Observation regarding the strikes... It seems like if it tells you to pay attention and the image is showing grey hands, you can just look back at the road, and it'll be fine. But if the image is showing the red/orange hands and it beeps at you it's way more sensitive, and would prefer it if you apply force to the wheel rather than just look back at the road. So if you want to avoid strikes in the future, that might be the key.
Yes. Theres two types of nags. The common nag you can flick the scroll with and get rid of. The stressed nag is when FSD isnt comfortable, usually caused by rows of traffic cones in my experience, it throws up the red hands, and you must torque the wheel. You can not flick the scroll wheels for this type of nag. It wants solid 2-3 seconds of pressure on the wheel or youll get a strike. This is whats happening to him. There is no difference in beep sounds or colors besides the tiny red hands to tell which type of nag you're getting. And since you're suppose to stare at the road like a robot, its impossible to glance down and check if its a normal nag or red hands nag. Bad design, surely it will be fixed.
@@Buggabonesvery annoying, it red nags all the time if there's a turn, sometimes even if your hands are on the wheel because you have to apply an unrealistic amount of force, and the line between that and disengagement is too shallow
I almost always have to disengage when I see the red hands it seems not to notice the typical slight turning Force and I don't want to risk getting a strike
I wonder if Tesla is thinking of this as very transitional towards a very soon to be much closer to FSD state so hasn’t overly focused on perfecting this UI?
It is strange that the new (no hands) system requires you to keep your eyes on the road yet you need to keep your eyes on the screen if you do not want to miss a note that you need to pay attention to the road. They need an audio sound saying to keep your eyes on the road before they give you a strike otherwise one must keep looking at the screen to make sure the car knows you are keeping your eyes on the road.

Very helpful Chris. I also wear sunglasses on all day time drives unless it's raining. AS I have a 2018 Model X (no interior camera) I won't be able to take advantage of hands free driving. The duration between nags seems much shorter than what you experience. Mineis 30 seconds or so and is really annoying. Perhaps it's longer with highway driving and in that scenario, I tend not to use FSD when there is a lot of traffic. I know that seems counter intuitive but the X notifies with a thin white light on the binacle display and it is easily ignored even when you are concentrating on the road. I lost FSD for 7 days just because of that notification feature which I believe is poorly implemented on this older model Tesla.

We just watched this video. We are on 12.3.6 with our model X and we are seeing that we have strikes that built up we’ve gotten four strikes and two of them have been because we have sped up through cruise control, but we are finding that they are not going away after seven days, so we currently have we’re currently sitting at four and we’re constantly getting beeped at for stuff that we’re not doing like last night I was driving had my hand on the yoke was watching the steering and it kept beeping at me…. Is this something you are seeing different where the strikes go away after seven days? With 12.4.1?

Since you seem to have the attention of Tesla engineers on twitter. Could you ask them to add an option for safety score warnings. I’ve been thinking it’d be kinda cool if there was an orange-red warning similar to the blue FSD warning anytime we’re braking too hard or turning too hard or following too close and all that jazz so we can more proactively drive safer when not using FSD. I think that’d be badass and would be well received. Otherwise fuckin love your videos keep it up!
Do you guys actually apply pressure on the steering wheel or just change volume level (left side scroll ball) or adjust speed (right side scroll ball)?
I typically drive with my hand on the lower left quarter of the wheel and grip the upper right part without turning the wheel. The wheel notices more pressure on the top than the lower part of the wheel.
I'm on 4 strikes on 12.3.6. Strikes don't go away after 7 days, I got the first one many weeks ago and I've never had them go away. I'm wondering if they get reset with 12.4 whenever I get it here in BC Canada
Actually, I think the new policy of removing one strike every 7 days gets implemented with software 2024.14.9 and 2024.20.1, the Spring Update, which are in very wide rollout as we speak. Something like 80% of Teslas already have it, including my son and me; so if you don't have it, you should be getting it soon.
I’m on FSD 12.3.6, but system updated to 2024.14.9 and was confused about the update. I got a strike yesterday. 😂. I thought I was on new FSD version 12.4.1.
