Watch the Ma interview: 10 yrs to find his chi, 30 more to figure out how to use it. I had 12 yrs martial arts before starting tai chi 24 yrs ago - and I struggle to understand and do 1% of what Ma could do. This is a lifelong pursuit, not a simple trick to be mastered in a day. There is no secret to playing the piano, yet how much effort would it take to become a premier concert pianist? Ma was the best. I appreciate that this video was posted and hope it inspires some to follow Ma's path.
Things to remember when you watch this video: • He is 93 a here and is one of the most respected 20th century masters of any martial art. • this demo of tuishou principles uses skilled students who politely exaggerate for the demo. It's not a fight. • No 93 year old would enter the UFC and no MMA fighter worth their salt would challenge him. • I have spoken to people who crossed hands with Master Ma, and he was still formidable, even in his 80's. He quit taking challenges before he turned 90.
I had only ever read about Ma Yu Liang in magazines and books. His skill is amazing! What a treat to see. Completely comfortable where he is - he doesn't waste a single movement. Thanks Newtype x2.
This is the highest level push hands video I've so far seen on UA-cam. Small movements are better than large movements, no movement is better than small movements. The video shows that Ma's level of chi development was so high he was able connect his opponent's imperfect central equilibriums and thus completely control them even at a distance once contact had been made.
To add. Taichi chuan is all about movement. If something is stationary it take great force to move it. However, Taichi uses the motion already in flux to affect direction. Through relaxation you can become hard as a mountain or softs as cotton. These principles are universal, and they work
If you want to experience everything first hand, the knowledge you'll gain will be limited by this fact. Look at the setting, the age of the man doing it etc. I think things like these are treasures and real. Just because it is not documented and not understood my modern science, it will not be known by all. I am grateful for this.
Ma died about 1993. His senior student Wang Hao Da died 2003. Search for their students in China (Beijing?). They are not the only ones who train this style, but I don't know any others by name. I seriously doubt anyone you find will have Ma's level of skill. Wang Hao Da had amazing abilities, yet said he had only 50% of Ma's ability, even after many, many years as his student.
actually there's a good explanation. Pause it on 00:49. If you look at the younger gentle man you can see his torso is not above his feet but way behind it. When the younger guy moved in he just moved forward and took the space. Once a person is off balance there's no way they can resist.
The problem with people commenting all these bad things about this master is they themselves have never met anyone at this level. They are very hard to find. I have found masters that can do this and it is real. Very complicated what they are doing and no you can not learn this over night. Even if you pay one million dollars. Even they teach you can you understand the teaching. Tai Chi is the hardest art I ever learned. But the most rewarding.
How it is done: 1) Begin with the practice standing meditation - a minimum of one hour a day, every day, for one year under the guidance of a qualified teacher. 2) If you complete that course you will not need any more advice from me or anyone else on UA-cam!
I can assure people doubting this that this IS real. I have been privaledged enough to push hands with people of great ability, like this guy. Its simple physics of using even the slightest overbalance or unrootedness of an attacker and maniuplating or adding to it at exactly the right angle and exactly the right force. You can send people meters with just the flick of a wrist at the right point, that is what practical internal martial arts are all about.
FYI - In his younger days (1930's)Ma Yueh Liang traveled across China as a freelance martial arts teacher engaging in a number of life and death combats, emerging victorious in each without having to kill his opponent.
Tai Chi is about internal power and push-hands is not a martial technique but rather a way to refine one's energy. Push (not to be confuse w/ push-hands) is a counter technique for the shoulder strike. The reality is that Chen style doesn't cultivate internal power. Chen style is Shaolin Boxing with a bit of Tai Chi thrown in. In brief, some members of the Chen Clan of Henan Province wanted to cash in on Tai Chi's popularity so they invented a false genealogy and put forward their mish-mash of..
Chi is most effiently cultivated through standing meditation which, in addition to the above eventually unifies the body into a single unit. Once this is accomplished (after at least 10 years)in addition to a strong outer frame - Yang Peng, one will the have beginings of a robust inner frame - Yin Peng, which is what we see Ma using in this video. Ma could stand in a cat stance while 6 people pulled (or pushed) his empty leg without being able to budge him. But this is only the foundation...
people have no idea what they are witnessing... this is one of the most dangerous masters of all time. He would unequivocally ruin any opponent when he was alive
Here is where you err. Taichi chuan doesn't block. The principles adhere then redirect force to return it to the person giving it out. This prevents a tai practioner from injuring themselves while letting others defeat themselves with their own force.
