- This compact PA subwoofer test features the Bose Sub1 versus the RCF 702 AS II versus the Behringer B1200D. I placed a decibel meter one meter away from each sub and measured the SPL level for each sub at clipping. I also monitored the current draw (power in watts) in real time during the test. This not only gives us a good idea of which sub has the strongest power amp, it also helps us determine what size battery pack is needed and how long it can potentially run.
And the winner is.... I won't spoil it for ya - check out the video and see for yourself!

To get closer to the manufacturer's measurements you must measure in decibel C because the Decibel A does not measure low frequencies well.

The berhinger is the best budget sub I got two and the bass is really deep chest pounding when paired with a good mixer owned 4yrs and still pounding hard

I’m not quite sure if the way of testing is very useful/comprehensive, but it gives us a good idea about what to expect from this loudspeakers with “real life”-usage.
To me the Bose is not a winner, as it uses almost double the power to generate 0.3 dB more than the RCF and rougly 3 times more than the Behringer.
In general i have so far never been really impressed by any of the Bose products - from my personal opinion: You buy Bose like a Rolex to impress by the brand … you buy RCF to impress by the sound … you buy Behringer to safe some money in the beginning … but need to invest twice to become a pro!
I have used RCF L15 P 200 Low in my youth to drive a huge folded horn bin - amazing speakers!
I am using a Behringer B 1800 D Pro at the moment in combination with a Yamaha Stagepas 400i to get some low end for some smaller wedding gigs. The Yamaha system sounds amazing and benefits in clarity, because the sub cuts all the low end below 120 Hz from the satellites. The Behringer needed to be an 18” because smaller sizes have no real low end!
I bought everything on ebay and have an amazing sounding system for exactly 665,- € now!

The 18” Behringer seems oversized, but was the cheapest option. I run it in boost mode at 40 Hz, upper cut 120 Hz, … and level is at 20-25% only !!!
… of course the 18” isn’t really perfect up to 120 Hz … but in this low range you don’t really notice …
The Yamahas sound amazingly clear, crisp and smooth compared to other satellites. Especially when you combine them with a subwoofer, so the power mixer and the Yamahas can focus on the 120 - 20.000 Hz range only!
Makes an amazing sounding package for almost no money!
I would totally recommend it for weddings and parties up to 100 people - without the subwoofer only 50 people (and nearly no bass at all …).
… and fits perfectly in a VW Golf size car if you put the rear seats down!
Watts & Dezibels don’t replace knowledge and clever combination!
btw: my wife is a really good singer! For singing and acoustic guitar i would totally recommend the even older Yamaha Stagepas 500 system, as the sound of the 10” woofer between 100 Hz and roughly 2000 Hz is better than the sound of the 8” woofer in the Stagepas 400i.
Comparing current draw and spl, it looks b1200d more efficient in term of power consumption.
The bass from Bose subs always sound hollow to me, but they get loud. The RCF sub hits hard on both kick and low end but their lower models like these seem to clip very early IMO. Every gig I've performed at where someone did sound with Behringer subs sounded like garbage, they had no heavy low end, I didn't even like this model as kick monitors for the drummer, they were weak.
the bose 10 inch active subwoofer is the good combine for rcf sub 702 as. the rcf sound were punchier and the bose sub is smooth at the same time.

