and have a fanbase & become popular, yet one or all of them decide to complain about mistreatment, abuse etc .. then it should stipulate that, they will be released from contract, with owing at least 85% of what the agency put into their training, housing, food, clothing during concerts, debuts etc. They will then have their passports revoked and returned to America. Also, it should be stipulated, that they will not be eligible to work for that agency again for the next 10 years. #2: Allow the parents/lawyer & teen to view the living situation & dietary needs. #3: Make sure they ALL understand that there are Strict working schedules and how many hours it will take each day. #4: If and ONLY if the agency feels that the group are experienced enough to Debut.. they will have their 1st Debut in America. 🤣🤣Well, at least this is what I would have offered. This way.. .it will show the American teen, parents etc.. that this is not a agency that will coddle them.. that in order to become a KPop idol, you have to work just as hard ... if not harder than all the other KPop idol/Artists have. Understand, Korean children are not coddled (unless they are filthy rich) Students/Teens are raised to succeed & that takes hard work & dedicated, as well as respect for oneself, parents & the company they work for. Soooo... JYP... Nice Try!!! However, you learned the hard way.
Oh you guys work for them to try to do damage control so that international fans will go back to trusting and liking this jyp guy huh, I wonder how much you guys get paid for this, must be pretty good sum
4,,,In my opinion, the US and Europe, which value human rights, consider K-pop to be a diverse and negative cultural shock. It causes,,K-pop and Western society could not coexist and people overlooked this point,,They are so different and conflicting and K-pop clearly clashes head-on with the ideology and ethics of Western society,,In fact, it is true that K-pop has many vulnerabilities built in,,,Of them, girl groups are the most opposed because many young girls are accepted into K-pop girl groups,, Dramatic measures are needed now,,,The governments of each country in the US and Europe should ban K-pop from being imported and spread within their countries, and K-pop fans in these countries should voluntarily join the boycott,,,,In other words, it seems that a measure that is necessary is to ban the spread to the US and Europe,,Of course, other regions of this world will be exported and consumed as in the past, and it will only give a small blow to Korean entertainment companies.

Only about 10% of trainees enjoy the glory of debuting as singers,,90% They say they dropped out,,,In fact, there are so many male and female trainees in Korea who dropped out in the middle,,But it is not treated as a social problem.

Liked their songs! Loved Savannah, I really liked how athletic she was. I'm sad they got so intense pressure to slim down
Only one is good but their other songs are too childish imo
It’s cute but it’s for a younger audience in my opinion I’m 28 so lol
Yall i really need an update... because this feels like a cliffhanger
EVEN SAVANA SISTER. Have me confuse on the situation with the way she had post "you don't know the full story so don't jump in conclusions" or something beyond those lines. What will happen if it was proven true? OR. What will happen if it was proven false? I literally need updates and everything its really killing me ALIVE.
Can you please upload a “What happened to Seunghan and RIIZE”?
I would like to see that also
Abuse =/= "cultural". Im not a fan of this kind of framing by media and commentators. Every creative industry, where (teenage) girls (and boys) are present, is a place where abuse is known to happen.
This is why you’ll never excel in life. You’re so self entitled.
Want a American kids for America Kpop group you gotta play by America rule.
So true it’s quite disrespectful too
most of it is culture shock... western music scene and korean/japanese/chinese are galaxies apart from each other specially/specifically the 'idol' culture.
to westerners, the idea of 'idol' is as straightforward as performers who both sing and dance. nsync, ariana, michael jackson and the likes. its as straight forward as being a pop artist.
'idols' from korea/japan/chinese has cultural significance that has actual history behind it which can be traced with gisaeng/geisha/geji (not to be confused with prostitutes).
the 'training system' isnt simply invented by kpop. it was inherited from those early historical times where young people are literally sent away from home to train them to be said gisaeng/geisha/geji (again, not to be confused with prostitutes).
westerners simply doesnt have that. the closest there is are broadways, but even with that, they are straightly seen as performers while gisaeng/geisha/geji has actual cultural and historical ties.
the easiest way to understand it is to see how idols are adhered to on japan. simply put, idols are almost akin to soft cults where the idols are revered very highly. as hard to understand it, there are people who revere the idols they follow almost as their religion (and thats not like how westerners be just liking an artist overdramatically)
summer camps could also be comparable. but then again, summer camps are just that, camps.
difference to katseye, katseye, though build by hybe, knows that western music scene is inherently different than korea's. katseye is not a kpop group, they are a western group.
thats why if you look at the kpop idols that has foreign blood, those who have survived are the ones that knows more about korean culture, while those who are more foreign/western are more likely to fail.
there is this specific case where a former kpop idol grew up in the us, moved to korea, but never fully cope with the korean culture. everything about the system made him/her feel as if the whole country was bullying him/her. s/he now gone back to us and has made an interview lately where s/he has come peace that its culture shock, s/he never fully coped up with the culture. s/he is thankful for the experience, and in a way s/he is at peace theres no one inherently at fault, but theres no denying that s/he got broken because of that experience.
as for vcha, keep an open mind.
to understand the whole story you have to open your mind and listen to multiple sides. not just from kg's, not just from jype usa, but from multiples sides.
sure, kg might have stated that there are member/s that tried to off, but without hearing that side's story from that specific member herself, then you are really just hearing a story from kg's perspective and not from the person herself. its not black-white.
im not defending any of the side. i myself am neither a westerner nor a korean/japanese/chinese.
but i myself has experienced bad cultural shock that caused me a few years of my life. on those few years i also felt that i was somewhat mistreated. i myself became depressed after that, even started my sui*****l tendencies and has spiraled into my life even at present... but as i start to heal up and move on from it, in retrospective, it really is the difference of culture and perspective. i simply am not fit for that environment and if i had forced myself to squeeze myself to fit on that mold then sure, maybe i could have fitted that mold, but at the same time, i needed to be an entirely different person for that.
only those who can transform themselves to a different person can go through that, i myself admit that i can not and did not...
two groups that i think is handling their multi-nationality members really well are lsfm and unis.
as for kpop based western groups, the only way it could succeed is not force the group into kpop standards and just keep them western, like what katseye is doing.
Mentioning Gauen from Madein in the same sentence as NWJNS is ridiculous.
True
For real
Even VCHA's situation is comparable to new jeans...
Tampering is not a crime?
Man this video was honestly horrible. 20 minutes in and it’s just you and Jeff dancing around the topics and relying on cultural differences as an excuse. Just because cultures are different doesn’t mean that negative aspects of said culture should not be scrutinized. Harsh treatment of children during training should not be permitted regardless of the culture. Denying children water, or rest when injured should not be allowed under any culture. Providing proper care and treatment for children undergoing emended stress should be provided to prevent in instances of self harm.
agreed, very disappointing video
Cameras? Secret recordings? These men are sick.
Stupid marketing move to limit a Kpop group as American Kpop group, a complete oxymoron.
(see Jackson Wang of Got7 in Roommate - former JYP talent)
What JYP Ent is doing is getting Americans and taking them overseas and putting them through the K-pop training system in Korea.
I hope this will change up how jype operates internally

