Aaron you're awesome! I love watching your tutorials. Every time I run into a situation in photoshop where I don't know what to do, I simply look up one of your tutorials and I'm back on track in no time. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
To invert a vector mask: Highlight the path with the pen tool (ctrl click it). Go to the pen tool options on the top bar. Find the path operations drop down (it looks like two square on top of each other). select one of the other options from that list.
Hey.. are you still there? Why my selection result is diferent? Do you know why my path selection is hiding the objec selected, not the around of the object selected? Thanks...
Really great tute Aaron, my only complaint is 'very small': sometimes you aren't zoomed in very much, and it's hard to see what you're doing with your cursor. I'm sure it looks fine on your screen, but viewing on a tablet or even a TV, some of the little tweaks you make are almost invisible. Thanks for teaching me this much easier way to rotoscope!
Extremely useful tutorial but I still have a problem. I cannot modify a layer because the point is not inside the vector mask of a visible layer. How can I do this? After creating a route with the Pen tool I was able to modify it then I changed tools, went back to the pen tool when I realized I could no longer change the path of my route. What did I do wrong? please and thank you!
Aaron, thanks for the video making the distinction between vector and layer masks. However, I still ask myself about the application. When and why would I use a vector mask? Not just to cut something out?
When I create a path and then go to level>vector mask>current path what is inside the shape is hidden. Why is it not the opposite? I want what is outside the shape to be hidden as in the video. Thanks :)
Thank you for your great tutorials! You are really professional and I like the atmosphere, the positive attitude as well the comprehensiveness of what you are talking about. I also like your office :) Best regards!
Lovely! but I started by sellecting the object using the quick sellection tool, than added a Vector mask on which I have chosen to make a path out of the sellection, then I more easily and faster refined the path...
Love your tutorials! I have a lot of cat photos that I want to just cut out and make some cool photos of them, would love to see how you do the ones in your intro!
Hey.. are you still there? Aaron? Why my selection result is diferent? Do you know why my layer mask result from the path selection is hiding the object selected, not the around of the object selected? Thanks...
Hi! I love your tutorials Aaron. In this one i have a question. Since is a vector mask, that means that if for some reason i re-size it... it will continue to be sharp?
I want to learn how to do something but I don't know how to ask you how to do it because I don't know what it's called... It's definitely a matte finish which I know how to do.. but I also want to learn how to do things where like yellow in the shadows without just looking yellow.. and orange in the midtones but without changing the skin tones. I keep seeing these photos that I want to be like, yet have no idea how to start or ask..
great.. what is your qualification in studies?? Because i done my bscs and now i want this field as my profession and many people said me that this is not the work of bachular degree holder
Hi, had the same problem, just found that you need to change a drop down box on the pen tool. its on the top left when you activate the pen tool, change it from shape to path.
Interesting but I still prefer the standard method, just create a path with the pen tool and, if required, 'command click' on path ( in path pallet) to make a selection. Nothing could be simpler! Sometime only the photographer can create an accurate path because only he/she knows where the edges are. That is, on many 3 dimensional objects (especially if they have a shiny surface) it can be impossible to tell where the object ends and the 'background' begins as sometimes you can have a perfect mirror effect on the object you are cutting out. I like to see the actual background at all times while creating the path otherwise it would be very easy to 'remove' part of the object being cut out by mistake. A tip for paths in dark shadow areas ( usually underneath ) where you can't see the edge, look in the channels pallet to find one (R,G or B ) that shows the most contrast in the shadow detail and 'duplicate' it. Adjust levels ( or curves) so that you can see everything in the shadow, finish your path and then delete the duplicated channel.
Hey Aaron, thanks for the cool lessons! :) Btw Adobe changed liquify tool on effects, you can edit face so much easily, think about making an episode maybe? It could be so useful for people! Love to jobs you do! #Respect
