Watching you get triggered about bad sound stuff is giving me so much joy. I started out watching you explain microphone specs, bought 2 t.bones, and am grinning like a bastard over here. thank you for being passionate about good sound.
Maybe that last guy is actually giving people a reason to get a dedicated sound guy. A 'hack' that will get you sound so bad you'll be looking for a dedicated sound guy for your next shoot
21:30 the following is a visual representation and re-creation of what I look like whenever I see any sort of life hacks video. Yeah because I wanna make a glue gun that might actually burn down my house....
You should do a series akin to Myth Busters (Mic Buster? Sound Buster? Speed Buster? Myth Micster? you get it...) where you take those stupid "audio engineering hacks" and other points that frustrate you and test if a) the hack or tip works and/or b) how correct was your initial thoughts. Oh, and if you run out of material, there are PLENTY of busted DIY sound hack videos with millions of views on yt (but please wear fireproof shorts, because you'll surely burst in flames on most of them)
"We are on FIRE!" "You are an IDIOT!" 🤣🤣 Pretty sure if you can afford an MKH416, you could afford a proper mic mount, no? Also... I'm not a cine sound guy: would that be the right mic to plant for an actor in that situation anyway? Or-let's just assume for the moment that is a real set-might you plant a 416 if you were also booming one so that the tracks would be easier to mix for consistent sound? Anyway, thanks so much for your content; I really appreciate it and always learn something new.
As an indie filmmaker in the process of learning how to be a competent boom operator, this is my favorite new channel. PS: Question inspired by the idiot with cardboard cutout: when attaching a 416, 641, etc to a standard rubber shockmount/clamping mic mounts? Does it irk you when someone pushes a mic through a tight rubber mount front first; i.e., raking interference tubes?
Allen, you are obviously a kind person at heart, which is what makes is 10x more funny when you lose your s**t on UA-cam posers. I agree with you 100%, though. The amount of unqualified UA-camrs with little to no professional experience making a good living either giving incorrect advice or generic advice that anyone can Google is absolutely maddening. Anyway, your followers appreciate you for the professional resource that you are!
real talk - don't get worked up on Pop-UA-camr folks doing cray-cray stuff.. not worth the blood pressure man. Appreciate what you do and I've taken your advice when doing some audio works (admittedly I am at much more am-level, but still always good to hear the voice of experience to shortcut me from learning bad habits!)
Plus, if it is wireless, there is probably someone else monitoring the audio, which is why the boom op isn't wearing headphones. Although, he probably should be wearing them just for handling noise.
For the first video… IEM in left ear is possible? Last video was by a cinematography and vfx channel. His cardboard solution could have worked a little better if the cardboard was just more behind the capsule. A little more creativity in placement and shaping the cardboard could have made something workable. I think sometimes channels put out lists like this for algorithm purposes even if the content isn’t great.
Yeah, the algorithm helps bigger channels because they generate a lot of trafic despite providing good info or not. The cardboard on the mic wouldn't work very well at all as long as the front cardboard is blocking the capsule.
In the case of the zombie stuff, I guess I don't really get why the boom operator is there to begin with. Would there be much of any clean & important dialog when they are crawling or staggering around in the smoke? Especially with the guy in the gas mask - couldn't he just have a lavalier inside?
Regarding the first video. Unfortunately in my experience working small production in Europe, if we even have a boom that's not the mixer, they won't be wearing headphones. It's very rare that we'll have a second feed. Not even for the director.
One of our viewer send me to this video and apparently you got some serious frustration with us. Sorry if we hurt you in any way, just trying to make fun content for the world. I wouldn't take cardboard tricks so serious. Obviously it's a joke. Imagine you would get to set with your cardboard gear ;-) Anyways, I don't mind the critique, but please keep it respectful. Look into the mirror before you bash on someone...
You have 2.5+ million subscribers and have a lot of people watching your videos, trusting the info and "hacks" you provide. You can't claim it's a joke after you've exploited techniques for views. If it's a joke, say so at the beginning or end. Teach real info and you won't get such reactions especially from pros that work really hard to educate people on serious topics. As for looking in the mirror, I'm a content creator and fully expect to get hate from some people. The world is full of all kinds of people.
Watch me react to the Facebook videos. I'm understanding of the situation. If you claim a broom handle is better than a boom pole, I'll roast you. If you're making something work on a budget, you'll be surprised at how helpful I can be with suggestions. I was there once too.
Watching the zombie stuff was a little painful...shouldn't be struggling to extend your boom. Not trying to be mean, just more practical to go old school on those movements
Your reactions to the silly cardboard idea is seriously overblown. Your amped up anger and attitude towards someone suggesting how to quickly make a mic stand out of nothing is childish.
I’m going to write a super hero comic about filmmakers with exoskeleton boom mics and cinematic cameras instead of super powers
They would never be able to save anyone. Wouldn't arrive in time.
That seems much more like things a comic villain would use...
@@jonbuder all villains think they are doing the right thing. Well, most.

Sure thing. I'm glad you keep coming around... even if it's laughing at my frustrations.
Hack: “We are on fire guys”; Pro: “You are an idiot!” I appreciate your perspectives, insights, and humor!
Yeah, I got a little fired up myself after those Tilta videos.
Maybe that last guy is actually giving people a reason to get a dedicated sound guy. A 'hack' that will get you sound so bad you'll be looking for a dedicated sound guy for your next shoot
Maybe. I hadn't considered that.
Now I really want to see your reaction to the other 4 hacks 😂
Please, no. Just wait though... In two weeks I react to his 5 sound hacks video. Already shot it and... yeah...
@@SoundSpeeds something to look forward too then 😄
Can't be as bad as the exoskeleton can it, foreshadowing? @@SoundSpeeds

👍
Boom pole is an extension of our arms. So we can cue and maintain the mic right where it should be. Watching those guys using a rig was painful.
Tell me about it. Seriously enraging.
I literally couldn’t watch that tilta zombie video. I hate something so cringeworthy taking itself so seriously.
25:00 That moment was too funny, I was like..."oh God no! What Allen?! WHAT??"
I gotta see the sequel!
It's bad. So very bad...
"Sound Speedsss" is always so cool!
I'm far from cool but thank you.

LOL. Will do. Good idea on correcting bad DIY videos.
Geordy's probably also picking up the computer's fan noise over his voice. lol.
There are many issues... The more I watch, the more I see.

The mic matters less than the technique used. If you're able to boom, you should do that instead of using a plant.
One of my favourite style of videos on this channel.
They are interesting...
LOL! MORE of these. You were entertaining and educational at the same time.
Thank you and thanks for watching.
16:40 was hilarious. LMAO@ 21:56
This dude is going to cause me to have a heart attack.
He probably has a wireless transmitter like the Deity HD-TX or the Sennheiser on the end of the mic, inside the blimp.
I think there was a cube TX on the end. I saw it when watching back in post.

Not really. As long as it doesn't damage the mic, you're fine. Thanks for watching.
I thought you were going to have a heart attack on the last clip. very interesting
I was close...

I'll try. Thank you for caring and watching.

And communication from the mixer. Where the microphone is is not the same as where the boom op is. I'll cover this in the boom class I hope to make.
Your reactions are hilarious

Tilta scrapped the Zombie Rig
REALLY?!?!?! I hadn't heard.

Yes but in those scenes we're not there for dialogue, we're there for the movement sounds.