@mrtempertantrum it's not. it's an energy that can be calculated, but not yet found. it flows through the body and emit force. Same to gravity( can be calculated too)
@nithorry Very well thought. This video shows more truth than most of the other movies. This master is only in small part 'played upon' by the opponent, who might be respectful to him for his old age (try to imagine the Chinese way of honor to elders). The force this master has in his arms (however it seems too much external power) gives him more genuine power then I have seen in many others. Indeed, don't criticize, yet be critical, until proven otherwise and then, still know that tomorrow...
This particular master is known for his use of energy, which makes the body respond in strange ways.. I wouldn't be so quick to judge this video as "depressing" or misleading.. Obviously the most peculiar part is @ 2:02.. Watch the old man's right wrist at the very end of that move.. you can see him "release" the guy, by pointing his hand upward, and thats when the guy falls... Thats very subtle, and would be hard to fake/time, if one was trying to..
if you still don´t get it, you are not able to distuingish between arm strength and whole Body strength because you lack the knowledge of what connection is ... because your teacher didn´t have the necessary skill to show you that connection, don´t blame other people, like i said, you should have watched that link i posted, maybe your brain would get what redirecting or neutralizing is about "low-level skil, that´s for the kiddies" he´s damn right. answer my questions pls ...
shoppingacounts, the taiji master in the video with the asian champion wrestler is master Huang Sheng Shyan. He as well as master Ma both took challenges into their advanced age. I train in master Huangs style but I love to watch master Ma pushing hands, very internal, very empty. you can find some more footage of master Huang through my youtube channel ( andymach33 )
Push hands isn't a fighting style it's an exercise. In a street fight a tai chi expert would wait for the other guy to attack. Which in a street fight is a huge possibility. But no it wont stop bullets, it'll stop them from being fired hopefully.
I have been practicing tai chi for a while. I believe this guy to be ligit. This is an exercise to learn to attack your opponents center/ balance. There are other skill building drills for fighting that must be practiced to be able to defend yourself...from my experience anyway. As far as kimbo he is a scary fighter and I do not look at who can beat who cause I think Kimbo would work lots of people, even master, I look at martial arts as building skills for fighting and this is a ligit skill.
As far as the the Macau fight, Wu Gongyi's skill was infinitesimal compared to that of his father, Wu Jian Chuan who once took on the challenge of a famous western wrestler (also in the 1930's) severly trouncing the man repeatedly to the point where afterwards the wrestler wrote an article in a western paper in praise of Wu's Chinese boxing skill. That my friend, is also the truth.
for those who said "there are certain physical laws" dont u understand...this is using physical laws to your advantage...i dont blame people here for not beliving...6 months ago...i was among you...but then i actually went to a class with an open mind...and it works... see every single time the guy goes off...
I'm not sure who posted this but yes ma was definatly great ; ;... sifu. my one regret is being born in a different area of that country. and being unable to study under him.
@smr144 Chen style is very very combative. I just practiced with a group of Yang practitioners in Riverside California and they are very very good. I see a lot of similarities in Yang and Chen style. The palm is face outward in Chen style. There is more snapping movements, more Chin Na. Or equal Chin na. The people in Riverside encompass a lot of Chin Na in their Yang style. They are very very skilled.
@aldridge1 Here's an explanation: Ma Yueliang is returning the force his partners are giving him. Hence, people with internal power (e.g. his students) go flying while people without integration don't. Is it then true that Taiji is only effective against other Taiji practitioners? No, because a receiver whose structure collapses will be open for a hit. The receiver who bounces is in a safer place. That said, there are ways to bounce an untrained person. I see it done all the time.
try tai-chi and learn pushing hands if you can find a notable teacher (difficult in the US, most US teachers I found are the couple year-trained tai-chi "masters"), in years of practice eventually your master will demonstrate with you and to you how real internal power feels like
Thanks for posting this. Ma is the real deal. But pushing hands and fighting is two different things. I'd like to see him fight. If it is anyhting like Wu Gongyi's fight in Macau in the 50s, then an average local western boxer in the 50s would knock him out easily, and a wreslter would do the same. That is the truth
@dekal1 All pushing that I have seen in chen style and even many so called yang styles is physical pushing/physical strength. Can you post a video of Chen tai chi pushing hands with real internal power? I would like to see it.
lets put it this way.. u can push a huge rock when its just barely balancing on the edge of a cliff much more easily than u can push it along the ground... tai chi's motive is to first learn to maintain your balance..and then get the opponent off balance..and [in this case] push... see every single time the volunteer moves away...you can make out he's completely lost balance..
@smr144 Its all real internal power if the person is practicing correctly. It is a very combative style. Not very much pushing involved but a lot of locks, breaks and throws. A lot of Fa Jing. Snapping type of Fajing built from silk reeling.