Nice! I have 2024.3.25 and it's pretty damn good! Far fewer interventions than ever before. I can hardly wait to get this upgrade. Among other things, I like the way they grouped the 3 speed details together again, I hated when they separated them. And the turn signals look easier to see. Can't wait!
The camera is the primary tool to monitor the driver, however the wheel nag is not removed. It will monitor the driver when the internal camera is blocked, the driver is wearing sunglasses or a hat, the ambient lighting in the car is too low, or if an older vehicle does not have an internal camera. I find with 12.3.6 has minimal wheel nags during daylight driving and more during nighttime driving.
_It will monitor the driver when the internal camera is blocked_ As I pointed out in a different comment, if the internal camera is blocked, FSD won't engage at all.
With this version and with the camera active, If you keep your hands on the wheel, does it still allow you to spend time looking at and using the display. Without a warning.
thanks again not only the video was good but they definitely give you a good laugh from time to time have a great personality and it shows in your work. Thank you. I do have FSD 12.3.6 wonder when you would think I would get the next 12 . 4 update I know you don’t have the crystal ball but I’m wondering how soon they roll out the 12.4 to everybody else?
So far I haven't been a fan of supervised FSD (too many lane changes if I forget to flip the switch) I also have BETA is that better use? I had BETA on my last tesla but haven't used on the new car.
Beta doesn't exist anymore. So any car that has an updated version of the software it will say FSD (Supervised). If it says beta it doesn't have all the latest improvements so it's not better in any way.
@@joefalkner2368 right scroll wheel to the left or right (which changes how FSD behaves) and then click on Minimal Lane Change on the screen where the information card is (radio, tire pressure, trip counter). You'll have to activate it each drive though since they don't allow it to be set by default.
I find this "Eyes Forward - Hands-Free" feature way too sensitive from when there is a 1st warning (for example looking at the Tesla screen to change a setting, drinking a beverage, etc) and staring straight ahead for the camera to confirm your eye position, B-BAM.... strike-out. It would be better IMHO if after the first warning it had a count down timer or next final warning to let you know that it is going to a issue a strike-out. Then, what the heck, one has to STOP the car and re-start, which is silly, since most will do this awkward off/on ramp procedure or worse, stop on the side of the highway which is very dangerous. Best approach would be a time-out period which gets longer each time one gets a strike-out, for example from 1 min for the 1st, 1 hour for the 2nd, to 7 days for the seventh, for each cumulative strikeout, reseting each strikeout every 7 days from when it was issued.
I have a theory that if the roads are mostly clear of other cars and VRU's .. and lanes are well marked that it's more lenient on 'hands on' warnings... it'll request hands on again as it approaches something more risky.. (turns or traffic in my experience)
@@DirtyTesla While that may not be an option anymore, it is my understanding the following distance depends on the driver profile (Chill, Average, Assertive), with Chill having the greater following distance.
Unless I missed it, you never mentioned if this new feature can be selected off or on in the Settings. I like the "old" way and don't necessarily want to wear a hat or sunglasses to disable the "new" way.
_you never mentioned if this new feature can be selected off or on in the Settings._ Doesn't look like it. I guess you're going to have to get used to wearing a long-brimmed ball cap if you want to revert to steering wheel nags only.
@@BigBen621 I think I may wait to install that version until they come out with the "minor fix" version. Maybe they'll make it selectable in the settings by then. Yeah, I know,,,,,,, wishful thinking.
I can't wait to try 12.4 but from what I'm seeing here it doesn't really seem like much of an improvement minus the auto park being a little quicker. I wear my sunglasses 99% of the time when I'm driving so a little bit disappointing.
A quicker autopark would be a blessing. Frankly, I don’t use it if there’s too much traffic around. People glare at me like I’m an idiot. They are probably right, but for the wrong reason. 😜
I just got the Spring Update with the older FSD and it seems the nag is gone. I also never got the pay attention warning. Maybe a glitch in this build.
Thanks for the video, very informative! I have one weird suggestion if I may - please try not recording immediately after eating, those of us with various degrees of misophonia find it quite distrubing.
