The Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway is a volunteer operated heritage railway in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire offering a round trip of 28 miles. It uses part of the route of the former Great Western Railway's main line from Birmingham to Cheltenham which used to run via Stratford-upon-Avon.
It now operates steam and heritage diesel trains between Cheltenham Racecourse and Broadway through spectacular scenery in the Cotswolds. The line commands wonderful views across to the Malvern Hills and beyond.
Dougal and I start our day at Cheltenham Racecourse CAMC Site, and drive through Winchcombe to Toddington and the GWSR. From Toddington we ride behind Merchant Navy Class 'P&O Steam Navigation Company' back to Cheltenham Racecourse, then from Cheltenham Racecourse to Broadway passing Broadway CAMC site on the way.
In Broadway we take a look around the village and have a delicious plant-based lunch at the 'Number 32' Cafe.
Back on the train we head back to Toddington where my friend Tony, with whom I worked on Eurostar, gives us a VIP tour of the signalbox and the loco sheds.
If anyone is wondering how the token system works in signalling, an explanation is provided here:

Thanks for watching!
Andrew I am literally tripping over my words in enthusiasm and to see you back in action “ The Maestro” We have followed everything you do on utube and then to see this on GWSR is the icing on the cake , your enthusiasm for the garden at Toddington , lovingly cared for over the years by my grandson Harry ( who has learning difficulties ) as a volunteer. He is absolutely speechless ( like Dougal but he does smile ) he is enthralled to be recognised for his work. I would love to meet you when our Scottish tour ( on hold) reaches fruition , Uist and Benbechula top of the agenda after following your tour several years ago. Take care and thank you
PS. You even encouraged me to build my own suitcase train for Harry
Oh that is so lovely! I'm so glad I vocalised how lovely I found the garden at Toddington - in fact all the stations were beautifully presented, and the hard work really shows! Thank Harry from me for his hard work, it's noticed and appreciated.
I am a member of the GWSR and enjoy every moment when I visit We have a well known president Pete Wsterman
I am so jealous, I must have been one of their steam trains and the diesel loco around a dozen times, I just love it and they’ve slowly extended the line too. 👍
Were home now and it's so good we can see your video again we can say we've been there. It was only by seeing your video we wanted to go .So we love your travels we stay in house's we've stayed at the Broad Way campsite. We had Motorhomes. We moved onto staying in house's .We still love your channel. We just love Douglas.Thank you . We look forward to your next trip.☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️☮️
He never smiles - apart from when he greeted Tony!
That was lovely! My Dad helped as a volunteer on this ,at the start at Toddington Station ,when there wasn't even a track (in the early 1980's) We had the pleasure of taking him on a lovely sunny day on the completed line to Broadway for his 90 th birthday in 2019. He sadly passed away later that year so we were so glad he got to see it finished & enjoyed the ride. Thanks for the memories.
Aww, glad this brought back happy memories for you Caroline. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the wave 👋& smile . I was at the NEC yesterday with my husband & son & saw you at the stand as I came down the stairs ! Great show -so much to see!
🐶a dogs gotta do what a dogs gotta do Mr D! 👍😁
Signal Box, Priceless!!!!!!!
As scenic and picturesque as it is.. I'm my mind all I can hear is Doc Brown shouting "Marty,88mph!" Who needs roads!.. great vid keep um coming.. turning back to a Sunday evening treat. Looking forward to the next instalment.
Cheers Scott!
The merchant navy at the start is beautiful
True that!
I loved that Andrew 😍 I always love the old cases and trunks at steam railways. Thanks
I wish my eyesight was that good 😆 but I'm presuming you meant a house you are renting, I think it's great to see Douglal regularly again, and you of course 😉😀
My mum lives in Winchcombe and also volunteers on the railway, so I was amazed and delighted to see this! Great video - thank you!
Our pleasure!
Lovely video Andrew. Nothing better than wandering through engine sheds and the smell of the oil and real engineering. Used to love taking the boys to the Dean Forest Railway when they were young and taking in all that was happening. Haven’t been for years but highly recommended if you’re still in the area.
Enjoyed the rail tour very much. Thanks!
