  • Another way to get tapeworms not mentioned in reel - pets eating rodents, such as cats going after mice. However, if they have a healthy immune system, they are less likely to get tapeworms.

How come we see tape worms in cats here in the north and yet I have never seen a flea. Been around dogs and cats my whole life and have never seen or even heard of fleas being around these cold parts of the country

How cold does it get where you are from? Unfortunately, as long as there is grass and wood like areas, there will always be fleas no matter the climate. For adult fleas to die they have to be at constant temp below freezing for at least five days straight, but even then they leave behind their eggs to dormantly survive for quite a while and hatch later on. They thrive in shade and hidden areas, so they can even be found in concrete cracks or gravel type environments, possibly even under your house.
If you don’t normally see them on your pet, then they most likely contracted them from a furiend or by eating infected grass/poop outside. You and your pet can also bring fleas into your home with your shoes and paws, then your pet can ingest them by licking their paws. Your pet can also get other types of worms just by harmlessly sniffing infected areas outside 😩 Downfall of having cats is that they groom each other, the cycle is never ending, especially for outdoor kitties. Diatomaceous Earth is great for naturally getting rid of intestinal parasites in your pets btw, super cheap too 😉

Something I dont understand is how my dog got tapeworms. He’s never had a flea infestation. He’s a white dog and i check his fur and bathe him regularly. I’ve never even seen flea poop on him. But yesterday I noticed tape worm segments in his poop. Back at my old apartment there were isolated incidents of a flea being on him after going outside but that was 5-6 months ago 😭I feel like such a bad owner. We have a vet appointment tomorrow.

Unfortunately it only takes just one flea to create an army lol no worries girl it happens. Here are some possibilities that could’ve happened... your dog had a play date with an infected furiend, your dog licking their paws after going outside, you unknowingly bringing them in on your shoes after walking in infected areas, eating infected grass or poop outside, playing in grassy/sandy/gravelly/wooded/shady areas (basically anywhere lol), playing fetch and having the toy land in an infected area then ingested by your pet when they put the toy in their mouth, etc.
Diatomaceous earth is a great natural treatment/preventative for your pup btw, super inexpensive and easy to find in store or online 🙂 You can also find dewormer at pet stores, places like Tractor Supply, or at Walmart for a cheaper price, if that’s something you’d like to do instead