NewJeans weren’t mistreated.
Isnt it also illegal to delete footage recording with the knowledge that it could incriminate you?
I hope kg wins, the girl deserves so much better
Only lazy entitled gen Z Americans think that.
Gen 5 / Gen Z & Alpha of K-Pop idols aren’t taking it lying down and good for them. Hopefully things change for the better. I don’t think k-pop training needs to be this brutal for fans to enjoy the performers.
I hope jyp debuts a group that’s over 19. It’s a lesson learned
I really think the minimum age for trainees should be 16.
"ya'know" counter when?
Not sure why is there barely any attention on this or the case with gg member reporting sa attempts and getting removed
jeff benjamin didnt answer a single question, dude is completely media/pr trained and this video literally accomplished nothing. raising awareness on eddie from n.ssign or gaeun from madein would actually help empower voices
Dude you REALLY need to do your research when you do a video. Twice went on their FIFTH world tour, NOT their 3rd. You got ALOT of wrong content in this video, you really need to take it down
Kpop artists should be treated better.
I also noticed when watching A2k that KG wasn’t into kpop at all was only really want solo career I felt
I hope kg wins the lawsuit they deserve better
I hope not.
Why not? That’s not very nice people are getting abused and you think that’s ok?? Wow
@@nolanfamily1858 you’re believing one side of the story without knowing the other. Kpop idol training is harsh. She knew what she was getting into as any other Kpop fan knows the training process. 19.KG panicked for the right and wrong reasons
20.you can check the VCHA vlogs their not supposed to but KG and KENDALL EBELING are competing with one another
Vcha is love and so sad for the girls.

Thank god this was in California USA because imagine if this was in Korea? Dismissed as always and looked down upon k-netizens
3,,,,Since the company is completely denying the lawsuit filed for KG's abuse, it will just end as a mere incident, and because of that, the company's plan to create a localized group in the US will probably be abandoned,,,,The company should not have applied such Korean methods to Americans,,,,KG's fault was that if the training and life were that hard to endure, they should have consulted with the company, terminated their exclusive contract, and dropped out,,The same goes for any member who attempted suicide,,If the suicide is true, it is regrettable why they did not drop out before,,In fact, many K-pop idols drop out even after debuting,,,,Of course, they do not pay a penalty.
What I hope they can do for their comeback is either bring Yuna or Melissa as group members because they were definitely some of the fan favorites
Will VCHA disband or wait for the situation to settle before attempting a comeback?
Their response made it sound like they had no plans on disbanding
So far none of the other girls had said anything, I’m guessing they are still planning on their comeback, but kg is probably just gonna be doing lawsuit for the next couple years 😢
This may put other members on the spot- they may get subpoenaed. and. have to testify, Also hidden cameras may not necessarily be illegal if it was included in their contract-You need a scrupulous lawyer to read all the fine print before signing and wonder if that happened. I wonder if they are working with Christina to get her back as she made statement couple months ago that VCHA will be coming back and not to worry.
If they were "hidden" cameras wouldn't that mean they were not mentioned in the contract?
I doubt changes will happen for the good for either case. Sad but true.
Well JYP USA they really just need to settle with this one IMO to lessen the flames I know giving away 100 thousands or million would suck. And would set a presidence for future lawsuits for minor labor laws in entertainment industry here in United States.
Actually mellisa is my favorite among the girls
I cant hear the voice nathan
As a East Coast American kpop fan myself that had listened to kpop for about 18 years, and I remember girls generation preforming on American shows, wonders girls nickelodeon movie, and rain starting in ninja assassin. I like when already established groups come to America but I don't think we need new American kpop groups. I've never been a fan of vcha and also can't stand groups like katseye. JYP should focus on the artists he already has. I miss 2PM and MISS A!!❤
Girl what katseye do to u 👴
I actually think VCHA and Katseye are a great concept. Being an Asian American and a fan of Kpop from the HOT and SES days, I was extremely excited for VCHA and saw each and everyone of those girls in me when I was a teen. The potential is there but maybe the world isn't quite ready.

