    Man, you're psychic! I've been working on a composite and wanting to blur the background when I finished and couldn't figure how to do it selectively. Then this tutorial showed up. I hope I will able to follow it.

    Being new to PS, I was looking at how to do this very thing yesterday. So thanks for this video, I still find it pretty overwhelming as a newbie.

    Amazingly amazing 👍, can't wait to try this out. What a great tutorial, it pretty much puts an end to the worries in the field in regards of blur (imo).
    Thank you so much Colin 👊

    Thank you Colin for continuing my education into the wonderful world of Photoshop. I've been using Photoshop 5 for years ( and have got fairly proficient ) and am about to take the step into 2020. I've been looking at lots of tutorials on line and your approach means I've got a lot of things to try when I launch CC later this week.. All the best T.

    super tuto !
    why doesn't raw have depth mask ?
    can you speak about heic ? no idea what it is. i have an iphone8 and it seems to take pictures in heic synchronized to LR mobile. is it better than jpg ? should we definitely use heic instead of jpg because less destructive ? shoudl'nt i convert my iphone to come back to jpg to be sure it won't be deprecated in the future or not recognized ? does iphone 8 have depth mask ?

      Marc Labro I belieber iPhone 10 was first to have it. It’s a format that supports better compression fir smaller files and alpha channel support. Don’t believe you can write to it yet

    Great tutorial. I shot sports for years with Fuji s100fs w 28-400 fixed lens. Sold many enlargements and had to manually create background blur for every one of them. Selection tools weren't near as good as now so i'd just dup the layer ...and keep it on top ...totally masked, then make another copy of the background and fill where the important subjects were. Then blur that layer and apply a gradient to it for depth then go to the top layer and using white ...reveal the subjects. Got pretty quick.
    This is nice and will get quicker with use.
    The big problem is it clearly illustrates camera manufacturers should be depth mapping photos in camera. My cell phone creates lovely blur effortlessly and there is no excuse for todays expensive cameras to lack features found in most cell phones. The phones are killing the industry and it needs to be slapped upside the head to wake up and get back in the game.

    Can similar effect be achieved with field blur ??

    • @photoshopcafe
      @photoshopcafe  5 років тому

      Yes, if you mask out the image, sure. Lens blur also has the ability to add bokeh, and gets the most realistic result, albeit more work, so the field blur is totally a valid way, however, it won't define mid-ground planes though without adding an additional point and masking.

  • @biancadupont2931
    @biancadupont2931 5 років тому +1

    so I tried to do this on one of my own pictures. not so lucky. will try again but it's way to much effort and I think just using a simple blur gallery gets you about the same place.

    Would adding a Tilt Shift Blur to the background not do something similar after selecting out the subject?

    • @photoshopcafe
      @photoshopcafe  5 років тому

      Not really, a tilt shift is designed to give a slice of focus, so it gets sharp again, not a realistic background, but good for miniaturization. You can use 1/2 of it, but then field blur would be much better for that. I'm curious, did you learn that somewhere? Because this is the second time recently, I've seen someone mis-categorize a tilt-shift. Not saying you can't do it that, you can if you want, but there are better ways.
