This is my personal interpretation. First of all I've struggled with anxiety and depression for 20+ years but I get this song. If you look up the verses that go along with the song it makes more sense. People in the bible had depression. But I believe this is mainly about being comfortable where you're at. Not wanting to make changes. One of the verses is about the man that was ill and he sat by the pool for over 30 years waiting for someone to help him into the pool to be "healed". The Lord approached him and asked a simple yet thought provoking question. "Do you want to get well?" He didn't scream out "Yes, Lord! Heal me!" He made excuses. He complained that nobody was around to help him in the pool and someone always beat him to it. Like a pastor once said "It's okay not to be okay. But it's not okay to stay that way." God doesn't want us to live in misery. He has a better plan for us! That's what the song says to me. It's more of a get you convicted kinda song to not stay in your misery.
Yes Crystal, we are a new creation in Christ. This means we are being transformed from living our pre-born-again life "stuck in" the false identities and lies of the wisdom and spirit of the world (darkness/bondage), to living new life "from/out of" our true identity in the truth, love and spirit of Jesus Christ (light/freedom). We "get" to leave our past behind because it does not define us. Yes, things happened...people did things to us and we did things to other people, but these things do NOT define us. Our failures and mistakes do NOT define us! Our Christ-given identity is what defines us! Thank you Jesus! All unforgiveness, bitterness, unresolved conflict, guilt, shame and condemnation are surrendered at the foot of the cross. Our "mind's eye" is being renewed in His likeness. His glory shines brightest in our weaknesses!

I would also recommend you read the book, "Rethinking Depression: Not a Sickness, Not a Sin,", by Dr. Daniel Berger II. It confirmed what the Holy Spirit was telling me throughout my years of anxiety, depression, and alcohol abuse. I no longer choose to live in a victim mindset. I am now walking in my Christ-given identity and have killed all false identities and labels in my life. Best wishes to you!

This song, if a call out, is a call out to those who get comfortable with being depressed and/or playing the victim and don't want to get better, but just want people to feel sorry for them. It's about people who feel that just because they are hurt they have the right to inflict pain on others too. If you listen thoroughly to this song, the lyrics are very explicit about that and aren't calling out those that have depression, but those who use their depression as an excuse and aren't willing to get the help they need and to get better.
As someone who has depression and spiraled down since my breakup with my ex, I have started to become comfortable and okay with it and let God slip to the wayside, but that's not okay. Jesus is here so that I don't have to feel the pain and I need to work to remember that and reach out to God. It's not easy to do by any means, but Christ is the greatest cure for depression that I've ever seen.
Understanding the point of mental issues (I used to be one of them), Jesus is the only one who can bare with this. Not only simply empy prayers or faith. If could do it, anyone of you guys out there, can. God Bless you everyone.
In todays society it's kind of cool to be a victim of something. A lot of them don't want help, just attention.

There is a point, when you've had so much trauma in your life, that you feel you deserve misery and pain. Thats me. I totally get this.

So powerful! I've struggled a few times myself with depression, and my best friend has chronic depression as well, so this song really speaks to me.
It has taken me quite a bit of time to square this song with my personal experience, and it's really hard to do so. I've struggled with depression for most of my life. I hate it, every bit of it. Waking up on Christmas morning and wanting nothing more than to stay in bed because my presence in the world will ruin the world. Watching two of my best friends get married and wondering why they invited me to the ceremony. Countless things that should make me happy and I feel nothing. I hate the misery.
But in some ways, hating the misery is what this song is all about, even if the lyrics leave something to be desired on that front. There are people like me who have accepted that this is their cross and they continue to praise Jesus through it, using it as their ministry. I am able to connect with others with mental illness because I know that God has a plan and that He's using me for His greater good. If that means I have depression, cool, because God's using me, and that's pretty awesome. And there are others who are in love with the misery because that's what makes them feel seen. If they're not miserable, then people aren't paying attention - they're not checking up, they're not showing them love, they're not doing anything to make sure they're okay.
In short, I'm in love with the misery because I hate the misery, but I recognize that the misery is what will allow me to reach others. Others are in love with the misery because it makes them feel seen.
I think this is my favorite song from the album...
Maybe when people talk about this subject they are not addressing the people who are legitatmately depressed or have anxiety. Maybe its addressing the ones who use those words for attention. The ones who blame the world for the situation there in and feel that gives them an excuse to be terrible or never have personal responsibility. Maybe a person will struggle with depression their entire life, that person still has a choice to grow closer to Christ and lead others to Him despite any mental illness or mental state. We should never use our situation to guilt others into giving us attention or putting anyone else through hell.
This is a brutal rebuke to all the sefl-centered people.........Thanks for your courage, Disciple!
What a great song. The lyrics are so revealing of the spirit of self-pity and self-hatred. Years ago I had made myself a prisoner, but we really have no right to hate ourselves if God loves us enough to send His Son as the sacrifice for our sins. Self pity is a sin, but the good thing about that is that of we confess it and forsake it, Jesus will set us free from it, and we never have to be prisoners to it again! 1 John 1:9: 9 But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

We may have moments, but we don't have to live there. The spirit and the power of the ever living and ever loving God who created the universe lives inside of us.
Until we believe on and act on that knowledge, we will never rise above the issues in life. But once we do believe and act on this knowledge we open ourselves up to all the advantages that are ours as believes in the risen savior.

Amazing hope that God gave us when we are in absolute misery and he gave his son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins! Hallelujah and an amen for that and especially this band for sharing important lyrical messages about the gospel and the music it expresses!!

I understand what you’re trying to say, but I have a feeling this one is gonna bump some people... it might insult some people who actually have depression/anxiety etc... Laplace's Demon and I totally understand that, I agree with you 100%. I think that people who are emotionally unstable might not read the song correctly and may get offended. It’s kind of instinct to just brush it off cause we know that they’re wrong but Disciple is a Christian band and supposed to ultimately be a good influence on people’s minds, so I just wonder if they realized how this song might sound to those who are unstable... if that makes sense

@@HeroMonsterPS3 I have legitimate OCD (used to be a lot worse, I'm in a much better place now), but this song didn't offend me. I could be wrong, but I think this song has more to do with the current climate of our culture (for example, on social media platforms as this video alludes to), where various mental conditions/afflictions (legit or otherwise) are often used to draw undue attention to oneself, than anything else. People with these mental conditions, such as depression, can fall in love with the misery of said condition because it allows them to play the victim and receive the social benefits that come with that. I don't know if that makes sense or not.
Orange02Blue03 yep, that’s exactly what I think too! I just thought maybe some people would find it hard to listen to or maybe that it’s offensive to them. I am not one of those people though lol
I was on various depression medications for 12 years. I was very depressed, and in very dark seasons of my life even suicidal. I know what it's like to be depressed. I know what it feels like to feel hopeless. But I also know what it's like to stay in that role of the victim, because it's easier oh, and yes, the relationship benefits. And yes, if I was depressed, I got a pass. So essentially I was enabled to stay a victim instead of believing the truth of God's word, telling me who I am now.
I think this is an awesome song Oh, and these words need to be said. I needed these words to be said to me, before things turned around for me.