For 12 years,Ι trained in kung fu(Fu Jaw Pai). When it started to tiring me, I tried the Wu style, so actually I understood the difference between power-technique .... Annyway I practiced in Tai Chi for 3 years and master Wu's students were very good teachers...
if kimbo tries to hit him in the face actually kimbo could end up in the hospital with a broken hand, because kimbo it's merely external technique to wester culture an old man is symbol of weaknes or slow reflex, this art makes people loose their balance by knowing when to push acording to the position of the oponent's hands
I think the master was controlling his jing, so as not to make his students "fly".. and I think the reason is because he didn't want to dirty his student's clothes..if you look more closely they aren't exactly at a training hall or something, more like they were on a social visit. Great master! :D
Sukiari is right. I tried it, and there was absolutely no difference in the force I had to absorb, whether there was 1 or 2 guys pushing! I recon the same would be more or less true with 5 or 20 ppl in a row. You only have to be more stable and rooted than the first guy, and disrupt his balance a little. Having several ppl all pushing directly on your body is a bit harder, but it still it's more about redirection of force than physical strength, applying your root and power in a more clever way.
I know there are people with skills like that out there. I was doing pushing hands with a friend who studies ishin-ryu and he knocked me back a bunch of times with a simple shove from his forearm or hand.
you seem not to have a clue my friend, this is 101 whole body usage and force vector manipulating. beautiful, not fake haha ;D your opinion is for sure not based on knowledge
This was great, been searching for "learning powerful methods to build your Chi energy" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Fellmeroni Rudimentary Chi - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my colleague got excellent results with it.
@smr144 I practice Chen style and we have Peng-Jing. I wondered the same thing when I picked it up. History has it that ChenWangTing tauht Yang Lu Chan, and I believe he said, you can teach this, but you can't teach Chen family. You have to call it something else. Because Every artist is different, Peng/Jing techniques were probably added by Yang Lu Chan or maybe were emphasized on it. I don't know, but Chen XiaoWang head of Chen village says it was Chen Wang Ting and Yang Lu Chan. I dont know.
@menith. Ok. So you're saying there is some sort of chi being used to allow him to violate standard physical laws? That goes beyond Newtonian or even particle physics? Essentially, "magic"?
Interesting. Yang Peng, Yin Peng.... How long have you been standing? And why dont the Wu clan teach standing meditation and say their routine is the same? All interesting questions. After practicing internal arts for many years, Im a skeptic. Like to discuss things like this though :-)
Normally I do not respond to comments on videos, but I had to jump in on this one. Medulla, how does this violate the law of conservation of energy? I'm just curious, since you seem to have a background in martial arts and understand the principles of Tai Chi, how it violates the law of conservation of energy. I'm also curious as to why someone wouldn't be able to defend themselves with Tai Chi? This is a training exercise to used to develop grounding and a feel for your opponents as well.
u want the physics side of it?..then here u go...when u do push hands[its a part of the art form which requires two people]...its a test for balance..the more balanced u are..the better u can resist the push..the random people he calls do not know tai chi..so they are not able to keep balance..thats why theyre skipping and hopping so much..trying to maintain their balance..u put in a little force when ur opponent is off balance..and the force u put is multiplied..
if you would like to see the higher levels of taiji i think you should see wee kee jin he come to norwich at 28 march not got long comes to the uk twice a year good luck on your way
It's not so mysterious. The key is two parted, proper rooting and sensitivity to lines of force. It takes tons of practice but anybody can reach this level of skill.
Guys let not bash on some one who doesn't know the former grand master of wu jian chuan jia chuan shi... he obvisously is learning a jiujutsu art and probably MMA...
That doesn't help either. Being a medical doctor says nothing about a person's understanding of physics/mechanics; that's analogous to suggesting a PhD Physicist knows about the effects of hormones on cellular respiration. Again, unless you are suggesting that his force defies the laws of physics for rigid and non-rigid bodies, then clearly something is amiss. Remember... these laws are universal - ie, they apply to ALL things which have EVER been tested by scientists.
Also, why is it that you train what I assume is a westernized martial art? What drives you to do so? It was Lao Tzu who said, those who control others are mighty, but those who control themselves are stronger still. It appears, at least from what I've seen on tv, that ego is something that is encouraged, which does disturb me a bit. When one possesses great power, in any form, they must also understand the responsibility to fellow man that comes with that power.
@simplyjbr I think you might be confused about the nature of the term "theory" in a scientific context, and the depth of testing which backs it up. This is as opposed to the colloquial term "theory," which means an idea or guess. This would be a hypothesis, NOT a theory, in science. Want to see a scientist's brain explode? Tell them you climate change or evolution are "just" theories! Also, I'm talking about laws of physics, not theories.