What a lovely day out!
Hi Andrew ,Great Video, the dedication of all involved to give you that Steam Train experience is wonderful, the Coach you travelled on was immaculate. I loved the Signal Box too! You certainly enjoyed your Lunch in Broadway & lovely to see Dougal enjoying a doggy treat. Many thanks for sharing lots of love to you & Dougal XX ❤️❤️
Glad you enjoyed it Susan!
Delightful, just delightful. Thanks Andrew.
Glad you enjoyed it :) Thank you!
I love trains. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome Rita, thanks for your support yet again :)
Wonderful video about a subject I love. Riding the steamers and then seeing the switches in the signal box was great. The loco shed was unexpected, too. Earlier I saw a peek at the Peak, 45149, not knowing we would see so many more locos at the end. Might have to watch it again.
Great video. After watching it had to do the trip. Broadway to Cheltenham. Had a great day out. Really friendly line. Great day out.
Glad you enjoyed it - and good to hear you had a good day, Diane!
I really enjoyed that, the engine is gorgeous. When I hear the word Toddington I automatically think of the services on the M1. I never knew there was a steam train railway there as well. Thanks for a smashing video. ilona
Andrew , what a great video and a truly wonderful day out , super music , brought back happy memories of Broadway , lovely burger , looked delish ! Loved seeing all the railway station gardens , stunning , the signal box was amazing in operation , gosh that would keep you fit , the volunteers doing sterling work in restoring these mighty trains , really enjoyed that!!
Another wonderful video!
Thank you! Cheers!
What a lovely collection of engines. And the Train Set was lovely too.
Glad Dougal could share in the journey. He's such a great dog. Even if he doesn't smile.
Thanks, enjoyed the VIP trip. Beautifully maintained locos. We couldn't get on at or off Broadway when we went in May, I see you can have the open compartments now. Can't beat having a Heritage railway just outside the campsite!
Cheers Bob! Yes, things are relaxing somewhat now on all the heritage railways. You don't even need a reservation on the ELR (Burrs CP) any more.
@@andrewjditton we're booked to go on the Bure Valley Narrow Gauge in a few weeks.
Delightful, thanks for sharing and as usual your music selection is spot on!!
Thanks Steve!
Great video really enjoyed that thanks 👍👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it Pete!
I love the GWR!! My parents live near Pershore and we’ve often travelled from Cheltenham, first to Toddington, and then on to Broadway once the line opened. Will pass on the recommendation of Number 32 - that burger looked awesome!!
A lovely trip, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
This video brought back such wonderful memories from my childhood in the 1950's when every station took pride in its appearance. Clicky clack of the train, the steam engine itself, the station refreshments, ticket office, station master, porters, conductor etc etc Wow! I cannot express my joy in watching this video....thank you Andrew!
Thanks Trevor, glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting video Andrew & Dougal, amazing steam trains and well worth a visit I think, you were close to my neck of the woods beautiful farming and cider county Herefordshire 😊 x
Loved this. Used to be a trainspotter in Derby & late father & brother both worked in the offices at British Rail. Been many times on the Santa Special on the Nene Valley Railway with the grandkids. ❤
Great video as always Andrew, thanks. Always lovely to see the BR Mk1 carriages in use. I spent my late teens and early 20s commuting in these as part of the Southern Region EMUs from Medway to London. Such comfortable seats in which one could nod off on the way home. They were never quite the same when they modernised them (Jaffa Cake livery).
I used to go to school then work on the very same - the nice CEPs and the horrible VEPs! And yes, the refurbished sets when they took away the little cushioned padding by the window... I know EXACTLY what you mean!
Very good. I like this new approach, with trailers and railway. 👏👏👏
Thank you very much!
What a fun day for you both. Those stations were so well maintained:))
Indeed they are!
I love steam loconotives
Nice video Andrew look's nice out there were you have been .
Very enjoyable andrew 😊👍
Glad you enjoyed it Mark!
I do love that railway
Love that railway. The people are really friendly.