I have both Bose Sub 1 and Behringer B1200d. The Sub 1 seems to have a slight audible delay on the low end beat when compared to my Yamaha top boxes . I am very sensitive to this as I use this set up as a backing PA system while I play live music. The Behringer is not as deep, but the bass drum sound hits tightly on time. Is this due to some sound processing lag in the BOSE, or the Behringer's higher efficiency, or maybe the BOSE is trying to move more air at lower frequency, which has more inertia. Feels like a phase alignment that is just a few milliseconds out.
Search "Group delay" and "transient response" problematics.
Its because its an odd horn.loaded design, sound moves through horn, can cause delay.
If Behringer put their 12 in a little bit larger box like the RCF it would perform deeper but they decided to keep it as compact as possible. At the price point the Behringer is a better buy. Personally I wish the cabinet was close to the size of the RCF to get that added lower frequency response.
I have Behringer b1200d. I can buy Bose sub1, but I want to know your opinion about it. I did not listen the sub1 on live, do you think this change is a good idea? Does it worth the money? Is the quality sound difference very noticiable? I will spend money and I need to know if the upgrade will be very noticiable (sound quality, volume, etc)
It's noticeably bit louder and deeper than the Behringer. For me, it's size and weight combined with the added depth made it worth it. I also use them with other Bose products and am sure they are more compatible (crossover, etc...) with my setups. If it were just a matter of the volume / sound - I'm not sure it would be worth it. 25 years ago when my budget was much smaller and my back was much stronger - I would've gone with the B1200d's and not looked back.
Two B1200d subs stacked would give +6dB and cost less than either of the other two still. I have the B1200d. It doesn't go very low, but it is pretty incredible for the cost! A little heavy though. I'd be interested to see how low they all go in reality.
Thanks for sharing! I didn't test their low-end frequency response, but it is noticeably higher than the Bose and RCF. The Bose hits lower than all three.
@@bestproaudio4255 cool, this is a good little test. have you used any other subs? I have a first gen. DXS15 that is very loud and not too bad for low but i was thinking of getting an RCF 705 as an upgrade, as it is lighter and supposedly sounds better and goes lower
If you add a sub it gives +3db.
For +6db you need to quadruple the power because the db scale is logarithmic and not linear.

I love RCF, but i bougth a sub1, Ihave a pair of S1 Pro and this fits eficiently with them.

Does the less max current draw of the RCF compared to the Bose mean I can use a smaller external battery pack? I have had trouble with my 400 watt unit with the Bose. Would it run the RCF better? You really need to try the EV EXL12-SP. $800 more power than Bose at least on Specs. What I really like is the fact that is Bluetooth controlled by App and has different modes and can save scenes. Great video as usual! I think RCF 702 is 42lbs specs are different on different web sites.
It does. You should be able to run the RCF with it no problem. My 500 watt packs will power two Sub1's and a Pro 32 - but will trip if they are pushed too hard. Let me know what you find out!!
I've been curious about the EV subs - I've been focused on portability and they seem to be about the same as Behringer / RCF from that standpoint. It's really hard to beat the Sub1's when it comes to portability!

well now am looking for a Sub.. which one i should go for. Bose Sub 2 or RCF 702.? This is for my backyard sound system
I'd go with the Sub 2 for sure... It has twice the power of the Sub 1 and will definitely blow the 702 away.
I think the bose is horn loaded, the otheres are front loaded....horns go louder, but can get weird bass dropouts in certain parts of a room.
The Bose is not horn loaded. I think it's a factor of newer tech and design.

Do you notice any hiss when the Sub1 is connected? A friend bought 2 Sub1 to go with his S1Pros. When either Sub1 is plugged into an S1Pro, there's a huge amount of hiss from the S1. I also plugged the Sub1 into one of my Yamaha DBR10s, and the same hiss is evident. The output from the Sub1s are very noisy. Do you have that issue with yours?
I don't... What type cables are you using? I have no hiss at all when using mine.

If you use 1/4" cables they must be balanced...
@@bestproaudio4255 Thanks for the reply. XLR cables are used. Have tried different ones. Used the same cables to connect my EV ELX200 12sp sub to my Yamaha top without issue. Also connected the EV sub to the Bose S1Pro, totally silent. I've read a couple of forum posts about people having the hiss issue from the Sub1, trying to find out how widespread it is.
Have you tried them separately?

Out of the three I recommend the Sub1 by far... For its size and weight it packs the biggest punch of the 3. It is so easy to carry because of its form factor too. Like a suitcase... I can carry two of them as easy or easier than carrying one B1200D. In this video it seems like it clips easily, but that's not the case. The Behringer clips the easiest, RCF is second, then the Sub1. Due to the obvious power draw and higher SPL it definitely has the highest powered amp of the three despite the specs. Manufacturers play games with those numbers anyway... Glad you enjoyed the video!!

@@bestproaudio4255 I agreed with your assessment. Actually, Bose sub1 is not that expensive considering its features, light weight, and portability. I really like the fact that I can use it upright or horizontally. Its sound is tighter compared to other sub that I also have (LD systems and EV). I wouldn't mind to spend extra 200 for what Bose offers. And No, I'm not a Bose fan. I'm actually a JBL guy (through my experience with JBL guitar and PA speakers). But for the subwoofer sound, I'd have to give the credit to Bose.
Doesn’t this mean that the Sub1 has the least efficiency as it takes by far the most power to create roughly the same dB? Definitely an impressive unit in all other respects for its incredibly low weight/ small size.

