The most powerful thing about this poem is how well it has the effect of being read by a crazy person, you hear her words and the points being made (and a lot of repitition), but you tend to drift off and not be sure whether you missed something she said or if it made any sense at all
It made perfect sense. It was a story of how it was to how it is. Even how it got that way. Her lose of mind was from trauma, but it’s not a type of insanity that can be misunderstood. Anyone can snap from being hurt over and over again. This was also to show how drinking makes you speak your truth freely. The repetitive saying “I used to be in the world” shows how she wished for those days. How those memories are all that she has left to keep her alive.
@@lambsquad_9047 Actually I like that thought. Ntozake Shange's brilliance in giving us nuances about this woman's life experience that toughened her and turned her into an evil spirit. It would be very interesting to trace her life prior to moving to the world she describes. She says being nice has proven itself to be a rip off. That's why she can't be nice anymore. She's avenging herself by being what she has become. And she finds it odd that young women seem to live happily in the outside world, yet when this seemingly perfect world goes pear shaped, they resort to her and her services.
Macy should have gotten an OSCAR for her performance. ❤️
Agreed
Such a powerful scene
Thank you for upload. ❤
This is one of my favorite poems from the movie.
Macy was phenomenal. My goodness.

Didn't realize how much this movie fckn creeped me out until the next day.
Who knew?
The alcoholic demon... macy gray. Scary shit..
Love this black and white version and the dramatic background effect.
Soo good
Was Macy Gray's character raped? Was she a prostitute? What was her story?
+Lambsquad_90 She was an abortionist.
itsjemmabond What trauma did she go through before that?.
Lambsquad_90
She probably was a hooker and drug user; it's been ages since I saw the film.