@DirtyTesla would love to see an FSD video at night. Harder to film, I get that. But would be interesting to see if the internal camera can actually see you. I had a lot of trouble with that during my free month.
I get under 200 Watts per hour a lot in spring and fall and even in winter if it's sunny or summer if it's cloudy. My average after the first 35,000 miles a 226/mile. That was from July 23-Nov 23 in West Michigan. Model 3 rwd
The green dot system is genius. The driver gets to choose how the system works. The driver is completely in control. I do wish they would put back the single pull/double pull to choose between Autopilot or cruise control, and FSD. Maybe the green dot system will solve that problem.
@@DirtyTesla That's the one thing I was worried about, glad it's not as extreme for you. Hands free sounds cool but the amount of lane changes that AI experienced would make my experience nearly unusable. I'm still on 12.3 so I guess we'll see!
"Is the benefit worth letting them see you" Them? No human is actively watching you. The FSD computer is the "them". You can opt out of data sharing if you don't want any video clips shared with Tesla (which they would use for training and improving the driver monitoring software). So no need for any privacy tradeoff to benefit.
The problem is these instant strikes where you get very little warning. The old version would give you much more warning before a strike. You might say you get five strikes, no big deal. If you have Tesla insurance, each one of those strikes significantly raises your insurance premium.
I’ve only seen one UA-camr mention it ever, and every time I mention it I get ridiculed “it might work differently cause your in dif area” but I live like 20 min away from you in Westland so it can’t be night and day difference. How have never in years of recording it never experience the blinking light issue ?
Ill never use this unless they change something. The blue flash stays on way too long even after you've looked ahead. There is zero difference in warning sounds. There's actually two types of nags, I'm sure you know this. The basic nag you get every 1-2 minutes, but the other nag is when its in a situations its not comfortable (traffic cones arounds you), it throws up red hands and you HAVE to torque the wheel, you cannot flick the scroll wheels for this type of nag. The problem is, you're getting the red hands nag and it still says pay attention to the road. That's wrong, it should say there touch the wheel, and you're getting strikes because of it.
_it throws up red hands_ The red hands is not a nag, it's a requirement to take back control immediately, which is consistent with SAE Level 2 requirements.
@@BigBen621 No, not the giant red steering wheel that takes up the entire screen.. Thats the take over immediately. Theres a nag with small red hands. In normal FSD, thats what beeps at you. Regular nags dont beep. The problem is, with eye tracking, BOTH nags now beep. Impossible to tell if it wants eye contact on road, or hands on wheel.
@@Buggabones OK, thanks. I guess I haven't watched the details closely enough to make the distinction. I'm certainly familiar with the giant red hands and steering wheel; but I probably don't look closely at the different icons that go with nags, and just take the action required by the text of the nag.
I understand the privacy concerns, but everyone has a phone with a camera pointed at them all the time anyway. You can cover the cam if you don’t want to be seen, like many people do with webcams.
@@williamrogers1219 Actually, if it can't see your eyes, it reverts back to steering wheel nags. But if the camera itself is obstructed, FSD won't engage at all. Ask me how I know...
I have 12.3.6 and I wear my polaroid clip on sunglasses all the daytime and the system has no problem. It acts normally. Are you saying it will have a problem on the next rev? .😢 Thanks.😮
Thanks, Chris. Perhaps the hands-free function of the system is more sensitive when you're making a video is not because of your talking, but maybe because you talk a lot using your hands? Not sure if hand placement has to do with anything; like if I am staring at the road, can I have my hands behind my head or in any other place away from the wheel and it not nag me?
You were looking at the road when it gave you your second strike. That is not fair, and not encouraging. You should be able to talk while looking at the road.
The not being able to wear sunglasses is the thing that makes it pretty useless to me. It's often the case that wearing sunglasses is more safe because you can see with less glare. It makes it harder to be attentive if you cant see
Dude, I've been watching your videos, how have you not picked up on the fact that when you get the RED symbols on the steering wheel prompt, you MUST then apply pressure to the wheel. That's why you keep getting strikes. Elon said this, it was on twitter by some other people, and it's easy to see in your videos. Just trying to help out.
