That's close to 10:1 power to weight ratio. Absolut beast. I just purchased all original 67 bug with 1500 motor and had it dynoed. 37 hp to the wheel. Not bad for an 50 years old car and it feel so good driving her. I have 991.5 GT3 with 497 hp and Huracan LP580 spider with 580hp so no need for more cars with speed. Sometimes, it feels good to just chill doing 30 mph lol. Cheers
Well to put it in perspective, my '63 with a 2276cc basement build runs consistent 12.60's. I imagine it's making close to this power, probably a little less. Full bodied all steel and still only 1600lbs max. 1.90 60ft times with stock 165 radials and 1.59 with 6" slicks. All the weight over the drive wheels in the back equals killer holes hole shots!
I used to slip rubber tubing over the main air bleeds and use holley jets stuck into the tube. I had a set of air bleeds I drilled out so I could use the Holley jets and save myself some money and have jets avaliable to tune with. Once I tubed all the corrections togeather and ran the tube inside to an adjustable main jet for a Solex. It would change the mix on the fly, but it had to vacuum down all that tubing. they like fat in the middle and lean on top. I believe a set up close to the carb
I just read about a rallycross beetle with 4x4, using a modded porsche 915 transmission with extra shaft for front diff, it also used turbo and subaru legacy cylinder heads with 4 valves per cylinder and duel overhead cams; at 2.5 bar boost it had 500bhp and upset a lot of other more fancy car drivers!!
@plasenciapedro I dare say it would be some sort of adhesive such as belt grip. From the looks of things, they were having traction issues which wouldn't surprise me seeing as Beetle's are so light which would also be why they had guys standing on the running boards
ya the float bowls are hanging between the 2 barrels of the carb.. its what takes up the space and holds the 2 barrels together providing fuel for both. there often regarded as having 2 carbs shareing a common bowl. i cant see the floats themselves if thats what your refering to because those are infact in the float bowls out of view unless you pull the upper plate.
Think about that the engine in that thing is a design thats more than 60 years old. For ancient technology and a motor that small, 162 is pretty much incredible.
@torino390 Theres usually a direct correlation between the speed of the engine and the cooling, i.e. the higher the rpm the faster the fan is spinning creating more cooling. i would imagine though if the engine was at high rpm for a long time then there would be a cooling issue.
neat that's what I have 2276 cc but only 140 bhp on single Dellorto highway gears and 40 mpg highway with 14 gallon petrol tank and still strong for 20 years since 1984 freshen it up @ 253 k miles just put in new bearings etc and thinking of turbo charging it now >^.^
you mean IDA look at the float bowls and how the linkage is mounted along with the spacing between the 2 barrels! my bets on 48IDA's possibly bored 51.50mm
its owned by peter and paul harold, sponsered by autocavan. its in may 1997 volksworld, quite an old magazine. it has subaru legacy ohc heads and jawa speedway bike liners in porsche barrels! 450-500bhp on 2-2.5bar boost! its a rallycross beetle.
This this is bad ass! What people don't consider is power/weight, this thing would rip @ 162hp. Also these things are relatively cheap to build up compared to a modern engine. $6k would buy a cb performance 2332cc kit and some nice carbs and be running 200hp in a car that weighs 1800lbs. Do the math.
@lowlifelivin NO it was to get the tyres to grip because it was wheel spinning on the dyno..........if you were there you would have seen the dip in the dyno graph where wheel spin was evident
I've just learned of a Beetle that has a roof chop, weighs just 700kg and, most importantly, has a Corvette engine in the FRONT. That's the way to do it. Back at ya, hate mongers.
Good day! The 4th generation Accord (1989-1993) had a choice of 4 different 4 cylinder engines, but no V6 was available for that generation. . . I think you meant the 5th generation which had a V6 (C27A4) as an option. But this car does look slick as it is; also you're speaking of water cooled engines which means running hoses and heat exchangers galore (otherwise you have nothing to cool those other motors).
the car is tied down so they dont need to stick the tires to the dyno. they just want it to keep from bouncing around not to make it stick. they car is so light that it keeps bouncing. watch the video again and pay attention. like at the 0:07 mark when the car shifts
almost forgot, it had a garret T4 turbo, weighed 1030kg and ran A arms and macphereson struts front and rear. Theres another less radical one with a 1930cc running 48ida webbers and a 320 degree cam, 140bhp that one.
@hunterziegelmann my stepdad has a meyers manx with a stinger. he just purchased a different style exhaust and wants me to install it. sounds like ill be taking a bandsaw to the stinger soon lol ill try to remember to come back here and tell ya how it sounds
i am building a rotary bug. dudes at rotary usa ported and built my motor. they said it should make 200-230 hp. i dont think i realized what i was getting my self into :) sick bug tho!
@MyLifeRSC i got no beef with england. my whole argument was there are better sounding cars than the vw beetle (in my opinion). high end italian cars for example sound good. with the right exhaust, a built KA motor sounds good. audi's 2.7T sounds amazing when paired with the right exhaust. i could go on for days. but in the end, your right, its preference.
Stock transaxle will handle 300hp if it's used sensibly. And 162HP in a bug would be a friggin' major adrenalin trip. More fun than a Mustang and here in NZ WAAAY cheaper to do the bug than the v8!