Hi, behringer has a bass boost switch, if I turn it on it sounds louder, but am I thinking of not affecting the speaker? Thanks .
That is correct - You can boost a certain frequency (a separate knob to select frequency boosted); however, the limit light will turn on when the amp clips - regardless of the frequency boost...

I'm not sure - I haven't tested the Sub2... It's double the power - I believe 3db is double the power, so the Sub2 should be 102.8db based on this test. I would also think the power draw would be roughly 360 watts to produce 102.8db.

Bose is lightest 35 lbs, draws most energy....$899. Rcf is over $1k, heaviest.....Behringer is 42 lbs, draws half the energy, only $299.....you can buy 3 for the price of the others......they should have included harbinger s12 in comparison.

No, the current draw is much higher, but only lasts a very short time
The Behringer can be had at a good price but I don't think it's good enough for pro usage. But I think that it would be ok in a home setup for someone doing parties at home, etc. It's better than no sub.
As mentioned the form factor for the Bose is very nice. It carries like a suitcase and has good performance. However the price was out of my range.
The RCF's performance is very close to the Bose and cost less. It's certainly pro quality and road worth. All of these subs are very small and would pair best with 8 or 10 inch tops.
As far as the SPL goes, you can take -6db off of the manufacturer's SPL rating which is a calculated rating not real world. So for the Bose 124.6 rating subtract -6 and we get 118.6. This would be the real max and you would hear clipping and distortion.
That Behringer sub actually performs pretty well... I was most disappointed with the RCF for the money. At least with the Bose Sub 1 it is truly light weight and easy to store and carry...
I have two RCF 705 which feature 15 inch woofers. The weight is right the max that I can load by myself at 62LBS. It's nice and compact and plays very nicely. Another deal at that same price is the EV 18 inch sub which weighs the same and is priced around the same.
I was looking at the 702 for an even smaller sub than the 705. At this point I might would prefer to tote two 12 inch subs rather than two 15's or a single 18. At $950 the 702 is priced way high. My initial reaction was to get it since I have done well with RCF.
But instead I got the EV 200 12 inch subwoofer. It's small and compact at 42LBS. I am pairing it this weekend with a JBL IRX12 for a bluetooth setup. And yes, the folks are paying me for this.
I may get a 2nd EV 12 sub but at $800, it is not cheap. I like how it sounds for a small setup. I also like the fact that it can be stacked if I ever get a 2nd one.
The Bose Sub1 is coming in at $900. Then there is the Sub2 coming in at $1300. That's some real money but it looks like a great portable sub for most of our needs. The Sub1 plays out like a 12 inch. The Sub2 plays out like a 15 inch according to Bose. At 42LBS, that's some great performance!
@@13bcoffee In my opinion the 35.5 lb Sub1 outperforms the RCF 702 ... I haven't tested the EV ELX 12" Sub - But it has similar specs to the RCF. The only real downside to the Sub1 is that you are limited to the size speaker that can be pole mounted on it. It is expensive - but the portability is really what I'm paying for.
@@bestproaudio4255 Don't believe Bose! They say weight limit is 15lbs to sell only their S1 Pro. I mount my QSC K8.2 27lbs- no problem/ super stable!

Based on their specs it is. It's definitely deeper than the b1200d... RCF doesn't provide the -10 dB frequency data...

I use to like rcf but didn’t think much of 705as mk2 no way 700watts or 700watt driver
I haven't tried the 705as, but based on my tests, the 702 performs like its 350 watts... The b1200d would be 250. Im taking Bose at their word on 480 watts for the Sub1. I'm sure it's peak watts vs rms watts - marketing BS.

@@MobilediscowirralCoUk I've owned numerous Bose PA's and the speakers always seem to outperform their "wattage rating". Of course you have to look high and low sometimes to find a rating (Bose L1 Compact), but they don't try to hype their equipment with high wattage numbers. The power draw meter in my video is what convinced me - and I was really just finding out which Lithium Ion power packs would work for each speaker.

The meter you use in this test measures only active power, so your result are not truly real...
I'm not sure what you mean. When comparing the values from sub to sub, it is possible to tell which speaker is providing the highest output.