_when you get the RED symbols on the steering wheel prompt, you MUST then apply pressure to the wheel._ No, you're mistaken; it's the text of the nag that determines what action must be taken. For example, at 8:26 he gets the nag "Apply slight turning force to steering wheel", so that's what he must do. Similarly, at 3:57, he gets the nag "Please Pay Attention to the Road", so he must return his gaze to the road ahead. But your comment did bring up an interesting issue I haven't been aware of, and haven't seen a comment on. For both of these nags, the hands were gray, or as close to that as my deficient color vision can detect. But at 4:35, he gets the "Please Pay Attention to the Road" nag, but the hands are red; and shortly thereafter, he gets a strike. This suggests to me that you at first you get gray (?) hands with either the attention or the steering wheel nag. But after you get repeated nags, you get red hands; and very shortly thereafter you'll get a strike if you haven't cleared the nag. So apparently getting either nag with red hands is in effect a final warning; keep it up, and you're getting a strike.
So if you wear transition prescription glasses that darken under sunlight you won't be able to use it because the lens darkening will void the system. Great 😏
@@DirtyTesla just curious if it actually impacts the nag. You mention 40 minute drive without touching the wheel, but you are showing it constantly nag you as you push the edges of what will cause a nag. How about just talk over it after one time? I follow your channel and not really any others that do FSD stuff so maybe theres lots of others who have videos not talking with this software, but I imagine others would be curious. It nagged you a bunch while talking last video too, you mention it doesnt do it off camera when you arent talking. Itd be nice to have an example of that to prove it. This just makes it look less capable then it is.. divided attention is a real issue so talking on phone, or to the camera is distracting you (or anyone who does it) from the road.. the nags seem warranted if someone is talking constantly they are demonstratably less attentive, its been shown distracted driving can be as bad or worse then impaired driving. This is a safety system, hopefully it continues improving driver safety
@@jackgreenstalk777 _just curious if it actually impacts the nag._ My guess is that it isn't the talking, but the long bill of his cap bobbing around when he talks, and sometimes interrupting the camera's view of his eyes. I think a better test would be a video where he doesn't wear a cap, and see if that changes anything.

That's what I always do! It feels so dangerous to actually apply force to the wheel.
I keep one hand on the wheel. With 12.4, I’ll do the same.
I typically drive with my hand on the lower left quarter of the wheel and grip the upper right part without turning the wheel. The wheel notices more pressure on the top than the lower part of the wheel.
New Tesla model s owner. I have a 2017 fsd how do I get hands free on my Tesla model s? Thanks for the video
The 2024.14.9 update did *not* update FSD to 12.4.1.
@@BigBen621 correct. I made the wrong assumption that it would.
_It will monitor the driver when the internal camera is blocked_
As I pointed out in a different comment, if the internal camera is blocked, FSD won't engage at all.
Can you stick transparent eye stickers on the sunglasses to trick it?
With this version and with the camera active, If you keep your hands on the wheel, does it still allow you to spend time looking at and using the display. Without a warning.
Does this apply to auto pilot ?
thanks again not only the video was good but they definitely give you a good laugh from time to time have a great personality and it shows in your work. Thank you.
I do have FSD 12.3.6 wonder when you would think I would get the next 12 . 4 update I know you don’t have the crystal ball but I’m wondering how soon they roll out the 12.4 to everybody else?
I’m looking forward to getting this version !
Help me…flip the switch? I get far too many willy-nilly, unnecessary lane changes.
@@joefalkner2368 right scroll wheel to the left or right (which changes how FSD behaves) and then click on Minimal Lane Change on the screen where the information card is (radio, tire pressure, trip counter). You'll have to activate it each drive though since they don't allow it to be set by default.
Either way this would be perfect for me most of my trips and driving are on very straight roads.
I, for one, plan to keep my hands on the wheel. Thanks for another great video.
Do you think this will come to AP?
Was that somebody driving on the left shoulder?
how do you record the screen on the tesla?
Like this ua-cam.com/video/x7UyT6KCYCo/v-deo.html
Does the hands free work at night?