Hello I'm from Brazil and an admirer W's bug, congratulations for the work you do in your workshop, one day I will get close to these wonders.
Wow this thing looks amazing , well done guys !

It's the best VW air-cooled sound I EVER heared!!!!
My pops had one that looks very similar to this one. Definitely in my top five cars.
Gorgeous car. Very nice!
this guy is crazy that's awsome
I got too excited watching this!
Absolutely awesome.

Great looking bug.
Man that is one awesome bug! Makes my 1835cc '71 S bug look like a Daihatsu Charade!
Nice car . good sound . need straps to keep it on the rollers though.
Sounds nice and sweet at high RPM's
powerful little car!!!
it took 1 guy in the back seat and 2 others standing on her to keep her from leaving the shop....POWER!!!
Ok, that makes sense, thank you for educating me...no seriously, thanks!
I always had respect for the beetles cuz they whoop ass. most people underestimate these cars..btw nice tie down straps...
Sounds awesome! VW all the way! I like the tailpipe! I wish I could have a car like this :)
Still love this video
fantastic!!!!!!
Man that thing sounds super responsive.
Awesome Bug
That's a F*#@ing awesome ride.
Wow, 163HP net, that's really good
Yo yo ya , joy ride!
I Love It! Saweeeet Ride!!
@plasenciapedro I dare say it would be some sort of adhesive such as belt grip. From the looks of things, they were having traction issues which wouldn't surprise me seeing as Beetle's are so light which would also be why they had guys standing on the running boards
this is how I want my beetle to look in a couple months =D
Enjoyed the video, hope to get an engine close to that on my trike.
Wow Way To Tie The Car Down There Buddy...Smart...
they are awesome now ;)
My favorite bug on UA-cam

WAAAAAOOOOOOOOOO NICE MODIFIED NICE I LIKE THIS SOUNDD
stinger exhaust ftw :D
Still, power to weight ratio. = Insane!
lovin that zaust!

it's very very good..
@loveanianimeme
Stingers are a really high performance exhaust, yes. They actually give you quite a large amount of horsepower, too.
Cool way to spread the armor all on your tires, hehe...
maan, I use to have a 1966 bug, sure miss that car.
Sick beetle... :O
That sounds so freaking AWESOME!! what was the peak rpm hit on the dyno?
power to weight ratio = zoom baby!
Love it 😎
if ur looking for the rallycross beetle its MAY 1997, small feature near front.
neat that's what I have 2276 cc but only 140 bhp on single Dellorto highway gears and 40 mpg highway with 14 gallon petrol tank and still strong for 20 years since 1984 freshen it up @ 253 k miles just put in new bearings etc and thinking of turbo charging it now >^.^
Flexing its muscles at 2:26. This car is hot!
you mean IDA look at the float bowls and how the linkage is mounted along with the spacing between the 2 barrels! my bets on 48IDA's possibly bored 51.50mm
Geeze... That is damn impressive!
Curious what compression it's running and how thin the walls are.
me gustoo...primer escarabajo que me gusta...no soy amante de esos autos pero este...esta muuuy bienn (y)
its just incredible to see a bug with all that work on it. I just
its owned by peter and paul harold, sponsered by autocavan.
its in may 1997 volksworld, quite an old magazine.
it has subaru legacy ohc heads and jawa speedway bike liners in porsche barrels!
450-500bhp on 2-2.5bar boost!
its a rallycross beetle.
All that for 162.8 horsepower. Fun
Got that right!

*_246 hp/ton_*
nice tie downs

Nice.
Respond to this video...Nice job on the chop, it is 'just right'!! Door panels look cool too!!
Haha @ 2:51 "Wanna borrow ma fingeeerr"
yulllll are best dey
I've just learned of a Beetle that has a roof chop, weighs just 700kg and, most importantly, has a Corvette engine in the FRONT. That's the way to do it.
Back at ya, hate mongers.
Amazing how light it is considering it need all those people standing on it to weigh it down.
@pattyaaron A 49' Beetle gets 34HP at the Crank stock, not sure what model this one is but i hear the late 50's early 60's get 52HP at the Crank.
162HP at the wheels is fantastic for a normally aspirated type1!!! Great job!!!! Can I ask what lift cam you used and what size throttle plates?
love cobra's(: and VW's!!!!!!!!!!!!

No problem man, just wanted help you out :-)

@pattyaaron 50hp at the crank, about 35hp at the wheels.

@fasttruck93l souped up vw with straight cut gears!..awwww music :)
@The420Guru haha good catch, and funny
I'd say you'd be perfectly straight for owning a Beetle. I'm not sure if owning a Beetle was always cool or not, but they're cool now.
Great.
162 hp + 2500 pounds with driver = mustang killer
niceeee!!!
Super
@crazycolby68 I am simply amazed at the number of people who do this w/o straps with all the videos of cars coming off dynos on YT.
THE BEST BEETHE I LOVE YOU ...FOREVER !
Very nice engine ! What cam are you running ?
Is that guy sparaying traction compound from an aresol can? Cool, never seen that before.
i am building a rotary bug. dudes at rotary usa ported and built my motor. they said it should make 200-230 hp. i dont think i realized what i was getting my self into :) sick bug tho!
auuuu Fenomenomenalno
thanks you einstein knowitall
batman is back
No straps anywhere?
