    1. changes the white balance to daylight
    2. blocks off all daylight and replaces it with artificial light

    • @TheJudge064
      @TheJudge064 5 років тому +53

      Artificial lights have to be properly white balanced too, since they too have colour temperature.

    • @TheIkaika777
      @TheIkaika777 5 років тому +24

      The artificial light was set to daylight, having the natural light changing constantly means one would have to keep changing the white balance and iso.

      Because it's easier to subtract than to add.

      You're free to use any light you choose in whatever way you want. His scene in his head probably intended the character to be seated in a warmly lit indoors environment, perhaps in the night time. If he had wanted to clearly state - through his style choice - that the scene takes place during the day, he would have shown that instead.

    • @oddities-whatnot
      @oddities-whatnot 5 років тому +7

      The artificial lights are already daylight balanced, so his selection on the camera was correct.

      SvendDesigns see that's where your wrong. I've done UA-cam for 3 years now and it's always been for the fun. Hence why I don't even have my videos monetized. It is not a gofundme it is an indigogo meant for raising money to people with a passion.since I don't have monetization I need help raising the money. Everything I need costs 1600 and I'm working to make money and I'm not begging I simply included it in my description. Didn't even mention it in my video

  • @JodyBruchon
    @JodyBruchon 6 років тому +1

    This video is excellent. I'm pleased to see that you didn't advocate using CineStyle (it's not even supposed to be used by normal humans!) but I should mention that shooting flat in ANY way on a camera with 8-bit color channel output files (pretty much every DSLR or camcorder that exists under $2000) will damage your color quality while only giving you between 1/2 and 1 stop of extra dynamic range. It's not usually worth it. The absolute best advice is to start with a standard or neutral color profile at default settings, take test footage similar to what will be shot, grade and edit that footage to see how it looks, and only try different settings if the results are not right in some way AFTER doing what you can with lighting, composition, etc. to block or avoid the problematic bits.
    Shooting flat discards some information to allocate that space to other information and since you're basically guaranteed to be shooting with the goal of grading the flat image back to the way the standard image looked "but with better dynamic range" you're throwing out data then throwing out the expansion of the other data, so you've technically increased your total dynamic range while killing your dynamic *resolution.* A simplified way to explain what that means is this: instead of the final product's colors counting the range 16-235 as 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 it might be more like 16, 18, 20 with what used to be 17 or 19 rounded off. Push the exposure of any or all color channels up by a stop and the gap goes from 1 to 2 values in size for that channel; this is how you get a broken-up histogram/RGB parade and blotchy patches of featureless and noticeably incorrect color where a smooth gradient is supposed to be.
    What's really telling is that after you graded the flat footage, it looked just like the standard footage would have with the exposure dropped, but your face has a lot of color banding and generally looks worse. Go back and compare the standard footage to the graded flat footage; click between them as needed and the banding issues start to become obvious.

    I found myself humming the music in the background after I watched the video. Any chance you are thinking of releasing some of the tracks you write for DSLR Guide?
    Also, you mentioned in the video that very flat colour profiles aren't very good for DSLRs like yours. I've got a Nikon D5100, which was the direct competitor to the 600D at the time of it's release. I've been using the flattest profile I could find for my camera, and I've been frustrated by how my camera can't seem to produce video with a lot of sharpness or colour accuracy, even after grading and sharpening. This may be due to my image profile, but I'm not sure. What can I look for in a profile that can maximize the quality of the images that come out of my camera?
    Love your videos, by the way. They've been invaluable to me for learning about filmmaking!

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  8 років тому +1

      +sensi277 haha maybe one day! to be honest with you the difference between colour profiles are quite small, if you're looking for sharpness & colour accuracy it's probably your lighting that needs some work. That's really the best way to maximise the image quality :)

      +Daten Raten I do use magic lantern, but since this video is about the basics I decided not to get into that this time. magic lantern adds lots of nice features, but doesn't affect the image quality directly so it doesn't add to the 'film look'. makes the camera way easier to use though :)

    Anyone know where I can download the vision color profile? The vision color website is displaying a "we're working on something big" image on every page, including the download page :(

      Hey DSLRguide! Thanks for responding. After doing some extra digging I found that you can purchase it here :
      visioncolor.cartloom.com/shop/item/101709
      My question to you is, do you think it's work the 10$ to upgrade from cinestyle to vision color? Thanks!

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  8 років тому +2

      Jigesh Sarjaka it all depends on your budget, but if you can afford a DSLR then I'd recommend spending the extra $10 for vision color. I prefer the results compared to cinestyle about 70% of the time. If i'm lighting the scene, I always shoot vision color, but if it's a high contrast environment (eg sunny day outside) then cinestyle is usually better.

    From a music composers perspective, I dig the thinking that goes into lighting and contrast and color. It's actually very similar to how I visualize music before I write it. Except in sound, it's more about moods and tones. Your channel is awesome, I'm learning a shit ton of stuff.

    and also what does "Flat profile" exactly mean? and what is the difference between the two?

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  8 років тому +13

      +Peachy ❆ a flat profile just means that it makes the image less contrasty when you are filming. This means that you can hold more detail in the shadows and highlights, when you add the contrast back in :)

    That color grading wasn't too impressive.

      Yeah I felt like the image was way darker than it needed to be. It didn't do anything to improve the previous state of the picture.

      @@EggiTheShadow colour grading is good when done correctly. here he probably made it too yellow and bumped up the contrast too high

    Dynamic camera movement is another very strong factor in making your film more cinematic. Move the camera, don't always keep it still, and find a way to use it so that the viewer has a sense of space or depth with the setting. By the way nice work!

    Good introductory for beginners. But I really love how you mention that film isn't all about the shots because that's a common mistake now in this easily accessible technology these days

    I bought the same camera you have, Canon T3i, like 2 months ago and I've been trying to save some money to be able to upgrade it. Just found your channel today and I'm really excited to put it all in practice and save me a lot of money! I'm watching all of your videos! You are amazing!

    A quick question. How is there no noise in your video? I have tried to put my ISO to 200 - 400 on my Canon 1100D but it still gets alot of noise. I did do the videos at evening and it was dark outside, so is it because of that?

    Also removing the digital sharpening setting on the camera does a lot, helps to remove the "go pro / phone " look that it gives sometimes.
    Great video and good job getting those images from the good old t3i.

    At 100iso you lose stops on the black information. It's outside of the native iso of the camera.
    And as a side note dynamic range is different for each camera. It just depends on the stops the camera can do. Like the mini has much more than a DSLR. So it can get information from a low lighted subject and a high light subject in the same frame.

    3:33 improve dynamic range shooting with flatter values
    And then color grade later to push contrasts and whatnot
    But can only do this if your original video isn’t blown out in the first place