I have a theory that if the roads are mostly clear of other cars and VRU's .. and lanes are well marked that it's more lenient on 'hands on' warnings... it'll request hands on again as it approaches something more risky.. (turns or traffic in my experience)
I wonder if you put sunglasses on and then googly eyes or stickers of eyeballs if that would fool the system 🤷🏼♂️
It would be an interesting test
Already filmed 😜
😂😂😂😂😂. Love it!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
How many cars away did you set for cruise control?
That's not an option anymore
Any word on when 4.2/3 is coming out ...for us common folk?
I can't wait to try 12.4 but from what I'm seeing here it doesn't really seem like much of an improvement minus the auto park being a little quicker. I wear my sunglasses 99% of the time when I'm driving so a little bit disappointing.
A quicker autopark would be a blessing. Frankly, I don’t use it if there’s too much traffic around. People glare at me like I’m an idiot. They are probably right, but for the wrong reason. 😜
Perspective: $50B is $1,000,000 per HOUR for 25-years. Not a bad payday.
Mind-boggling
Does that work on autopilot or just FSD?
How does attentive monitoring work at night?
Most cars have ir lights next to the camera... Older cars probably won't work
I find more wheel nags at night and few during the day even when holding on to the wheel with 12.3.6.
very cool videos really enjoy them but... wondering for those who use Tesla insurance if those FSD strikes will affect your insurance premiums???
Thanks! I'm not sure, we don't have Tesla insurance in Michigan.
I believe the Insurance Commissioner does not allow it in California.
I just got the Spring Update with the older FSD and it seems the nag is gone. I also never got the pay attention warning. Maybe a glitch in this build.
Nice
Thanks for the video, very informative! I have one weird suggestion if I may - please try not recording immediately after eating, those of us with various degrees of misophonia find it quite distrubing.
@DirtyTesla would love to see an FSD video at night. Harder to film, I get that. But would be interesting to see if the internal camera can actually see you. I had a lot of trouble with that during my free month.
AI Driver did a night drive with FSD 14. Here’s his video with day and night: ua-cam.com/video/ZyOV_ECO-QE/v-deo.htmlsi=ru4O-wlTTbP163Ic
How the hell are you getting 242Wh/mi?! I always get just over 300 and I did go 66 in a 60 for miles and miles.
I get under 200 Watts per hour a lot in spring and fall and even in winter if it's sunny or summer if it's cloudy. My average after the first 35,000 miles a 226/mile. That was from July 23-Nov 23 in West Michigan. Model 3 rwd
Tires? Temperature? Traffic conditions?
“A” “Shock” for Ashok was the funniest thing ever.
Thanks for taking the strikes for the team Chris ha ha ha. Thanks for clarifying.😊
The green dot system is genius. The driver gets to choose how the system works. The driver is completely in control. I do wish they would put back the single pull/double pull to choose between Autopilot or cruise control, and FSD. Maybe the green dot system will solve that problem.
I don't get why they think it's a good idea to remove the option to alternate between Cruise Control and Self Driving.
Yes, I want to be able to use either auto pilot or FSD depending on the circumstances
The green dot looks so tiny -- maybe it could be a bigger circle or other shape.
Make a new profile without FSD and use that profile every time you want to drive using cruise controI. know it's a heck but it's the best we can do.
AI Drver is very critical of the repeated lane changing problem. Did you see his tube and did you experience same behaviours?
I did watch his video, I saw it on one drive the other day (video eventually) but not as extreme as him.
@@DirtyTesla That's the one thing I was worried about, glad it's not as extreme for you. Hands free sounds cool but the amount of lane changes that AI experienced would make my experience nearly unusable. I'm still on 12.3 so I guess we'll see!
I think if i sees construction zones, it doubles the warnings to pay attention
How about night driving?
"Is the benefit worth letting them see you"
Them? No human is actively watching you. The FSD computer is the "them".
You can opt out of data sharing if you don't want any video clips shared with Tesla (which they would use for training and improving the driver monitoring software). So no need for any privacy tradeoff to benefit.
If it yells at you, you can just adjust the scroll wheel and it will be quiet. You don’t have to touch the wheel.
That's only for the steering wheel nag. It doesn't affect the "pay attention to the road" nags.