However... what I do is use the Quick Selection Tool, then right click your selection and choose Make Work Path. You can adjust how many points will show up (more/less Tolerance), can still adjust all of them and save yourself a bunch of time. You can then use the path in the exact way Aaron describes in his video.
Great tutorial, thank you!But there is something that goes wrong with me: After making the selection, When I go to "Layer-Vector mask-current path", the object that I selected DISAPPEARS behind the small squares, and the background that I want to remove, remains here !!!!!!!!!Thank you for those who will help
I'm liking the summary at the end! You're the man Aaron! There's not much I know about Photoshop that hasn't come from you.
in this tutorial i learnt that, by clicking alt or option, i can turn every point into a curve.
Aaron you're awesome! I love watching your tutorials. Every time I run into a situation in photoshop where I don't know what to do, I simply look up one of your tutorials and I'm back on track in no time. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
no time to waste here, every second is pure information to good use. the best !
I love the professionalism of your tutorials, nothing redundant, (almost) everything's relevant and useful.4.5/5 thank you!
Yuzukhane
Agreed. I even watch tutorials on techniques that I'm already familiar with. More often than not, I learn very key things that I've overlooked. :-/
Totally true!!! Love your phlearn-stuff!!
So happy I've found your channel! Can't wait to get started and make my thumbnails amazingggggg
I love the way you summarize the main steps.
Your tutorials are very useful for beginners like me! thanks a lot! and regards from the very south: Argentina!
To invert a vector mask:
Highlight the path with the pen tool (ctrl click it).
Go to the pen tool options on the top bar.
Find the path operations drop down (it looks like two square on top of each other).
select one of the other options from that list.
For the shortcut lovers (like moi):
With the path selected, just control+click on the "Mask" button at the bottom of the "Layers" palette.
Make sure that your pen tool is in "path" not "shape" mode. That's an important piece of info. Without the "path" mode, this will not work.
Thank you so much for that heads up. I wasn't able to follow the tut until I changed this.
Thank you!! Just saved my life !!
Hey.. are you still there?
Why my selection result is diferent? Do you know why my path selection is hiding the objec selected, not the around of the object selected? Thanks...
Hey, it's now fixed! I don't know why haha
Thanks for the tip!
why is mine inverted? When I use the pen tool, the inside of the shape is erased/masked, not the outside. pleas help!
🥳thank you for this straightforward tutorial!!!
Great.
It's useful to mention the shortcuts as well: ctrl+shift+click-the-mask-icon-in-layers-panel and the same with ctrl+alt
Your tutorials are top notch! Concize and right to the point!
Awesome tutorials .. Thankzz Aaron and phlearn ..5 /5
Wow, I never knew there was a vector mask in Photoshop. Thank you for this tutorial.
You make it all look so easy...great job.
You're the best Aaron!!
I'm pretty sure I've got the vector mask set up right, and am using the pen tool in path mode, but I'm not getting a live preview of the mask.
Windy weather and new great tutor, thanks from Russia )

Your tutorials are on point.
love your tuts Aaron :)

Wow, this video is amazing, the quality of the footage is very clean and nice...
great! can we refine the edge of a vector mask with a brush? or the pen tool only?
Thank you very much sir.. Could you make an episode of adjusting the disco lights so that we make people or a person visible..!?
Can you ad path points later?
Aaron, thanks for the video making the distinction between vector and layer masks. However, I still ask myself about the application. When and why would I use a vector mask? Not just to cut something out?

Thanks Aaron. Great information.
I don't have path in my pallet. How do i get it on there?
Thanks for the great episode
When I hold ctrl using the pen tool and click on vector node, it moves the whole vector mask instead of just resizing the node.
Same here
Love your tutorials! I have a lot of cat photos that I want to just cut out and make some cool photos of them, would love to see how you do the ones in your intro!
I love the way you teach sir.
Hey.. are you still there? Aaron?

Eve Hallows he has a video called "how to colour tone with apply image in Photoshop" that sounds to me what you are explaining.
Aaron has a video covering this very thing. Like all his videos, it is awesome.