Many years ago my grandfather, as a railway worker, had special access to the signal box at Sandy on the east coast mainline just before it was decommissioned. I was allowed to pull one of the levers and change a set of points. It was such a thrill so your visit to the signal box at Toddington brought back a special memory. It would never be allowed now of course. Thank you.
Sounds great, Karen. Glad it brought back some good memories :)
Hello and excellent video I have loved trains since late 80s and here on UA-cam since 2013 but have never visited that railway yet
One for the list!
Again a very nice video!!!🌸
Ist made me think of Agatha Christies Miss Marple🤣
Greetings to you and cuddles for Dougal from Germany!!!
Many thanks Heike!
We’re staying at Broadway in a few weeks. Hoping to get a pitch by the railway. Really looking forward to going on it again. Up to Yorkshire first and my first trip to the National Railway museum and more trains when we go to North York Moors railway. Great to see you and Dougal on your travels again.
Sounds great Mark - enjoy!
Excellent video, thank you! The GWSR is actually my nearest railway but I haven't been on it yet - will have to get on the case!
Yes! It's a great day out :)
🤩👍😁👋🇳🇱thank you!
Our pleasure!
Famntabulosa!
Andrew your timing is impeccable, just arrived at Broadway. Had a 47 running today 😁
Nice one! Enjoy, Colin!
O that was fab! I shall pass this to my hubby - he' s a nut on trains.
That's 2 GWR ( shame its not THE GWR) you tube videos I've seen in as many days!. Yours is by far the best - thank you x
Oh, yes far better than mine - I can't compete with a true professional! 😁 👍
Aww thank you!
Ha ha! Did you do one too Bob? I'll check it out!
What a great video👍
I’m off down there from the far north in July, and cannot wait. Think I’ll give that burger a try😉
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm wanting a return visit now :)
@@andrewjditton The diesel gala is in July...😉
It's fantastic all these heritage railways for people to enjoy! Really loved this video! My you're covering some ground on this trip! Lovely Dougal with his paw up, that's what Holly does when she wants cuddles and treats!! So pleased you're doing these vlogs every week, they brighten up the dullest of Sundays! Take care, much love! xx
Thanks Anne, glad you're enjoying them!
Looks a great place Andrew, step back in time once again, lovely music too 😀
Glad you enjoyed it Claire!
You lucky thing, what a great day! 35006 looks absolutely stunning, and recently overhauled?
Your on my favourite railway and on my favourite loco 35006. Its a pity they don't do one in N gauge lol.
Hi Andrew,
Nice to see you again on another one of your outings with Dougal. I tried subscribing for your newsletter but when I clicked on the subscribe, it appeared to be not working. Anyway, look forward to following more of your journeys and jottings.
Oh, that's odd. I've had other sign ups recently so I don't know why that might be?
Exquisite video! And the switching stuff was super, thank you for that inside info. That was great. But ... so you think that Wales and Ireland and Scotland don't have lush plantings? Andrew!
I was comparing what I say in front of me to home - The Outer Hebrides.
13:09 Love how Dougall followed his cue to drink at that precise moment. Cheers.
Gotta love a heritage railway. Found myself in Bridgnorth, the other day and couldn't help but seek out the Severn Railway. Great vid. I kept saying "wow" overtime you did. Andrew, a question. Can you ask your friend why the signalman uses a rag on the signal levers, please? Housekeeping, surely? Are their hands normally covered in oil and grease? I've always wanted to know.
No idea James! I'm wondering if it's to protect the hands in the days before work gloves - I imagine a busy signaller would get some nasty callouses if not. I'll ask Tony next time I'm down!
Sorry but Winchcombe is a small cotswold town well known for the castle
👍👌👏😊
Guard Ditton and Driver Boston ride again!
Indeed! Lovely to hear from you Controller Taylor - hope you're well. It's been a while!
@@andrewjditton All good thanks! Ditched the rat race and now living in a village in Snowdonia.
Hey Andrew, could you set up a way to donate that doesn't rely on PayPal? They keep refusing my money...
Thanks for trying Tom! Strange that. But it's the most accessible international way that's safe I'm afraid.
Lovely video thanks for not doing all the stupid takeover so many like to do
Cheers Keith. I try and let the images do the talking :)