With a legacy model X with no cabin camera, I won't have a choice. Between the looking away nags and no sunglasses, I don't think I will miss much.
The problem is these instant strikes where you get very little warning. The old version would give you much more warning before a strike. You might say you get five strikes, no big deal. If you have Tesla insurance, each one of those strikes significantly raises your insurance premium.
"I don't know where we're going […] I don't care, the car's going to figure it out"
I’ve only seen one UA-camr mention it ever, and every time I mention it I get ridiculed “it might work differently cause your in dif area” but I live like 20 min away from you in Westland so it can’t be night and day difference. How have never in years of recording it never experience the blinking light issue ?
My eyes are way too sensitive to light 😭 not wearing sunglasses is ridiculous 😞 how long is this going to be a thing?
I think you're not supposed to wear hats. I heard on another channel that hats and sunglasses mess with eye detection.
If tesla doesnt hire you I will lol. love the videos man. I know you have 3 teslas, let me borrow one
lol I have 2
@@DirtyTesla wouldn't hurt you to gift a marine corps vet his dream car right?
What would hands free system do if you have prescription glasses
Works fine, as long as they're not prescription sunglasses.
_it throws up red hands_
The red hands is not a nag, it's a requirement to take back control immediately, which is consistent with SAE Level 2 requirements.
I agree
_You can cover the cam if you don’t want to be seen_
But that will disable FSD completely.
@@BigBen621 If the camera is obstructed, FSD reverts back to steering wheel nags.
@@williamrogers1219 Actually, if it can't see your eyes, it reverts back to steering wheel nags. But if the camera itself is obstructed, FSD won't engage at all. Ask me how I know...
Ashok pronounces his own name as "uh-shoke" (rhymes with choke)
hands free looks EXTREMELY DANGEREROUS. bro had .2 seconds to grab the wheel or crash!
I have 12.3.6 and I wear my polaroid clip on sunglasses all the daytime and the system has no problem. It acts normally. Are you saying it will have a problem on the next rev? .😢 Thanks.😮
_Are you saying it will have a problem on the next rev?_
In a word, yes.
Thanks, Chris. Perhaps the hands-free function of the system is more sensitive when you're making a video is not because of your talking, but maybe because you talk a lot using your hands? Not sure if hand placement has to do with anything; like if I am staring at the road, can I have my hands behind my head or in any other place away from the wheel and it not nag me?
will it let you roll a fat one while its driving?
You were looking at the road when it gave you your second strike. That is not fair, and not encouraging. You should be able to talk while looking at the road.
I was looking at my watch lol
@@DirtyTesla Well, at least they now have a more reasonable protocol for rehabilitation from FSD jail. ;-D
My 2017 S has no cabin camera and I refuse to have a vehicle that does .
Good for you.
The not being able to wear sunglasses is the thing that makes it pretty useless to me. It's often the case that wearing sunglasses is more safe because you can see with less glare. It makes it harder to be attentive if you cant see
Never been this early 🙂
Just call it "vision-based monitoring" 🙂
I drive with sunglasses just about year around. I guess I will never get handsfree...
At night?
FEEDBACK (volume is a bit low. lower than regular and other youtubers)
What if you had glasses that had fake eye balls on them. would it think you had your eyes open?
Coming soon 👀
Famous last words.
No, not 2 strikes for us buddy.
_when you get the RED symbols on the steering wheel prompt, you MUST then apply pressure to the wheel._
No, you're mistaken; it's the text of the nag that determines what action must be taken.
Great 😏
Do you think because you talk with your hands so much it is making harder on you? Or is it 100% just the direction you are looking?
Could be
“No hands” is what I always tell her
Can you do a video where you dont talk during the drive
😳
@@jackgreenstalk777 _just curious if it actually impacts the nag._
My guess is that it isn't the talking, but the long bill of his cap bobbing around when he talks, and sometimes interrupting the camera's view of his eyes. I think a better test would be a video where he doesn't wear a cap, and see if that changes anything.
Tesla moved the "nag" from the steering wheel to the eyes! Elon said it was going away.
_Elon said it was going away._
No, he explicitly said the steering wheel nag was going away.