In my opinion, they should have disbanded at least within a month after releasing their debut song or right after Kaylee left,,it was a failure in the company's decision-making or corporate management.,,It was foolish,,
That's a ridiculous opinion they haven't even released an album or fully used their potential and for what they had released they did fairly ok and they definitely are talented and have potential you're basically telling them to give up before they try anything

1,,Korea is originally a society with a high level of work and pressure, and it would not be against or negative to give 12 hours of lessons a day to aspiring K-pop trainees. Rather, most Koreans would think, [Why on earth can't I get 12 hours of lessons a day?? ],,,you will think like this,,that is Korean,,,Koreans are people who believe that nothing is impossible,,
,,that is, even if it is against the law in the US, it is not illegal here in Korea,,,there is no such law,,,the Youth Protection Act prohibits work after 9pm,,,but the lessons that trainees receive are not strictly work,,
There's nothing at all wrong with any of that, in fact, a lot of Americans or other Westerners feel and work the same way.
@@kdogpa1 To be fair, the water refusal thing is actually incredibly common in athletics and performance art, even in the US (not that that makes it right)

In K-pop, the reason why idols have to comply with the company's unreasonable demands or instructions //
1,,This is because the company provides the funds for their training and debut,,Idols are just performers,,All rights belong to the company,,,Idols share the profits with the company,,,
If an idol wants to reject the company's instructions and do as they please, they can start their own company, take lessons with their own funds, and debut.,,This is the American way, but this American way has failed.,,,
In the case of a dispute between KG and the company, if they feel that the company's demands are unreasonable, they can just leave the company and give up being an idol, or they can work as a singer in a company they created with their own funds.,,
Yes. This is because in America, the artists have the power. There isn’t a “training system” here. Artists make music themselves and companies compete against each other to sign them.

bad for JYPE, but good for korea, as it proved, kpop idol can only made in korea.
I disagree, idols are trained from young age before they are shown to the media but vcha was different and I bet there were also on tight schedules to be perfect in their choreo, vocals and dancing.I think the girls needed time to adjust as they are young.
personal opinion:
JYP was out of it's element going to the U.S., and I knew they would crash and burn! WHY???
Well... let's start with the children ...
Oh you guys work for them to try to do damage control so that international fans will go back to trusting and liking this jyp guy huh, I wonder how much you guys get paid for this, must be pretty good sum
jyp never did anything though it was the staff that was mistreating and abusing vcha
4,,,In my opinion, the US and Europe, which value human rights, consider K-pop to be a diverse and negative cultural shock. It causes,,K-pop and Western society could not coexist and people overlooked this point,,They are so different and conflicting and K-pop clearly clashes head-on with the ideology and ethics of Western society,,In fact, it is true that K-pop has many vulnerabilities built in,,,Of them, girl groups are the most opposed because many young girls are accepted into K-pop girl groups,,
Dramatic measures are needed now,,,The governments of each country in the US and Europe should ban K-pop from being imported and spread within their countries, and K-pop fans in these countries should voluntarily join the boycott,,,,In other words, it seems that a measure that is necessary is to ban the spread to the US and Europe,,Of course, other regions of this world will be exported and consumed as in the past, and it will only give a small blow to Korean entertainment companies.
I have been shouting this to Koreans for a long time,,,I hope you will join this movement too.
What are you going on about? Im truly sorry to break this to you, but those of us in the western world will continue to enjoy kpop and promote human rights in the industry, even if you find it to be a conflict of interest. Crazy you think only westerners think this way, when many korean idols have spoken out about it. You forget Sulli and Goo Hara so easily?
@@Real-ranchia Go shout it to literally every kpop company in Korea who uses worldwide album sales/tours to ensure profitability. Just look at KIOL, was being made fun of for not being able to sell enough tickets, in Korea, yet sold out every show in the US, plus added shows, and are now going to Europe. Even BTS owes it's success large in part to the US and Europe. Seems like a lost battle yelling all this nonsense tbh.
