Just How Powerful is Russia Zircon Hypersonic Missile

  • Zircon anti-ship hypersonic cruise missile is designed to attack ships at sea and targets on land at speeds of up to Mach 9, giving enemy missile defenses little time to prepare. Zircon missile is designed to use speed to penetrate enemy air defense systems. Depending on the missile’s flight profile a U.S. Navy carrier battle group defended by the Aegis Combat System would have between two minutes and 20 seconds to detect, track, and shoot down the missile.

But first lets do some math. Zircons top speed is mach 9 right? Converting to km/s that is about 3km/s. Say you wanted to move a single degree for 5 seconds at 3km/s you would be off course 15km... Almost as much as the Chinese test missed by.
      "Russian patent number 2579409 relates to the field of rocket technology, and more specifically to hypersonic cruise missiles equipped with a hypersonic ramjet engine. The invention describes a method of application and device hypersonic cruise missile, allowing to solve the problem of performing a combat mission to destroy ground and surface targets of such a missile. The described invention is designed to maximize the combat potential of the combat module with the scramjet.
      The design mode for the scramjet are high-altitude cruise conditions while maintaining the estimated cruise speed, and the need to reduce the altitude and flight speed creates difficult technical problems due to the fact that:
      an engine designed to perform a hypersonic mid-flight at high altitude is not able to continue to work at low-altitude trajectory sections associated with a decrease in the flight number M, hence, the rocket must approach the ground or surface target with an inactive engine;
      characteristics of sustainability and controllability of the combat module with inactive scramjet significantly deteriorate, loss of stability becomes possible;
      there is also a danger of destruction of the scramjet design due to the increase in pressure in the flow part of the engine while reducing the Combat module from the march height before hitting the target."

      No, you just need an intercept course with a lead and a normal missile would do just fine. As far as I know, the only anti-air system with hypersonic interceptors is the Arrow III/IV, but those levels of speed are typically not needed for the same reason that a football receiver doesn't need to be moving faster than the thrown ball to catch it. If you know where the missile is, where it's aimed, and how fast its going, it's easy to calculate a location where you can send a slower projectile to create an interception course.

    In summary, in terms of the shipping/conveying vessels, the USA remains ahead. However, in terms of the delivery systems and projectiles, Russia's way ahead. Which all means that the Russian vessels are likely to get sunk but these would likely have released their hypersonic loads by then. Which again means that Russia will lose comparatively (much?) smaller in effect than on the receiving end. Sunak especially, to take note of this.

    I thought the kinetic energy in of itself was plenty enough to make it several times more destructive than traditional cruise munitions therefore offsetting production cost. But this guy just said this thing carries a weapons payload. I'm confused, does the kinetic energy alone inflict sufficient damage to cause a vessel? Or is the payload needed? Bc if it needs explosives thej isn't this just a r ally fast version of what we have currently? The only real advantage I can see from achieving these hypersonic speeds is that the projectile is virtually immune to any sort of countermeasures currently on the market. I just realized something else. For this new projectile to be deadly to a ship, especially something as large as a carrier. It would need more than hypersonic speed. It would need to be super dense and heavy as hell in order to transfer an immense amount of kinetic energy to destroy it's intended targets, primarily huge warships.

    Yeah, zircons are a game changer for sure. What wasn't mentioned is that a plasma surrounds the missile and absorbs all radar radiation, making it practically undetectable. It's shocking to see how much more advanced Russia's missile technology is than the US missile technology. The US should have been devoting research dollars to this earlier, instead of just letting Russia get so far ahead. If Russia fielded this technology in a war with the US, they could completely take out all US naval ships, leaving us without a navy. It's frightening to think about it.

It gives only one ping, if you are the target, there is no second ping it is that FAST. The only way of defense is to launch defense missiles and to hope that somehow it comes in the way of the incoming projectile. Just like somebody is shooting a gun on you, and you throw a rock and hope that bullet will hit the rock. It will not.

    I think it must be a gigantic problem to get a lock on those systems.
    Simply because at those high speeds you probably get a plasma field around the missile.
    For those who do not know: Plasma does not reflect but absorbs radar signals, making it hard if not impossible to detect using radar.
    On the infrared spectrum on the other hand it will probably be very visible.
    But it is a lot harder to do a long range track on infrared.
    Also it think it would be very hard for a missile to fly very fast at the low altitudes a tomahawk can fly. (due to winds, high waves,....)
    This is because it would give the missile not enough time to correct it's course to avoid it from crashing into the sea/ground.
    ps: I am not claiming to be an expert in this field. Just using the things I remember from the time I studied physics in college.