@dekal1 Really? If Yang came from Chen, why is that Yang doesn't look at all like Chen?? Because the similarities between Yang and Wu/Sung styles are obvious. Don't you think so? Why is that the biggest warriors ever in the history of tai chi, Yang Lu Chan and his progeny, are from Yang Style and not Chen Style?? Let's set the record strait: Yang Lu Chan learned his system from a man who's last name was Chen. But that doesn't mean that that there was a Chen family style.
no... he would get his fingers in his throat and killed the young fella before he could realise it. martial arts cant be compared to ring boxing. i respect both they are just not meant for the same thing.
Additionally, your suggestion of looking at a more complicated instance doesn't make sense. That would just be more to distract us away from the fundamental mechanics at work, right? Enlighten me to what these "necessary premises" are, please.
Things to remember when you watch this video:
• He is 93 a here and is one of the most respected 20th century masters of any martial art.
• this demo of tuishou principles uses skilled students who politely exaggerate for the demo. It's not a fight.

Fong could do it too!
This is 93 years of training and practice. Its not just some commoner old man, Ma Yueh Liang was among one of the greatest masters in china.
To add. Taichi chuan is all about movement. If something is stationary it take great force to move it. However, Taichi uses the motion already in flux to affect direction. Through relaxation you can become hard as a mountain or softs as cotton. These principles are universal, and they work
the beauty of taichi is that its a kind practice for any age; young or old can benefit
If you want to experience everything first hand, the knowledge you'll gain will be limited by this fact.
Look at the setting, the age of the man doing it etc. I think things like these are treasures and real. Just because it is not documented and not understood my modern science, it will not be known by all. I am grateful for this.

chi means energy. chi comes into everything.
actually there's a good explanation. Pause it on 00:49. If you look at the younger gentle man you can see his torso is not above his feet but way behind it. When the younger guy moved in he just moved forward and took the space. Once a person is off balance there's no way they can resist.

master ma , i miss him!
This is actually sooo good. I watched it a while back and thought the same. Now I understand more and I'm still thinking "Wow, so smooth."
I can assure people doubting this that this IS real. I have been privaledged enough to push hands with people of great ability, like this guy. Because Every artist is different, Peng/Jing techniques were probably added by Yang Lu Chan or maybe were emphasized on it. I don't know, but Chen XiaoWang head of Chen village says it was Chen Wang Ting and Yang Lu Chan. I dont know.
Dun take it down man. i love this
@menith.
Fascinating!
That, Your Highness, are pretty good insights right there! So, in what internal system are you training, and for how long?..
this is a China legend my friends
u want the physics side of it?..then here u go...when u do push hands[its a part of the art form which requires two people]...its a test for balance..the more balanced u are..the better u can resist the push..the random people he calls do not know tai chi..so they are not able to keep balance..thats why theyre skipping and hopping so much..trying to maintain their balance..u put in a little force when ur opponent is off balance..and the force u put is multiplied..
Thank you very much for this video!
if you would like to see the higher levels of taiji i think you should see wee kee jin he come to norwich at 28 march not got long comes to the uk twice a year good luck on your way
He is the real deal.
Me and the 93 year old! Lets have it!
It's not so mysterious. The key is two parted, proper rooting and sensitivity to lines of force. It takes tons of practice but anybody can reach this level of skill.
It says chentaichi.info in the left side of the video but this is not chen style. This is Wu style, which came from Yang style :o)
Great MAN! Great Master! Thank you!!
Hi!
I am a student of Ma's adopted daughter - Shi Meilin.
Do you have link for that article by the western wrestler?
Thanks
Michael
Very nice.
it's to bad we didn't get his stance into that picture would definatly want to see the stance that he did empty...
@dekal1 Oh, really... Why is that Chen style uses always physical push and not real peng-jing???
The last partner at 2:13 sometimes seems to over react and appears to be pushed when he is not. Was he faking it? Why?
Grandpa is scary Powerful HHAHAHAHA
still there are certain physical laws...
i would like to know more, where can i find him or his students
Also, I'm talking about laws of physics, not theories.
i could see that might be highly developed sensitivity... how does chi come into it?
It is so spectacular!!!, it is so incredible!!!! It is sooo incredible! so incredible... I don't beleive it's real :-(
But really though, there isn't any peng/jing in Chenstyle? is that what your saying?
does anyone know where i can learn this technique? I live in new york city. thanks!
But that doesn't mean that that there was a Chen family style.
lol he has so much Jing!
which part of this video are you referring to exactly?
93 years old О_о
What is Ma Yu Liangs lineage? Who did he learn from? Does he have students?
no... he would get his fingers in his throat and killed the young fella before he could realise it. martial arts cant be compared to ring boxing. i respect both they are just not meant for the same thing.
Additionally, your suggestion of looking at a more complicated instance doesn't make sense. That would just be more to distract us away from the fundamental mechanics at work, right? Enlighten me to what these "necessary premises" are, please.
